Pretty big impact. Social media, general reading, porn, cameras.

Semi useful gadgets, that most people just use for inane social bullshit or time wasting.
I have one, but I basically just use it for calls, messages, browsing the internet, and it's camera functions.

Unfortunately for many people, especially young ones, such devices can easily become nearly the sole focus of their lives.
I saw it happen when I was living at my aunt's place, and my 10 and 9 year old cousins were allowed to buy some 100 euro Samsung phones.
Before getting those, they used to play a lot with each other and generally figure out things to do, but after having them, they started spending their free time almost solely playing on their phones.
There were also loads of arguments over them, both between the girls, and their parents.
In addition, one of them apparently had used her phone to search for porn, which I was quite disturbed to hear about.

In short, what I am trying to say here, via my personal anecdotes, is that a smartphone isn't a thing you should give to little kids, and if you do, you should supervise the shit out of it's use.

I have a dumb phone. I bought it for 65 dollars brand new. It is military certified (including water-proofed), so I know it is much less likely to break. My plan costs 15 dollars per month, gives me 350 minutes per month, unlimited texting, and 50mb of data (just enough to download any picture messages).

If, for some reason, I know I am going somewhere where I may want a distraction (which is twice per year at most), I will bring my PS Vita.

However, my internet connection at my house costs 30 dollars per month. I can't really fault the poor for trying to get all of their entertainment on one device, for one low monthly price (presuming they use Straight Talk)..

Does it matter that I actually owned a smart phone for a month, hated it, and returned it for a refund?

I found it extremely inefficient for anything I wished to do when compared to my Playstation Vita. I'm not saying iPhones and Androids can't do more than the Vita; they can. Its just the things they do aren't anything I'm interested in, or are more efficient to do on my laptop.

Texting was an absolute chore compared to dumbphones, call quality sucked compared to my dumbphone, which was 4 years older, and surfing the web was much slower than my laptop, or even my Vita, could provide.

Add to the fact that my new phone is much more durable, and that it cut my phone bill in half, and I found it a no-brainer.

I've had a Galaxy Note II for about 2 years now, and I pretty much only use it for work.

It's nice to be able to check emails on the go, and Google Maps is helpful when I'm traveling.

I haven't had a cellphone in 2 years.

Its amazing that i can now do my job (Wall street finance) with just a smartphone from almost anywhere in the world and just 15 years ago it took a whole office.

When i go out to lunch during work its not even like im unplugged from things I can instantly be connected to everything just like at my office if something unexpected happens I need to react to.
