True Detective is great because, while it doesn't actually have a grand conspiracy behind it beside the small elite family from the area it takes place; it works within a framework that is even worse than if it did. Just like the actual case its based on, the beliefs the elites practice can be concluded by anybody who reads that deep. The ancient practices are known, the esoteric "magic" they seek isn't just something invented in the modern day. The church that True Detective is based on wasn't, in my opinion, part of some grand conspiracy either; just simply nutjobs who came to the same beliefs as the elites.
