I really need to get out fishin this weekend.

Still waiting for help with the beginner guides on the Pastebin. I put a little saltwater one in there, but I want to do a river one possibly. Skid typed up a saltwater guide so enjoy the autism and CAbaymang just a trout one.

Thinking about picking up a new hobby? Want to get a memecaster? Haven't mastered the Palomar knot? Click here!

This Jerry-rigged dust collector is better than expected. It uses water to help cut down on fine dust. I just need to modify it a bit and add an exhaust filter. The vacuum also runs off the pedal power. Soon I'll be able to make tons of wooden lures with ease and less mess.

It is a coppice off one of my peach trees. The 1st season, young shoots like this have a tiny pith hole in the center. No need to drill in order to slide the wire through for making poppers/hula dancers/jerkbaits.

>>929470
Layer up. Merino wool base layer is amazing stuff.
>>
>>929476
i always layer up, never am cold icefishing ( trick is wearing rain bibs as an outer layer to cut the wind)
though i dont have warm enough boots, one pair is leather and waterproof for a few hours of walking through slush but then feet start to get wet
other pair is slightly less insulated rubber boots, that keep feet dry but colder

also agree with the whole farming thing, i help out on a farm on weekends for extra cash
when i not working at the fish hatchery

what do you grow? or just everything?

I wear tennis shoes with very thick merino wool socks. I'm usually good to go down to -10F that way, out in the wind. I'll probably get some Oros stuff to test out for next winter ice fishing. Unless these terribly warm winters are now the trend.

>what do you grow?

Too many things to list; Veggies, fruit trees, berries, fungi, chickens.

Any NYfags know how to re-print out my fishing license? When I bought it online the system took me to a webpage where I could download and print it but I didn't save the .pdf. My paper license has since become a worn-out and torn piece of wrinkled paper.
>>
>>929484
youre fucked, i you dont save it oh well

you may be able to go online and plug in your conservation id ( if you know it or can read it from your old license) and re print it

or in my state i can look it up by my name address etc
>>
>>929484
Put your next on in a small ziploc bag, sized just large enough for it where you can fit it in your wallet.

My states says "F-U" for license replacements. They want more money and here you have to buy a full price replacement.

Tight baselayer, thick insulation layer, wind-breaking outer layer. Find out what the coldest it will be when you are fishing including wind chill factor. Yes, cotton can go over baselayer, but you should have something between the baselayer and say cotton jeans. Wind breakers are a must normally.
>>
>>929560
When it's cold as fuck I wear this

Wool socks
2 pairs thermal leggings
Thermal shirt
Long sleeve shirt
1/4 zip fleece
Cotton hoodie

And the most important part;
Carhart bibs and a nice ski jacket/coat.

What temp are you lookin at? Shit freezes quick at 0 degrees so you don't get as wet as you'd think.

Make sure your boots are waterproof!!!!

It's not a big deal. I loose mine all the time. If you get stopped they have the ability to verify if you have a license even if you don't have it on you. If they give you a ticket the guy is being a huge fag

>>929560
Depends on the temp and wind. It's always better to wear more than enough and then shed layers if you warm up. I always start with thick wool socks, light thermal pants or pajama pants, tee-shirt or long sleeve shirt on top, sometimes both. For an outer layer I wear a heavy two layer wind resistent and waterproof jacket. Same goes for the pants or bibs, the big thing is making sure they are wind and water resistent since that's the main contributor for you being cold. As for gloves there a shit ton of different ones so it's just what ever you like more. It's really not hard to stay warm on the Ice, especially if you have a shanty to eliminate the wind

Final version of the micro lathe is complete! Turns out that 2 Pringles cans are perfect for sandwiching a filter between. Now there's almost no dust at all.

After I get some paints and clear coats I'll start making plugs. I don't need the blanks sitting around drawing moisture and cracking/checking or something.

That's like space tech compared to here. I had to help the people behind the desk when I got mine. They couldn't figure out the website (and they had visible virus I had to inform them about). If I lose it, I will need to buy another one.

