Last thread died early and the number of random single gear related threads increased a lot, so opening a new one. Hopefully, it will be more visible for the newly masses.

Anything about lenses, cameras, mounts, systems, buying, pricing, selling, etc. GOES IN HERE!

Do not open new threads for gear-related issues.

I fucking hate the nikon 18-55 kit lens. Thinking about the tamron 17-55 VC whateverthefuck as a replacement. Thoughts?
>>
>>3062370
Why the hate? It's a great kit lens

You got the 35mm 1.8 dx? If not get that before anything else
>>
>>3062370
You mean the 17-50/2.8 VC? It is an excellent lens, you will love it.
>>
>>3062370
>>3062385
depends if you want to turn the rings which way, you can get tampon or smegma.
>>
>>3062393
Sigma has a tiny plastic pin inside that is prone to break for no reason, so the Tamron is the better choice. Optically both are excellent.
>>
>>3062326
So pretty much zero sub-$200 options for anything that can beat out a phone lens?
>>
>>3062375
But what's the point if I'm getting the 17-55 2.8?
>>
>>3062408
There is no Tamron 17-55, only the 17-50/2.8
You must've seen a mistyped ad
Anyways, it is better than the kit lens in every regard, you will love it.

I would go for the cheapest adapter from aliexpress or ebay if possible. These things are just metal barrel, there is no electronics or any expensive things.

Hey guys, ive been slowly getting into photography over the past few years, each year moving my gear up slightly. I'm ready to buy a DSLR now but im unsure what would be the best, although im quite interested in the Pentax K-70.

I'm looking for a camera with:
-a large number of good quality and good value lenses.
-easy to use operating system and buttons
-under $800

I'm torn between the Batis 85 F1,8 and the Sony 85 F1,8.

On one hand Batis has perfect Chromatic Ab. control and optic stabilisation, on the other hand the Sony is half the price.
Fuck. Why must it be this way. I wish the Sony was just perfect optics and for cheap.
>>
>>3062533
also apologies if this is the wrong thread to post this in
>>
>>3062533
>a large number of good quality and good value lenses
You won't find those in the pentax camp.

-> Canon
>>
>>3062533
You only need 3-4 good lenses, Pentax certainly has them.
Something like the DA 15 Limited, DA 20-40 Limited and DA 70 limited would cover most necessary focal lengths, maybe the new 55-300 PLM if you want some telephoto fun as well.
Cheap alternative to the limiteds is the DA 16-85 WR, weather sealed, excellent IQ, not as fast but covers all that focal range but the Limited lenses have a certain IQ, giving the best contrast, color saturation, and sharpness.
The K-70 is currently the best value and most features per dollar camera out there, the pixel-shift would really benefit from the Limited primes but the 16-85 has enough sharpness as well.

Look around here:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/
and here:

to get a good idea of useful lenses.

OSS does not matter unless for handheld video. Personally I'd get the Sony

Try the Sony (or both). If you still want the Zeiss, get the Zeiss. Don't force yourself to settle for something you'll end up upgrading from in 4 months because you're not satisfied.
>>
>>3062554
Good point, and I also have the feeling I will eventually upgrade to a camera that has sensor stabilised. I'm going to try for the Sony first (I probably won't notice some of the CA it it said to have).
>>
>>3062533
I'm stuck between the Pentax K-70 and the Nikon 5300. They're about the same price I believe, I'm leaning towards Pentax because of image stabilization.
>>
>>3062569
>5300
The Canon 80D has better AF than this. Lenses are cheaper and better.
>>
>>3062569
One has a bright big pentaprism OVF, the other has a small dark pentamirror OVF. One has weather sealing, the other is not. One is chock full of pro-level features, the other has gimped features with a Nikon badge.
With the D5x00 series, you practically pay an extra for a "5" and a Nikon badge while you are left with a D3x00 feature set.
Canon and Nikon are very conservative on their entry line.

It's a steal, as long as you won't be moving the AF point around too much. It has the older 9ish point system, so you proably won't.

