try fishing trout magnets,
my favorate colors are bumblebee, chartruce ,
and best of all green with red flake

it might be worth buying a kit and trying out colors

you can drift them under a float or toss them and free line them

My biggest trout ever was on a natural color trout slayer (the little crawdad ones) on a 1/32 jighead. I like to trim off a leg from each side, cut a couple mm of length from the tail, and shorten the antennae. They get bites from just about everything, bluegill, pikeminnows, bass, trout, even a bullhead one time.

95% of the time you get a decent size nest, they are pretty easy to get untangled. The other 4.9% of the time it takes a little patience. And then that 0.1% of the time you get a big nest, you might have to cut some.

But I like to grab braid on sale so it's normally $20-$25 for a 300yd+ spool. That means there's maybe $10 worth of line on there. If you have to cut off a ton, you can just tie more on if it is far enough down where you won't be casting the knot. And memecasters aren't like spinning reels where you need to fill them to capacity to get a good cast. If you lose 30yds and have to run 90yds instead of 120yds, that would wreck the casting distance on a spinning combo but doesn't really do anything noticeable on the casting reels.

funny thing is pink and white slays them for some reason. i hit them with a drop of mikes or procure scent. caught a few smallies with them too.
>>
>>951120
I buy line like once every 15-20 years. You have lost more loose change in your vehicle than I make in a year I'm sure. A memecaster would be both a pain and massive resource drain for me.

I've never really had trouble with spinning reels regardless of how much line remains on them. I don't shore fish on an ocean either.
>>
>>951122
It's like grubs tho too. They just can't resist the movement. Looks like some sort of natural protein food for fish.

>>951118

Man, you really need some fresh line. When I finally do my taxes I will send you a spool of PowerPro if Uncle Sam lets me have some of my money back.

But like I said, in the couple years since I have been using the baitcasters (a lot more over the past year) I have only had one nest that required me to cut some line off. I go fishing multiple times a week too, so that is a lot of casts. And I probably could've untangled that one but I remember it was a hot ass summer afternoon and I just didn't want to deal with it. Normally it ends up being one little loop of line you need to loosen up and everything comes out fine.

I'm gonna send you some braid anyway and you will be buying line again because you will want it on all your reels.

And idk how the fuck you guys don't change line more. Unless you keep the reels stored in a freezer and go fishing once every year. Mono get so shitty so fast if you actually use it. I mean if all your rods have old ass line and you never have fresh line to compare it too, maybe it just seems normal for 10lb line to break at 3lbs and cast like a slinky.

Use reel covers and keep your line out of the sun and heat of a vehicle. The only problem I have with new line is line memory for mono. I have to cast it a bunch to get that sorted out then it is good to go. Though, I only use mono for leaders now, so that isn't much of a concern anymore. Old line doesn't tend to do that.

you wouldnt want those in the usa. theyre the type of fish that would eat a kid or small dog or some shit..way tougher than musky or pike.
it would be around you and your weather that they would survive. though i think they need a river source. mississippi river delta would work well also.

Do you put a sink above or below a swivel? I've been getting mixed answers with no real reason.

You can do either of honestly it just depends on your rig.
When I fish a Carolina rig the bullet weight is above the swivel with a bead underneath it to protect the knot, but fishing a drop shot rig on the bottom the weight is on the bottom of the leader

First of all, only ones they have on sale are the Sashimis for $9.99, but those are on clearance anyway. That's what I got a couple weeks ago when they had em on sale for $5 if you buy at least 2 or 3.

And the other part, I doubt it is really resalers. The sales are always "$5ea when you buy 4 or more!" and most Dick's only have a small selection of them anyway. So the first weekend of the sale, if two or three people who like Yo-Zuris see it and buy 4 or 8 lures, they are almost wiped out.

Smart thing to do would be to try and get a "rain check" and come back after the sale ends when they actually have a good selection.

Dick's has a much better selection than Walmart but not nearly as good as Bass Pro or Gander Mtn. But they have the best sales on lure, especially newer stuff sometimes. When Shadow Raps first came out, Dick's had em on sale like 4 for $20 a bunch. And most stores have a little clearance section with some steals.

They also have lots of cheaper generic shit like those Jawbone cranks and spinners and Mizuo hardbaits for $2-$3. Plus they are cheaper when it comes to basic stuff like line and hooks where Bass Pro and Cabela's try to rip you off. 300yd Power Pro spools are $33-$34 at BPS and Cabela's at regular price and Dick's has em for $27.99.

