Most decided to go with Brigham Young because he was iron fisted and took command but many of the saints went to Sidney Rigdon, James Strang, Joseph Smith III (including most of the Smith family including Emma), Alpheus Cutler, and others. The Utah church broke even more after polygamy was finally rejected and the polygamists claim even to this day to have proof that revelation is on their side. The breakdown of the LDS wasn't like say Luther leaving the Catholics and starting a new church. It was more like a vase dropped and broke into a million pieces and everyone was in the scramble to collect the pieces so they could say they were the true owner of the vase.
