Switching a7r with otus's for pentax 645z is a good thing?
>>
>>3025481
I personally would much prefer the A7R II or 5DS R unless you really, really need MF.
>>
>>3025481
If doing stills, it's a big improvement, those mf are great for fashion or product. Expect huge files so more drive space is always welcome
>>
>>3025481
Bigger sensor means you get more resolution in the small details. Some guy who owns a 645Z and uses it to photograph paintings posted a comparison with the 5Ds R and while the MP is the same and the sensor size is not overly larger (it is a crop 645 format) there was very much visible difference in the details. The kind of difference where your money and business depends on.
Yes, I'd say it does worth it if you need the details that much, no matter how modern the FF sensor, physics, the Poisson distribution and diffraction will rob you of the detail on a smaller sensor.
>>
>>3025496
In addition, there is the Bayer-interpolation loss, artifacts caused by the color interpolation and diffraction and photonic+sensor readout noise will worsen it. The only alternatives are the Foveon sensors (very low QE) and the pixel shift resolution tech in the K-1, but you better find some very sharp lens to use it with. The latter doesn't work with moving subjects and the former doesn't work when you have to go above ISO 400.
>>
>>3025496
Ya, MF has the advantage in physics.

I still find it usually very hard to tell the difference between a FF camera with a high-end prime and a 645Z with a high-end prime. [Mostly, when you see a difference, someone used a lesser prime or zoom lens.]

https://www.flickr.com/groups/645z/pool/
https://www.flickr.com/groups/2805098@N23/pool/
https://www.flickr.com/groups/2844482@N21/pool/

Personally, I don't see MF as actually very much better until you get to like, a Phase One XF 100MP. That one does look very different
>>
>>3025506
Like the guy with the paintings said, the customers pay for the minuscule details, not for the fact you took a shot of their work. They can do the same with their iPhone but the smallest details, the imperfections in the paint and the brush strokes is what they want, same for fashion, product, landscape etc...
The FF simply cannot deliver them as easily as with MF since the lens sharpness becomes an increasingly difficult thing with minor increase in MP resolution.
This is the same problem on a larger scale as the ever present phone camera vs DSLR debates amongst the clueless internet masses.
The Flickr shots are downsampled and have a drastic JPEG compression. Of course, you don't see the difference.
>>
>>3025509
It's too close to call in most instances, even in a side-by-side comparison.

If you need maximum performance for your customers by specific requirements (which makes you very, very rare), there is just no way around getting XF 100MP.

They obviously won't accept the 645Z, a camera that "merely" looks like a A7R II or 5DS R.

> The Flickr shots are downsampled and have a drastic JPEG compression. Of course, you don't see the difference.
Show better comparisons then?

Only with really sharp prime lenses and the exact cameras in discussion, please - I don't care about nonsense involving some smartphones and DSLR.

Apart from that, it's surely technically possible that these real publications were somehow all equally bad due to compression, but what else are you going to use for a commercial publication?
It'll basically be JPEG, unless you are one of a handful of people who is hired to do photos for house sized plastic prints with a XF 100MP. [Which I'm just going to assume you are simply not.]
>>
Newfag here. I was thinking of buying a DMC-FZ70, but I figured I should ask you guys first.
What camera should I get for super awesome focus at 20-50 feet away where the object I'm photographing takes up most of the photo?
>>
>>3025532
At this point you made it clear you just want a new toy not a proper working tool.
It is pointless to try to explain the facts to you because you already set your mind, dear sonyautismo. Kindly fuck off.
>>
>>3025548
I'm asking for proof in comparative test shots or something, which you claimed was obvious.

You know, given that apparently the Flicker images that look just so damn comparable apparently still have to be ignored because of... JPEG.

Apparently there is no way you can do that for either of the cameras in question, huh...?
>>
>>3025552
So? I don't have the shots, ask the anon with the 645Z who made the comparisons in the first place.
Do your own damn research if you are not patient enough.
Also, you generally get passive aggressive even about your own discussions. Take few notches back, buddy. If you act the same way in real life, someone will bash your face in, in no time.
>>
Looking to get my first flash. Nothing fancy, just something cheap that can get the job done and can be used remotely.

Anything I need to watch out for/ be wary of or should I just grab something for $80 from a brand I recognise?
>>
>>3025564
> I insist on my claims being true but then defer to "obvious fact' and "do your own research" and "someone unnamed else made some unspecified conclusions, this backs me up" when asked for proof in the face of decent enough evidence pointing to a completely opposite conclusion.

