A lot of Canadian voters don't give a flying fuck about policy, politics, or the economy as long as it isn't immediately effecting their lives (by which I mean making them feel the bad feels). It's because Canadians are largely politically disengaged. They piggyback on American politics.

Scheer doesn't have the gusto to make people care about politics enough to vote for him. Trudeau, on the other hand, has the bombastic gregariousness to make the simple act of voting for him a fun social event to share on social media.

To be more specific, they were extremely resistant to the country being officially bicultural or being declared an officially bicultural country because they felt that would mean admitting that they are second-class, at least symbolically. Even back in the late 60s and 70s, these groups were almost fully integrated. The point is that they, like most people, feel an attachment to their cultural heritage even if they are in reality not different from Anglos. The "for all intents and purposes" part did not and does not matter in the least.

In all honesty, the real issue with multiculturalism is that it gets pandered to, not the fact that it exists. Its existence isn't, in my view, ideal, but it is tolerable if there is a level of mutual respect (ie not enforcing diversity quotas and other such bullshit) between the cultures.

While I don't like the fact that first generation immigrants don't assimilate (unless they're already heavily Westernized before moving to Canada), trying to force people out of their cultural heritage doesn't work in the present. There is far too much awareness about various "cultural issues" for that to happen (let alone to have people vocally adopt what essentially equates to "white culture"). It doesn't matter if second or third-generation immigrants are, for all intents and purposes, Anglo-Canadian because they're already aware of their own actual heritage. Also, Indians don't fit into Western society because it's practically their cultural antithesis. There's a reason why so many of them stick to reserves and avoid using the multitude of hand-outs the government affords them to rapidly increase their social status... It's because they reject the whole concept. They don't want to "fit into" anything. They want to be Indians, or Native Americans, or whatever they want to call themselves (Ojibwe, Cree, Huron, Sioux, etc.).
