US sanctions more people, firms over N. Korea arms - Treasury
The US on Thursday blacklisted nine companies and government institutions, including two Russian firms, and three people for their support of North Korea’s weapons program, the Treasury Department said. It sanctioned a major North Korean zinc company, the Korea Zinc Industrial Group, and the Korea Computer Center, which it said is a state-run information technology research center. The measures on Thursday freeze any funds the individuals or companies may have in the US, and bar Americans from dealing with them. The US has turned to both unilateral and international sanctions as one of its main tactics in cutting off funds and supplies to the reclusive state’s government and military. (Reuters)

>The Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) have captured the Al-Sakar residential compound in southern at the ISIS stronghold of Al-Ba’aj near the border with Syria.

PMU fighters have evacuated all the civilians from the residential compound temporarily until it is fully secured. Moreover, The PMU is currently working to siege ISIS militants in the town of Al-Ba’aj from the south after it managed to capture most of the northern areas.

A spokesman for the PMU, Al-Assadi, denied all reports that the PMU had officially entered the Syrian territory. He said that the PMU is an official part of the Iraqi Armed Forces and has no presence outside the Iraqi territory.

There have been fake news that the PMU has captured some SDF-held villages in north of the Syrian city of Deir Ezzor.

Israel disappointed at Trump’s decision not to move US embassy
Israel on Thursday expressed disappointment at the decision of US President Donald Trump to sign a waiver to delay relocating the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. “Though Israel is disappointed that the embassy will not move at this time, we appreciate today’s expression of President Trump’s friendship to Israel and his commitment to moving the embassy in the future,” part of a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. It added that “Israel’s consistent position is that the American embassy, like the embassies of all countries with whom we have diplomatic relations, should be in Jerusalem, our eternal capital.” (Reuters)

>Trump waives law requiring US move its embassy to Jerusalem
President Donald Trump has temporarily waived a law requiring the US to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. Trump’s move to renew the waiver for six months keeps the US embassy in Tel Aviv for now. Trump has said he’s reviewing whether to fulfill his campaign promise to move it to Jerusalem. Trump was facing a Thursday deadline to renew the waiver or see the State Department lose half its funding for its overseas facilities. Presidents of both parties have renewed the waiver every six months for years. Israel considers Jerusalem its capital, but the Palestinians claim east Jerusalem for the capital of a future state. The US says its policy on Jerusalem hasn’t changed and that Jerusalem’s status must be negotiated between Israelis and Palestinians. (AP)

44 migrants, including babies, die of ‘thirst’ in Niger desert
At least 44 migrants, including women and babies, were found dead after their vehicle broke down in the desert of northern Niger while on the way to Libya, local officials said Thursday. “The number of migrants who died in the desert is 44 for now,” said Rhissa Feltou, the mayor of Agadez, a remote town on the edge of the Sahara that has become the smuggling capital of Africa. Last year, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) recorded 335,000 migrants heading northwards out of Niger. The Red Cross has dispatched a team to the site “to gather information” on the circumstances. (AFP)

Germany and China vow to deepen ties amid Trump concerns
Germany and China vowed on Thursday to expand their partnership and pledged to continue fighting climate change, sending a signal to Washington hours before US President Donald Trump announces if he will quit a global climate deal. Berlin was the first stop in Europe for Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, amid growing concern in Germany over some of Trump’s policies, especially on climate change and protectionism. He was due to head later for Brussels. “China has become a more important and strategic partner,” Merkel said at a news conference with Li, pointing to political, economic, social and cultural ties. At least 7 civilians killed by ISIS mortar fire in Mosul - report
At least seven civilians were killed and 23 wounded by Islamic State mortar shells as they tried to flee Mosul’s militant-controlled Zanjili district on Thursday, Iraqi police said. Zanjili is part of the enclave that remains in the hands of IS in the northern Iraqi city, alongside the Old City center and the Medical City hospitals complex. The wounded from Zanjili were taken to a field clinic, a police officer said. They were part of the first group of civilians who have managed to escape. Several dozen other civilians managed to reach government-held lines unhurt, using the same exit route, the officer said. (Reuters)

Sweden says EU aid should depend on acceptance of refugees
The EU, facing smaller dues when Britain leaves, should make aid to poorer member states conditional on their willingness to accept asylum seekers, Sweden’s Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson said. Both Poland and Hungary have refused to take refugees fleeing wars in the Middle East. Like many net contributors to the EU budget, Sweden wants to cut the bloc’s spending in the long term, to avoid having to increase dues when Britain, also a net payer, leaves the EU. The German government, another net contributor, has said in a document that members failing to meet EU standards on the rule of law could lose access to financing. If implemented, both proposals would affect mostly Poland and Hungary, which have based their refusal to admit refugees on concerns over terrorism. (Reuters)