> For good measure, I add some ad hominem completely unrelated to the discussion "you'd be punched IRL; that's how we cool kids deal with being wrong"
Seems like that's all we can get instead of some actual evidence supporting your stance.
>>
>>3025577
> Anything I need to watch out for/ be wary of
Well, you probably want to determine if you need TTL.

If you don't need TTL, I'll recommend the Yonguo YN660. It'll give you a very capable, very powerful manual flash with RF control built-in (can be used as master+slave both, the standalone 560-TX controller also is nice).

If you do need TTL, I'd suggest the Godox TT685II or V860II, but they cost a bit more than $80.

Both are usually best ordered directly from China if you want to save a few dollars.

I would advise against the built-in battery Godox. The recycle rate is faster sure, but that battery dies way too soon. For the entry cheapest Godox flash the TT600 is better, a pack of Eneloops will last long, you can easily change them and if you don't use full power than the recycle rate is still decent.
>>
>>3025585
> but that battery dies way too soon
The V860II's newer LiPo battery?

Never heard about that before, are you certain about that?

> The recycle rate is faster
And the capacity per weight is ~twice as big, plus the batteries are recharged faster and kinda more conveniently (honestly gets a bit old to unload and load 12 pieces of batteries eventually).

Arguably you can also get the recycle times, capacity and ease of charging with the optional external LiPo battery pack attached to a TT685II (something which the V860II doesn't even support), but these external packs are fairly expensive.

Are Pentacon M42 lenses worth buying if I can get a three-pack for under 100€? M42 adapters seem to be cheap as fuck too.
Seems like a fun toy.
Set includes f1.8 50mm, f2.8 135mm and f2.8 29mm
>>
>>3025647
Some of them do, some that were made by the Meyer Görlitz plant and the Zeiss Jena plant, rest of them is garbage.
Pentacon 50 is awesome, dreamy and desaturated, 135/2.8 "Bokehmonster" is great.
I had the misfortune to get a 29/2.8 which is absolutely grabage.
Consult MFlenses forums and vintage-camera-lenses.com

ebay. whatever the lowest price on ebay is, thats the lowest price you can expect to pay.

heh should have prefaced

I have an MD mount type camera and doing some shopping i saw they had adapters with and without a glass in them

(I'm quite new to this. plsnobulli)
>>
>>3025757
Forget it. Some extremely sharp close to normal focal length primes will give a decent image in a glass element adapter but not telephoto and definitely not zooms. The ones without glass elements will limit the use and will not give infinity focus. If shit is too far away it will be blurry no matter how far out you will focus.
Your best bet is getting a cheap Nikon SLR body and use the lens on that.

All my cameras are oldschool film nikon, mamiya etc. Have never owned/used a digital apart from my phone. Wife wants to get digital for family and birth type shooting. I am proposing the Fuji Xt1 with 2 primes to get her started. I am highly biased toward that old school ergonomics, though, so i would be grateful for any input from Fuji owners or those who know of similar cameras.
She won't ever be shooting video or sports or landscapes or low light, astro... none of that stuff matters. All I am conerned with is Image Quality when shooting people. The few image comparisons I have seen between the Xt1 and Xt2 seems to indicate that the former does a somewhat better job at getting skin colour right. Not too big a price difference between the two. Thank you for helping.

If portability is what you want then get a mirrorless camera. The Sony A6000 is a safe bet but you can look into getting older Sony mirrorless cameras too.

Yea, or one of the Chinese microSD -> SD adapters with integrated WLAN AP + SMB share/FTP capability.

Also, Sony's wireless connectivity and smartphone app is pretty much the best on the market.

I guess you could sell these lenses for $50, maybe $60. As a whole. They don't worth more than $5-10 each.
>>
>>3026531
Mostly this, but I'd say the 28mm might be worth 30 and the 135 could get 20, if they haven't been irreversibly broken by whichever moron "modified" them.
>>
>>3026533
I have them all up on eBay for $30.

