Louisiana here. In 2008 we elected Republican Bobby Jindal as governor. He was incredibly popular and successful in his first term. So much so that he ran again unopposed in 2013. In his second and final term (2 term limit for governors here), he decided to shore up his conservative bona-fides for his lackluster presidential run. Even with a Republican legislature we ran into a budget crisis due to our state constitution preventing money from being cut to everything except higher education and healthcare. Jindal received the blame and lost a lot of his popularity focusing on his presidential run for his whole second term. At the same time, Republican Senator David Vitter was looking to run for governor in 2015. He was a two term senator who was caught sleeping with a prostitute while wearing a diaper. He faced two opponents from Republicans and one major Democrat. The Republicans were Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle and Lieutenant Gocernor Jay Dardenne. Angelle and Vitter had a bitter primary and Dardenne refused to support Vitter. The Democrat, John Bel Edwards, ran as a moderate pro-gun, pro-life Dem who was a west point captain and lived by a virtuous honor code. Louisiana has a retarded system (same as France's presidential election) where every candidate runs together in a jungle primary and there is a runoff between the top 2. Vitter faced off against Honor Code and lost due to the prostitute scandal. As a result we elected a Dem because Republicans and good Christians "just could not vote for Vitter." Republicans won every other seat on the state-wide ballot overwhelmingly.