Germany to check Afghan security before deporting migrants
Chancellor Angela Merkel says Germany will continue to closely evaluate the security situation in Afghanistan before deporting rejected asylum seekers back there. Merkel was asked by reporters Thursday if the government would still consider deporting Afghans following a deadly attack in Kabul on Wednesday. The chancellor said every case would be checked and the focus would be on the deportation of criminal Afghans whose asylum pleas had been rejected. Germany canceled a plane that was to take deportees to Kabul on Wednesday. That same day, nine police officers were injured in a violent protest enforcing the deportation of an Afghan student in the southeastern city of Nuremberg. (AP)

UK military ends week-long counter-terrorism deployment
Britain’s Ministry of Defense has announced an end to its week-long deployment to help police cope with an increased threat of an extremist attack after the Manchester concert bombing. Chief of the Defense Staff Stuart Peach said Thursday that roughly 1,000 military personnel had been deployed along with police as the terrorist threat was raised to “critical” after the attack that killed 22 people and injured dozens more. The official threat level has been lowered from “critical” - the highest level, meaning an attack may be imminent - to “severe,” which means the government believes an attack is highly likely. (AP)

EU could respond to ‘market distortions’ if US quits climate pact - Schulz
If President Donald Trump quits the Paris Climate Agreement, US producers will gain a competitive advantage over their European rivals, creating market distortions to which the EU will have to respond, German Chancellor candidate Martin Schulz said. “If Mr Trump wants to leave the climate pact, then we must talk openly about trade relations and market distortions,” Schulz said, suggesting that backsliding on environmental standards could harm the US’s access to the world’s largest market. Schulz is the center-left Social Democratic party’s candidate to oust conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel in a September election. His party is currently running second in polls behind Merkel’s conservative bloc. (Reuters)

US, European troops open massive navy Baltic Sea exercise
Some 4,000 US and European troops are taking part in the annual Baltic Operations navy exercise on the Baltic Sea, designed to enhance their joint response capabilities. The 45th edition of the so-called BALTOPS exercise aims to demonstrate the resolve among NATO and its partner nations to ensure security and readiness to defend the region. The exercise involves maritime, air and ground forces from 14 nations, with some 50 ships and submarines and over 50 aircraft. It opened Thursday in Poland’s navy port of Szczecin and will run through June 16. BALTOPS began in 1972 as a NATO exercise. Former eastern bloc nations joined in 1993, as they opened efforts to join the alliance. (AP)

Philippines’ Duterte says Mindanao rebellion not Maute but ‘purely ISIS’
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday said a rebellion on the southern Mindanao island was not the work of rebels from the Maute group but was “purely ISIS,” and he had long warned of Islamic State’s imminent arrival in his country. Duterte said Islamist militants being driven out of Iraq and Syria were looking for a new base and the siege of Marawi City was planned a long time ago. He also reiterated that the radicals in the southern Philippines were getting funding from the illicit drugs trade, and said the Maute brothers, who the militant group is named after, were involved in narcotics. UAE-backed forces gain control over Aden airport - officials
Yemeni security officials say that forces backed by the United Arab Emirates have taken over the airport in the southern city of Aden, further fueling tension between internationally recognized President Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi and the UAE. The officials said that one soldier died in clashes over the airport Wednesday morning. The UAE contributed forces to the Saudi-led coalition that secured Hadi’s return to the country following his exile in 2014 when Shiite rebels seized the capital, Sanaa. However, tensions grew between Hadi and the UAE over control of the strategic Aden airport. Yemen’s second largest city serves as the temporary capital of Hadi’s government. (AP)

Yeah, but the problem is the current political and financial elite will just improve itself through cybernetics and gene manipulation, taking control of automatization, once it fully occurs and enforce its will on the rest of us, the plebs with drone armies that outfight any man. There's no way we could fight back at that point. Game over.

> Munzer: UN Under-Secretary-General’s report on Syria includes many fallacies and neglects the main reasons behind suffering of Syrians

http://sana.sy/en/?p=107271

New York, SANA- Chargé d’affaires of the Syrian delegation to the UN Munzer Munzer stressed that the main reasons behind the
suffering of the Syrian people are the terrorist organizations which are supported, financed, and exploited by the governments of well- known countries.

Addressing the UN Security Council in a session on Syria on Tuesday, Munzer said that after reviewing the 39th monthly report of the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, the Syrian government expresses its regret and deep concern over the report’s approach which reflects the stances of certain governments and parties which deliberately distort facts and deny the main reasons for the situation in Syria.