I have no idea what the previous owner did to them... Turning the aperture rings doesn't do a thing to any of them. I'm wondering if it could be reversed if I opened them up
>>
>>3026543
Try mounting them on an FD camera.
I think that there might be some combination of button and lever mashing inside the FD mount that makes them stay open like that, find youtube vids on hacking fd lenses for video.
>>
>>3026552
I stopped by a camera shop this evening and got someone to look. Looks as though the problem was in the adapter I was using. Got the aperture to move in the Hanimex 28mm, going to check the rest tonight
>>

Unfortunately I don't have an FD camera, just a m4/3 GH2 and an APS-C Canon T3i

AFAIK the A7 should have a slightly longer recording time on one battery, but this seems pretty insignificant to me overall.

The E-mount has sharper lenses.
>>
>>3026651

Isn’t the a7 series limited to 29 minutes and 59 seconds due to (easily removable) software limits?
>>
>>3026677
No, they are limited to a few minutes of video at a time because the sensor overheats.

>>
>>3026697
>Stop posting irony
Talking of irony, I got to play with an A99 briefly the other day along with all the A7xx and A6xx series models that are still in production. It's the better Sony effort by quite a large margin but, at that price, you might as well pay the extra couple of hundred and get a real camera
>>
>>3026696

The a6000 and original a7 are, nothing else has heat problems unless you are in direct sunlight in 45 C+ weather.

Also works. Not much to get used to in general - you could still use fairly small lenses in a lot of situations.

Just got my first DSLR, it's a Nikon D3400. Right now I just have an AF-P Nikkor 18-55MM f/3.5-5.6 VR to go with it. I was thinking of buying a AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200MM f/4-5.6G ED because I need a lens for longer shots, is this a good choice? And what accessories should I prioritize getting next? Godox TT685 or V860II for TTL flash.
Yongnuo YN660 for manual control.

(All of these have RF transceivers builtin so you can control them/other flashes from their respective series with either the flash unit or a fairly inexpensive smaller remote).

There also was a TTL Yongnuo for Nikon, but I never used that one.

depends on what you want to shoot
neither of those lenses have ideal blur capability, and neither is great for macro. you're also missing super-telephoto and super-wide, plus you don't have perspective-correction/tilt-shift

if you want to screw around with macro on the cheap and you don't care about quality you don't need a macro lens. you can reverse a manual lens or use tubes. with a dedicated macro lens you would definitely care about quality: you don't want softness or CA at 1:1. the old ai-s lenses are good but they go for about the same used as the 40mm new. I don't know about third-party, tamron might be a good brand to look into used but I don't know the best ones

No they don't, if there are faults with lenses, you'll know about them from there. Such as the autofocus mechanism breaking on certain lenses and work-arounds, there's even a database of lens serial numbers for people to input if their lens has faulty mechanism, you can gauge more or less which to get if you buy used

>>
>>3026994
Vivitar 55mm f/2.8 1:1 macro is optically great and very reasonably priced. It was made with different mounts and also sold under different brands such as panagor. Another great old macro is tamron adaptall 90mm, but that one is only 1:2 and needs an extension to get true macro. There's also more modern tamron, tokina and sigma lenses that all perform very well, and should not cost more than 200-300 dollars used. Extension tubes are a cheap way to get in to extreme magnification.

I bought this as my first non point and shoot camera last year. The price was right, it's compact, and it was a huge step up compared to my phone and cheapo camera. Good features and it's definitely a handsome looking body.

That said, the menus are a chore and I wish there were more micro four thirds lenses. You can get better image quality for sure out of full frame cameras but of course they are generally costlier.

I would buy it again, no doubt. If I had more money I wouldn't mind having a full-frame dslr, either.

Forgot that I have my own question.

I'm looking for a wider-aperture lens than the 3.5 14-42 kit that comes with the em-10. I like to shoot at night and indoors and want a prime lens to shoot with.

My budget is up to $300 and I've seen the Panasonic 25 and 20mm 1.7 and 1.8 as options. Any recommendation or maybe wait for Olympus to have a sale?
>>
>>3027596
if you don't have experience, go with the panasonic 25mm; I doubt most people can tell the difference in image quality between that and the olympus equivalent, and for the almost double price I don't see the point

anyway, I got the 25mm last week and it's fine, it's a lens; if it's the first prime I wouldn't advise over-spending on anything else besides a 50mm equiv. (unless you mostly do landscapes I guess)

and yes, it's really nice for low light, but do keep in mind that at f1.7 you dof is quite shallow

>>
>>3027636
I don't consider it to cover all of these situations.

