Meir Amit, head MOSSAD (Israeli Intelligence), was tasked with travelling to America and meeting with Robert McNamara, then acting U.S. Secretary of Defense. Amit asked McNamara if the U.S. would support Israel if Israel attacked Egypt first. The answer was very simply “No.” The U.S. could not condone Israel attacking first because the U.S. would need the support of the People and Congress, neither of which would occur if Israel is seen as the aggressor. On the 5th of June, Israel went to war anyway. It’s planes destroyed airfields in the Sinai, destroying most of Egypt’s air force.

The Soviet Union was also boosting its military presence in the area. Communist Russia moved twenty warships to the Eastern Mediterranean as a show of force. In response, the Pentagon ordered all American aircraft and ships be kept one-hundred miles away from the coast. But the USS Liberty, for (((some reason))), was not given this order.

The USS Liberty was a spy ship like no other. Equipped with 45 antennas and commanded by U.S. Navy Officer William L. McGonagle, the crew contained highly skilled communications analysts and translators whose goal was to receive and pass on intelligence to the highest levels of Government. As the Liberty sailed closer to the war zone, the Commander requested an armed escort but was denied because according to the Pentagon, they were in International waters and flying an American flag—they had nothing to worry about. On the third day of the war, Israel had taken the West Bank, and the Liberty arrived safely at her destination off the Sinai coast.

At 5 am, on June 8th, the crew of the Liberty reported hearing the sound of Israeli planes circling them, roughly ten times, apparently verifying the ship belongs to their ally, the United States. The crew reported feeling reassured and safe knowing Israel, America’s greatest ally, was watching over them. But at 2pm the Officers on the Bridge noticed three delta wing planes heading towards them, and Israel attacked.

The portholes were blown out instantly, and the decks shredded by machine gun fire. The crew’s attempt to send out an SOS signal failed, as their
frequencies were jammed. Once Israel destroyed the Liberty’s transmitting antennas, they dropped napalm on the ship’s deck trying to prevent the crew from fixing the antennas. At last, an SOS signal was sent out by the Liberty, but only because personnel were climbing the antennas and putting up long-wires while being shot at. At the end of the air attack, eight men were dead and seventy-five injured. But Israel wasn’t done yet.

Next, Israel sent its ships to torpedo the Liberty. When the first torpedo hit, the ship lifted out of the water and slammed back down. It began to list by 10 degrees, and the crew feared she would turn over. The Liberty, having lost steering control, was now a sitting duck. But the Liberty’s SOS signal was finally picked up by the American 6th Fleet, 500 miles away off Crete. The United States ordered retaliation. America readied two nuclear armed bombers in response— America was about to launch a nuclear strike against Egypt, the Liberty’s presumed attacker. But, once the U.S. learned it was Israel who launched the attack, Defense Secretary McNamara ordered the recall of the planes and the retaliatory attack was cancelled. Interestingly, McNamara also refused to send any support aircraft to the Liberty for its protection.

Meanwhile, the Liberty was still under attack. Torpedoes and machine gun fire threatened to sink the her, and its crew received their orders: prepare to abandon ship. However, the crew could not abandon the Liberty because the Israeli planes had purposely destroyed their life boats, all of which were now either gone or on fire. But at last, Israel called off its assault. The attack was over, but now the coverup would begin.

At 10 am, news the Liberty had been attacked by Israel reached President Johnson, who believed the attack was intentional. Despite knowing the truth, Johnson chose to save Israel from international embarrassment rather than defending our own sailors, and he officially accepted Israel’s apology and explanation: the attack was on accident.

Israel claimed its entire military force, from its Navy to Air Force, did not know the USS Liberty was an American ship, because according to them, it was not flying an American flag. But at the time of the attack, the NSA also had a high-flying eavesdropping plane above the action. It was an EC 121, and the pilots agreed they heard comments from both the Israeli pilots and the torpedo ship personal mentioning the American flag flying on the USS Liberty. Furthermore, in 1991 Dwight Porter, the Ambassador to Lebanon during the 1967 war, told columnist Robert Novak that after the attack, the CIA Station Chief handed him intercepted messages between the Israeli War Room and their planes. Their pilots were given orders to attack the ship, but replied it was an American ship—they could see the American flag. Israeli HQ responded “You have your orders.”

Those who survived the attack on the USS Liberty were ordered to never talk about the incident, or they would face a Court Martial, imprisonment or “worse.” Even today the U.S. Government refuses to conduct a formal investigation into the attack. However, the surviving crew are now talking and claim the attack was deliberate. How else could Israel jam the Liberty’s frequencies? They would have to know which frequency the Liberty was on, and to know that they would have to know it was an American ship.

The attack lasted two hours. 34 American’s were murdered and another 174 were injured. Why? Because the U.S. refused to support Israel as the aggressor? Is that the petty reason all that death occurred? We may never know. Regardless, in the end Israel secured is prize: control of Jerusalem’s old city, putting them one step closer to achieving Greater Israel.