Personally, I think it's not that great unless you're doing some kind of jigging or trying to find the depth, even then most I've seen with ot tend to fade fairly quick and isn't as vibrant at that point.

Depends on if you can justify havering rainbow line, but personally I think multi-colored briad in any form looks cool on reels, especially if they don't have a levelwind

Yeah the Curado probably has nicer bearings, but the Citica still feels really smooth. I was casting around with it a bit in the yard and I think I'm gonna like it.
My only complaint is the spool tension knob feels like plastic or really cheap metal. That doesn't make a real difference though, so whatever.

I did. It's on my list to get, but I didn't think it would offer a big enough advantage to the Citica for me to spend the extra $100 right now. Plus I think the Citica looks damn good on this rod.

Sheeit that was a long shot. Dudes a stud.

I did when I was like 13, went to a tackle shop in Galveston and thought "I can catch 5 fish at once on the beach!" As I had no idea what they were actually for.

Needless to say, I didn't catch shit with them and never used one again until I was older and knew what they were for. Still prefer just using a cast net, trap, chumming, or combination of the above.

Or I just put a couple tiny ass hooks on a line and bait them with squid. Less of a hassle.

Here is the handle and reel seat all epoxied on. I used masking tape to create an arbor for the reel seat. 3 rolls of like inch thick tape around the blank to seat the reel seat snug, epoxy and then the seat.

The handle i sanded to the shape i wanted with varying grits of sandpaper.

Im using fuji BYAG alconite guides spaced with their recommended specs.

Im hoping to finish wrapping the guides today, and epoxy tomorrow. I will update with the finished guides.

I do better with chartruese in clear water than I do in really murky water. Dark blues and blacks like Junebug work best for me in murky water. If naturals aren't working great in clear water, I switch to chartruese and start landing em. It realy works well in water that is clear but stained brown.

I've told the story a couple times that I never touched firetiger and chartruese back in the day, always natural stuff. Then dude at a bait shop down here said peacocks like bright stuff so I started stocking up and the largemouth were going crazy for it.

Mueller is nice. It's catch and release only with the exception of the trout they stock. Many of the bass get pretty big since they're more likely to be released and get to eat trout.

If you don't mind driving south, Lake Bastrop offers some alright bass and catfishing, but Buescher park in Smithville often produces 10+ lbs bass and is small enough that you can access a surprising amount of it from the bank.

And if you can pull it off, the Applied Materials facility on 290 has a couple of ponds on the property with some damn nice bass and catfish in them. You have to be an employee to fish there, but I've snuck out there a couple of times anyway and never seen anyone else fish them.

Use a larger net. Scoop the fish into the net tail first. That keeps the lure out of the net for longer as most of the fish enters before the lure enters.

>>930871
Making plastic baits is more expensive than most other types of lures, if you buy kits. Some people use caulking guns and silicone caulking. It is pretty simple and if you learn how to make the molds you are golden. You can then make all manner of new designs. You can make 1 part pour molds and 2 part injection molds. Injection molds using silicone caulking take FOREVER to cure due to lack of air reaching them. 1 part molds are better for that.

>>930876
>>930892
They are amazing. Use them in clear water mostly. The colors that have worked best for me, on that chart are #03, #20, and #32. 1/4oz I think. I catch bluegill, sunfish, and black bass on them.

pouring plastics is easy. you can learn by doing remelts in the microwave. toss a few worms in a pyrex cup, heat to 300 and pour. you can use ground crayons to tint the plastic.
small stuff is a pain in a top pour. especially little appendages which always require cleaning the flash off of, unless using a 2 part mold with a injector. i would make a quick copy of them using plaster of paris, you could make a top pour mold of a dozen of those pretty easy. in a top pour there is usually a flat side. so a little modification in needed but those would be super easy to replicate.

>>930895
you can accelerate the caulk drying time by adding water to it. caulking molds suck though.
repeat molten plastic poured into them they begin to brittle up. he would be better off using plaster or buying a small silicone mold kit at micheals for $15. those lures are tiny so he could easily fit a bunch onto the mold kits tray. super simple to make.

cool popper btw
>>
>>930911
>caulking molds suck though

I mean making a mold from something else and using silicone caulking as the worm material, colored with paint.

