Any homeless bros ever come to Lincoln Nebraska? We have many railroads but have heard homeless travelers call it stinking Lincoln before so I wonder if it's a miserable place for that

>begging for food
This actually allows you to eat way outside your means. You can get some seriously good food for free, especially if you hang outside of co ops or hipster health food restraunts. It is very nice to be able to eat healthier on the street than box life. One day youll get tired of hot pockets and mt. dew anon, what then?

As far as sleeping in a box thats gonna be your personal preference. Personally, i make a comfy ass camp innawoods and chill. I dont know who'd want to do that though, i mean camping all the time sucks right?

>One night? Ive taken shits harder than spending one night in a random city. What do you mean you wouldnt do it again?

Try to sleep in a city you don't know, you don't where you can find you a nice place to sleep, you try to sleep on a random bench without knowing if you're in the bad neighborhoods or not, getting sleepy but afraid to get robbed or assaulted in the night, cold but can't do anything about it,. It's just a shit situation to be in if you don't have know the place, do not have any money on you, don't know the city or anyone, and being cold and afraid all night long.Wouldn't recommend

I have been homeless and traveling 5 years, i have spent more nights in new cities than i can remember. You could have gone to an ihop, dennys, truck stop, walmart, waffle house.. Plenty of places to stay warm. Getting 3 bucks together for the bus is easy. Missing one night of sleep wont kill you.

Also you sleep in the bushes not on a bench anon.
>>
>>908667
>You could have gone to an ihop, dennys, truck stop, walmart, waffle house

It wasn't in burgerland, it was a sunday night in spain ( i didn't speak spanish at the time btw ), so there was absolutely not a fucking thing opened. My phone didn't have any battery too.
>>
>>908674
How did you manage that? Miss a flight or something?
>>
>>908484
how do I send you shekels friend?
>>
>>908676
Flight was late so i missed the bus from the airport that goes to the city i was going to ( which was 2 hours away driving )
Spent all my money to get to the city, i was supposed to retrieve the keys to the flat i rented in an hotel or something, but i got lost not knowing the city at all and not being able to speak to the guy who drived me there, i wasn't able to find the hotel ( i found out later i wasn't in the center at all, so there was no people in the street and i wasn't able to find a single thing opened ), not wanting to got even more lost and find myself in some real shitty parts, i spent the night ( actually more like 6 hours given that i arrived in the middle of the night ) and then found someone who spoke enough english to tell me where the center was, and then the hotel ( which was closed during the night btw, only opened at like 9 ) to retrieve the keys to get me to the flat.

It was some years ago, and my first time alone in an unknown country, so i made bad decisions.
>>
what kind of haircut and facial hair pattern do you recommend, op?
>>
>>908677
I do have a couple places i can be mailed things, if you want to get in touch with me my email is outinnaforest@gmail. If youre sending anthrax or a pipe bomb just let me know when its getting there, that way i can make sure its me who picks it up. Wouldnt want my friends getting sploded for me.

>>908683
Thats crazy, too bad you didnt have a book or something so you could just read all night. I bet if you were a day sooner it couldve been a good time as opposed to a ghost town. I have heard lots of good stories from other travelers whove gone to spain, i havent made it out of north america personally.

Thinking about bumming around this winter, live mid-east coast, want to hitchhike south. I've hitchhiked before, but it was always to and from trails and towns. Once did the length of Vermont because I finished the Long Trail.

Anyways, any recommendations, tips, stories? My main concern is finding spots to sleep.
>>
>>909512
Finding spots to sleep is the easiest thing about it. Just find any big bush or tree cluster, tall grass, retaining wall, anywhere where people arent going to see you. There are no anti sleep squads patrolling for you, just get outta sight and crash.

New Orleans

Friend of mine went down there to busk after he graduated from college and he's apparently quite happy with that life but he's also a genius who can play damn near any instrument at a virtuoso level so he's able to get gigs with any band looking for someone when he wants a more formal setting than a street corner

>>
>>911612
I plugged it in. Next time you're in a public space, keep your eyes peeled for wall outlets. They're everywhere--under a table, behind an in-store ATM, on the library study desk, ....
>>
>>910491
you can get unactivated smartphones for like $20 these days. You won't get a cell signal but you can still use wifi
>>
>>910637
certain parts of socal
>>
>>911808
This is what I did. You can even get calls and texts (while on WiFi) for free through Google voice.

