Still looking for good stuff for the Pastebin and Imgur. Maybe we can get a list of Youtube vids and put them in the Pastebin or keep a couple important ones in the OP.

Damn, git gud. I think Miami anon got skunked the first time we went out because it was like noon in the middle of summer but after that was catching stuff. And last time my sister was here, brought her fishing for the first time and set her up with a small Rapala or something and she was getting Mayans and little bass.

Fuck, I laid down on my couch yesterday at 4pm. Woke up at 9pm and was up for about an hour, then went right back to sleep until a few min ago. Felt good.

I've been going fishing with a great bunch of guys over the past 4 months. We've sort of picked fishing up on a whim but we're learning as we go. What is the most accessible source for learning the lingo? I hate sounding so unsure about what I'm talking about in regards to fishing. Did you guys learn the terminology from someone else? For the record I've caught two catfish and a few yellow bream so I'm not useless just unknowledgeable.
>>
>>976872
Google it.

It's confusing either way because so much of it is regional or depends on the age of the person. One lure could be called a Rapala or stick bait or plug or jerk bait by 4 different people and they could all be referring to the same thing. Names for fish are like that too.
>>
>>976872
Just watch some youtube guides. Bass fishing is the most popular starting point so it has the most and the best tutorials. Now bass fishing is pretty simple so it won't be a master class but it will be a starting point.

Also watch Niggas on Da River, it's not educational really it's just funny.
>>
>>976876
What ever habbend to the /out/ youtube channel? Everybody wanted to get a Gopro and start making vids and nobody has done shit lately. Plus Mainebub too busy being a normie.
>>
>>976877
Why buy a go-pro when you can buy almost a dozen crankbaits
>>
>>976633
Probably a dumb question but what is better live bait or rubber lures? Does it depend on the fish? I've had little success with frozen bait I think its because it disintegrates as it thaws
>>
>>976880
Live bait is probably more successful in most situations but kinda boring imo.
>>
>>976882
I've been using some dragon soft baits but haven't had any success with them. All the fish I have caught were with live worms or frozen prawns
>>
>>976884
You know with soft baits, you aren't supposed to just cast them and let them sit like live and frozen bait. You are supposed to work them like all other lures so it looks like they are live.
>>
>>976877
I'm waiting until it's nice enough to get the boat out
>>
>>976888
wtf i AM an idiot. Well that is going to help in future
>>
>>976892
Yeah, like with bass fishing, you could buy live nightcrawlers and put them on a hook and let them sit under a bobber and you will catch fish. If you do the same thing with a plastic worm, it won't do shit. The live nightcrawler will at least wiggle and get some attention.

With the plastic worm, you rig it up with a Texas rig or wacky rig or whatever, cast it out, and reel it back in bouncing it along the bottom or whatever technique you want to use and this makes it look alive.
>>
>>976868
Well it's not my fault grills don't know how to feesh. I caught em alright.

And what exactly are you trying to do?

For just soaking bait with a bobber, split shots and basically any hook will work as long and it's the right size for the fish you want to catch.

If you want to Texas rig the worms, you want bullet weights and offset worm hooks. 1/4oz is a good all around size for Texas rigs for bass. And then the hook depends on the bait, but 3/0 EWG and 4/0 EWG are probably my most used sizes.

In pic related, they are all "Offset Shank Worm Hooks" but the ones with the curved shanks are "EWG" (extra-wide gap) and can be a little easier to use on certain baits.

All u need is Original Swisher Sweets.

Idk, I haven't smoked in so long. Only time I would roll grape is if everything else was stale. Strawberry Swishers are good if you need some flavor, not nearly as overpowering as grape. But Strawberries were always stale because they weren't fast sellers. Peach was always gross, strong like grape but with worse flavor. I don't think they really even sell them anymore.

Then if you got some fire, get down on the Garcia Vegas. A little tricky to roll because they have an extra layer but it complements the weed rather than masking it.

I've heard a lot of bullshit from pot heads but that's up there. Inhaling smoke in no way helps allergies or histamine response from your body. THC is not an antihistamine. You can't even attempt to claim that.

Rod & Reel A E S T H E T I C

Not my photo, but I absolutely will not buy a fishing pole unless it has cork grips, (I guess saltwater poles would be excluded from the rule)

I love my childhood Shakespeare look, and any similar style of full cork handle, black rod with rainbow shiny text/ lettering.

Also, do visual aesthetics matter a lot to you for a pole? Or just the performance, action, quality of it?

I will say appearance matters quite a bit. I can't stand the look of a foam handle. Or those weird off-black, grey, or yellow poles.

Also love gold on reels, makes me think of Leupold.

You're a fucking retard.

There's so much wrong going on that picture it's impressive.

Cork is garbage. Hard Foam or cork rubber blend is objectively better.they weather better and stand up to salt.

The only thing worse about that pic could be if the guy stuck the hook into the cork.

