Bringin back these hoes. 'Tis the season.

Still waiting for help with the beginner guides on the Pastebin. I put a little saltwater one in there, but I want to do a river one possibly. Skid typed up a saltwater guide so enjoy the autism and CAbaymang just did a trout one.

There is a 5yr one for FL and I think it runs $75 instead of $17.50/yr.

But running to Walmart once a year to get a new one isn't a big deal. Plus FL's license is good for a full 365 days. I remember IL always started March 1 or something so if you were to buy a year license in Nov 2016, it would still expire at the end of Feb 2017.
>>
>>920326
I think they are normally cheap if you get them when you are young too so it is a good thing to buy your kids.

>I remember IL always started March 1 or something so if you were to buy a year license in Nov 2016, it would still expire at the end of Feb 2017.

Yep, I never bought one this year because I didn't get back into fishing a few months ago. So, yeah, I've been breaking the law for a few months but its chill. I know the consequences but god dammit if you want people to follow the rules then fix your broken system.

Its just typical IL bullshit. Try your hardest to get the citizens in trouble so you can collect the money.

Yeah, there's a river patrol that tries to fuck with me sometimes but I usually just walk away when the start pulling in towards shore. Until I get my license I mostly only fish off shore on hidden ponds.

Is it cheaper if you are under 18 or 16?

If I ever have a kid, I will def get them one of these when they are young. And even the adult one isn't too bad if you hunt and fish, especially since it has those stamps. I bet it would pay for itself in 10yrs or less.

>>
>>920452
Yeah you probably have a lot more spots up there too compared to closer to the city. But it would be nice to have a boat in the Chain O' Lakes.

My old neighbor, his Grandpa (who has a cabin on a lake in Northern WI) had a friend who had a house right on the Fox River somewhere up there near McHenry. We would go there almost every Saturday morning and just set out a bunch of rods with river rigs and fathead minnows. Get tons of walleye and a bit of everything else and then his grandpa would clean them all and fry em up for dinner on Sunday night.

I think his grandpa is still kickin but he real old and now my friend pretty much took over that cabin. I would love to go up there again.

Most places like that are pretty good for mid-range fish. The people that do fish it are normally not very experienced and are there more to drink beer and relax than fish. Thus, those locations are rarely overfished. A big plus is all the man-made cover.

I owned one for a long time as a child; until someone stole it. telescoping rods are pretty nice to have behind your truck seat. Just make sure to set the tightness just right to prevent the eyes from rotating or part of it collapsing into itself.

Went fishing today. My buddy caught a little 13" catfish. I missed the hookset on 2 gar that would have been fun as fuck on my light bass set up.

>>
>>920563
I dont see how this overall beats a normal rod. You're still carrying the bulky reel. and if you can stow that away on your person than surely you can stow a light rod away with some pole sticking out of the backpack.

Anons, I got a touring kayak and the previous owner has it rigged for fishing. It isn't designed for fishing, he just added a rod holder and gave me a milk crate and anchor. How exactly do folks fish out of a kayak without a live well? Do you put fish on a stringer and just pull them along? Any kayak fishing tips are helpful.
>>
>>920324
got myself an 8 year one in VA. didnt use it the first four though

>>920638
>Do you put fish on a stringer and just pull them along?

>>
>>920638
i only catch tiny ass dinks in my yak and toss them back immediately. its big enough that i can lay my gear out in front of me and select what I need when I need it. anchoring is a bitch because im lazy about it. it's a three person sit on top 14 footer or so. probably didnt help much

But mostly they where just not on today.

Nice idea! Those are like $13 for 200 on ebay.

I was just checking my storage for pipes. I want to cut some 4 inch long pieces of small diameter metal pipes that I can sharpen one end and use to cut foam to make small fly poppers.

This is the type of foam I'll be getting. I'll be able to mix and match colors,

https://www.google.com/search?q=Creativity+Street+WonderFoam+Sheets

Turns out all my pipes are copper and steel which don't work very well for this due to being too soft or too easily rusted. I'll have to pick up some brass tubing.

I live in a temperate rain forest. Steel rusts like crazy in ambient humidity without protection here. It mucks up the sides of the foam you cut with it. If the local hardware store has stainless steel tubes, I'll get that, but I know they have brass and aluminum.

i use a cut off ss golf shaft. the advantage is that they taper so you can get a few sizes of cutter out of one and the metal is thin and easy to get a sharp edge. i get them from the trash cans at my local golf course but im sure a thrift store would have them for a dollar.

