What's it now? To be fair if you believe in having a minimum wage at all, it's much better to inch it up over time so businesses can plan and adjust rather than getting whacked with a big jump and having to dump something to keep going.

>You may also hear that the construction of the comparison group was flawed somehow, and that’s driving the results. I believe that the research team did as good of a job as possible, trying several approaches and presenting all of their findings extensively. There is no cherry-picking here. But more importantly, without getting too deep into the econometric weeds, my sense is that, given the evolution of the Seattle economy over the past two years, these results – if anything – *understate* the extent of the job losses.

It's all going to come to an end soon. Once the unskilled labor is automated away and millions of people are left to roam the streets homeless the real class war will start.

The next economic reset is coming. The rich never learn. History seems set to repeat itself again.
>>
>>131573923
>it's like liberals don't understand how economies work
They really don't. I was listening to a well meaning liberal try to describe this Seattle situation on the radio today. He had no concept of policies that were devaluing labor like illegal immigration. Every probably was totally independent of itself. This is probably a strategy to avoid cognitive dissonance. "We can do nothing to avoid Chinese slave wages now."
>>
>>131572947

Increasing minimum wage may be intended to improve the quality of life, but it is the wrong way to do it. You need to do what Netherlands does and make it cheap to hire workers while sibsidizing wages through government benefits. Wealth and standard of living is only raised when people make things.

You can't just do it on a municipal level, there needs to be at least state-level wage standards otherwise businesses will just leave the city districts and open up a few miles away, beyond the authority of the restrictions. Any businesses that can't move will just cut hours and staff and force the remaining staff to work harder.

you cant just dictate the value of anything based on assumption or whim. The market has to decide it.
Increasing the minimum wage simply devalues the money because you raised the bottom bar, which means that the lowest wage value to base all prices around is now higher.

If you want wages to go up, you have to make labor scarce. Once labor is in demand, businesses will have to allocate funds to fight for workers.

Key, just click on their links to studies in this article, they first one in which they claim "Workers stay on the job longer" also states "We find that minimum wages have a sizable negative effect on employment flows but not on stocks." I hope someone with more patience than me can go through all these links and point out their bullshit.
>>
it's interesting to see this thread every day, and every day it's the same shit.

people deserve a living wage. the same assholes who screech about people getting gibs and food stamps and cry about their taxes going to these things are the same people who are against people having enough money to survive. what the fuck is wrong with you people.

fuck you and all of your 'i've got mine, now you get yours' mentality. the entire system is designed to keep poor people poor. there is enough shit for everyone. give people a fair wage to live on and they wouldn't need gibs. why don't you shitheads understand this?
>>
>>131576262
There's literally nothing wrong with asking for a raise. The worst that happens is your boss gets to hear that his employees feel underpaid, and if he's biting his tongue about why you don't even deserve your existing wage then maybe you'll get to have a productive discussion about expectations.
>>
>>131576428
>Workers stay on the job longer
>We find that minimum wages have a sizable negative effect on employment flows but not on stocks
The second statement is the technical version of the second statement. Employment flows = turnover. Employment stocks = workforce.
You are not qualified to comment on this paper. Rake yourself.

From what I remember you guys usually refer to us (aka socialist nordic countries) as some democratic happy paradise but even we don't have minimum wages. At least Finland, Sweden and Denmark have no set minimum wage for sure and I see those mentioned as examples in your media often for 'happiness' or whatever. How do they even support it when ever our blatantly communist governments don't go that far?

for the majority of our history the min wage has been around 15 USD (with inflation taken in to account)

it's only in the last 30 years that this has changed. why is it a bad idea when 15 /hr had almost always been the case. who stands to gain from not paying a fair wage to workers? after all, you need consumers to be able to afford your products and if they have more money they spend more. (where as rich just sit on it and hide it overseas)

I don't know the answer other than that we've had minimum wages for a long time so people are used to having it.