Cork is the reason I won't buy G Loomis or St Croix rods.
>>
What are the roles of different pole lengths? I bought a 6'6" because the sticky said so. I mention it on here and I was told there was no reason to not have gotten the 7'.
>>
>>977288
Looks good to me. Call me a Fudd but I like the traditional look. But I equally like my Glock and fuddy shotguns. But for a fucking fishing pole, where it's sole purpose to to be a bendy rod, it doesn't fucking matter. This isn't like arguing wood baseball bats versus shaved aluminum ones where there is a performance difference.
Holy fuck you're the retard.
>>
>>977289
That sticky was written by retards and endorsed by trip fag idiots so....

Watch informative fisherman on YouTube and fluke masters 3 rod selection guide on youtube.

6'6" is okay for most thinga. 7 to 8 is more appropriate for most people.
>>
>>977290
Yeah I'm a retard because I don't want cork on my rod that dries out and gets destroyed from being wetted and dried over and over. Sure.

There is very clearly a performance difference.

The only thing cork is slightly better at is not being as cold to hold in brisk nipply weather. That's it.
>>
>>977289
Depends, 6'6" is a good all around length for freshwater and easy to use. Theoretically 7'+ will help cast further. But then again, so would a 14' rod but it gets more difficult to use.

I wouldn't second guess yourself. In the future if you want to set up another combo, go 7' and see how you like it. I was using a 6' all day today and it's a fun one to flick little 1/8oz Mepps.

>>977260
Ehh, I could lose a few elbows but nowhere near as bad as >>977269

>>977284
I fear change.
>>
>>977291
Well goddamnit. Drop that fucking sticky then. I even felt that 6'6" seemed a bit small, I don't see weight or compactness to be of any advantage for a fishing pole to my newb experience. Weight a little, I guess. Are these the /out/ /fish general guys?

I was looking for a simple
Ultra Light is for: bluegill trout, (i'm guessing)
Light: (big trout bass)
etc
Medium:
Heavy:

6'-
6'6''-
7'-
7'7''-

>>
>>977295
Lel you are overthinking this. It's all preference and 6'6" is pretty much standard for a M weight bass rod.

>>
>>977295
>let's change the sticky to make things more complicated and useless for people who already have no idea what they will like
Also forgot to mention that a real long rod will generally balance like shit with a small reel. Especially if you get a fiberglass rod like an Ugly Stik.

UL rods are normally like 5'-6', M rods are 6'-7', and MH or H, the most common sizes will be 6'6"-7'6". At least for freshwater.

Of course you can do the 7'3" UL if you prefer it, and you can do an 8' M bass rod if you want, but most people don't.

Game wardens.

As far as freshwater, I don't think FL has a limit. I remember looking into it and couldn't find it. And anyway it isn't about using all of the rods at once, but rather having different setups for different purposes.

For freshwater, I always liked to have at least 3. A UL for panfish, a M for bass, and a ML for carp or catfish and soaking bait.

It's more dense than lead so it might be nice when you really need to cast out deep into the wind. At those bulk prices, that's not too bad. I have one, I just hate running back to my tackle bag to get it when I'm trying to snap a pic and release the fish anyway.

And don't talk shit about the Nikes. Those 6.0 shoes were around with the same design for years and were comfy as fuck. Tie them once when you first buy em and just slip them on and off like slippers for the next 2 years.

>>977766
The pastebin in the OP had my copypasta if you are in the US. Although other anon bought a 6'6" rod (that is the standard for a medium weight freshwater rod) and was pissed he didn't go longer because salty shitposting anon was making him second guess himself.

Basically just a medium weight spinning combo. The rod will say something like "M Weight, 6lb-12lb line, 1/8oz-3/4oz" and the reel will normally have a size like "30" or "3000" and line ratings like "Mono- 6lb/170yds, 8lb/150yds, 10lb/130yds". Rod will likely be between 6' and 7'. Get some 8lb mono line like Trilene, might want to ask the retailer to spool it if you're unsure since they will normally do it for cheap or free.

Assorted aberdeen hooks, split shots, bobber, and some bait and you are good to go. Live bait like nightcrawlers is always easiest and should catch whatever is there. See what species are around before you spend a ton of money on lures. If you have a local tackle shop or even a big retailer like Cabela's or Bass Pro, they should be pretty knowledgeable and help you get set up properly for your area.
>>
Does fishing line ever go bad? I have brand new line sitting in boxes, that's about 4+ years old. Also haven't fished in 4+ years so the string on my poles is old too. I feel like buying bulk 1000 yards would be a bad idea if it should be relatively fresh.
>>
>>977766
>Can you suggest starter gear for lakes and rivers?

Boat or shore?
>>
>>977790
You can try it. Sometimes the memory loops can get bad on line like that when it had been sitting forever. But if it was stored in a dark and dry place, it should be ok.

And the line on your reels, if you're using regular monofilament, you want to change that like minimum every spring before you go out for the first time. The sun and water degrades it and makes it weak and brittle and the memory loops (make it look like a Slinky when you cast) can get really bad from sitting on the reel.

lol dude, have you heard of pockets?

