How did you guys do this year?
>>2731943
Here's mine
bump, will make/upload mine tonight when I get home
>>2732014
>bumping on /p/
>>2732033
lel, na it because I am on my phone and replying to a thread puts the thread on my watchlist. Ill go on pee later and I'll forget if I Dont see the thread immediately. most of browsing is on the phone
>>2731943
Do you guys use legit cameras for insta photos or you upload your real camera shots on yo instagram?
>>2732049
I take pictures with my DSLR and post them on instagram after post. I never take a pic with my phone.
>>2732050
Doesn't instagram compress the shit out of photos and thus loses its quality?
Or does it look visually intact at least?
>>2732065
I find that it's okay. I use a photo shop action to down restaurant and sharpen, so the photo is already optimized for instagram.
>>2731943
is that Selenis Leyva top left
>>2732081
Yes at SF pride.
>>2732065
ehh it doesn't look bad. And the pictures are small so it is decent for viewing on a phome in an efficient way, so it isn't like it's being compressed (if any at all, I Dont know) a lot and being shown on a big screen.
ehhh pretty average i guess.
How do you do this?
5600 likes on 21 posts. My Insta has only been active for 6 months.
>>2732262

Not entirely sure. My main influx came when some random account with 45k followers reposted one of my shots (without asking). But still, only received about 600 likes and 50 followers from that.
Pretty chuffed. 5600 likes and 525 followers in less than 6 months.
>>2732259
That location for the top left is fucking sick. Where is that?
>>2732274
The Twelve Apostles in Victoria. Australia.
>>2732273
actually pretty good, ive had mine since freshman year of hs and i only have 430 followers and 2500 likes to 34 posts, but i use my instagram for personal rather than post my /p/ photos
Not too bad I guess.
Definitely my best year in terms of followers and likes though I don't advertise my stuff much and use the bare minimal hashtags. I'm just content over my personal growth as a photographer

Are all of those shot large format film?

Nice. I've got an 8x10 camera, but I'm afraid to use it because I don't know a good way to scan it for a good price. How do you do your scans? And what's your workflow after they're scanned?
>>2732647
I've got a nice overview of my workflow here: http://www.alexburkephoto.com/2013/06/02/scanning-and-editing-color-negative-film/
Hope that helps!
>>2732649
Awesome, thank you very much!

I don't know why instagram likes are so exciting to you guys, but I'm glad you're happy.
>>2731943
Not too bad. Does anyone have any tips to improving traffic to instagram accounts?
I'm curious to how many followers you all have.
neat, pls follow :)
https://www.instagram.com/will_cowal/
>>2732745
ive got like 300, but i've only posted like 37 times. I usually get like 4 new followers per post
my Instagram is KazCanning by the way, I usually follow back
>>2731943
Don't you guys feel pretentious posting DSLR, etc camera pics on Instagram, when it's designed for mobile platforms?
>>2732808
What? Why would that be pretentious at all? Do you feel like an idiot posting cell phone pics on facebook because it was developed as a desktop platform? Alot of the good photos you see on instagram were probably taken with a dslr
i didn't shoot a single photo this year but I did get in some good posts in the gear thread
>>2732745
I have 530 followers. 21 posts, account active for 6 months.
You also need to compare how many followers an account has to how many accounts they are following. If they're following a number of accounts equal to or greater than their number of followers, they are probably just a follow4follow faggot. If they're following a number of accounts less than half their number of followers, they're legit (like me).
>>2732861
So how did you end up with that many followers? You don't hashtag your posts, what drives the traffic to your page?
>>2732571
She's a keeper, so put up with all the shit and remember, don't kill her.
ee
>>2732808
>"waa I can't afford good gear so everyone else is cheating waa"
Get gud kid
>>2732914
Of course I use hashtags. As many as I can, in fact (30). But I edit them out of my posts after a few hours. At that point they're nearly usless.
For my first year in photography I'm happy.

