I've found that evolutionary psychology and attachment theory pretty much solves the puzzle of the human condition, all the other disciplines just seem to circle jerk around the problem solving nothing and wasting loads of cash.

Problem with attachment theory is that it lays all the responsebility on the parents and their narcisistic ways which most people can't handle, so they use plebe psychology like cogntive behavior therapy and meds.

Objectivity is hard to find and exceptions are always possible. A lot of people who practice psychology aren't qualified enough to make judgements. If you want to know your own psychology, you should get as much opinions as you can. I can say easily half of the psychologists I had were inexperienced yet arrogant. Never take the opinion of a single individual too seriously and always think critically. Sadly a lot of people are easily manipulated to think someone's an expert when he uses a few fancy words.

Psychology is being used against you every day everywhere. Hurrr soft science!!! They are still using it to influence you and its working.

Its making progress just like any other field and its getting there. They have found for example that personality traits relate to certain parts of the brain and they can tell by brain scans weather you are liberal or conservative and a host of other things. Biology matters in how your personality forms and they are mapping that out with hard science.

You are forced to deal with the subjective world view a person has. What this means is that subjective world views does in fact matter, and some times it matters more then actual matter. The world of ideas and meanings are very real and a integral part of being a human and you can't escape that fact. I don't think people like that as its ambiguous and hard to pin that down in to specific hard science.

this is one of many issues in the study of psychology. another problem is that these reports have no true 0 scale. All scales are set by another human not by another means (like temp.) and many of these disorder's criteria change based on the society at the time and what is considered abnormal. Psychology has to change with each cohort because each one effects (or is it affects?) each generation as they mature with the change of technology and etc. Observational studies are much better than self reports and even though the court system uses witness testimonies they are often not exactly true and only a shade of the truth of what occurred.

I work in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team in the UK. Obviously we have a stack of psychologist, and a couple of psychiatrists, family therapists and so on.

Healthcare professional here. A lot of my peers, from SJWs to reformed Baptists, absolutely cheesed through the Psychology and Psychiatry course. The latter claimed that it was because it contradicted their world view, the only mental disorder is sin, etc.

Now while I'm not a completely pure and innocent person, I don't think sin completely sums up the most vicious of my anxiety attacks. Hell, my teenage years when I was part of the mental health system feel like a blur in hindsight; I feel like I was more or less a zombie then. Psychology seems to give possible suggestions, but the way I see it, we still don't really understand the human mind, and because of that I find psychiatry and medicating overall ineffective.

Then again docile zombies are what big pharma wants.

Stay away from anything involving Psychoanalysis or Psychodynamics, it's total bullshit. Jung might have some value in the Humanities, but that's about it.

Evolutionary Psychology is mental masturbation, and shit tier compared with Bio/Neuropsychology. The "Just so stories" charge is true.

The problem with Bio/Neuro stuff is that application is limited. There's great potential, but there's a reason we don't use brain surgery to treat mental problems directly. Because it's dangerous as all hell. Someday Bio/Neuro could be the way to resolve many mental issues, but that's a ways off.

Cognitive Modeling and Behaviorism work well together, but are incomplete without each other. Pure Behaviorism assumes human beings are empty vessels and Cognitive modeling alone tells us nothing about how the world influences thought. I have yet to see a compelling model for irrational thought, though. They're still not perfect, but they get fairly good results.
