Not a photography enthusiast like everyone else here but I think the fat ledge is a bit imposing/distracting in the foreground, especially because of it's bluriness. Otherwise, it has potential. Is that some abandoned/new building? It seems like it's being furnished still.

She is a model and an "actress" doing shitty reality TV shows. I had a 6 hours digital shoot with her with hundreds of pure hot photos but lost all the data... Fortunately I always take few "Terry like" snapshits with my point and shoot minolta i picked up for 10 bucks at an online auction, so all I have left is like 5 pictures on Fuji 200 Superia

The effect is called bokeh. It's what happens when a photo is shot with a wide aperture to create a shallow depth of field. I suggest you read up on basic photographic theory, it'll help you understand how images are constructed.

whats the point of shooting MF for scans like this?

The scan looks fine at that res, what don't you like about it?
I'm more concerned about the development problems.
Those splotches running down the centre left. Either water marks or uneven development.

I got the same lightleak. Is it the lens causing it? I read online that putting a tape over the filmcanister-peek window -hole :D might help with it. didn't work for me though. Seems to be bigger if I zoom with it and less if I don't.

amazon runs out of stock of those kits pretty fast.
get it either here http://filmphotographyproject.com/store/unicolor-c-41-development-kit-1-liter-kit

or here http://www.freestylephoto.biz/10123-Unicolor-Powder-C-41-Film-Negative-Processing-Kit-1-Liter

first link is cheaper. They also sell 1L e-6 kits while amazon only sells 1 gallon.

>>2718049
as I understand it, the tetenal, unicolor, and arista developing kits are all pretty much the same. I've used the unicolor and had no problems with it.

I'm an internet photo critic and this is my first critique:
Anons photograph dsc_0722 is interesting but does not work for me in some aspects.
Framing: - upper rail and ggb do not meet
- upper rail is too high
- horizontal rail is too centered, should be lower
- too much space at the bottom end
>maybe a horizontal shot would work better than a vertikal
subject: - somehow too much: gull, pier, rail, bridge, ship, coast
- the gull is calm and cool but the other stuff is moving and exciting, connecting, unknown-> would prefer a flying gull
- the dof is good though
colour: - i like it

I'm an internet photo critic.
Please don't question my critique.
My critique is built on personal feels and does not have any scientific background.
Every human has a different understanding of the conception or idea of a picture and the reality. So there can never be a total consensus.
I would prefer a horizontal framing in this situation out of curiosity. Maybe that's how the picture works.
>>
>>2723264
thanks bub
>>
How many photographers does it take to screw in a light bulb?

10. 1 to do it, and 9 to say they could've done it better.
>>
>>2723081
>first critique
as well as last buddy, a horizontal photo would have taken away from the subject of the photo, the gull. The DOF adds to the fact that the GGB is not the subject.

>upper rail and ggb do not meet
why should they? the bridge is being framed by the rails. If a rail went through it, do you think the photo would be better?

>the gull is calm and cool but the other stuff is moving and exciting
what causes the rest of this photo to be moving and exciting? everything in depth is frozen, nothing in the back is moving... or exciting

Take some time and learn some of the rules of photo composition, it could help you appreciate some of the photos on this site better.

Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now, so we'll hunt him. Because he can take it, because he's not a hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector, a Dark Knight.

Also this doesn't look like film. If this were shot with a lower iso it might work. If the person was to be the subject, get closer and make him a subject. if the city was to be your subject, actually photograph the city.

The blurry ledge doesn't add much, but I see where your thinking was. This is good, consider how to utilize leading lines like this. But what does it add when it is a blob separating the two interesting parts of the photo.

I find getting the right color out of scanned negatives is pretty tough. After a year or so I managed to get a workflow with multiple curve and color balance layers in photoshop, but it's still a very arduous process. How do you guys deal with that?