Pro tip: Starbucks will give you iced or hot water for free, bring your own tea.
>>
>>912010
Pretty much anywhere will give you water. If you get your ass up early and look groggy outside Starbucks people will buy you coffee. Don't even gotta find a piece of cardboard or nothin.
>>
>>912051
My favorite is money for nothing. It feels like a bum level up every time. I'm just minding my own business, rummaging in my bag or standing outside the bathroom and some old lady gives me money for looking grungy.
>>
>>912051
Not a lot of places will give hot water, though.

And while I won't typically turn down cash or food if it's offered, I'd rather get freebies from corporations than people, since I know they'll make it back during my next earning phase.

>I'm a seasonal transient.
>>
>>912056
Gas stations almost always have scalding bun water near the coffee, usually for free. Places that aren't always dealing with travelers or homeless often let you use their microwave for free too.

How's the train hopping life?
It's a wet dream of mine to hop across America.
Any advice?
>>
Britbong here - clueless about the hobo lifestyle especially in USA apart from the little we see on TV.

I appreciate begging for food and lack of money will certainly make life harder than we are led to believe (I know exactly what it's like to be hungry and cold with no idea when I'll be warm or fed next) but how is travelling round out there doing what you do?

We see it here as you just sneak up to an open train and hop aboard. Over here we would be arrested before we managed to get close to a train there's way too much cctv.

Is it that easy to travel?
>>
>>912237
One of the worst ways of homeless travel. Only drug addicts do it as a way to transport drugs. If you want to get shanked by a methhead then go for it. Also it's not comfy at all. The cargo cars that you would have to hide away in are rugged and will leave you unable to walk and will fuck up your back. Plus if you go anywhere cold being in an open train car going 50 mph+ is awful.
>>
>>912276
So preferred method of travel is? Hitch hiking I assume?
>>
>>912281
Riding a bike.
>>
>>912284
Simple as that eh?

Living in UK its so small I can walk east to west in a few days (we're never over 70 miles from the sea anywhere) and even N to S isn't all that far. Putting some effort in I could do John O groats to lands end in a very leisurely 40 days walk.

Then I look at USA and see how fucking huge it is! You're very lucky in so many ways.
>>
>>908484

Suggestions for places to sleep unnoticed in a big city?

I'm planning a trip next summer to hike / hitchhike through Europe, stopping at the occasional hostel but with the option of just camping out if the mood takes me. Don't want to get bothered by cops or whatnot.
>>
>>912352
Yeah biking is the best way to homeless travel here with little risk. >>912354
Never sleep in a city. Basic rule of homeless living. You go there to panhandle and then sleep in the country. The city is a dangerous place. Much better to find a farm and sleep there.
>>
>>912276
Are we just talking Europe here? This is not how it is in the US.
>>912354
I hear Sweden lets you sleep wherever the fuck you want so long as it's not in the actual street. Wonder if anywhere else in Europe has gotten so bum tolerant.

Anyone ever meet any families living on the road? Met some ex cultists who were just normies with internet jobs and trendy tastes living in state parks in a bus. Kinda weird. Always hope to meet some badass semi feral road kids, y'know?
>>
>>912389
That is how it is in the USA. I train hopped for a year and everyone I met was a junkie. I carried a firearm so I wasn't worried but that is the reality.
>>
>>912422
Your reality, I guess. Train kids are a notoriously rough crowd, but not a drug smuggling ring.
>>
>>912430
Because you have so much experience and knowledge of train hopping, right? If you live in the south then the cartel will be using trains to run their shit North. If you live in the west then you have to deal with junkies. If you live in the East that is the safest place to train hop but it is only safe in winter months.

