Yes, because they were fighting for survival, in that cases you want to give guns to anyone who can hold a weapon, even the children. And you want to share resources evenly (armies are kinda commulist).

But any war eventually becomes a matter of demographics and technology. If ISIS had a larger army and air support they probably would have killed the Kurds in Syria and Iraq. Whether you have women soldiers or not is not that important.
