Parks and museums is pretty much how I spend all my weekends, after rejecting my friends attempts to meet up. Bass is literally a big retard guitar. Tuned the same but it's so big and retard you can't even do most of the shit a guitar does. You just have to get used to slowing your mind down and playing very simply and evenly. I can play bass and I don't even own a bass.

Violin is another stringed instrument, meaning the finger conditioning and dexterity required has already been gained from the guitar practice. That's the hardest longest part and it's just deleted from practice. The alternate bowing is physically very similar to the alternate picking/strumming of guitar strings, mentally it's the same. The tuning is different, ZOMG. People tune their guitars to all kinds of crazy alternate tunings for fun.

His main instrument is the piano, which means his theory knowledge will be good. That is a very good foundation for the sax. I don't know much about wind instruments otherwise, messing around on a harmonica is much harder than mesisng around on a ukelele. If he's been doing it for years then no problem for him.

If he wanted to play drums he could do some fairly competent stuff in a month.

All tuned strings on all instruments contain the same intervals. Patterns across multiple strings will be different due to tunings, but the physical shapes made by your left hand fingers are the same.

As for the right hand, your mind is rapid firing up-down-up-down-up-down-up-down- across multiple strings. An electric guitar has huge sustain, enough for left hand only legato. He'll have to practice using the bow gliding for sustain and legato but that's hardly earth shattering.

Yes, the tunings of the strings are different, but all individual strings contain the same harmonic patterns. If you play the string halfway you get the octave. It is similar to learning languages.

If you are a native Portuguese speakers you can learn Spanish very easily, and you will also have a head start in for example German even though they are not obviously comparable language.

I know some guys personally who are at a really good level on some combination of guitar/bass/drums/piano/singing plus can play randomly pick up and play something like a violin, clarinet, fluet, trombone to a really good degree because their parents put them in class when they were kids. Some people are just really musically talented and are really dedicated to it.

Also, outside of music theory, if you have learnt how to become a really good guitar player for example, you have learnt how to become really good at an instrument, which means you will then know to get good at another instrument. Knowing how to learn effectively and efficiently is a really useful skill to have.

A lot of people might start learning guitar by themselves and just strum out Nirvana songs and waste a year doing that, but then if they become serious in their learning will realise the importance of setting schedules and practice plans to do their scales, chord progressions, modes, finger exercises, improv sessions in random keys at differing tempos etc, and once you know that is how you improve, you will not waste time hammering away at your next instrument wondering how it is one gets gud.