It's not bright enough in a lot of situations, doesn't allow for shallow DoF when you want subject isolation, and its sharpness is just lacking at various apertures.

That said, it is not bad for a ~$300-450 zoom lens. There are just strong reasons to use more expensive zoom lenses & primes.

Of course if you ask enough people, you'll inevitably find someone who thinks it is good enough for everything - not my opinion.

Kinda depends on how HQ you want (if you have larger pockets, that allows you to save some money or gain some "HQ" too).

rx100v is a bit overkill for me, i dont want another sony camera lol. thoughts on the g9x mk2? very slim compared to other pocketables and seems like it has decent picture quality especially with the new digic 7 it has

Thanks for the words. Currently only have a 50mm 1.4 which I know can cover a decent amount of stuff but looking for something that can help me in wide angle situations. I took a long break from photography so I feel like a lot of my knowledge just went away.

Never tried it. Superficially, it looks quite decent for a P&S.

> especially with the new digic 7 it has
Not sure why that is noteworthy. Canon almost consistently had worse computer hardware than Sony on the lower end, and yet you seem to precisely not want it? Worse marketing, I guess...?

Doesn't matter too much to most people anyhow, people don't even know what processor is in most cameras.
>>
>>3027742
the digic 7 is supposedly better in low light and image stabilization does a better job as well as tracking thats all. dont know if g7x mk2 is more worth it, looking more along the lines of canons point and shoots
>>
>>3027723
> looking for something that can help me in wide angle situations
Tamron 15-30mm, Tokina 16-28mm, Nikkor 14-24mm.

Samyang's 14mm prime could be another option, of course that's not "versatile". but just wide and inexpensive.

Or just the Tokina 24-70. That said, 24mm isn't immensely wide, not even on FF. ~74 degrees of horizontal field of view - definitely less than most people feel how wide their field of view "naturally" is, so it doesn't actually feel very wide as such.

Thoughts on the canon G7X mkii? Just got one and it's pretty good, especially with all the advanced features it offers and how quick the af is (which is why I bought it). >>
>>3027907
>Image quality isn't that amazing compared to my dslr which isn't surprising, but it's good I'd assume for a mirrorless.
You assume wrong. The popular mirrorless cameras tend to have equal IQ to the best DSLR with the same sensor size.

> Thoughts on the canon G7X mkii?
Reviews indicate it's still a fairly typical P&S - weak zoom lens, no viewfinder, not particularly fantastic in terms of sharpness, slow buffer, shitty AF, and reviewers generally weren't too enthused about how it operates.

We've seen far better fixed lens mirrorless cameras recently.

At least it seems to have a Sony BSI sensor or such so that low light noise is as passable as on a higher end smartphone.

But people made good shots with comparable smartphones before, so you might also get a decent number of good shots. Just doesn't seem like an imaging device that would appeal to me.
>>
>>3027956

You'd be better off getting an older used NEX-3 or something for like $50 and then just upgrading the body when it is time.

Not worth spending over half the price of an a6000 when you will just let it all go to waste later.

Keep in mind, the older interface on NEX cameras sucks a hundred donkey dicks.
>>
>>3027956
Better just save up for the A6000 directly, and use your smartphone or something for now.

I'll also suggest skipping the kit lens for either a better zoom lens, or even just a ~30-50mm equivalent prime for starters. [Personally, I put mine up for sale on day one, only kept the 55-210 from the two lens kit.]

True, but the Nex 3 is pretty hard to find here in Europe, I did find one with the kit lens for £120 though. I just sold my D3200 a few months ago so I can move to a smaller form factor camera so I really dislike having to go back to using my smartphone again. The Nex 3 is probably going to be pretty mediocre but pretty much any interchangeable lens camera is going to be better than having to use a phone.

It just made me realise how much advantages the mirrorless has as wide angle.

I have a question.
I use an ext. flash, Yongnuo 560III, no TTL, triggered optically. Now, when I set it to 1/4 power it's triggered fine, but when I set it to higher power the photos suddenly look darker!
I tried to debug this by:
A. I set the camera to 1" exposure to eliminate a scenario in which the flash fires too late because it takes longer to load or sth, but it didn't help
B. I tried setting the flash in the camera to fire on 2nd curtain, but the camera flash fired both 1st curtain and 2nd curtain, regardless, it didn't help (even though it should)
C. I fired the flash from the hotshoe on full power, and it worked fine

What could be the problem?
I need it to fire in full power since at the settings I want - ISO100, shutter 1/250, f/8 the only way to get enough light is by using full power.

