I used to dislike Nirvana for the longest time for sounding the death knell for the 80s hard rock, metal, and yes even pop metal trends. It seemed like there was nary a bitchin' ass solo to be heard in most music from the 90s.

But lately I've been coming around to appreciating Nirvana a bit. They have some catchy riffs and stuff. Even if it is relatively simple music, it has enough non-diatonic harmony and shit or whatever to keep things interesting.