It's not always the first place I go to buy tackle but I like to stop by every couple weeks to see what is on sale.

Do you ever go to yard sales, garage sales, or thrift shops? Sometimes they have really great prices on barely used stuff. Estate sales are the best.

>>

Nah. If I drive past a garage sale I will creep down the street and see if there are any fishing rods. But pawn shops always seem to overprice their shit considering it is used and most of the time it is either really expensive reels that are old as fuck or almost new stuff that is cheap shit. And they are like 90% of new retail. Like I will see a pawn shop ad online for some $500 Penn reel. It is the 1997 model and they want $400 for it when I could go to Bass Pro and get the 2017 model for $499.

People I know who fish wit them will put it on a size 6, 8, or 10 octopus or mosquito style hook on a carolina rig and cast it out into the reservoir, let it sit. If you are using them in a smaller stream maybe you want to try just a split shot or maybe even rig it on a 1/16 jig head like >>951696 said. That should be a can of diet coke. I like the Rippin Rap tho.

And the beauty of 4chan is that you only have to fill out the name field once and it stays up there!

>>952053
Lol I would never claim that one. When I started smoking in high school, I was still playing water polo and it wasn't so much the physical endurance that suffered but the I could notice my lungs getting fucked within like a year. But it's the breathing, not quite the same as endurance. If you are doing something physical where you aren't brething super heavy like sprinting 5mi, it won't mess with you much. But you will be dying after that sprint.
>>
>>952056
Nobody denied that it's bad for you, but to say it decreases your stamina is wrong. It can decrease your oxygen flow, but smokers have bigger lungs anyways and literally just smoke weed and then your oxygen flow is back to normal
>>952053 If I wanted to lie would of said a lot more than 1.5 miles so you can suck my cock, also a lot of marathon runners around the world smoke cigarettes before during and after to help them train, so learn about culture, kid.

I think I'd much rather just travel around with a small dome tent, rocket stove w/roll-up flashing chimney, twig fuel, sonar, spud chisel, foam mat, and fishing equipment. Pretty much everything that can fit into and onto a frame backpack. I'd just make a few tiny holes for the sonar to peak into then setup over where ever there's a good result. Then pickup and move as soon as things simmer down at one spot.

I have seen those things before but I always just run single underspins. How heavy are they and what line are you running? Even with braid that floats, the 1/8oz underspins will normally go bretty deep.

If those are 1/16oz jigs, maybe you need to up it to 1/8oz. Flourocarbon line will make em run deeper too compared to mono. And if you want to buy the wire and underspins and make your own, they make ones with willow blades. Willow blades cause a little less vibration than those Colorado blades but they run deeper.

Ehh, the guides are always on the same side as the reel seat. It would work but the grip might be different and spinning rods won't have the trigger. Spinning rods also have bigger guides but that won't really mess with it. Putting a spinning reel on a casting rod, you might have issues with the smaller guides.

But speaking of spinning reels. I bought some Suffix Y6 and it's extremely stiff. I know it'll soften up after a day on the water, but damn.
>>
>>953013
Yeah that's what I thought originally but too lazy to find the other anon's post so was just replying to the one post.

Only thing is that spincast rods sometimes have that pistol grip but it should be fine.

Also I feel like half the time somebody on here says "spincast" they are really talking about a spinning reel. This website is 18+, nobody between the ages of 8 and 80 uses spincast reels except for that one Zebco fag.

I found this washed up on the shore of a rarely traveled bit of Lake Huron. Would anyone here happen to know what it is + any idea on what time period it's from? The only things I can find online that resemble it are cedar fishing net buoys, but the largest I've come across are 9 inches. This is between 14 and 15 inches long. Any ideas?

It's not like I'm a fisheries biologist or anything

The pond is overrun with golden shiners

Should've just ordered them online weeks ago. At least I replaced one I lost. Finally gave in and grabbed a Clackin Rap. That one is 5/8oz and should launch on the memecasters. And then decided to get another Bagley even tho I don't really care much for the first one.

And as far as I can tell, Gander Mtn doesn't carry a single inline spinner. Last year after Xmas, they had a bunch of Mepps on clearance. I was looking through the panfish aisles and spinner aisles and all over the place but I guess kids these days are more interested in $20 Livingston lures than good ol' Mepps.

