So I got to leave when I was 14, but I still keep in contact with friends who don't have the same luxury, even though they have well respected blue collar jobs.
I went back a couple years ago and at the airport I had met a young couple and spoke to them for a bit. They sold everything they had in SA and managed to get a visa here, but couldn't find a job. The government did a godawful job of helping them too. I had to write a short piece about investing in South Africa for a mining industry economics course I took in University, so here's what I remember:

After apartheid the government mandated that companies (except foreign companies obviously) with more than some set level of annual revenue (to exclude small businesses) must be X% owned by blacks. So the few blacks with money bought up a huge number of shares in major companies at a discount. To have more black ownership the government gave loans to poor blacks so they could buy in too.

This created a bubble in the market and when it popped most of them lost their shirts. The rich blacks bought up the shares the poor blacks sold trying to pay off their debts. They went from being poor to being poor AND in debt. The businesses overall went from being owned by a few rich whites to being owned by a few rich blacks. Pretty much no change realistically.