Trains are a drug front. It is extremely easy for someone with a pack to jump into a cargo train. They will kill you 3 hours into the ride to secure their own safety later and to protect the drugs. How do you think drugs get North? It's by trains.
>>
>>912439
I assume they get north in your hard ass.
>>
>>912464 #
>>912461 #
Ironically, that's how you fucks sound. My strategy was not to argue, but if you need some salve for the fresh burn on your ass:
Hung out in the town that is home to the world's largest rail yard for 2+ months this summer. Met tons of train kids there, in addition to the kids I've met all across the US. I'm not saying no one smuggles drugs on trains, but the claim that
>Only drug addicts do it as a way to transport drugs. If you want to get shanked by a methhead then go for it.
is not accurate, and is, in fact, not even something you have to worry about as much as bulls, tunnels and your own dumb ass falling or running into some faggot who puts his hardcore life on Instagram.
>>
>>912476
Yet you provide no evidence to your claims and act coi.

Most people I meet on the road are more genuine, more understanding and more on the level than people I've encountered in any other setting. It could get a little hairy if you're delusions ever cause you to accuse someone of stealing your stuff or some such scenario, but if you're not a fuckhead, come on out here! Even if you are, shit, you'll be guaranteed 3 hots and a cot any time you lose it.

Says Satan the deceiver.
>>
>>912715
Haha, yeah I understand. Problem is I have a delusion of grandiosity occasionally, and being in jail lowers my chances of being a millionaire. It bothers me deeply. Though I think I would do very well in prison once I get there. That's part of the issue I think, when I get there; I won't be leaving.

However most times I need no material goods and want to just live in the moment. I'm really down to Earth and can easily have quite a deep conversation with someone.

A lot of times I do become anti-social though, but I think if I can truly let go of things I may be able to change this. But I imagine only on the road I could change this idea on such a core level.

I live in Eugene, Oregon right now. I wouldn't join a group of hobos here, seems all they want is to get high and rob people.

I'm a true woodsman, and strictly want freedom. I don't care who you are, as long as you actually have a sense of integrity.

I don't know an instrument and have never begged before. I don't know how I would feel about doing this, but if I have to try them so be it.

Rainbow isn't so bad, what you're referring to is what they call "drainbow" but if you're the anon in Eugene Oregon I'd wager you've been fed a lot of shit about them. They're doing a number on Eugene in particular with their psyop to get you to hate homeless/travelers/"hippies"

Oh, I don't know how it is locally there, the Ocala gathering has gotten so bad over the years that the elders and old heads made a new gathering called "nocala" to protest how shitty the original gathering has gotten.

Often regional rainbow gatherings are filled with a nearby cities crusty kids and party-goers, Ocala has apparently been blown up for a while. I can only imagine the bullshit they try to peddle Normie's as an explanation is the same everywhere, which amounts to fear and hate.
>>
>>912809

The last time I went, I showed up 2 weeks before the actual gathering and just camped out for almost a month. The people that I was with were from all over the country, even coming from as far as Alaska in one instance. The reason why I dislike them is 1) The cultish attitude and 2) The total lack of motivation to build anything or do anything other than get high. I guess a lot of people are homeless for a reason.

There's too many core differences between rainbow life and 'normal' society to really get into these feelings you have, but I will say; you'll see what you want to see and find what you want to find. It's easy for you to say they seem cultish from the outside but for them, rainbow and one another is all they have. Like I said, I'm not rainbow at all really, I just wish them the best and hate to see their name tarnished by misconceptions and misrepresentations.

Yeah, I know it's probly a shit statistic, but my point is there isn't much sympathy or resources for the mentally ill in this country, especially if they've no fixed address, steady income, family/friends around. Do you travellers tend to see many mentally ill? Do they travel or homebum? Have you ever tried to help someone like this?
>>
>>913512
I've mostly met homebums, about half I'd say have some sort of mental illness or addiction, the rest are just down on their luck and are trying to make ends meet and get back into a house and get their kids back or whatever. I've met a few other travelers, but I try to not compare backstories, since most people are forced into homelessness and I feel like a dick for having a home to go back to.

