I'm trying to get more colour and story in my street photos. I'm not sure if I've got that here, but I was on the fence enough to edit it and put time into making it pleasing (to me).

Fair point, but I had no intention of that though. I didn't get closer, or crop tighter out of fear or timidness or shyness, this was the exact framing I wanted.
Getting closer would have removed the light bouncing off the lamp post, the lamps and their light, and pretty much everything else, especially the colours.
But, if all of those other things that I notice/want don't seem to come across in the photo, then perhaps it's just shit (which is v possible).

I live downtown and work stupid hours so I just use London Drugs 9/10 times for convenience.
Kerrisdale Cameras does it cheap, I think last time I was there 35mm c41 was only $5, so I've been meaning to do that more. The Lab I think is supposed to be the best spot if their hours work for you, everybody else just sends their 120 stuff out to them so I know they must be reliable. Lens & Shutter charged like $14 for a roll of E6 120 so fuck that shit.

The thing is, why specifically that moment? Indeed there is a woman sitting on a bench looking at her phone in that moment. But we all see that same scene on a daily basis. There is nothing for us to think about when we look at these pictures. Which leaves us wondering why the photographer took the picture. What if she had a visible expression on her face? Like laughter, or maybe distraught by whatever she's reading? That would be interesting. Or maybe something spectacular is happening close by but she's oblivious to it because she's on her phone? Even better. You see what I'm getting at? Photography is about capturing a moment, but you need to find the moments that are worth capturing.

IMO an image can be good in two ways. Either the subject is interesting, or it's technically good.
A boring picture of something ordinary can still be pleasant to look at, if it's executed well. I think >>3121256 >>3121159 are good examples of that.
Then there's interesting subjects with poor technique. >>3118105 is a pretty bad example of this, since the subject isn't super interesting and the execution isn't that bad. But I think you get my point. It could have been a great shot, now it's just fine.
The sweet spot is of course when you nail both these aspects in the same image. That's what separates a great photographer from us others. They will always take the technically perfect image, so now they just have to find an interesting subject.

Try putting something unique (an item, something colorful, something that will stand out) at either of the corners of the square in the middle
I'd advise to take pictures with color because usually making impressive or unique picture in Black and White is pretty difficult + color can be another tool for you to mess around with and create somthing special

Thanks! The cactus was on a windowsill, and I took the picture long after sunset with a ringflash, so I think the blacks came out that rich since it's a straight shot into the night, which helps maximize attention to the flower and the out-of-focus thorns against basically lightless space.
