Yeah, I only know about having one Scottish ancestor because my Great Grandfather wrote a book about him. He was in the army before WW1, moved to Ireland and met my Great Great Grandmother. Then he was called up for service, served in a cavalry regiment in WW1, after they landed in France and found that horse charges didn't make sense, he became a 'runner', carrying messages up and down the lines on a motorcycle. When the war was over he learnt how to fly planes and flew them recreationally.

It's a curiosity thing. A lot of us will never know about our history unless we dig deep into it, due to most of us not having a long history in the United States. Most of us only have American culture, so it's interesting to see where your roots were. Additionally, since we're a well known melting pot, you'll find a big variety of history depending on the person.

I may have generalized a bit on my mom's side. The German/Polish heritage gets confusing. They came from all different German regions (Alsace, Bavaria, Prussia) and the Poles might actually have been Swedish. No clue. My grandmother certainly looks Polish though.

My grand-parents came to the US from Uruguay by walking to elope away. Grandma was suppose to marry a rich guy and my grandpa was their limo driver. They walked from Uruguay all the way to Texas. Never got to know them since they died when my mom was 13, one from Lou gehrig's and the other got murdered due to drugs but would've died to breast cancer anyways. ftDNA, as much as I love its community projects, has one of the worst autosomal admixture models.
And the hilarious thing is that their recent myOrigins update, which throws these "Trace results" in isn't even part of some insidious ideological plot by mister (((Greenspan))), it's literally just a move to sate a customer base of liberal retards who were disappointed that their original myOrigins report showed them out to be nothing but white.

I've tested a lot of my family members. Here's my breakdown of criticisms of ftDNA's myOrigins model

1) the myOrigins 2.0 update has somewhat rectified it, but only partially - I have centuries of documented German/West Germanic heritage, which myOrigins entirely assigned to Scandinavian, and myOrigins 2.0 still partially assigns to Scandinavian, when I have absolutely zero ancestors on record from any of the Nordic countries.

2) Both my half sister and I have <1% Austronesian or w/e as a trace result. Neither of our shared grandparents have this as a read-out. None of my grandparents full stop have it as a read-out. It's a spurious mis-assignment of ancient Eurasian DNA, likely.

3) It's established that my maternal grandfather has about 2% genetic affinity with East Asians, likely through Russian Siberian heritage. This is usually assigned to groups such as Yakut, who are north Siberian, in Russia's territory. ftDNA has instead assigned it to South Amerindians. That's a fairly huge discrepancy. One thing though, Europeans, Siberians and Amerindians alike all share Ancient North Eurasian as a genetic component - a population cluster that arose out of the Western Hunter Gatherers, making me suspicious as to whether the assignment of any of his affinity to East Asian holds any water at all.

It depends on what you're after.
The modularity and community support on ftDNA makes it the perfect site for anoraks (like me) who get way too deep into haplotyping etc, I've taken their Big Y discovery test.
The modularity of their tests means it tends to be more affordable if say, you only care about autosomal admixture. You can take the family finder for a good price (especially in sales), and have raw data you can transfer to gedmatch.

ftDNA are lacking in their aforementioned autosomal model accuracy (which isn't the biggest issue, esp with tranferrable raw data to a free gedmatch account), and also if you want broad haplotyping. ftDNA is more an all-or-nothing for haplogroup testing.

If you're not bothered about haplogroups, there are ten to the dozen companies out there doing autosomal as well. ancestry being the main one that comes to mind, i haven't ever used them but it's still an option.

what I'm interested in, is finding a good way to have an autosomal test and general haplotyping as a package. best example of this is 23andme, but when people talk about these DNA companies being dodgy, 23andme is by far the most suspect of all of these companies.

I'm currently waiting on a LivingDNA test, which is a similar autosomal/general haplotyping package, which could turn out to be a good alternative to 23andme, although their workflow is a bit clunkier apparently, and i don't think they have raw data transfer available yet.

for most of /pol/s purposes, 23andme offers the best package. esp the ancestry only package where it's available. decent autosomal model, plus data transfer for gedmatch, plus general haplotyping. it's just a pity they're so dodgy.

Honestly, a lot of the time I suspect it comes down to the completeness of their reference population databases.
For all of the differences between ethnicities, it's a given that we share common ancestry after splitting from chimps and bonobos etc. I suspect it's a matter of basal human DNA, pre-dating the splitting of human ethnic groups, and then becoming extremely diffuse, so that a given strand might exist in say, 0.1% of humanity worldwide.
Most of the time they'll have a large enough cohort of people from all over the world to determine what is in actuality common human DNA. however, if it's a particularly diffuse strand, they might only detect it in say, their west african reference population, and not in their european - or vice versa. and so it becomes erroneously associated with that population.