Will getting an external trigger help?
Since I could use even more light, should I save money on the trigger and replace the flash with a more powerful flash?
I'm only willing to spend around $65.
>>
>>3028729
If it's fine on the hot shoe, but a 1" shutter time firing on first curtain isn't, then I'm stumped.
>>
Anyone nearsighted here?

If you have had experience with both contact lenses and glasses for photography, I'd like a comparison.

Not sure if they're worth the price -- I intend to only use contacts when I know I'm going to be shooting a lot.

Why can't I get good background blur with my point and shoot camera?

I am using a Kodak Easyshare Z700. It has a 35-175mm (equivalent) zoom lens and can shoot as open as F 2.8

When I take a picture of something up close it just doesn't blur the background very much. Is it because it is only the "equivalent" focal length? It has a crop factor of 6.02.

It's not just aperture and distance to subject, it's also distance to background and focal length. Shooting at a wide angle gives a deep depth of field. Put it all the way to 175, stand in the same spot, and see what happens.
>>
>>3028886
crop factor also affects depth of field.

f2.8 with a 6x crop factor gives equivalent dof to f17.5 on ff, i.e. good fucking luck with your bokeh.

Not terribly. Cameras aren't damaged THAT easily. You have a good chance of getting something with no functional damage.

> Is it okay to go for a 5-10 year old camera?
I would certainly not do that - but it depends on your requirements and also available money.
>>
>>3028992
i've bought a camera from 1966 and it works fine, if you go on Ebay you can always get a working camera unless specified otherwise.
And if you get ripped off you can get your money back.

Also whats this shutter life you're talking about?
>>
>>3028992
It's always better to look at used before buying new unless you're an experienced photographer who absolutely need the latest features, but camera technology isn't progressing all that fast nowadays anyways. People also generally tend to take care of their gear well so you can find used stuff in great condition.

The shutter count really doesn't matter at all

I wouldn't go further back than 5-7 years when buying a used camera. The T2i is still a solid camera, but look into the Nikon D3100 or D3200 too. And if you want a more compact camera then look at used Sony mirrorless cameras.

It is a Chinese "knockoff" to begin with (rebranded for burgers and yuropoors). Most other such tripods aren't inspired by it but rather sibling knockoffs.

The A6000 is great for its price.

It's not a great low light camera though, just "okay". You might want a more expensive low FF camera like the A7S II if you primarily want to shoot low light.

> Also, considering their E Mount, should I worry about that if ill want to upgrade lens later on?
There are quite a lot of lenses on the E-mount anyhow.

I currently don't suspect you'll have money to buy all the interesting high-end lenses on the E-mount anyhow, so running out of lenses to buy seems like a fairly remote concern.

Buy the A6500 or A6300 or one of the newer FF Sonys if you want to adapt a lot of Canon and maybe Nikon glass to the E-mount, though. The AF enabled adapters work better with these.

Get a used Manfrotto 055 or 190 legs and a good Arca-swiss head. Manfrotto's 498 with RC2 plate is still a good option, some autists here don't like it because it blocks the battery door on their plastic rabals.

>How does the film simulation work?
Colour profile applied to JPEGs.

>can you do multiple film simulations at once ie 1 shot makes multiple jpgs with say provia/astia/cc applied?
Actually yes. There's film simulation bracketing, where multiple shots are taken with different profiles applied (or one shot, and multiple results generated? I haven't used it yet).

>Can it be used with raw+jpg?
Yes
>Can you apply the effects to the raws after the fact?
Yes, because it only affects JPEG output. You can change the applied profile on a RAW in Lightroom these days.

>How does it go when you are rapidly changing what you are shooting, say you go for a hike and want to shoot a view in velvia but turn around and want to shoot a person with astia?
You put the film simulation selection shortcut on a function key of your choice.