>you can accelerate the caulk drying time by adding water to it

Nice to know. I do that with super glue; moisten one side to it instantly sticks.

Everything in pic related is handmade hand painted etc
Not by me but by an old guy I ice fish with
Top ones with the beads work well for dead sticking
Perch seam to love them as do pickerel

Normal jigs work for everything
The small ones on the right middle with the dangly hooks are a must have for crappie fishing
The free swinging hook allows a deeper hookup so you don't lose them due to their thin mouths
Larger ones on the right are good for throwing on a backup rod and pounding much to stir it up and attract fish
The larger dangly ones also seem to work well for bass

I mean no disrespect with this question, but why do you guys like fishing?

I've done it about twice as a kid and I don't really remember the experience. I realize there's some important part of the appeal that I'm missing, so I hope some of you guys might provide a better answer than my mere guessing.

Is it the thrill of catching something alive?

Do you enjoy the physical feedback of pulling and reeling in a fish?

Or more broadly, is it about the challenge and struggle of finding and catching a bigger fish, a better adversary?

Do you enjoy learning more and seeing your own progress over time?

Similarly, is it about comparing your catches?

Is it part of another interest like cooking?

Do you do it socially; was it already important to other people in your life?

I know everyone has different reasons for their hobbies. I guess what I'm asking is: why is this one yours?

The adrenaline rush when something huge hits your line/bait/lure and you hear drag screaming...

Plus they match the rod
>>

That looks bretty gud. I would be down with a Daiwa reel since I don't own one yet. Almost grabbed one of their Excelcer or whatever reels when Dick's had them for $45 but it was only 4000 or 4500 size and I wasn't trying to set up a big catfish rod. Coulda used it for salt but whatever.
>>
>>930850

I always go head first since fish almost never swim backwards.

But I don't use a lot of treble hooks and don't worry too much about the hook getting tangled in the net. Rubber netting helps cut down on that anyway.
>>
>>931217

>>
>>931003

I like fishing because I like observing animals. I also birdwatch, collect spiders and insects, reptiles and amphibians, and even chase down the occasional armadillo or other critter. You only usually see these animals from afar, and I enjoy getting an up close and personal look at them and gaining a better understanding of their way of life. It's like stepping into a whole other sometimes alien world. This is especially true when fishing, as their environment is nothing like our own and when you're saltwater fishing, there's no telling what you'll pull up.

I also just like the natural beauty of nature. It's very serene and calming for me.

And then there's the no small degree of personal pride in being able to do something well. Anyone can sit in one spot and soak bait until something happens along, but being able to consistently find fish, select the right bait, present it correctly, and land the specific species (or even specific sized specimen) you want takes skill and effort.

I do enjoy cooking, but have never been a big fan of fish. I only really tried cooking new fish recently only to discover that while I still dislike most fish, I absolutely love Redfish and shark. Knowing how to catch and prepare fresh caught fish for those who do like it is something I take pride in though.

All in all, I see fishing as a way of exploring the natural world and a craft to be perfected.

I have few hobbies in common with my family and coworkers aside from fishing/hunting/camping, which has become our common activity/language and also handily communicates to them that I'm not some snotty elitist.

I was told that when fishing in the cold, fish are "lead shy" For example, you'd want to use the jig on the top in pic related so that the tube can come over it. While the bottom one actually loses more since they feel the hard head of the jig.

Agree or disagree in this myth?
>>
>>931446
Could be true. Fish def hang on to soft baits (especially scented stuff like Gulp) much longer than hard baits. I can be fishing a 4" Rapala and 4" Gulp minnow the exact same way and a fish will hit the Rapala sometimes and spit it out before you can set the hook while there is a good chance the same fish will hit the tail of the Gulp and won't get hooked initially until they hit again and try to swallow the whole thing.
>>
>>931446
>>931455
Also this is moreso true with panfish like bluegill because of how they hit prey. Bass will swallow the whole bait on the first strike so they get hooked before they can spit out the hard baits. Bluegill like to nip at the end of a bait and take off with it before they try to swallow it. So if you are using a little inline spinner or crank, they could nip at the side of the lure instead of the hook and they will notice it is hard plastic or metal and spir it out right away. If the same thing happens with a soft bait that is salty and scented, they will hang onto it and try to eat the whole thing a second later and you have a better chance of setting the hook and catching them.