My tape measure is about the size of a silver dollar. It's retractable and costs $3.99 on amazon. It doesn't even have to be straight or aligned well with the fish, as long as a few inches are in the picture we can use it to figure out a length. Your shoes on the other hand are completely meaningless. And kind of embarrassing desu. Come on son, time to grow up.

>>
>>977790
>Does fishing line ever go bad?

not from time per se, but from sitting on a spool unused long enough yes it probably can get memory coils that are pretty annoying. If you go through 1000yds/season it shouldn't be a problem.
>>
What's a good setup for stocked trout at a lake that's heavily stocked every other month. I'm a newb getting back into fishing. Currently have a 5'6" Ultralight, and minimal random tackle.

I'm thinking 4lbs test, powerbait, weights, but what size hooks? Do I need bobbers? How should I set up the powerbait? What lure's do trout like?
>>
>>977803
I know, I have a small one like that too but I already have my wallet and keys and cell phone and cigs and pliers and a rag and a knife in my pockets so I don't feel like carrying more. If I really want to get a measurement, I just lay it down next to a rod.

>>977813
I don't have trout down here, but with little powerbaits for panfish I normally run jigheads or underspins from like 1/32oz up to 1/4oz. Get an assorted pack of smaller jigheads and assorted pack of panfish sized Aberdeen hooks and you will be straight.

Just remember the sizes are different between brands so might be worth checking them out IRL before you buy. Some brands, the 2000 might be closer to an UL than a M and that same brand's 3500 could be a good M size. I think Shimano's 2500 is good for the M but not sure how large their 4000 is.

>>978324
my closest one will let e test drive anything i want
>>
>>977943
now I guess I see it as an act against personal liberties like other laws, specifically to this state.
but it's not really one of the worse ones here. Other fishing regulations arent that bad, although I heard the salt water creel limits have been tightening up

with a senko you literally do nothing and let it fall though. i might bounce it a few times on the bottom but if they don't hit it on the initial fall i just reel it back in and throw it somewhere else.

Yeah, but you concede liberties on little shit like that and they know they can push more and more until eventually you need to pay $400 for a background check just to get the fishing license and another $2700 for the license plus a 45¢/lb fee on every fish you catch.

I used to be much more left-leaning until I moved from a real blue state to a historically red state. Tell the fags in Jew York that it's you can still have schools and firefighters without paying $12 for a pack of smokes.

Def not topwater, but some people wouldn't consider it a jerkbait because it dives more like a regular crankbait.

I don't even know what the proper name for stuff like Crystal Minnows or Original Rapalas would be. Shallow diving stickbait/plug/crankbait?

No. Cats and rays almost always bite anything on the bottom that has a smell. I was fishing with shrimp. The guy chumming who caught the drum was using a big artifical swim bait that looked like a mullet. He caught a decent sized blacktip too.

y u no lip them?
>>
>>978646
you can do that to, some have abraisive small teeth for gripping onto stuff
most catfish i catch are small ish so i dont need to lip them
i do lip sea robins all the time though
>>
>>978615
I do it almost like that with smallish ones. Grab'em over the back, directly behind dorsal with right pectoral between middle and pointer fingers, and left dorsal between back of thumb and ring finger. Maybe someone has a pic of this?

Once they're 3 or 4 pounds, you literally have to squeeze the shit out of them to do this, because of the slimyness. If you let up your grip when they flop, you'll get gigged.

Bigger than that, I stab'um in the brain with a mora. Fillet gloves or a Leatherman can be helpful if you don't want it dead.

I'm sure most of ya'll know you don't put a flopping cat in the chest with your beer. He'll drink it all when you're not looking.
>>
>>978647
What you really have to worry about when lipping or gilling is the plates in the throat that they crush crustaceans and mollusks with. If you drop'um when they bite down. There's a good chance you'll get gaffed in the leg or foot.

Gripping that lil cat felt like grooping a nice breast.

>Why not just a couple of big, sealed deep cycles?

They're flooded deep cycles. You mean like Optima batteries? I looked into those...and I've figured that properly maintaining these instead is smarter economically. Also need extras so I can fish 3 fresh batteries while another 3 are charging from the day before.....like I said it's a problem lol.

>Gripping that lil cat felt like grooping a nice breast.

something tells me wasn't long ago you were groping ur mama's nice breast.
>>
>>978700
Your Lead/acid batteries will only take daily charging and depletion for a couple months before your potential amp hours start dropping, and then dissappear.

Those 6 will be core charges, while the two x $250 batteries will just be getting broke in.

>>
>>978742
Fucking stingray is objectly the worst fish to fight ever. They just abuse their body shape and fuck you over by just digging into the sand. If you don't have the line and drag tough enough to lift them out of the ocean bottom then you are SOL. Not only that, they give you can give you a nasty sting when you land them and trying to unhook. They can get very big and heavy that need to up to at least 50 LB + line and you might hook on one anytime.

Everything else is pretty good though.
