As a White Canadian that have family roots that traced back before Canada was created I do agree with what she said. There's a lot of injustice that happened, and along with celebrating of past prime ministers, who were known as racist, should not be celebrated today. You have a point but I think its a bit of both. Its hard to argue against the historical maltreatment of the Natives having no relationship to their current state, but its also hard to argue that its completely to blame.
My experience with Natives (from all over Canada) is that they're either completely straight, no drinking, no smoking, no drugs and hard working. Or they're drinking, smoking, collecting a check and living in squalor. There's not much in between.
As long as they're getting free money they're not going to do good things as a people, the same can be said about any peoples getting free money.
But ultimately the responsibility for ones outcomes rests squarely on their shoulders.
And, The Native situation is fucked. Completely fucked with the drug abuse, the poverty, disease, incest and rape, crimes committed and covered up by Chiefs, suicide, etc.
And then you gotta take into account the rest of the population is supposed to fix it while they remain a Sovereign nation within nation, its a contradiction. Harper knew this, that's why he avoided Native issues.
As I said, they're not going to be getting any better and our grandchildren will be hearing the same complaints still when they have grandchildren of their own.
But that's just my opinion. I wasn't raised in anything close to resembling a reserve or in Native culture and the closest I've ever gotten to being Native is when my friends would call me nigger because I tan so dark kek