But I'm a seasonal traveler (home currently), so I usually only meet the people that are on the main roads of cities and towns that I pass by.

I know this place well. If anyone finds themselves around go up to lake serene and bridal vile falls. Simply beautiful. Bring lots of water though
>>
>>913534
No, that's about it, there's a few gem shows there during January. It's also like one big swap meet and thrift store. The population of Quarzite is like 5k or less, during winter they receive hundreds of thousands of people. It's been losing popularity over the years though, it seems. Management for a few of the gemshows think they're king of the land for owning their dirt lots in nowhere.

It's just something to do in January really, it's basically cold everywhere else and there's not much going on. It also puts everyone really close to Tucson, which has a major gem expo the first two weeks of Feb, followed by a music festival towards the end of the gem show. The music festival is taking off in popularity, two years ago you could park right outside and camp there. Now you have to pay $50 to park right outside there per day and you can't camp overnight, to camp overnight you have to go down the road and pay $30 to camp in a big fenced in area in a tent-city grid of festie kids, the new 'lot' experience. This year we'll see if there's any community or fun allowed to it all or if it's just nearly packaged shit trying to sell metaphysical horseshit.

Inside the festival, you walk into a booth to overhear some sperg with a bunch of tourmaline wraps make a sale like "Yeah this totally balances your chakras, really helps keeps me calm and grounded, this will help with manifestation!" And some hippy and his gf who both appear to be rolling hard on molly are all "Yeah sounds good we'll take matching ones!" Only to watch the guy sell the exact same thing later with a different load of new age mumbo jumbo.

I should mention there's nothing necessarily wrong with what the 'hippies'/ real hippies/new age/spiritual are doing, just that there's a big difference between living mostly /out/ year round while actually studying/believing occultism or new age or anything and making up half of what you say to make a sale while not actually believing in any of it at all.

What? I didn't know they moved it. That makes sense, its been a shitshow at the Slaughterhouse the last year or two. They basically didnt have a good enough layout of surrounding parking to ensure that everyone would absolutely have to pay to park, camp, or even hang out in the parking lot. It looks like with having it out there, they'll get money out of everyone for everything. The year before last there wasn't even bathrooms outside the festival.

I always just snuck in, the fence was easy to hop, there was a spot you could even go through a hole in the fence, my preferred method of entry was walking in the unguarded back door of the 'club' stage. The guy who owns the Slaughterhouse is an ass anyway.

The real fun of the festivals is hanging out on lot for a few days, maybe going inside a few times to listen to your favorite bands. Now that they're making people pay to even come into the parking lot, i feel things are going to be a lot different vibe. Here's your lot experience! :^)

Wew lad, I was just looking into it and apparently to even enter the $30 parking lot area to camp, you have to buy a $180 ticket for the festival. Only people who have paid $180+camping fees ($30-300) will be inside or around.

They also have $150 walking vendor tickets that will allow you to carry your shit around and sell it inside, but you'll probably need it to even sell your shit in the 'lot' I'm guessing. And who's going to throw down big dosh on expensive jewelry or art when they have to pay out the ass for food, for water, to even see what was inside. Rich glamping 'hippies' from Sedona who don't even want to interact with the 'lower class' travelers, despite us being the literal personification of an idea which the scene is based off of in the first place. Burning man all over again.

It's sad because just a few years ago Alex and Allison Grey were talking about how G&J was one of the best shows for mixing the professional art environment with the traveling scene. No fun allowed, I guess. The parking lot should be an open air environment, unregulated and untaxed, a separate entity from the show itself. The spirit of it all has been quickly ruined, now its about the allmighty dollar.

The real 'lot' will wind up coalescing on the parking completely outside the gates, if there is any parking out there.

Looking like I'm going to be homeless next week. It's below freezing where I am at, homeless shelters are reserved for pregnant women and children because they are so crowded this time of year. Considering I will be on the streets literally right after Christmas, I don't think I'll be getting many hand outs right after the holiday of giving. I'm also being served so I will have very little money to my name, if any. Good news is if the fire dept finds you nearly dead they will take you to a hospital to spend the night.

