Why with my Minolta X-7A does shot 1 or 2 get messed up but then doesn't happen throughout the entirety of the roll? I've had the camera for nearly 2 years and haven't ever had any issues. It's in near mint condition. Any help would be great.

Also, I've checked the shutter speeds and it seems to be firing correctly. Maybe it's something with the electronics or the way I'm loading the film? That still wouldn't explain why the first shot or two come out fine. Also, batteries are brand new.

The half shot would be due to too high shutter speed for flash use or an occasional sticky shutter, however your Xe-7 is a vertical shutter which would dictate vertical underexposure if this was the case.

It's just broken, how may times do you need to hear it?
The first shutter curtain is getting snagged, or dragged on, or something is slowing it down as it traverses the film gate, and the second curtain is catching it.
The most likely explaination is that you're just maxing out the shutterspeeds by selecting too wide an aperture in auto mode.
Many auto-exposure cameras will simply fire the shutter faster than it's capable of reliably working at, because nothing actually "goes faster" in the camera, it just releases the curtains with a smaller time lag between them.
If you go over the "max shutter speed", you're just sailing closer and closer to the engineered tolerances keeping curtain A and curtain B traveling at a relatively similar speed.
It probably only happens at the start of a roll because it gets darker as the day progresses.
Avoid going over the highest marked shutter speeds and you won't have a problem.

picked up a petri 7s rangefinder from a fleamarket today for 15 dollarydoodoos and noticed it has a cold shoe/acc mount instead of a hotshoe.
From what I can tell it has a flash port on the barrel, or I assume that's what it is, I'm pretty new to vintage cameras.

I've also got one of those, the f/2.8 version. It's charming as all hell. Be gentle with the winding lever, it's brass clockworks inside (hence the weight). The lens sounds like some kind of a Tessar variant, 4 elements 3 groups, but the bokeh isn't so vomit-inducing as on a m39 Industar. There's a good article on this camera on Photoethnography, if you can get past the nineties girl on the Internet thing.

One nice thing is that the selenium cells (keep the lens cap on in storage!) are behind the filter screw so no need to adjust exposure manually. IIRC the size is 49 mm so interchangeable with Olympus OM lenses and adapters.

For flash, you have to select between X and bulb-flash modes; in the latter it delays opening the shutter until like 30 ms (or some such) it takes for the olde-schoole single use bulb to actually pop.

I wouldn't say loose, but there's definitely a bit of play on the focusing ring. RF patch stays stable though, so I'm assuming it's just a bit loose in the controls. Haven't had light leaks on mine. The lens flares like a motherfucker though, put a hood on it or heavily avoid shooting into the light.

Only damage on mine is that the frame counter doesn't move backward, so it's basically always stuck at E. Doesn't matter in practice.

Anyway, X mode should work with most electronic flashes using the PC cord socket you'll find on the lens barrel. Syncs at any speed (I think, could be just 1/125 and slower).

Seems to be a pretty common way for Minolta shutters to fail. It might only be the faster shutter speeds that do it in which case you can still sort of use the camera.
Or you can do what I did with mine and shoot the busted shutter speed on purpose, then reverse the film in the darkroom and shoot it again, exposing the other half of each frame this time as redscale. Remember to hold the camera upside down since you turned the film that way when you reversed it.

Probably shouldn't use paper as a diffuser since the fibres of it come through in the scan.

I have a chance to buy a Nikon F5 and 35-105mm AF lens for $150. Should I do it? The F5 isn't in the best condition, its missing some of the front rubber and has a few scratches, but looks as if it functions perfectly.

Nah, get a proper F5 with all the rubber intact for $200. It's about what the camera is worth if all the wheels work 100%, the LCDs aren't knackered, and there's not too much garbage in the finder.

Get a fistful of Eneloops as well. You always want to have a full set with you when shooting a F5, and hope you don't need 'em.

Got this P&S for about 2$ at a local photo store with all of this included, the guy who sold me even threw a used but not depleted CR123 battery so i can test it. Anyone tried pentax P&S?

Basically, the film sits on the scanner with a sheet of plain paper on top as a diffuser. The 2 boxes (cards inside to give them some weight) hold the paper down and keep the film somewhat flat while keeping the light raised. The light is just 2 rows of white led strip stuck to a thin strip of mdf.

How does everyone keep their negatives flat when scanning with a digital camera?