He said that Syria has sent two identical letters to the UN Secretary General and the President of the UN Security Council which include its detailed response to this report, wondering about the intention of the authors of the report which is supposed to focus on means of tackling the humanitarian situation, but instead they insist to force issues into it which have no relation to the humanitarian issue in a way that contradicts the facts of the ground.

Munzer pointed out that some governments of the Council’s member states continue to impose coercive unilateral economic measures on the Syrian people that deprive them from the basic requirements of their life, affirming that all the Syrians are besieged and exhausted by the coercive unilateral economic measures adopted by these states which shed crocodile tears on the Syrian people, particularly the US and EU countries.

He noted that the areas which the UN erroneously classified as besieged are actually controlled by armed terrorist groups which impose a siege on their residents and use them as human shields, and prevent aid from entering to those areas.

it will be less dramatic than that. if u use spell check u are using rudimentary machine learning.
u wont be any different, u'll just outsource more of the detail to machines.

>Russia concerned over Syria’s future borders: Putin

https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/russia-concerned-syrias-future-borders-putin/

(TASS) Moscow remains apprehensive about the potential danger of Syria’s dismemberment and hopes that the de-escalation zones will not serve as a blueprint for any new borders, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with the world’s mass media bosses.

“Does the possible dismemberment of Syria arouse concern? It certainly does,” the Russian leader stressed. “We are establishing de-escalation zones now and we are afraid that these de-escalation zones may turn into a blueprint for future borders.”

He emphasized that Russia hopes these safety zones would serve “to interact with the Assad government, to start at least some kind of a dialogue, some interaction, as this would help future political cooperation in order to restore Syria’s control over its entire territory and preserve the country’s territorial integrity.”

>Syrian Army makes significant progress near last ISIS stronghold in East Aleppo (map update)

https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/syrian-army-makes-significant-progress-near-last-isis-stronghold-east-aleppo-map-update/

yrian Arab Army’s (SAA) elite Tiger Forces division made significant gains in eastern Aleppo countryside today capturing several sites from the so-called “Islamic State” (IS, formerly ISIL/ISIS).

Striking IS positions west of their last stronghold in the region, Maskanah town, government forces managed to seize Grain Silos area.

After that, SAA pushed further soutward having eventually imposed full control over Juday’ah Kabir and Judaya’h Sagheer villages.

IS jihadists continue demonstrating fierce resistance to advancing Syrian military, literally fighting for every single position.

However, with Maskanah town now surrounded from three flanks – by SAA forces from north and west, and by Lake Al-Assad from the east, – militants are not likely to hold their bastion as Tiger Forces methodically advance in the town’s outskirts leaving only one way for jihadists to withdraw.

>Fierce clashes around Aden airport kill two

https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/fierce-clashes-around-aden-airport-kill-two/

>SANA’A, YEMEN (2:22 A.M.) – Two soldiers were killed and 2 others wounded in clashes between rivaling factions around Aden international airport. The opponents traded gunfire and rocket strikes throughout Tuesday night until the early hours of Wednesday.

The fight followed the escalation of a dispute between the airport’s security director and his deputy. The security director backed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) refused to transfer his duties to the deputy, who is backed by Saudi Arabia.

Eyewitnesses reported, that during the clashes Apache attack helicopters and planes of the Saudi led coalition crowded Aden’s airspace.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE formed with others a coalition to fight Yemen’s alliance of Houthis and the Yemenite military, in reaction to the ousting of Yemen’s Saudi backed President Hadi. Nevertheless Saudi Arabia and the UAE are fiercely competing for influence in the Gulf region.

Their rivalry showed in Aden before, when Hadi was refused landing rights at the airport by it’s UAE linked authorities. In response troops controlled by Hadi layed siege on the airport and fired the director. The Saudis first could mediate, but after another similiar incident Hadi with Saudi Arabia’s backing fired the UAE affiliated Governor of Aden, Major General Aidarous Al-Zubaida.

Shortly after on May 11, Zubaidi formed the transitional political council for the south, to administrate 5 southern provinces in independence from Hadi. The UAE while mainly aiding the Saudi led coalition with special forces are financing various independent militant groups in the south, one reportedly with 15000 members.

>Yemeni forces shoot down a Saudi spy plane in northwestern Yemen

https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/yemeni-forces-shoot-saudi-spy-plane-northwestern-yemen/

SANA’A, YEMEN (4:20 P.M.) – On Tuesday, Yemen’s air defense forces have brought down a Saudi-led coalition’s reconnaissance plane in Midi desert in the province of Hajjah, western Yemen.