I use wood bits for a single-speed Dremel (variable-speed models have overheating issues with high torque projects) to remove the bulk of the wood. You can see the main bit I use in the top left photo of >>929411
near the screwdriver handle. It works for poppers and the ones pictured. The bit in the Dremel in that photo is the one I use for the eyes. Then I use 60grit, 80grit, 150grit, 320 grit, and 1500grit sandpaper strips to touch it up. 1 lure takes about 5 mins to go from tree limb to lure blank. Most of the time is sanding. The wood I'm using now (maple) has been seasoned for about 3 years (old tool handle woods are nice hardwoods that are well seasoned you can use too). After that, several coats of baselayer then layers of paint built up to form whatever patterns I think I want. Then several clear coats. The clear coats I'm playing with, seeing which works best. Looks like I'll need to order some, "Devcon Two Ton Epoxy" for the clear coat, for best results.

They may look detailed, but it isn't difficult. Just use laying, meshes/screens, and stencils. I haven't even made any stencils yet. I don't have an airbrush yet, so I'm using cheap acrylic paint with a brush and spray paint. Sealing with a good clear coat is a must for those types of paints, they don't like getting wet.

Never heard of it. Does it support raised beds, hugelkultur, companion planting, composting, no-till method, fungiculture, and/or ollas irrigation? Most games don't even have Mittleider System basics and are centered around medieval farming methods and industrial farming methods. They do often support Square Foot Gardening method simply because of their blocky nature.

Today's chores will be epoxying the remaining micro lures, adding their hardware then making chain out of old fence wire to hang up more grow lights. Seedlings need to be started next month, but chickweed and lambs quarter sown into the soil has already started sprouting ahead of schedule. But, those are for indoor food over winter anyway. The garlic tops are a bit behind schedule though.
>>
>>932305
Kek, if I'm trying to untangle something long like that I will either walk backwards to keep it tight or position it so the wind will take it clear across the water or grass so it doesn't get tangled.

And it seems like with the memecasters, the lighter they are (and often more expensive), they are more sensitive to bad casts or not having the tension and brakes just right. But then when you get it dialed in for those specific conditions, it will cast a mile.
>>
>>932323
Yeah I felt absolutely retarded for not stretching it or spooling it onto something.

>the lighter they are (and often more expensive), they are more sensitive to bad casts or not having the tension or brakes just right

I think I was reading somewhere that lighter spools are more prone to back lash (?) so that might be it. I think I'm just spoiled by my Revo STX because I have all the brakes off and the tension really loose and I barely have to thumb it on cast.

Also, in the manual for the Shimano it said to use the braking system for backlash at the beginning of the cast, and the spool tension for backlash at the end. This seems backwards to me, but that's what I did on that Quantum and it was casting like a dream so I don't know.

I'm still getting used to that lefty Lew's. Feels a little odd bedause I switch around between two right handed reels and the Lew's. After you cast, you still have to movr your hand to palm the reel. Plus the Lew's is 6'10" I think instead of 6'6" and the reel shape is a bit different so it feels weird compared to the Abus.

>>932327
Does the Shimano have centrifugal brakes? Because that makes sense to use the brakes for backlash in the first part of the cast. The faster the spool is moving (like right as you cast), the more the brakes will engage. As the bait loses speed right before it hits the water, centrifugal brakes barely engage at all.

I mostly just tune the spool tension based on the weight of the lure and then set the brakes based on the wind and the profile of the lure. For example a big 1/2oz walking bait like a Spook will get a lot more brakes than a 1/2oz Rat-L-Trap since the wind resistance is going to slow down the spook much more than the Rat-L-Trap.

I just remembered that Lew's has magnetic and centrifugal like the STX and I haven't even used the centrifugal.

Palomar. Easy to tie and probably the strongest. All you really need for tying on hooks, lures, swivels, etc.