The little screw cap on the other side of the body from the handle allows you to swap the handle to the left or right side of the reel. If it is loose, just tighten the cap gently.

most companies have pdf's of the breakdown of the reels. I like to use small tupperware containers to keep everything organized.
like the other anon said you can take pics too if that helps.

grease and oils are up to you..i like cals for drags, shimano reel oil, ardent butter and bearing oil..theres a lot out there to pick and choose from. If you dont service much buy shimano its the best ive used that lasts a while. you might want to check out alan tani's site as well. lots of good info about reels and customization on the forums along with lots of tutorials. also be sure to thouroly clean out the old grease. they dont mix well. other than that servicing your reels is easy af

There's this pond right off this river that ive been scanning over with google maps. (Red arrow)
And just from the fact that its so secluded is awesome; I want to fish it.
The property that covers it is that airport, and the pond is off in the trees- I doubt they care about anything beyond their tree-line.
That road is the closest option, like 2,000 feet but that means I have to walk over someone's farmland.
The option im gunning for is parking around where the bridge is north of the river and wading/hiking downstream to that pond. This is about 1.4 miles.
Should be fun, idk when im going. But I got it saved.

Anything im underlooking tho?

I think i'll be fine as long as no fences are jumped or signs are ignored.
It's not really an industrial airport it seems, just for flight school I think and folks flying for fun.

Again this is past their tree line, if im even seen, I dont think they'll mind as long as I dont step out of it.

If you don't have to hop any fences, go for it. If you do hop a fence and get caught, just plead ignorance and say you didn't even know you were so close to the airport.

Sorry, I don't do any sort of business online since it is not cost effective (because China). I also don't make standard fly patterns for the most part. You are far better off ordering things on ebay where they are ultra cheap. You can get a box of 100 flies of each kind for very cheap (from China). The closest patterns I make are bangers and sand flea/mole crabs.

I highly suggest you tie some flies yourself. It is really fun and you don't need any equipment to start off.

Check your state's consumption advisories:

http://www.deq.state.ok.us/csdnew/fish/

That will tell you the places and fish to avoid. The larger a fish is the more pollution it will have. The type of fish also plays a role. Non-stocked predator fish have the 2nd worst pollution, insectivore fish have the least pollution. Stocked fish have the worst pollution due to their pellet food diet being made of higher order predator fish.

All fish are "good eating", it is just that most people have no clue how to cook anything that isn't panfish and catfish, have palates born from "fine dining" fast food joints, or apply social classes to fish. The latter 2 of which don't matter at all when you are putting food on the plate.

-Fastest easiest food on the plate are panfish (sunfish mostly).
-Largest easiest food on the plate are channel catfish.
-Everything else needs to be specially targeted and is normally overfished due to their sport fishing status (black bass, musky, trout, shovelhead, etc).

well ill have to buy some thread and needle nose vice grips, but once i do that i guess i could go for it. how do you do it one handed though? hold the pliers with just your middle, ring, and pinky fingers and keep your index finger and thumb free for holding materials? but good idea on ebay, ill look at it, but im not sure i want 100 of each, maybe just 4 or 5 of each in a different size (more for clousers, id want two colours in each size of those, bangers im content with just white or maybe see if i can find a black one for dusk and morning
then ill need two fly lines, because i fully intend on throwing a 6 weight with flies that look like bread (think you would work up a few patterns to look like that on some saltwater hook? lol) for mullet in bays, good bait, good fight, win win
then i can throw those sand fleas on it in the surf for pompano, whiting, and whatever else is there

then im probably going to get a dozen crabs and shrimp each in a few sizes from him, then half a dozen bread flies in a few sizes. then ill probably buy 3 bangers, totalling up to 33 flies and more money than i should have spent. then ill tie some 9' 0x leaders and some 9' 2x leaders and probably a few 7.5' 0x leaders with a #25-#30 hard mono leader incase i get in to some toothy bullshit

lol...my buddy has a bong called that. i'm only familiar with the sculpin headbanger pattern but..whats a mini banger?
these came out to 5"- 6" long.

bobbin: tiemco ceramic, you wont need another for the rest of your life.

you can find all sorts of feathers at the craft store including marabou scarves to rip apart but nice hackle and good bucktails are always good to have around. until you have too many then its a hassle to dig through with so many choices and they kinda stinks like ass in your room.

yup and shooting heads. (im the guy that was talking to you about them before) loop to loop connects make line swaps really easy and fast when you want to change up. one of tricks is to make the head short enough so that you have the end of the running line outside the tip. (i like amnesia or rio slickshoot) makes shooting really easy. youll need a stripping basket as well.

found some 3/16th adhesive foam at mikes gonna play with it today.

the darts i got at goodwill for fifty cents. ive make a bunch of poppers with old thick flip flops and cheap womens foam platform shoes.
usually $2 a pair. i have regual closed cell foam but i like to try new random stuff out to keep the creative juice flowing...you never know what will come out of the vise..

a cut off golf shaft cuts them fine. flip flop material is nice because you can shape them on the sander and often come in layered colors. these nerf bullets are okay but the foam isnt as good as flip flops.

