I work for a company that actually handles YouTube censhorship of videos. There are a series of reasons listed to get it banned.
Nudity, War, terrorism, death and tragedy, profanity etc normal things. But the last option is just labeled, "Controversial". They give a list of things that count as controversial. Here's the thing though, they aren't outright banning them, just stifling them to impede the ascendency of the movement. The first step was demonetising "controversial content" (aka popular right wing videos that appealed to the youth). Now Stage 2 seems to be deliberately making the videos harder to find, and turning off the comments. Possibly turning off the viewcount too. This will serve many functions. It will dissuade newer people from joining and maybe starting their own channel. It will make people feel guilty or nervous about watching, worried they might be put on a government list. The lack of comments/views will blind us as to how popular our movement has become, which is demoralising.

They want to keep the enemy on their platform, but they want to cut the enemy down to size. They'll tolerate us as long as we're small and fringe enough not to influence other things like elections.
