These are just snapshots. Anyone who is physically able can hold a camera, point it at something, and press the shutter button. Don't over think what you're doing but at least make a conscious decision about what you are photographing and why. Otherwise you're doing something that google street view could do much better.
Also, buy lots of alcohol gel.
ask people to take their portrait, unless you're adamant about these being candid. most people at a festival will say yes. this will give you much more time and flexibility in nailing your shot. also try to select good looking/interesting people.
well Alex, would you consider those being good photos?
I guess not, otherwise you wouldn't be here asking photonerds for advice.
Here's my advice:
Take along some fast prime (35mm or 50mm) and make sure you stop down enough to get the people completely in focus. The prime makes you get closer and forces you into some interaction with your subject. You probably get to know some interesting people.
I wonder where you guys got the idea that "portraits" have to be shot wide open..
take >>2746779 as an example: You shot this wide open (f/2.8) at ISO100 at 1/400s. The same photo at ISO200 and 1/200s, but f/5.6 would have looked a lot better and not only the small corner of his sunglasses would be in focus.

by not going
dude weed lmao

Improve existance for all these peoples parents & the world at large by killing as many as possible before yourself.
Hippy fucks. Outrageous culture theifs.
I definitely think you should try engaging the subjects instead of shooting them eggy-style.
They don't look like they mind a bit of attention anyway. Get them to pose or do funny faces or dance or whatever. Half of them probably brought guitars, so get some shots of them playing or pretending to play maybe.
You know, something to make it more than just a headshot of a hippie or hipster or whatever the word is now. Some action and personality.