Finding good cheap sources for closed cell foam can be difficult sometimes. The foam I'm using right now (water pipe insulation foam) isn't very good at all, but I had some leftovers and had to try it. It is okay for tiny flies and some bodies, but not for poppers.

Very nice book.

Here's what the foam from an old flipflop looks like. The main problem is that it is too thin for anything larger and is mostly mashed already. I can still make a ton of small poppers and such from one. New ones cost like $2 and come in many colors which won't be smashed from use.

>boogie boards

lol nope none here. That makes me think of foam floor mats for gyms and romper rooms. It comes in 1/4" 3/8" 1/2" thick.

A good crab or shrimp pattern is probably going to be upwards of $7 a fly. I saw an enameled shrimp with articulated tail going for $15 at the fly shop last week.

They're nice and work well but shrimp patterns are very expensive for what they are.

You'll be better off with a specialized musky or cuda leader than #30 mono. It just won't cast right even with bigger flies

you've aptly summed up fly fishing. if you're worried about getting your tippet bit through consider replacing the tippet section with a similar diameter section of braid.

I as rummaging through some old tackle and found a ziploc bag full of this stuff I bought at a yardsale for $0.50. Unfortunately, one of them had a plastic that melted everything it touched and all the skirting is ruined, even if it doesn't look like it. I can salvage about half of the skirting of one, so I'll use that for fly tying.

How do you get slimy, sticky, melted, plastic gunk off the metal hardware? It sticks to everything.

Digital cameras absolutely hate low light. Cheap ones are even worse. Thus, you need to overkill it with light sometimes. I have a 4 feet long, shop light with two 40watt bulbs right above where I take pics. The black background ones are with flash against a 3 feet wide lcd. Most wood backgrounds like this are shop light only, but I need to use the tripod to do them otherwise they blur like mad.

In my area, most of the fish disappear, in the smaller streams. I practically dredge the bottom to get a response and only in the larger bodies of water. I normally only catch black bass and catfish in the winter.

What's the point to skirts and feathers on lures? I understand fish bite a lot of things as long as they move life like, but what do the two actually mimic?

Skirts mimic a bait ball and feathers mimic baitfish or baitball on most lures. Other times feathers mimic various invertebrates which are usually apparent. Essentially though, all lures mimic everything that is not inedible. That means everything that isn't a twig, rock, algae, etc. Fish distinguish this via Color, Complexity, Contrast, and Movement.

>>
>>921580
I think it has to do in part because they can't rapidly put on weight like bass can so they can't fatten up and then go sit in the deep water motionless

Also panfish tend to have a relatively small range within the body of water as a whole and they're by and large more prone to stay in their schools

I catch crappie in the winter on plastic grubs so I'm assuming there's some live ones down there

More money in coke anyway.

But the Coke plant around here is more fucked up than Pepsi. And I think we do a little better. If I leave Pepsi, I'm not going to deliver soda somewhere else.

Also, ICYMI, Pepsi actually does more in sales than Coca Cola. People don't drink soda like they used to and Pepsi went out and bought a ton of other companies like Gatorade and Starbucks and has a much better future than Coke.

Running a small business is a pain in the ass. And stuff like that, you don't even make that much money and work tons of hours. And assuming you can find somebody competent to manage it so you aren't working 80hrs a week there, you have to pay them enough to keep em around and make even less money.

>>921856
I'm sure they are invaisive. They (grass carp) were actually introduced down here for "vegetation control" so I don't think you are even supposed to target them but most other places in the US, they want you to get rid of them. I haven't really seen common carp around here but the grass carp get huge.
>>
>>921856
The problem is one carp lays something like a million eggs a year, and once they get big enough a lot of places don't have predators that can eat them. So even if only 10/1,000,000 survive one spawn they still grow at a very fast rate. They are v bad for the ecosystem.

They want to use a circle hook to take advantage of its corner-of-the-mouth hooking. Yet they can't put a grub on it in a normal way because you can not block the opening between the hook point and the shaft on a circle hook or it will not work properly for corner-of-the-mouth hooking. Bait needs to be placed at the bottom of the hook as in that image. They are using the best method to combine a circle hook with a lure.

Well, this container is finally full. Panfish and black bass will fear me this season.

>>921970
Invasive species use resources native species normally use and can rub them out of the ecosystem if unchecked.