Our work force is also way less unionized than Nordic countries so the argument is that the government needs to step in to "protect" workers

Minimum wage is fucking retarded

Michael Reich, a professor at Berkeley’s Center on Wage and Employment Dynamics, said the new Seattle study is flawed and should not be taken at face value. He argued the sample size is too small and excludes large-chain restaurants.

The report “is problematic” and its conclusions “unwarranted,” he said. Reich co-authored a recent study that argued Seattle’s higher minimum wage did not hurt employment.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. Why would lefties lie about something so easy to debunk?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_wage_in_the_United_States#History
>In 1933, the Roosevelt administration made the first attempt at establishing a national minimum wage, when a $0.25 per hour standard was set as part of the National Industrial Recovery Act. However, in the 1935 court case Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United States (295 U.S. 495), the US Supreme Court declared the act unconstitutional, and the minimum wage was abolished. In 1938, the minimum wage was re-established pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act, once again at $0.25 per hour ($4.23 in 2015 dollars[9]). In 1941, the Supreme Court upheld the Fair Labor Standards Act in United States v. Darby Lumber Co., holding that Congress had the power under the Commerce Clause to regulate employment conditions.[10]

The minimum wage had its highest purchasing power in 1968, when it was $1.60 per hour ($10.88 in 2014 dollars).

The real problem with minimum wage is too many jobs are covered by this wage.

I can sit on my ass and do nothing as a cashier at a gas station for minimum wage, or I can go inhale black tar flipping heavy fragile veneer boards at the lumber mill for minimum wage in 45'c factory heat.

Minimum wage needs to be there because employers are faggots.
>>
>>131572947
Minimum wage is like a whip to motivate a person to strive for a better job. If the wage is increased to a livable level, then people will just stay at that level until it is no longer livable.
People are just lazy.

...thats what would happen anywhere you did it. if you go from $8 to $13, and i only have $800 a day to pay employees, youre gonna have to start doing more work

did you think that making more money would just be for doing the same low level of work? youre gonna be working harder and fewer hours.

and then when you leave work with your 'bigger' paycheck, (the study actually shows its smaller), and you go buy food, home items, etc. they will cost more now because the price of those employees more expensive labor will have to be priced in

its like australia. they have a high min wage, but the cost for even the most basic shit is equally as high

Kitsap is looking better by the day.

What really worries me is Sawant's idea of a City income tax, which is probably illegal in Wash state, but they are trying anyway. Under this proposal they will tax gross income, not net income, so for example any gains you had selling a property you lived in for 5 years would be taxable, unlike as per Fed tax law.

Also, what they really should do to keep the price of property down, is phase in a foreign investment tax, like Vancouver did. That way, new money coming into the city could be used to build low income housing, and it would help put the brakes on speculation in the housing market. But that would be favoring the natives over the Chinese, so this in not on the SCC radar.

FYI, Anons, just for some context. Seattle house prices have risen over 5% in just the last month!!

You can't possibly be this stupid can you? Automatons replacing human workers was sped up exponentially by this. Inflation has been kept at bay by the economy thriving in sectors.

All those people getting more pay are receiving less hours and employers are giving out more shifts with less hours. Consequently, they qualify for less if not zero benefits through the employer, and each worker has less of a chance to progress with the employer.

All of which is bad for the poor who will be subject to this.

I don't know if you're aware but U4 counts discouraged workers (people who stopped looking)

It's usually only slightly higher than U3.

Right now nationally U4 is 4.5%

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/U4RATE

Why would workers be discouraged by making $15/hour? That doesn't even make sense.

I don't think right wingers understand how strong the labour market is at 2.9% unemployment. At this point, employees have the power and employers have to compete for labor which is the best thing for workers. It's also exactly what Republicans and corporate shills are most afraid of. It's their worst nightmare.
>>

china is it's own dystopian hellhole of economics. let's save that shit for the china threads. why do you think people don't deserve a living wage? the argument is "people have to compete", but we're not in the jungle. we live very comfy lives because of technology. we have to compete for what, exactly? who can fold a shirt fastest at a retail shop and put it back on a shelf? why must there be competition in a simple task like that? doesn't make any sense. the free market is cancer, its run by the money manipulators, all crashes and bubbles are planned, it's all just gambling at the top of the chain. you're literally defending a bunch of out of control, out of touch, gambling addicts.