Google public land out there like national forest or park and then look up fishing regulations or stock schedules in those zones. Each river and waterway likely has different regulations for trout

Wow, you have a lot of options then. The sierras have some amazing brook trout lakes as well as brown and rainbow trout. Many of the higher lakes will be frozen right now but there is plenty of open water as well if that is what you are looking for. Yosemite National Park and Stanislaus National Forest are the two closest areas to Santa Cruz, should be about a 3hr drive. I'm sure there are other places but since you want to camp as well as fish I would focus on the mountains/foothills since they are a nice place to camp.
>>
>>953871

Are lakes a good bet for numbers? Cause my friend is down to do some hardcore shit like going for 3 days, bringing 1 day's worth of food and using our catch as the food for the other days? Apparently he's done shit like this a lot with his brother up in Idaho. Would be down to camp near a river or streams and creeks.

I went down to the river today to test some lure designs to see how they act through thick weeds and such. All good results. Better than expected. Then I spotted this about 5 feet over my head (flood water height.)
>>
>>953977
>5ft above
Damn. That's crazy to think you would've been in 10'+ of water.
>>
>>953977
>>953997
I hope that just floated into the tree. Anyone dumb enough to cast a crank into a submerged tree like that deserves to loose their lure.
>>
>>954023
Shit happens tho. I almost lost a Rapala Skitter Pop yesterday because I was trying to cast along the shoreline and the wind was catching my line and dragging it into this one branch that was hanging over the water. I was trying to pull the line down as soon as possible but the braid is so light that it just floats with the wind.

If that was flood water height tho, I'm guessing the crank was snagged somewhere else and the high water caught it and pulled it downstream.

I mean it was this little dock type thing, maybe boardwalk describes it better, right on the water where you can fish or sight see. The railing was like 3.5ft high. I was doin one of the memecaster sidearm casts where you have to throw it fast and flat and was trying to get it way out past these weeds. Right as I'm bringing the rod forward and relasing my thumb, it smashed into the wood at mach sebile. I think pretty much any plastic lure like that would've broken, especially considering those things are heavy. It was hard enough to knock the glued on red eyes off.

And the thing didn't crack in half right when I hit it. The eyelet with the split ring where you tie it on got ripped out and the body was a little loose and then I ripped the thing in half after to see what was inside there.

And I think that was the same lure I was fishing a couple weekends ago at night at this one spot with a rocky drop where I fish from. Since it was dark and I couldn't see, I was popping it out of the water before it got too shallow and snagged so it was flying into the rocks at a good speed. Held up to that well.
>>
>>953997
Yeah, flood waters are usually 15' high along the river at max.

>>954023
It did. Looks like it was from last spring. Floods haven't been that high this winter, but spring is usually the big floods. No one boats in this area of the river and no one walks through since everything is private property.

I was talking with some coworkers the other day, and these two dudes were fishing in the Keys a few months back. They were on the bridges like pic related where there is the main bridge for the road and then a second one that is a bike path and people fish from it. The one dude hooked a grouper, and it was a fatty where he didn't want it hanging on the line flopping around while in the air and break off or get caught on anything and they didn't have any way to land it with a net or from shore. Some shit like that, I foget exactly. So like full force, as soon as he gets it near the bridge and out of the water, he yanks the the thing real hard just to try and whip it up onto that bike path bridge. He went a little too hard, the fish went flying over their heads, over the other side of the bridge behind them, and broke off and he lost it.

People who ONLY fly fish are 100% old men who have trust funds backing them and pay guides to tie every tippet, line, hook on, etc etc and act superior because of it.

Guys who only fly fish are basically the tweed wearing golfers of the ocean, lake, and river. They act like it's a sport but any sport you can weigh 300 pounds and be shuffled around in a cart or boat by a minority you pay for and drink booze while doing is not a sport. Fishing is a sport in the same way video games are a sport. They both just require knowledge and experience, not massive physical skill. No one is running sprints or getting tackled fishing. Maybe reeling in monster sharks is a workout but still. You will never do it enough to get in shape.

The real issue is that guys who only fly fish talk about how much of challenge it is but it's really only a challenge because they can't cast well. If you can cast well its as easy as normal artificial fishing especially with the super well done fly and bait fish imitations they make these days. These people fly fishing 10 times a year and say it's hard because they never do it enough to actually become competent. Guys even tie on live bait and fly cast it and say they caught their permit on a fly rod. It's a joke.