It's a great camera, just don't expect to be shooting in complete darkness or anything.
>>
I've been looking into the Sony a7 for a while, but I'm suspicious of it. It's dirt cheap for full frame (which is a giant plus for me), but apparently, it has no stabilization (I want it for both photo and video), nearly all reviews I've found on it contradict each other and virtually no lenses fit into it, or maybe they do, it's really confusing that Sony has more than 1 type of E-mount,and basically, it kinda pales in comparison to the a6500, which is more expensive, has an ASP-C, but shoots 4K and does have stabilization. So, is the a7 actually worth it or is the a6500 better? The internet so far has given me little to no clear answer
>>
>>3062843

Depending on how cheap, the a7 is worth it.

The af sucks on it, and it has no stabalization, but it can adapt pretty much any lens ever made and it has a pretty nice sensor.

If you want a nice body with a ff sensor you can slap an old manual lens on and have fun with, it is perfect.

If you want a body with fast autofocus and stabalization, youd be better off with a7ii or a6500.

>>3062843
If you're doing photography and image quality, sharpness, low light noise and bokeh are important to you, get the a7.

If this is going to only be a video camera, the a6500 makes more sense.

The a7ii does it all.

You will get more clients with the a7, people love bokeh.

And there's only one type of e mount, but just like nikon, canon and bentax, some lenses don't cover full frame, but they all fit on the same mount and all work on all bodies. Don't worry too much about this, the crop camera market has fallen through it's own arsehole and will only be for video within the next 5 years. This means all those crop lenses with autofocus will soon be worth next to nothing, makes no sense to buy anything other than full frame lenses unless you can accept the lack of resale value.
>>
>>3062917

Why?

Just get an a7ii and an LA-EA4.

I've purchased this recently and have been really enjoying it.
Fast and sharp. Decent low-light performance.

Hi fellas! I have a Canon eso 5D Mark II and a Yashica 50mm f/1.4 lens which is extremly sharp but I have encountered a problem. When I focus at 3m (10 ft) and above, the back of the lens will hit the mirror in the camera and since I dont want the lens to break the mirror (shutter) I don't know what to do.

I have tried solved it by using google and even youubt, but the tricks that I've read do not work on my lens since it still will hit the mirror. And this means that I can only focus on things that hare 0,6m to about 2,5 meters away and it kinds sucks. So.. /p/ what should I do? I already have an m42-adapter but it wont fix my problems with focusing on subjects that are 3meters and above.

Also cover full frame at f4 or wider. I leave mine on my f100 with a ND to cut light.
>>

How about getting a lens that is actually made to be used on your camera? There's no other way to "fix" your situation. Get a used sigma 50mm f/1.4 or something similar.

Overpriced, soft wide open, slow af, soft corners even stopped down, weak bokeh and bad CA.

>>
>>3063245
The Sigma is the better lens for A6500, because it has ibis.
But the Sony 35 is better for A6000 and A6300 because it has OSS.

I'm not sure it's able to replace your kit lens though. It's a 53mm equivalent lens on APS-C, you might find it to be too narrow indoors.

Do you have some examples? Most reviewers that compared both tend to prefer the sony, less AF hunting, better at low light due to OSS and a lot more compact.

That 13mm lens barely covers the Pentax Q sensor, it will certainly be a tiny circle on your Sony. With an adapter you can't just increase the image circle.
Your best bet would be getting a cheap used Pentax Q and adapt the lens on that.

Wise /p/eople, i want to buy an a6500 online and looked around for a good prize. in my country, it currently runs at 1555€ on amazon. if i look on ebay, i can find new ones for 1259€. the offers seem legit, but only offer seller warranty. my guess is that they buy them in bulk from china so no sony warranty in europe.

is buying there a good idea? do i have to expect lower quality for some reason? thanks in advance.

Check your local laws, in the uk we have the consumer rights act, this means any electronic item sold as new by a business must come with a minimum 2 year warranty supported by the retailer.

If it's buy it now and new, it's counted as a business seller on ebay.

I bought a monitor on ebay usa, from korea, posted to the uk, it got a few dead pixels after nearly 2 years of use, seller refused to help so I took ebay uk to court and won the full price of the monitor.

Consumer rights are fab.

I bought a Sony a7r because the price was good, I paid about 10% under local market rate. I am starting to wonder if I should just sell it and get an A6000.

A6000 auto focus is better and faster.

A7r full frame doesn't do me much good because I am just posting photos on Instagram and sending them to friends on what's app. I'd like to be doing more, like printing them, but my photos aren't good enough yet.