My eyes are slightly worse than the maximum my Pentax K-5 diopter adjustment can go to, and I don't like taking my glasses off to take a shot then putting them back on.
>>
>>3029471
What diopter is your glasses? There are diopter adjustment viewfinders available for Pentax too. Similar to the O-ME53 magnifying one.
>>
>>3029472
-3.25 for the eye I use for shooting. I know of the diopter correction M adapters, but that goes back to taking my glasses off to take a shot, then putting them back on. The O-ME53 would be nice to have instead, but it seems to not work well with glasses.
>>
>>3029475
Well, if you use contacts you don't need to mess with the glasses

Considering selling my X-T1+Grip and 18mm f/2 for an X100F (I have an X-Pro2). Does anyone have one, and how do you like it?
>>
>>3029471
you could look at eyecups
a google search even shows a forum post from somebody who modified a hoodman eyecup to fit a K5

I fell for the Pentax meme and now I can't get a reasonable landscape lens (~17?) that's not from 2010. Good riddance me.

What are some good lenses for a Nikon D750?
>>
>>3029935
D750 user here. I'm extremely happy with my 50mm 1.8, 24-70N and 70-200 f2.8 VR2. Add a macro if you want to shoot bugs and shit.

Polaroid Studio Series Pro Slave Flash. Is this going to be fine for me to hand-hold and set off with my camera's flash? I just want to add some extra dynamic light to my impromptu portraits and candids

DA 16-85/3.5-5.6 or budget DA 16-45/4
Third party Tamron or Sigma 17-50/2.8, Rokinon/Samyang if you want wider than 17mm.
I also use my DA 35/2.4 for landscape panoramas

I forgot, DA 15/4 Limited. Compact and excellent IQ.

sigma 10-20mm $449
>>
Is there anyone that understands mtf charts and if so how does the new sigma 100 - 400 compare in sharpness to the 150 - 600 contempary at 400mm?
>>
>>3030016
Even my 50-500mm gives sharp results at 400mm on APS-C, I say don't worry about it, should be a better optical formula.
>>
>>3030029
I currently have a 150 600 and its sharp at 400 and no noticeable gains at 500 - 600. If this 100 400 is just as sharp then I would favour the much lower weight of it for walkaround
>>
>>3029968
Looks terrible.

Get a YN660 if you want a solid budget manual RF flash.
>>
>>3030047
I say look up example shots and 100% crops instead of MTF charts. Some bad charts can still produce good images across the frame even if it is labeled as a "bad lens" just for the numbers.
Also see if it has any wider aperture at 400mm compared to yours at 400mm, it can be a big difference in good separation from the background at longer distances.

Why don't websites like NatGeo and others ever post their exif data?

I'd love to know how exactly they got their shots.

I have the 17-70 2.8-4.5 Sigma from ~2007ish, those 17-50 tamron/sigma lenses are from ~2010 afaik, but they look good, wish they made new ones (and for pentax as well).
I will have a look at the rest, thanks for tips.

My old shitty point and shoot camera just shit itself. I pretty much used it only for /toy/ related stuff though. And I don't really know shit about cameras, this was an older hand-me-down from the early 2000's.

Whats a decent, not too expensive camera that would be good at taking pics of toys?

How? By not being clueless fucks that think "muh settings" makes the picture.

Do you guys know of any DIY gear instructions that don't result in shit and/or a waste of money?

I'm mostly just looking for a cheap stabilizer for a DSLR.

1/4"-20 bolt plus some string plus something to stand on at the end so that you can pull up and give it tension.

Hey all, I've been looking at the Canon G7X Mk 2, would you all say that this is a decent beginners camera? I have a $850-900 budget, id really appreciate any input!

>sensor size affects depth of field

Focal length and distance from subject & background mostly affects DoF. The fact that a smaller sensor has higher resolution at on a smaller area of the projected image means that smaller sensor = slightly shallower depth of field. This is because higher resolution on a smaller area means the sensor out-resolves circles of confusion (This is also the reason why smaller sensors encounter diffraction issues sooner than lower pixel density FF sensors)

That's why when using a full frame lens on a crop sensor, it's a good idea to use a shallower DoF on the lens' DoF scale if you're scale focusing just to be safe.

Of course, the shallower depth of field due to having a 'high pixel density small sensor' is counteracted by the fact that you're standing farther away from your subject for any given focal length than you usually would on FF due to crop.

>>3028886
Armed with this knowledge, your best bet for blurring the background on a compact sensor is shooting macro; ie. longest focal length possible and closest minimum focus distance you can get, which means you'll be limited to shooting small objects. Your camera might even have a macro function or something.

pic related: 8mm lens on compact sensor blurring the background

Just thought I'd clarify that.