What is some cheap must haves for being homeless in the winter? I'm planning on wearing layers and I have a warm hat, scarf, some shitty gloves and an old pair of hiking boots.
>>
>>914836
not currently a vagabond but am likely to end up as one seeing how things are currently goin for me. but when i was younger and used to run away from home i brought a shitty laptop and there are outlets everywhere in cafes and fast food restaurants, and most other public places.

Not homeless myself but have done some winter camping.

Layer it up, my man. Put on all the clothes you can. Find an army disposal store and see if you can snag some cheap thermals.
>>
>>914876
Sleeping bag, for sure. Look on Craigslist in the area for one that's rated really good, but first i guess how cold are you talking here? It might just be easier to try and leave. Is there any chance you can get a bus/plane ticket into warmer climates? Tell us more before we give prime advice and find out you're going to be homeless in the -5 weather or something. Right below freezing isn't so bad, down in single digits and negatives is a different story.
>>

Also if you get desperate, stuff some newspaper down your shirt for extra insulation. Find a place out of the wind, as well. It can be cold as fuck but bearable if you don't have that windchill factor.

That wasn't the intention of my post at all. I just pointed out that if you're a native English speaker, you should probably know how to conjugate a verb. Typos and spelling errors are one thing, but a fundamental misunderstanding of your native language is another. You all think you're brilliant renegades who have found the true way, but in reality, you're leaches who are just frustrated at your limited job prospects.
>>
>>919096
>leeches
So if I went and got neetbux and stayed inside all the time where you couldn't see me, that'd be okay? Less leech? What if I went the route of so many idiots I've seen, working a part time job under the table for cash while being subsidized on government gibs, be it neetbux or housing or whatever, and blowing all the money on shitty consumerist products? I'm contributing to the machine, right? That's successful, right? :^)

>frustrated that we can't work poverty tier jobs
??? I know a lot of kids who stopped traveling and picked up jobs, a few have houses now. Why would becoming more well traveled and more experienced be frustrating? For me, working a dead end job staying in one place is the definition of stagnation. Work so I can live? Why not just live?

Unhappy and bored? Work to be happy! Still not happy? Buy a box! Box not doing it for you? Buy shit to fill your box! Buying shit isn't making you happy? Here, take these pills, they'll make you happy! Still not happy? Go ahead and retire and go traveling, that'll make you happy! Too bad you're old as fuck now though and between work and pills you can hardly leave your glamp site! Maybe you could use some new stuff to help you experience the outdoors? Though I hope you're not too set in your thought patterns and routines like most old people are. Visiting new places that arent filled with crotchety old fucks might just be more stress than you bargained for, its okay though, we've got pills for that and if the thought of young people stresses you we have entire trailer par- I mean, mobile campgrounds, filled with old fucks waiting to die :^)

>don't forget to stay inside the lines!

You work to live in your box with all your things, I'll not work and gladly live outside the box. For commoners, a novelty based economy and whacky ideas like UBI are the future, don't be upset at us for getting a head start. You keep doing you, I'll keep doing me
>>
>>919108
>So if I went and got neetbux and stayed inside all the time where you couldn't see me, that'd be okay?

Nope, just as bad.

> Why not just live?

Because you steal from society. When I spent time with the Rainbow, they would go into town, piss on vegetables at grocery stores, then raid the dumpsters when they were thrown out. You can say that you don't participate in this activity, but that chat itt would seem to indicate otherwise.
>>
>>919111
Are you the Ocala anon? I already went over this in this thread I think, I'm not rainbow and what you described is "drainbow". Idiots like that get their asses kicked after they blow up the local town for everyone else. Plus, the more that shit happens the more it fractures the community of travelers into those who work for the tribe and those who just keep taking as if our tribe is no different than the all-providing "system".

What part of anything I've said ITT makes you think I'm a shithead? In my hood, breaking a bottle on the ground means you're going to pick it up or we're walking around the corner to kick your shit in and then you're picking it up anyway. Don't assume we're all the same. I don't assume all people who live a "normal" life are the same, I don't go out of my way to talk shit or take advantage of "the system" in person, I don't assume you're all scum when homeless get murdered. Would it be fair to associate you with those murderers because you also dont like what we're doing? You assume we're such a large drain on the system when the people in the system are draining it far more.

