This is something which has gotten on my nerves for awhile now, but I've just recently been able to define it better in my mind.
I started watching the adaptation of, "American Gods," awhile ago (call me a degenerate cuck later; I honestly don't give a fuck), and there's a scene that shows Norse explorers land in North America. Almost immediately one of them gets killed by a bunch of indigenous people. That's when it hit me:
I've noticed several movies like, "Valhalla Rising," and, "Pathfinder," where the Norse explorers are portrayed as being weak and defenseless to the North American natives or cruel and barbarous.
I'm the last person on /pol/ who you'll see with touting conspiracy theories; I'm not even of Norse descent, but this thing really, seriously pisses me off.
We don't hear a single goddamn thing about Columbus and his actual bellicosity, but once the Vikings are involved they have to be complete fodder, falling victim to the Natural Might of the Great Native American or a reiteration of the tired out hurrdurr vikigns r evul rapers adn aslo have horned helmets lolol.
I can't help but think that the Norse in these situations are just a white guilt stand-in.
I want to see one movie where the Norse explorers are presented in at the very least, a neutral light as explorers with the mentality of the era.