The american states are in constant low-key social and economic war with one another in a variety of ways. This leads to generalized antipathy of other americans out of your locality - EX: Texans having pride in Texas and trashing local neighbors. Californian's thinking they're hot shit. New Yorkers thinking they're the center of the cultural universe. Everyone else thinking Californian's and Texans and New Yorkers are a bunch of asshats.

One major form of interstate competition is in taxes and incentives and regulations for businesses. In certain states, unions can survive better while in others, the owners are favored. Union benefits therefore have a hard time working on the national level in most things (there are exceptions, like Teacher's Unions though). Because a business that finds its workers trying to unionize can often figure out a way to move to another state and not have to meet those demands.

BUT, at the same time, we're indoctrinated to believe in the federal union for nationalistic reasons and democrats at least want ever more power to the non-local union powers of the federal gov.

Due to the generalized distrust of nearby local neighbors (which is natural and happens within any state too - see people from SoCal (LA) who make fun of people from NorCal (SF)) and the economic battles interstate, we can rarely figure out proper national level solutions. But when we do install them, they become incredibly "sticky" even if they don't make sense.

Minimum wage is one of these sticky issues. In lefty states they think its fine and want more of it, even though it ruins their economies in the long run. But in more competitive states (like Texas) they'd prefer to axe the concept. But since the national minimum wage exists already, your califonias block the will of the texases, and people stay acclimated to the bad idea.

it would mean only the huge chains (in the case of fast food) could afford to operate within the state. Other industries that aren't something that people interact with daily would literally leave. Minimum is just hat - not liveable. It is an incentive to better yourself.

All these shills arguing are wealthy trust fund kids who've never worked or lazy nig nogs who don't wish to contribute.
Also, less wages = less taxes, less taxes means we can't support niggers.

Maybe it is a good thing...

The problem is minimum wage still hasn't hit $15/hour, not for another two years. No study would be conclusive.

The best way to make a living wage is to enter an industry with less competition. If you want to reduce competition, convince women to get out of the work force.

One of the biggest tricks of the last century was getting women into the labor market en masse and as a norm. Women have never been "workers" traditionally (which isn't to say they never worked, they did, just for limited amounts of time before they married usually).

By doing this, the labor markets effectively lost their bargaining power and the payrate was cut in half over time. Increased competition in every field women entered meant that wage increases could be delayed and not kept up with inflation as finding replacements for roles was twice as easy as in the past (the only true negotiating tactic any worker has to use with managment is to withold their labor, which means replacement is always their greatest weakness, and women were the big replacement).

The absolute worst part of this all is that the feminists who insisted on this mass action thought they were doing it out of a "revolutionary leftist/marxist" spirit, even though the beneficiaries of this action were the capitalists that ran the companies. Certainly women have not benefited much from working - they have continually reported decreasing happiness since the 1960's and 70's in aggregate.

Feminism is for rubes to be used by business magnates and cause wage stagnation.

You want real wages to go up? Convince women to want to be housewives again.

2 find fucking money from somwhere else that they could make sure employers/ceos wouln't take a pay cut

Nope. At most $11/hr min wage for over 18. As I already talked about, the increase in wages led to employers giving out more shifts, but with less hrs per shift. Less hours = no qualification for benefits. Drop the wage down a bit and employers have more hours to give and employees will qualify for benefits.

Reason why tech and trade jobs are some of the best paid jobs out there now that I think about it.

They are not particularly social jobs which means women quickly feel unfulfilled in them and women in general don't have either the aptitude or meet the physical demands required of the jobs. Not to say there aren't smart women but even a smart woman wants a job where she is socially validated, can't do that in a cubicle/open office clacking away at a computer or installing high wiring through a building.