Make sure they dry flat when you dev them. If they're still curly after they're dry, reel the whole uncut roll back onto the paterson reel the opposite way you developed it (so if you dev'd emulsion side in, put it back on the reel emulsion side out), and then wet the film and then leave it to dry in the Paterson reel. That usually cancels out the bend.

If a lab is developing your film and they come back curly, just lay the film between two pieces of glass when you scan it. Won't get much flatter than that

I took my film camera out for a walk and ended up taking NO pictures. Shooting film makes me so intensely selective about what I shoot. Everytime I look at something I thought I was gonna shoot, I think, fuck it I'm not even gonna bother scanning this snapshit, why bother.

My guess, is that you draw a little over the RF patch on the front window. This will increase contrast and make it easier to see when stuff overlap in it.

You could also use some semi transparent tape and draw on that instead.

Get a GSW690 instead. I had the GA645 wide 60 for a while, sold it, got a GSW690 instead.

It's about twice the size, but it fits together with light meter, film and some filters in a small 35mm bag that I use.

With Film every shot counts, literal money, the limitation of number of shots i can take make it so that my brain actively searches for something interesting as the limitation to one focal lenght with the lens does as well.

Finally to me the wait to see the results with developping film is probably the biggest thrill, in a world in our age where everything needs to run and be immediate, analog photography reteaches you to take your time.

From what Ive seen Mamiya 67s are pretty good. I think they have removable film mags too. Always a big plus and advantage of MF

my second roll developed at home
hanged it in the bathroom to dry then fell and got bunch of dust/debris on the film
also used a clothespin and a quarter to prevent the film from curling and part of the quarter got embedded on the left part of the image lol

long ago, i had a few rolls of film some I exposed some I didnt. now, when I reeled a film into the camera, it rewinded it back into the canister.I can't tell which roll is which, and both rolls are reeled back into the canister. Can i check this without dev'ing it or go to a darkroom?

So, khm, since this is film related problem I'll post it here.
I have Pentax P30t and recently I've finished first film with this camera. So after the last shot was done I've cocked the wind lever almost to the end but since it was the end of the film nothing had happened, and I wasn't able to pull the shutter release button. Then I pressed the release button at the bottom of the camera, rewinded it and pulled film out, but this release button has stucked and wind lever started to work oddlly - it moves to the end but does not advance anything, it just moves freely without any resistance. I've fixed (?) the release button by manually advancing take-up spool, but after that sprocket spull goes locked and that's all. I've tried new batteries but it was useless, and now I have no idea what to do. Any thoughts how to fix it?

You can unreel them that way, yes, but you still have no way to tell which one you already shot.
Either develop both of them and accept that you wasted a roll of film and developing cost for it or shoot them both and get a roll of double exposures. Might be good.

Sorry, I missed part of your post.
I don't know a good replacement for a piece of film for that technique. You can use the bit that sticks out of a fresh roll if you're careful, though.

I feel like I should post a pic when I post so here's one. It's 35 mm. HP5 shot in my GW690ii
I just wanted to see if I could. It was actually more of a bother than I expected since the shutter won't fire unless the camera thinks there's a roll of 120 film in it. I spooled a strip of 35 mm. film with the backing paper from a 120 roll in the darkroom so the paper would fool the camera. Kind of a hassle.

I've also shot 35mm in my GW690ii, but instead of fucking around with 120 paper I just jammed some toilet paper in there so the 35mm film put enough pressure on the reel to count up shots.
The trickiest part for me was making the take up spool to make it go on straight.

With a 3D-printed take up spool I imagine it would be quite simple. Would probably be a lot nicer in a GSW of course, 90mm is quite narrow for panos.

I think that if I put a little care into it I'd have a fairly easy time of getting the film straight using the backing paper method.
It's not really worth the bother either way. It just seemed like something you have to do once when you get your first MF camera.
In the end it's less bother to just shoot 120 film and the money I might save by shooting 35 mm is peanuts.

I have some 16 mm. Tri-X which I guess I could also load for some even more ridiculous aspect ratios.

Also, a frame of Instax fits PERFECTLY in this camera. I want to play around with that a bit later and see how Instax handles long exposures.

I'd imagine the reciprocity failure is dreadful if it's anything like FP-100C and FP-3000B.
I was going to load up my 4x5 pinhole with FP-100C, and in early afternoon lighting, accounting for reciprocity, the light meter gave me a 20 hour exposure for what would have been around 30 seconds on Acros.