For tying line to line (like leaders) I like the "Double Uni" or "Uni-Uni" knot because I can tie them well and smooth but I know lots of others like the FG.

And then if you need to tie a loop on line, the "Surgeon's Loop" is all you need. I will often tie Texas rigs and other leaders and do a Surgeon's Loop at the end so I can attach them to the main line with a snap swivel (because I'm lazy).
>>
>>932595
>Does the Shimano have centrifugal brakes?
Yeah it does. Now that I've been thinking about it, it makes more sense. The spool tension knob is basically feathering the spool for you when you have it to where the lure slowly falls. I guess for some reason I thought the spool would get faster as he cast went further, but then I realized that didn't make much sense.

bass and trout love them. If there are aggressive fish in the area they will hit it. Normally though, if I don't get bet on them in the first 10 casts I move to another bait and this typically means the fish are slightly less aggressive and are feeding on their preferred bait like shad, eggs, and/or flys.

When you cast you start the spool spinning at an extremely fast rate. The spool will keep spinning at a faster speed than your line comes out due to drag on your line. This causes a backlash at the start of the cast. The breaks allow you to set it so that your spool doesn't over spin, think steadily giving you car gas in the rain vs. punching the gas.

When you lure hits the water your line rapidly stops put your spool doesn't causing a backlash at the end. The tension makes it want to quickly stop once it no longer has that pull on it. Think slamming your cars breaks with ABS vs without.

Spool tension can cause excess wear on your parts and should be used sparingly. Learn to stop the spool with your thumb right before the lure hits.

You asked for this.
>>
>>932801
Yeah idk why I couldn't grasp that the spool was spinning fastest at the start.

>Learn to stop the spool with your thumb right before the lure hits.
I've been doing this, but I was getting back lash in the last 3/4 of the cast, and I know it's because I'm pretty garbage at feathering the spool sometimes. im spoiled by that Abu I swear.

>>932828
>Fluoro

But that would've happened if I had braid on there instead

I've got mono on all my big baitcasters that I use for catfish, never had any real issues with it.

I live between Austin and Houston and make semi-regular trips to the gulf from late spring to fall. Usually around Port Lavaca, Indianola, and Matagorda.

>>931811

Ladybird Lake is the most common spot in Austin, but there's always a shitload of people out on it. There's a lot of smaller lakes though. Mueller Park has some good catch and release bass fishing and stocks trout in the winter and channel catfish all other times of the year.

Lake Travis is actually a nice place to fish. I only went out there for a cookout and did some fishing, but I caught several bass, channel cats, and drum on sunfish I caught with a cast net. Apparently it's got good and striped bass fishing too.

And there's Walter E. Long, Pflugerville, and lots of creeks and smaller park ponds to fish.

Like >>931848 said, Buescher is a great place to fish. It's down south in Smithville, but it's never too crowded, only allows non-powered boats, and you can reach a good chunk of it from shore. It also produces several monster bass every year, as they eat the stocked trout.

Lakes Bastrop is also nearby. The nearby powerplant keeps the water warm year round, and the bass and catfishing is decent. You really need a boat of some kind to appreciate it though, as shore access is limited to two boat launch/camping areas.

Up north, Granger lake is well known for all species of catfish. A boat helps here as well.

If you really want to fish, head east on 290 for a couple hours and hit up Somerville. Great bass fishing, excellent catfishing, winter whitebass/crappie runs, and even some stripers. Plenty of parks and an accessible spillway. My favorite place to fish, although a little crowded at peak times.

I'm itching to go down to lake Caleveras outside SA. It apparently has a native freshwater redfish population in addition to plenty of white bass and catfish.

I think you're right about that. The more I look at other stuff, I keep thinking about that Revo. The Shimano shill will shit on it, but I think I'm going to tell everybody to buy Revos if they want a memecaster. There's probably a reason why everybody buys them and they have so many different models from like $120 up to $400+.

Those look neat though. I bet the tail comes off super easy. it always seems like when lures go from one color to another one it's almost like its two separate pieces moulded together if that makes sense.