No bully here, I dig it, what lens was this shot through?
>>

I take a "white and color balance" shot, basically I draw a circle, lines and put some color in a piece of white paper, and it's always my first photo in the roll.
I balance to it, save as preset, then edit the rest with that, small adjustments here and there.
I feel kinda stupid doing it, but if I don't do that I get frustrated with the resulting blue hue that negatives end up with after inverting and so on.

Where you at bruh? Berlin /p/leb here.

arguing about the exact positioning of the rails is silly when the light is dull. you focused on producing a "smart" composition when the light was dull. overall, as a number one rule, don't bother take a pic when the light is dull. it will save you film.

I tried to white balance with a white wall once. As you would expect, it saved me some work to get the color about right, but only in shots with similar light.

My main problem ist to fix the balance of tones in shadows, mids and highlights when I removed the color cast. That's pretty straightforward with Superia when you set the black and white points of each channel in your curves layer. Fine-tuning the color balance on the other hand is frustrating. Worst of all, if I got one pic right and copy the adjustments to the next one shot in slightly different light it doesn't fit at all, so I have to start all over again.
Because of its relatively grey base color I've only shot Superia 200 in the last months. I tried Ektar and Portra before and was really happy with the result, but spending hours editing one picture was highly unsatisfying.

I live in Darmstadt and shot that pic on my way home at Ffm Hbf.

That color is absolute balls. And don't give me any of that "hurr durr it's film" bullshit. Unless you're cross processing the film or purposefully using shit that expired two decades ago, then the colors shouldn't ever be that shitty.

You REALLY need to read Alex Burke's blog posts about scanning film and processing color using luminosity masks. Honestly. It makes removing color casts so fucking easy.

>>
>>2732697
Well it could be that I had to drop the brightness on them to fix the shitty as camerastore scans I got? Genuinly curious as to whats wrong with the colors beyond "being balls" they look about the same as the digital ones I took as well.

Old snaps I got reminded of, labscans since I haven't retaken them with the dslr scan setup.

So I'm thinking of buying a Nikon F-mount film camera since I have two Nikkor (D) lenses (35 and 50), maybe something like an F801 since they are cheap and have AF.

I've been shooting with an Olympus OM-1 which I got for 20 eurobucks paired with the usual 50 f1.8.
I also got myself a cheap point and shit to carry around in my jacket, it doesn't get much use though since I haven't fixed the lightseals in the back.

I have to spend 50 euros, 22.81 will be spent on some shit I need which isn't for photography but it's sold for cheap in a photography online store (batteries).
Same store also has great prices for 35mm film, and I have to spend at least 27.19 euros so that I get free shipping.
Agfa, Fuji, Kodak, Ilford.
Most expensive single roll is 6 euros, cheapest is 2.50.
I'm thinking Delta (400? or 100?) since I've never shot that.
Color I don't know, I've been shooting with super cheap color because I haven't fixed the light leaks in one of the cameras, but I recently got one without that problem.

I'm pretty new at film and I'm just wondering if there's an optimum workflow?

How do you develop and scan your film? Do you do it yourself or just get it scanned at a lab?

Do you have any control over the size, quality etc. that they scan your film at? My city is pretty shit for photolabs and they basically just hand you a CD with 3000x2000px images on.

Also how do you process your photos? Do you have a lab correct your photos pre-scan or do you just do it in Photoshop/Lightroom?

I've been cropping/editing my stuff in Photoshop but it sort of feels like I'm cheating transferring something analog and then editing it digitally.

When it comes to printing your photos do you prefer to keep it completely analog or would you process your photos digitally and then print from a digital file?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks!

There's many options.
>Developing
At home is cheap and easy if you have the space
Common big store labs do common stuff like B&W and C-41 for cheap
Speciality film, positives, etc. need good labs.
You can mail roll, they will develop, you can ask for a contact sheet or cd to come with the negatives for cheap and they'll mail it back.