Is there anything the a7r does better, besides more megapixels? Low light performance should be better because full frame, but auto focus sucks in low light.

Tripod isn't really an option sadly, as I tend to mountaineer, and that's an environment where shaving off a hundred grams is an issue worth serious contemplation - ie. it may be worth getting the f4 for the simple fact that it's slightly smaller and lighter than the f2.8 III - let alone dragging along a >1kg tripod. We're talking >5000m above sea level here, day marches of up to 12 hours, and potentially harsh conditions.

Your input is much appreciated though, gives me something to work with and sort it all out for myself. More advice always welcome.

I'm currently in a tough spot. For a while after looking at wide angle primes, I had decided on the Nikon 24mm F/1.8 since it was a great price. Today, upon doing more research, I came across the Sigma 24-35 F/2 ART.

The Sigma grabbed my attention since I'd have the option of zoom between those two focal lengths, possibly eliminating the need for a 24mm prime and 35mm prime, and the fact that it's F/2 is pretty solid as it's not so far from 1.8.

I'm curious to hear opinions from people who have used both lenses on full frame, and if the Sigma is worth it for what it can do, IQ, etc

I regularly take hikes in the nearby mountains and forests with my not-at-all compact 190XB tripod and 498 head (close to 3kg together) attached to my bag full of camera, couple zooms (standard and 70-200/2.8+TC), extra clothes, food, water, and other hiking stuff.
You will end up kicking yourself watching an excellent vista and no tripod to take advantage of. It happened to me and since I only have my normal tripod I carry that regardless if I end up using it or not.
The f/4 lens if an option is a good idea for lightening your gear, but getting a good travel tripod is more beneficial than the weight you would save. A couple of CPL, ND and grad filters would be even better with a tripod.
From now on you have to not only focus on hiking but also how and what to photograph, it will change the way you think and the way you prepare for a hike. Carrying a camera will change how you travel.

Look, the camera matters less than you might think. Its why you see great pictures being taken with all sorts of shitty cameras. But if you must, any cheap f to ef adapter ring will work, yes even the $3 ones.
There is no way to make it autofocus though.
Long, sharp lenses like a 100mm macro are easy as hell to focus manually even through the viewfinder, but if you're on a tripod, use Live View.
>>
>>3064082
I had one for about a year. I'd say the biggest thing to consider is that you will live with Fuji primes on that camera because the EVF is so awful you will not want to fuck with zooms or adapted manual focus lenses.

For me, that meant I basically stuck with the 18mm (not great) or the 23mm and 35mm primes (both great). After a little while I realized there was no need for that since the X100S was the same camera internally, could hit the same focal lengths with the converters, and was much smaller for everyday carrying.

I mean, your mileage may vary, but I haven't regretted selling mine for the X100S. If you want to adapt old lenses it might be better to look at Sony since the adapters seem to work better with that system -- you just lose out on intuitive menus and a nicer form factor.

The FE kit lens for the A7series is pretty good actually. Good and lightweight for beginners who don't know which focal length they want yet.

The 28-70 is an exceptionally sharp kit lens, though the AF isn't anything special, and it doesn't have a particularly wide max aperture.

The 50mm f 1.8 FF is to be avoided atcall costs. Optically it is fine (except some minor CA), but it has a terrible, terrible autofocus. It is slow, and loud as fuck. Go for the FE 55mm F1.8 Z. Well worth the price, one of the best ~50mm lenses ever made.

Honestly, the only FF lens to avoid is the 50mm.

But the other anon is right, use the kit for awhile until you find your favorite focal length.

Also, I personally recomend the SEL35F28Z. My favorite lens.

I've no need for for 15-23mm though, I recently tested an 18-35G and noticed I found myself shooting between 24 and 35 for the most part.

I feel your pain. I'm on APS-C and looking for upgrade for a WR standard-ish zoom.
My options are 16-85mm and 20-40mm, and I mostly shoot between 20mm and 30mm. But, the 20-40 costs double of the 16-85 and to top it off the 16-85 is a huge massive lens while the 20-40 is a compact zoom with full metal finish.
Currently can only afford the 16-85, used, barely. Existence is pain...

