This isn't a thing in England. It's more common in Northern Ireland, but in England it's rare for homes to deviate in style or colour. It's even rarer for them to be made of wood.

For people trying to figure out the rug.

It's almost certainly an Aubusson or "chinese" style rug.

Pic related is the closest thing I found, but it's still not quite right. The rug in the picture has a slightly different design, and the tassels appear to be still on the rug.

But there's definitely a floral pattern on the outer edges, and in the center lotus. You can see the green and pink if you look closely.

When you look at the rug, you can see the sort of ) shaped bits in white on the blue? That's a VERY distinctive shape that commonly appears on Aubusson rugs. Pic is another example. of it. Look at how the shapes are almost identical.

The rug isn't an ink blot style, it's a kind of victorian English style of rug. Also I'm pretty sure I remember buying a very similar rug to this one from alders in Leeds in the late 90s. My aunt and uncle have one that is even more similar as ours had a red background and theirs had the dark blue background seen in the photo.

The rug that everyone keeps speaking of looks more like a welcome mat/door mat to me. They're pretty much always the same material/colour, and if you look really closely there looks to be another underneath. That's exactly what I did with the last one I had, I 'doubled up'.