Earlier, on May 14, the military and the Popular Committees (Houthis) were able to shoot down a Saudi Arabian reconnaissance vehicle in Midi too.

It is noteworthy that joint forces of Yemeni Republican Guard and Popular Committees recently prevented several infiltration attempts by Saudi-backed mercenaries in the border area of Midi.

Dozens of coalition’s soldiers were killed in clashes, including the commander of the Sudanese forces on Midi front; hundreds were wounded. Besides, Saudi-led coalition suffered heavy material losses.
>[Graphic 18+] Six Saudi soldiers killed by Houthi forces in Najran

BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:00 P.M.) – At least six Saudi soldiers were killed by the Houthi forces in the Najran region of Saudi Arabia, Saturday, Hezbollah’s Military Media reported.

According to Hezbollah’s media wing, the six Saudi soldiers were killed when Houthi fighters carried out a surprise operation near a Saudi military sight in the Najran region.

The media wing also added that the targeted military encampment was the Al-Fawaz Base.

You have to understand the conflict. Saudi soldiers dont want to fight, the fight doesnt make sense to them. Theyre killing fellow arabs and muslims over something that isnt logical to them, so morale is low. Ive heard some saudi soldiers are intentionally missing targets.
While the houthis are defending their lands, the saudi soldiers feel theyre fighting for the personal pleasure of a ruler in a war that makes no sense to them.
>>
>>128033322
Houthi's live on their land. The saudi's live in airconditioned palaces.

If the fight was about the last puff pastry in the kitchens, or maybe the last bubblebath drop for the bathroom, or perhaps a serving boy in the tight pants, perhaps then the saudi's would have the upper hand.

There are more gypsies as a proportion in Poland than syrian kurds before this war ( less than 6%) So the argument of a gypsy homeland in poland is stronger than this Rojava.

No Syrians or Arabs are fighting for gypsy rights in Poland, yet polish are stealing arab land with kurds. Control your borders better.

My point is though, it isn't an entirely malicious act. While yes, it does mean they're going elsewhere and will likely be able to fight the SAA more. It just means less fighting for the occupying and besieging force, and being able to capture ground quicker.

Earlier in the war the SAA would use this tactic heavily. By surrounding the area on three sides (sometimes 4 with a small corridor out), opening them up to heavy fire to force them the other direction, capturing land by avoiding a more drawn out siege in the area.

>>128039812
So if the SAA started beheading POWs or dumping them into cages trapped under water, that would be fine because they're government instead of terrorists?

Take your blinders off. Either it's a bad tactic, or it's a good tactic. That's like being a boxer and saying it's fine for you to punch your opponent, but crying when he punches you back.

>>128041382
Untrue, Palmyra was taken relatively quickly and painlessly, and Dayr Hafir fell without a shot fired.
While yes it's obvious the plan is to drive ISIS south of the Euphrates and take the land for the SDF, while trying to make things more difficult for the SAA. That detail in particular is normal considering the offensive. It's the offensive itself which is grounds for questioning, as well as the status of the SDF.

I notice that a lot here. Kids dont know the demographics of Syria and just want to send their rejects to fight with the Rojava.
Imagine if arabs sent people to fight for Scottish independence or if the 4 million turks suddenly wanted a part of Germany and arabs helped them.
But hey, for them sending these commies to steal Syrian land is OK. They dont even know theyll go back and cause them harm.
If they want a kurdistan, let them make one in Europe. No one wants it in the Middle East. One Israel is enough there.

technically correct.
however, in /sg the colloquial use of jihadi/headchopper/moderate is interchangable and is specifically used to denote those of a sunni 'caliphate' leaning sub-grouping of sunni's, particularly affected by wahabi teaching. no attempt is made, by /sg, when using the term jihadi to imply any connection with the higher ideals of jihad, or the correct technical possibilities of meaning. It is purely aimed at the enemies of assad.

further it should be noted that hezbollah is a islamic NATIONALIST organisation. Much the same as say the taliban, or even those crazy dudes who probably run around polish forests on weekends training for some patriotic duty they hope to carry out one day. they would be catholic NATIONALISTS.

The point is that they have Nationalist agenda's that clash and do not co-incide with the ideas of Islamists - who have no Nationalist foundations in their philosophy.

Conflating the two terms only serves to shed heat, and it creates little light
>>

As for FSA.. Hard to say anything about "FSA", because these were the gangs of 10-500 people that pretended to be united under one banner, but after all they fight each other in Ramadan, while they're besieged..
And at least 30% of them is Syrian, maybe more, but it's expected from a Sunni majority country.