They might have had them for awhile but I have never seen them in stores. I was just going thru the Bass Pro "New Products" pages. Maybe just a new color.

And yeah, the tails do pull off easier. I rarely have issues with it though. Panfish love to grab the chartruese tails but normally let go before they could break it off.

You can buy cases for them.
>>
>>933040
>>933042

I've flown with them before (7 ft 2 piece) and have a container. And they did let me carry it on (also with a backpack )
But the thinge is it depended on who was at the gate checking luggage I had some people give me shit and I basically told them to fuck off

The issue with my surf rod(s)
Is that they are 8 and 11 ft respectively
Meaning even if I take them in half they will be 4 and 5.5 feet sections
And that's too large to fit in the overhead compartments I think

Also my rods have eyelets too big to go in th case I have
So I would have to make one out of a larger diameter PVC and line the inside with something somewhat padded
Even though I usually wrap my rods in pillow cases or shirts or something before stuffing them into the carrier

Where at? I'm assuming relatively close to Austin.

Better than lews? Worse? Comparably?

I throw lizards with 1/8oz weights on there routinely and it's fine. That reel is on a MH so the rod doesn't load up all the way so my distance is hindered a bit.
Not like super short cast or anything just less than with like a medium or ML rod.

And for the lews I don't really know. I've thrown weightless senkos on it fine, but I mostly use it for jerks and lipless cranks. Throws the lighter jerk baits pretty good.

I don't see why they wouldn't fit unless you got huge snaps and tiny jigheads. I don't even know what size mine are but I like them because they are half the size of a similar snap swivel and have less potential failure points. The small ones are good when I'm running panfish stuff because they are much less noticeable on a 2" Rapala or 1/16oz jig head.

pick up some football shakyheads and some straight 4-6 inch worms

How do I catch mullet on a line at night? Those, some gar, and catfish are all I see out at night.

Tips for catching Jack? I've tried various lures, some artificial shrimp, and some spoons. I've casted past them, cast out in front of them, and just casted. Nothing.
>>
>>933257
I'm lazy and switch out lures a lot. I also don't retie my stuff nearly enough. I try and keep an eye on the line tho but with 2lb bass on 20lb braid, a good knot will last some time.

>>933252
All I know about Chicago lake fishing is sometimes people go for steelhead and bigger lake trout n shit up by Montrose Harbor but it always seemed like such a terrible place to fish.

I would probably just get a 6'6" M rod with a ~3000 size reel and 8lb-10lb mono and see what bites.
>>
>>933279

Live shrimp.

Not dead shrimp. Biggest live shrimp on the smallest hook you got and no weight on the line.
>>
>>933279
in the morning throw top water plugs and wake baits. anything that makes a commotion on the surface. live bait is always good if can get it but a dead bait on a popping cork can bring them in too.

+1. The folded plates on regular snap swivels def cause problems but the swivel part is a weak link as well. Plus if you are just trying to swap lures out faster, there is no need for the swivel most of the time so you might as well just use the fast snaps.

My favorite part is still how much smaller they are. And they are strong enough to use a panfish sized snap for heavy bass tackle. They are less visible on small tackle and less prone to getting tangled in lures like inlne spinners and topwater baits with trebles.

What is it like going out on your average charter fishing trip?

Me and my dad are going to one with some extended family probably in March and just wondering what it's going to be like.

Not that I would care but my biggest worry is that we're gonna be out there for at least four hours and wind up getting skunked.

And how much "freedom" will their be? I'm guessing they will rig everything up to the extent and help reel in fish.
>>
>>934009
Went out on a "charter" on a freshwater lake twice. The dude let us choose if we wanted to troll for muskeye or cast lures or fish worms. First trip we trolled and did lures and I landed a nice muskeye from trolling. He helped land the muskeye and tied everything on and made sure we knew what to do (spoon fed me as well). Second trip we did worms and he rigged them for us without anyone asking, he helped get fish off the hook if they were being difficult for my young cousin. I imagine the charter will do just about anything you need or ask of him
>>
>>934009
Also our guy knew spots where we would absolutely catch fish even if they were just large perch or sunnies, I'm sure your man will have a backup plan.