Been hiking with camera equipment for 4 years (initially an Olympus E-PL3, but quite similar to yours nowadays) and I'd consider a tripod if I weren't generally the designated pack mule already. There's been hikes where I carried almost twice what the others carried, and I simply have to cut down on weight where possible. I wouldn't mind carrying a tripod for one or two days, but lugging it around while carrying a full pack and covering anywhere between 500-2000 altitude meters a day for 5-10 days is more than I am willing to put up with. Even if I eat like mad, I lose up to 0.5kg a day already.

Will get a tripod at some point - you did give me the final push I needed on that one - but only for short hikes or designated shooting day trips.
>>
>>3064275
At least get a bean bag, or just the bag you can fill with pebbles, dirt or something on site.
You can use a treebranch, a rock, a stump, your friend as a tripod with it.

>>
>>3064297
Yep, I use a Lowepro flipside as well if I don't need to bring much other than camera stuff or I go with a car.
I use a knockoff NatGeo Walkabout if I have to pack more travel stuff and less camera (two lenses plus accessories, filters etc...).
I have an old Czechoslovakian military canvas bag if I need to pack for a long hike and I usually bring only one zoom on my camera, some filters and the tripod. The tripod goes on all the bags because too many times I missed great scenes being too lazy to pack the tripod.

Owned and used several packs, but by far the best was the Millet Peuterey 35+10. 45+10 exists as well. Quite specialized mountaineering pack, but it's so goddamn comfy. Can haul >20kg uphill all day with this thing.

In the end much of it is still personal prefence, so always test a pack first. Load up, adjust from the bottom up, see how it feels, buy pack that best combines utility, comfyness and price.

I have had mine for a few years. It has been all through South America and through India from Delhi down to Kerala. I only use two lenses with it (I only own two) the Canon 50mm 1.4 and a Tokina 11-16.

It has served me well. My biggest complaint that is that as soon as you start turning up the iso the pictures get noisy as hell. Unfortunately I tend to like shooting when there is shit light so I just have learned to deal with it.

For that price I would DEFINITELY get it.

I would go for the prime rather than the zoom, but that is a personal preference towards primes in general.

I generally prefer primes as well, and I know that when there's big gaps between the starting focal point and ending focal point, you're always sacrificing quality. That's one of the reasons I considered this since it's only an 11 mm difference between start and end.

Thanks for your input.

Planning on going travelling in the next few months, asked some time last year for some recommendations but asking again incase recs change.

I want a good mirrorless for taking pics or film(?). Something good for beginners. Last time I was here I was recommended the Sony a6000 I think, is this still a valid choice or not and where would I get one or the recommended one for cheaper or a decent price with these "kits" I'm told of that come with lenses etc.
>>
>>3065097
Get a used DSLR and a standard prime, like a D3300 and AF-S 35/1.8G or K-S2 and DA 35/2.4 instead.
>>
What would be the smallest/most compact mirrorless body + lens combination? I'm looking through Canon's lenses can I don't see any pancake lenses for mirrorless cameras. I mean I guess you could use an adapter kit, but the extra inches of the adapter kinda defeats the purpose.
>>
>>3065104
May I ask why you'd recommend that over an a6000 ? it was shilled so hard to me, just curious.
>>
>>3065131
Because the Sony system has no affordable standard primes for APS-C and you would spend a lot more even though the body is cheap. Also the battery life is much worse than on DSLRs. I bet you could go on a week with one charge on a DSLR while you would have to charge at least once every day with mirrorless. EVFs eat up most of the charge while the OVF of the DSLR needs no power. The only thing that needs power on a DSLR is the meter until you expose, while on mirrorless the EVF and the sensor is constantly working.
You want battery life on travel, not to look for a place to charge your camera every stop.
The A6000 is fine if you already know what you are doing, as a beginner I still recommend an entry DSLR. Also the Nikon and Pentax kit lens are much better than the Sony kit lens that comes with the A6000.
>>
>>3065164
Forgot Canon. Canon kit lens are much better than the Sony kit lens, and that is saying a lot about Sony. Even a used 600D with kit lens is better than the A6000 for a beginner on travel.
>>
I am planning on getting my first interchangeable lens camera. Mostly for macro stuff (insects / plants / circuit boards), and some outdoors photography.