The rangefinder is good but the contrast patch can be a bit light and sometimes you'll need a hard line to get the focus bang on but it's nothing too bad. I've just cut a small square of a stickpad note coloured black and put it on the RF window for more contrast.

Minolta fag here. Sorry I missed your earlier posts. Regardless of which body you choose to replace your X-7A with, you have to understand the "newest" Minolta mf bodies are a minimum of 20 years old. All bodies made from the 1980's on are filled with plastic, and plastic deteriorates over time. The sr-T 101,102,201,202,303 were all metal and held up better, but they are heavy, use a mercury battery, and don't meter quite as good as the newer bodies with silicon meters. The XD series from the late 1970's was probably the best bodies they ever made. All metal, vertical run-metal shutter, compact, modern meter, normal battery, aperture AND shutter priority modes, 1/90th x-sync. From the x-series, I'd rate the 570 as the best of the 3 due to the way shutter info is presented in the viewfinder. But again, the x-series is all plastic gears inside. You buy one, hope it works, if it doesn't, you make a shelf ornament out of it.

My personal opinion: find an XD-11 (XD-7 in Europe), assume you will have to have it CLA'd (which costs $50-$100 in the states). Once you hold a newly CLA'd XD-11 in your hands, you will never want to pick up any other body. I guarantee it!

Used to do a lot of digital photography, but I haven't touched an SLR in years. Just bought a used Pentax K1000 with 50mm F2.0 lens. What color film is best for beginners? I can't develop anything on my own (yet), so B&W shooting seems a ways off.

As far as B&W shooting goes though, is TRI-X 400 a good choice?

Kodacolor film is just fine.
If you can only process c41 you should use the Ilford XP2 film, black and white but you can dev it like color film.

In Europe is branded as "Kodak Color Plus"
Basically it's a kinda shitty film if poorly developed.

Otherwise you should buy Fujicolor C200 film, it's really cheap but it's a little bit better than the Color Plus.
Both in Italy can be bought for around 2,50 euros

I consider buying a 6x9 rangefinder to move up to medium format. I'm currently using a Fujica Compact Deluxe. Any recommendations?

A lot of these forums can offer much greater prices on expired film and full kits. I've payed far less than market price on several items, with savings over a thousand at this point.

With film, it's a lot of older guys who maybe feel more comfortable distributing their equipment to those they perceive as part of their in-group. Makes things a bit more personal sometimes, and the deals are juicy.

For film metering, is the Sekonic L-558 worth 300$ CAD used? I've seeing it go for up to 400-500$ CAD and don't know why there is such a wide price range. The DR models don't seem worth it to me.

No. It's not cheap, but it's certainly not very expensive either. Bronica lenses tend to be quite expensive. If you'd only have gotten one lens with it, I'd say you would have been bamboozled.

OM-10 is like any other entry level SLR from the time. You need a separate unit for manual speeds, otherwise it's auto only. No compensation dial is what killed it for me, you can only compensate by changing the ISO from the rather inconvenient dial. No auto exposure lock either. Can't really recommend it unless you're on a budget, you'll grow tired of its limitations quickly.

Relatively. You can get OM lenses for <30usd. Within the realm of second hand film lenses, Bronica lenses aee certainly not the cheapest. Saying they're not expensive because there are more expensive lenses is like saying a 10k lens is cheap because there are 100k lenses

Would like to have a compact 135 camera which has some more in it than some crappy point&shoot.
I would really like to just carry around a proper SLR but it gets bothersome, you can't always have it with you and you often get weird stares when shooting around people since it is so loud.

rate my shooting location, abandoned shipyard I found in my city. there were heroin addicts in a trashed out house next door and stolen cars and burnt out shit everywhere. very spooky.

first time using MF, slightly vexed I didn't have any colour film for it, i reckon the colours of the car would've been nice on colour. (FP4 loaded in currently). It's a bronica ertsi (6x4.5) btw

also, i don't know if it's just my opinion but P&S cameras seems to me pretty awesome for trying emulsions the first time.
As these don't have pretty much options and everything is mostly automated, much of the differences you can see between rolls are for sure be caused by the film election. Obviously, if you want to have more creative control of the emulsion you shoot it with a SLR.
