There was reports that ISIS attacked it again in December after they retook Palyrma. I checked on Google Earth and found the pre-prepared firing locations for the SA-2, SA-6 and SA-3 systems; last media reports I heard there was only an SA-2 battery still shifting position between the prepared sites, but with ISIS able to threaten the airbase itself I was wondering if that SA-2 battery can still afford to stay set-up in the more distant prepared sites. Think they're still flying LA-39s out of there. It's also known as T4.

From the looks of it Assad wants to link up with his Iraqi/Shia allies through the Al Quim boarder crossing. Seems like the US led FSA is going to keep pushing up the border and try to take it over before Assad can secure a supply line through Deirezzor, without which he can't make any sort of siege on Al Quim.

I imagine they will do the same shit they did at the Al Walid boarder and set up NATO forces there to "protect innocent lives".

Seems like their short term goal right now is to cut off Assad from any outside support while they work on their new Israel Saudi coalition which will eventually be used to clean him up.

I predict that once ISIS becomes weak enough the FSA/SDF will begin assaulting Russian installments in the region, while the new Israel Saudi coalition begins wide spread "Assad must go" offensive assaults. The end result will be a dead Assad, an ousted Russia, and a federalized Syria with democratic elections. Turkey will also get to 'Golan Heights' a portion of Syria.

The only reason why SAA can't reach and take al-Tanf is because there are "coalition" (burgers) forces there and that means the burgers can (according to their flawed logic) bomb anyone that comes close and that includes the syrian army.
The FSA in that region is a non-issue for the SAA since they are less than a thousand men and will retreat to al-Tanf if they need to.

I'm not talking about FSA in all of Syria, just around al-Tanf and in the Badiyah region.

Now here's the thing: There are rumours that the Russians will help the SAA to approach al-Tanf by including their ground troops in SAA formations and provide air support to deterr the burger airstrikes. It's a complex situation and it could very well lead to WW3 if both the burgers and russians decide to achieve their goals.

I don't see Russian forces being directly involved in the strike though. It would be insane for Russians to openly attack NATO forces. That can be pretty expensive, though, especially with the sheer mass of supplies a modern military force requires. I'd expect them to seek a land or sea route at the earliest opportunity.

Tunnels sure they work there. but in reality a bomb that big is exponentially less effective pound for pound than a bomb half it's weight - ie a bomb half the moabs size would do more than half of the damage of a moab. big explosions tend to inefficient explosions.

ja, that is the one place they can do good work. the fuel air mix can also be driven into the tunnel network to maximise the 'reach' of the explosive effect in tunnels and stuff. but a bomb half it's size would still do more than half the damage, maybe only 10% less damage. moab is biggus dickus syndrome abetted with taxpayers money. it's not smart money that buys a moab.

We literally ran out of them. Shit you not, we were just working our way through the old Vietnam stockpiles. When we sat down to make a new firecracker, we realized our existing bunker-busting PGMs could handle most smaller targets, and stuff moderately larger we could handle with ground-teams (or even CAS/choppers) firing thermobarics at the entrance portals, so the only real application left was for collapsing entire massive tunnel networks in one go. Hence, the MOAB.