So how does it work for you guys?
Especially those with DSLRs or those who shot in a format that's not 1:1.
Do you crop the picture as a preview and link the full thing to a tumblr/flickr or something account?
Or do you leave the picture as is and have instagram or an app add borders?
I'm interested since I've been using instagram as a facebook extension only so to speak, personal stuff between friends, but now that I'm taking photography kinda seriously again (as a hobby) I'd like to share it more.
>>2733020
>As many as I can, in fact (30)
Shit man, what can you even hashtag after say your location and theme?
Do you use tags that are trending, or community tags? like say #ishootfilm or something?
>>2733812
Lots of community tags. I get about 20 likes in the first 10 seconds after posting from all of the people using like bots.
o-okay I guess
>>2733815
post them
>>2733815
Shit, I'm not sure I can make myself do that. I cringe at the thought of using hashtags, even more so what I would consider unnecessary tags.
Like say, I can tag the place, and maybe the style of photo, but then adding something like #nikon, or #35mm would make me feel super weird.
>>2733842
>>2733872
Just shit like #buyfilmnotmegapixels #filmisnotdead and #staybrokeshootfilm. I feel like a filthy whore doing it - but it brings more people to my feed to interact with. If you aren't on Instagram for the user interaction there are much better platforms on which you can simply post your work.
>>2732259
What's your insta homie?
>posting actual camera shots on instagram
that shit's supposed to be exclusively for smartphone snapshits
>>2733916
"supposed to be"
haha Hey autist, how are those rules and guidelines working out for you? I bet you're super fun at parties. Also, end result is all that matters. Saying "My photos look worse because I took them the way i was supposed to" does nothing.
>>2733908
I see, interesting.
So why Instagram and not Flickr? I'm out of touch, I left photography on hold for a long time but I was using Flickr at the time, are there any new and better platforms? what does Instagram get you over other communities?
I've never shared my photos with other people besides /p/ and my friends.
>>2732740
First off, take the word "photography" out of your gay ass name. It's instagram, you can literally ONLY share pictures, you don't need to tell us it's photography. I can't explain it but that shit bugs me so bad.
Second, interact with the community. Click like on pictures you like. Scroll through hashtags you enjoy and interact with pictures you appreciate.
>>2732745
I have just shy of 6,000 followers, 500 posts and follow just over 600 people.
>>2731943
Brilliantly, a restructuring in packages and prices means I am doing less work for the same money. A diversification in marketing has meant less reliance on social media and my average income per wedding is up over £200.
Oh sorry, I thought we were talking about stats that matter........
>>2734245
>wedding photography
>>2734246

>>2734253
>Validates himself by number of worthless 'likes'

>>2732657
thanks!
>>2734245
>>wedding photography
>>2734245
So what did you do?
It's nice to see that you finally jumped into the 1000 per wedding.
I don't know where you live, but it seems you're doing well.
Also funny, I though May and June were the best months for income based on shooting weddings.
>>2734327
A mix of things, mainly a big push of SEO on venue specific long tail keywords so people searching for "Frodsham Hall Wedding Photography" or similar would find pages on blog tailored to these venues. At the moment my business comes from a pretty even split of 1/3 social media (nearly all Facebook), 1/3 Google, 1/3 word of mouth. Another big factor was improving on page conversions, so getting people who visit the site to actually get in touch.
Last year I over stretched myself doing too many weddings so it was time to drop the numbers and put up prices. I also dropped my ceremony only package (way more stressful than a full day as you have everything to do and less time to do it in for less money).
To be clear, that is weddings booked, not cash money received. I take a deposit of 10% then the rest is due a month before. See the attached for actual money in each month.
>>2734331
You do basically the same thing some friends do except you're more clever about your marketing.
Nice, good luck.
>>2734339
I think that people underestimate the importance of marketing yourself as a product. With 10 miles of me there may be 100 better photographers who just can't pitch themselves properly.
>>2733913
@jackmcmaster87
Business grew by $13k locally to where I have a monopoly on the entire nightlife market (save the ghetto clubs) and Now an venue owner has come forward and wants to pay for exclusivity and bring revenue to about $10k/mo with $3k profit assuming i just collect my cut and don't work any.
Started getting booked across the state for festivals and other party events at about $50/hr for small events and $800/day for larger festivals with food/drink/travel paid for.
so it has been a pretty good year.
>>2734367
Fuck that is awesome, well done. All events or do you do anything else?
not too bad I guess
>>2734367
>$50/hr for small events and $800/day
seems way too low
>>2733918
>>2734245
the only people to think that wedding photography matters are wedding photographers themselves.
hell, you are to photography what mickeyD cooks are to actual chefs.
>>2732530
really nice pinks, do you shoot infrared or is it post processing?
>>2734848
Never said it matters. Said it pays the bills.
Oh, and it matters terribly to the couple.

>>2735165
cuz reproduction attraction