>semantics still apply, no matter the actions

they do this exactly - and therefore it is most instructive to use the semantics properly. when used properly there is no confusion what-so-ever.

an islamist and an islamic nationalist are by definition enemies - since the islamist can only recognise the political authority of the caliphate whereas the islamic nationalist recognises the political authority of a national authority that is not the caliphate. Hezbollah is a lebanese resistence organisation that fights against israeli incursions into lebanon. right now they are preventing the fight with islamists from ever arriving in lebanon.

Here is analogue. If I had roach problem in my house I would start cleaning room by room allowing them to escape from room I'm cleaning now to still infested rooms. That is ok because it is my problem and I'll deal with it sooner or later. But if I would allow them to escape from my house to another house. That is not ok because I create problem for other people.

That's why it is ok for things like Aleppo/Yarmouk because terrorist remain SAA problem and not for Mosul or Raqqa since this create more problems to SAA who do not fight there right now.
>>
>>128047513
Alright, alright, I get your idea.
Jihad has to be pejorative in /sg context as it's used to desribe the radicalised religious elements, nevertheless when Hezzies call themselves that it's straight semantics and there's no denying they're practising Jihad as well, but on a nationalist note.
I just wanted to clarify that they themselves use the term, while for some it may seem confusing, it's still correct.
But you're right, maybe I shouldn't point it out, because /sg meaning of Jihad is basically.. Well.. Jihad.

So how do we call organizations like Afgan militias trained in Iran, or Iraqi Harakat al-Nujaba, all under Hezbollah banner?
I doubt they care about Israeli incursions towards Lebanon, I think they're on "better to risk my life in the desert, than eat dirt for the rest of my life" note.

>they're practising Jihad as well, but on a nationalist note.

Yes, and their practice of jihad is sort of immaterial, in that it is merely the 'cultural meme' they use to mobilise to affect a nationalist outcome. Other cultures use other memes.

It's actually a good question because the press likes to play to that conflation narrative where tables and chairs are all the same because they all have 4 legs.

Fear of Islam I recon is so high that you could get many people to run away from you if u tried to give them a big cheque for free as long as you used the word islamic somewhere in your sentence.

Our papers in the early 2000's characterised the taliban as 'national resistence', whereas international bootlicking whoredogs of the international media called them islamic fundamentalists - creating a narrative that made no sense.

However, labelling the taliban as national resistence suddenly makes the picture much clearer.

So u are right the semantics is of absolute importance, because if u not careful you will be chair-tabelling cows until the sun sets. and thats when the leopards come out.

Exactly, and the comparision with Taliban is very accurate, altough sometimes I wonder how Iranian and Lebanese nationalisms relate to sending their troops to Syria.
If it would've been put into the context of 'preventive measures' (because indeed islamist takeover of Syria would've threatened both Lebanon & Iraq) than I could agree to the nationalist goals of their actions.
Taliban.. Well they're nationalists. Media have their goals, and are just blatantly lying. Can't blame poor Pashtun nationalists for wanting to grow and sell poppy and trading arms the ((others)) supplied them with.

>in Iran, or Iraqi Harakat al-Nujaba, all under Hezbollah banner
So the term Hezbollah just means 'party of god'.
It's not like KFC or macdonalds. You don't have to write and ask for permission to use the name. Anyone can be a hezbollah.

While I read a paper sometime back, an overview of assads fighting forces, it noted that all of these militias now have a basic and interchangable and interoperable role as a result of all this combat - i.e. they can all work together

However, the iraqi hezbollah is first for iraq, just like normal hezbollah is primarily for assad and lebanon.

The name is generally a good clue to their shia leanings, and the fact that Iran usually trains and funds them. But they are separate organisations.

Iran has during this war managed to consolidate authority over many shia militias ( shi crescent). one of irans strategic goals in this war is to create a 'safe route' from iran to lebanon. the yanks are trying to prevent this.

so iran is playing for big stakes in this game. and those stakes do threaten israel indirectly, in that israelis will lose the ability to act with impunity of iran manages to arm hezbollah as they would wish to.

other hezbollah orgs may or may not support an attack on israel. primarily they are there for national defence.

I cant wait, kurds need to bend over and submit to Assad. I hope he bans their shit language. Saddam was right about them and their Zionist made nationalism.

I'd love to have a source on that paper.
I agree that Iran brings lots of various, sometiems otherwise insignificant militias under their banner.
Sure they're there for the national defence, that's what organizations based on nationalism do, and it's a good thing, as generally Shia are threatened by Wahabism nowadays.
I doubt Hezbollah is seriously considering attacking Israel, but after all the shenanigangs with capturing and receiving weapons and armour - they have all the means to give it a try.
