I think that if a child start behaving this way it should be treated as a mental illness and the child should be given therapy, drugs and rehabilitation to try to squash this abhorrent behavior out of them.

The reason for this is that it's not a "harmless" preference. Being trans usually leads people to cause permanent harm to their bodies using drugs or surgery and this self harm needs to be prevented in societies most vulnerable (children)