>Scan
Labscans depend on the hardware they have. Many are shit, many do shit scans, good labs will have a drumscan but that's expensive usually.
They have presets for popular film, so everything is automatic, if it comes like shit you'll need to correct it but you'll be basically correcting a jpg, so you'll lose quality in general.
DSLR scanning is a popular method and allows for a lot of tweaking, plus it's cheap if you already have a DSLR.
Flatbed scanner is a cheap at home option if you don't have a DSLR, it's good but not as sharp (for 35mm film) as a DSLR or better equipment.

>Editing
No problem, why would it be? We've been editing/correcting film since film exists.

>Printing
Many don't even print now.
Many print "digitally" with common printers.
You can send a file to an online "store" that prints on good paper and good quality, they'll mail you your prints.
You can mail negatives to a lab and have them be print on photopaper the traditional way with an enlarger and shit but it's expensive, usually reserved for art prints.
Common big labs simply scan digitally and print digitally so the quality is shit, think something like those Kodak instant print machines in stores.
>>
>>2734965
Thanks, is it worth investing in a 35mm scanner?

Would it best to scan as a tiff rather than a jpg if I'm doing it myself? Or even raw if I do it with a DSLR.
>>
>>2734976
>Would it best to scan as a tiff rather than a jpg if I'm doing it myself? Or even raw if I do it with a DSLR.
That's the point of doing it yourself, working with raw files.

Do you mean a dedicated 35mm scanner? depends on your budget.
That said, good ones aren't cheap, and cheap ones are shit so you'd be better off with a DSLR or Flatbed.
>>
>>2734981
I'm not >>2734928 but can you scan higher than 8bit?

Can I scan 16bit Color if I can do it as tiff
>>
>>2734983

>>
Hey there! I don't feel like starting a new thread, so I'm asking here. What are the cheapest sites/stores inside Europe for buying film? I live in Finland. Thanks!
>>
>>2735018
If you are starting out with film I suggest using cheap one's like Kodak Colorplus. It's supercheap in Estonia right now. To Finland, shipping is about 10€ iirc. google shortlink /0i4anJ
>>
>>2735023
I've only shot few rolls in color (something I definitely need to practice more), and mostly worked with Ilford HP5+ and that seems to be working for my b&w stuff.
>>
>>2735018
Do you have in finland something like a website that compares prices of products online?
It's probably cheaper to buy from a store that ships within your country.
If not, amazon tends to have alright prices for film.
>>
>>2723445
>>2723448
>>2723449
Really nice, what camera/film did you use?
>>
You know /p/hagots we should probably start mentioning the film and if possible focal length or lens used.
>>
>>2735083
Because stats and exif are so much more important than photo content, composition, lighting, etc. We have to focus on what is truly important around here.
>>
>>2735085
No obviously not, it's just that I feel some people have been asking (like the one above me) about film used.
And focal length could help give an idea on how the image was composed, hence why I mentioned first focal length and not lens.
But you're right, maybe it's a bad idea and we could fall into a circlejerk.
>>
>>2735092
Just because one person is focused on the wrong aspects of photography doesn't mean we need to change to cater to them. We should take the opportunity to inform them how photography actually works.

Also, by "a circlejerk" I assume you mean "talking about photography, rather than equipment"
>>

I meant a gear/film circlejerk were many would start using the same film, or everyone shooting with the same camera, stuff like that.

No everyone here is a bunch of liars, no way that film stuff looks this good. It's ancient man. Analog shit looks like shit plus takes a lot of room. Digital looks much cleaner and takes no non-digital room at all.
pic related is a real film picture, look how shit it looks. Imagine it being done in digital.

Hello /p/, I know this picture is fucking garbage but I have a question. This was shot with expired 35mm and as you can see there is a weird bend on the bike's top tube. Is this because of the film or the way it was uploaded?

Thanks, appreciate it! Minolta SRT 101 with the 50mm f/1.7 lens. think the film was Fuji Xtra 400 for the first two and 1600 Fuji for the last one