As far as pollution, on average carp have 0.11-0.14ppm mercury and catfish 0.025-0.049ppm when exposed to the same amounts in the environment. Those numbers are only good for seeing the difference between them. Thus carp have 2.8-4.4 times the amount of pollution (mercury) than catfish in the same waters.

By those numbers you could eat less than 18.5 ounces of carp a week and reach 100% of allowed mercury consumption (depending on your weight). Compared to about 53 ounces for catfish. of course, if the waters are more polluted then all bets are off for anything really.

I have to monitor what I eat, how much I eat, & its source location in order to accurately monitor pollution content of the fish I eat to know how much I'm eating. I stay away from store/restaurant fish because you can almost never find out the fish's original location. "From the crisp cold waters of the Atlantic" and "farmed in China" don't really cut it for me.

This right here mang.

After hiking to our spot on the river my fishing buddy asked me what I was fishing with ( it was dark and we where just using the moon to see). I replied rum and coke as I mixed myself a drink before getting my line out. Two years later he still tells that story.

Yeah that truck was about done though. A bunch of people were out and already had most of the trucks so it was either that one or these Freightliners with like 500k that I hate driving. I was only pulling a 40' trailer (was loaded with drinks) but it felt down on power when normally those KW's pull bretty gud.

And that's a daycab too so those 720k mi are city driving, not all highway. 10spd trans was so vague and wobbly, it was fun the first couple blocks I drove the truck until I figured out where it liked to shift.

Idk, this year hasn't been too bad. I normally only work like 45hrs a week which is good for a local driving job where most people are working 50+. I used to have a lot of 50-60hr weeks but now I have my shit figured out a bit more. The past two weeks have just been fukt because it has been real slow since the end of August, a bunch of people quit and they haven't hired anybody new with the light loads, and then it got real heavy with Xmas sales and then tons and tons of returns for the end of the year. This next week might be busy with the beginning of the new year and people running low on product to make numbers good for the year and then stocking up again after Jan 1. But then after that I'm hoping it calms down until May-June.

I might take a week of vacation towards the end of Jan or beginning of Feb too so I can relax and fish.

European Carp are absolutely trash outside of Europe. In Northern America and Australia they love to just eat the mud in our rivers and lakes so taste so accordingly. Seen backpackers who eat them in their native country get so excited when they catch them here and try to cook them up, they always end up throwing the Carp into the trash after a mouthful.

>>921856
Highly invasive, big fine if you return them to the water alive or even the corpse of a female with eggs.
>>
>>922200
Common carp aren't deemed dangerous in my state, just the Asian carps.
>>
>>922204
Where do you live? I'd have thought they would be declared a noxious pest outside of all of Europe due to their tendency to outbreed most native fish and making the waterways more murkier.

Carp don't eat mud and taste fine. Carp are rummaging in the mud and silt for invertebrates to eat. That is why the number one natural fly is a trouser worm.

any fly fishing anons here? or anyone who trout fishes in general?
>>

Noob and haven't got one yet but I'm digging the style. Wading along rivers is better than any style of fishing. The feel when you come across a nice pool and cast just right on top of it.
Would feel great if I actually land a fish after it lol.

I fly fish but usually not for trout. Usually after panfish or bass with poppers.

Also fish for Lake Trout but not on a fly rod. They're 30-200 ft down, not reachable fly fishing except a few specific weeks out of the year.

well fuck,
i dont flyfish but have considered getting into it , mostly for finesse presentaions,

i was mostly going to ask about small flys for small fishes ( native brookies less than 6 inches long ) and flyfishing in early winter

That's more of a Western US type thing. I'm in the Northeast. Some of the larger lakes here have trout runs in the spring and Salmon runs in the fall, but they're pretty brief and standing shoulder to shoulder with other anglers to fish for them doesn't appeal to me. Otherwise there are some decent rivers and streams with browns and brook trout. Lakers and bass/panfish are king here though, haven't gotten tired of them yet.

That's interesting about the red because there are a lot of deep diving cranks in a red crawdad color.

I have $40 to Bass Pro and want to go spend some money but also want to order stuff online. Too lazy to drive to the store and too impatient to wait for online stuff.

Plus I'm not sure if I should buy a handful of little stuff or put it towards a rod or reel.

Honestly, it's not that hard, and small trout will eat surprisingly big flies, and vice versa, pic related ate a #20 pheasant tail
If you're just looking for small brookies and similar, I'd get a fiberglass 3 weight or 4 weight under 7 feet

There's a little pond outside Austin I fish stock trout out of. Apparently it has grass carp (never actually seen one) and a sign saying that any caught are to be immediately returned to the water alive ASAP.

I'm guessing it's in order to keep someone from even unintentionally moving them to another body of water.