I was considering between the Olympus E-M10 II and the Fujifilm X-T20. Someone give me advice?
>>
>>3065164
Fair enough. A lot of foreign terms but I get the gist in terms of useability and beginner friendly. In terms of features and best for the price range for beginners should I most likely go for the d3300?

Any sites where I can get em used
>>
>>3065241
Any entry level camera produced in the last few years are comparable in performance and can produce stunning photos. The D3300 specifically is recommended over the latest D3400 because the D3400 has added a few features that are best disabled at first power on and never to be touched again, otherwise it is the same camera. Also buying used is always recommended here over buying new.
The Pentax K-S2 and the Canon 600D are also recommended, all these entry cameras are solid performers. See if you like a particular lens system, or if you have any others close (family, friends) with a system camera and get into that system. Chances are you will be able to borrow a few lenses.
Starting with the kit lens is always recommended, a cheap normal prime (24-35mm on APS-C sensors) is next and you will see which focal length you need or use the most, that will be the way to go further.
Read Understanding Exposure from Bryan Peterson, look up tutorials on exposure triangle and composition on YT, Shoot in RAW and look up basic tutorials on processing RAW files on YT as well.
KEH, B&H and SRS Microsystems are a good way to start looking.
>>
>>3065257

I've got the f1.4, it's glorious. Apparently the f2 is soft at close focus, but it is much faster focusing than the old f1.4... There are tradeoffs for both. F1.4 is also quite large and heavy, it won't balance well with the smaller bodies. So if you want small and light, don't care much about close subjects and want blazing fast af, get the f2. If iq is essential get the f1.4.

About to buy this used Ricoh gr for 300 bucks. Is this a good price considering the body damage in pic related? I already have an a6000 so I'm worried that this will be a useless buy in a sense. I can't get wide enough shots with my sony because of the focal length with my lenses. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
>>
>>3065770
It's either that or the Sony 20mm, which costs a bit more than the GR. That ricoh is beaten up pretty badly at least. See if you can get shots of the lens and/or sample pics taken to see if there is dust. I'd probably get the GR if I was you.
>>
>>3065771
No scratches on the lens according to the seller, just body damage and microscopic scratches on the LCD. I think I'm gonna go for it because I'm sure it'll be nicer than the Sony with the 20mm lens.

23mm and 35mm lenses of the same series have a 43mm filter thread. Essentially Fuji was making their own version of Leica's Summicron series but now messed it up by putting a different filter thread on this new lens. That means that you have to buy new filters and carry duplicates.

>>3065890
Oh, you still use screw on filters? Why not get a cheap used pack of Cokin A filters and holder and a couple of adapter rings like anyone else does?
>>
>>3065892
I already use a mix of Cokin Z and Lee with my Nikon. I was considering buying Fuji as my second camera system, kind of a compact travel kit, but there are lots of details that annoy me. For example those three lenses could have been a perfect package but Fuji made a design error. Screw-on filters are small, so they would be better for this setup but I'd have to buy two of everything. Polarizer, a couple of NDs and maybe some fourth one would have been all I need but I don't like idea of buying and carrying six or eight filter instead of three or four.

I still use my D80 I bought 2008. Lower the exposure to -0.7 or -0.3 since it overexposes. It also has a built-in Commander mode for Nikon flashes like sb 600, sb 800, etc. It can have grainy photos with certain lenses.
>>
>>3064860
Another option is use your camera phone and buy a portable printer (just a bit bigger than your phone), I'm not sure but kodak printer has the ink and paper that won't smudge with water compared to other portable printers (polaroid, lg, fuji instax 2, etc).
>>
>>3066045
What lenses should I avoid? I was thinking about buying a tamron 28-80 3.5-5.6, I can find it very cheap
>>
>>3066095
the grainy photos are a result of very sharp lens, just a characteristic, not an issue. (ex. when used with tokina 11-16 2.8)

check the reviews, they say tamron 28-80 is sharp, but the aperture is the same as a regular kit lens (3.5-5.6).

also try checking out for a nikon 50 1.8, very cheap used, (75 full frame equivalent), a bit tight for indoor use but tact sharp and is a prime lens. can have a nervous bokeh in certain situations but not that much. if I'm looking for just one budget lens, this is the one I'll get for my needs as a walkaround lens.

but if you want a zoom lens as you stated above for flexibility, then get a zoom. but fast primes have that nice sharpness and bokeh.