What happened at rainbow? Did you get taken advantage of by some slick crusty kids and now you hate all people who subscribe to the "traveler/nomad" title?

Really made me think, what with your abundance of sound arguments based in reality instead of feelings. What service do you provide that won't be automated in the next decade or two? Do you feel better trying to talk shit do people who, according to you, are the lowest of the low? How's it feel knowing that to find meaning in your life you have to work a job and "contribute"?

I don't hate you, I just pity your purposeless existence and your inevitable midlife crisis. Your masters have convinced you that you matter and that you contribute and are therefore more valuable than the person who contributes less. Can't wait until the elites decide everyone who contributed less than them is a parasite. When you're older and everythings automated to the point that there's literally no physical/basic/labor jobs for you, perhaps you'll find meaning in something other than work. Pay no attention to all the old people who went down that path and now regret it, wishing they'd found something besides work their whole life.

Whatever famalam, you're the star of your own movie. Sorry your movie is working your life away.

I see two problems with this post. First, despite you not contributing anything to society (tm), on some basic level you still are in need of validation and acceptance from fellow humans. Hence, the compulsion to defent your lifechoice on an imageboard.

The second problem is that the arguments you use are broken. Ex.

> there exist people unhappy with their job, they get depressed
> welp, I guess I'll be a bum instead

or

> a portion of manual labour could be potentially automated
> welp, I see no choice but be a bum, etc

I don't know what is your particular malfunction (most homeless have something), but I believe that you are at least capable of understanding the absurdity of your conclusions as illustrated above.

I don't hate you either, just calling out things as I see them.

But that's wrong, you just think we don't because of your preconceived notion of what it is we do. I carry over a grand in crystals around, along with playing music now. We make these threads to convince more of you to come give it a try, what have you got to lose? If I were seeking validation I'd get a trip or start a blog like most idiots. I just want other anons who are in a place I can relate to know that life doesn't have to be so rushed and planned and boxed in; get out and experience while you can.
>>919294
I was rather cordial I thought. Everyone always thinks we're talking so much shit on their lives when we're just responding to people who started talking shit first. Don't mistake shitposting and petty arguing for serious indications of our character.

I don't assume that every person who says "bums suck" goes around expressing their dislike to bums on the street, similarly I don't get why anyone would assume that when we argue with others here that we go around in person telling people they're slaves to the system or whatever. We make lots of money off of normal people who are in the system and who we don't hate, I highly doubt anyone here was giving lots of money to bums or had a high opinion of us before anyway.

As for the ones curious about what we do, they'll see the lining and I'm certainly not anything like the assholes they'll meet on the street if they do come /out/. This is the one place we're allowed to be antisocial assholes because the rest of the time we're on front street for the world to judge, and some of us hold ourselves to higher standards despite living this way. Further, I've been on 4chan for over ten years, being an antisocial idiot is what we do here.

I wasn't meaning to come down terribly harshly on either of you, just trying to be direct enough that what I said would cause some retrospection.

We're all guilty of it, though, even myself; when I'm traveling I get agitated at people who call me names for hitchhiking, just as much as I get agitated at people who aggressively ask me for money while I'm working. But I'm grateful to people who pick me up and I give more money than usual to those who don't ask me at all. We just have to constantly remind ourselves that just because the most hateful members of a group tend to be the loudest among them, they don't typically represent the average person thereof.

Welp, I fucked up bad, my wife and I are now homeless. Drove up to Aspen to stay at a friends cabin, we headed up a day early, they thought they left a spare key in the outdoor sauna, it's not there. There are no hotel rooms available, checked everywhere, and now the roads are too icy to drive back in my car. I really don't know what to do, it's way too cold to survive outside and I'm going to run out of gas trying to idle with the heater running. What the fuck can we even do? Would it be crazy to knock on a random door and offer them money to sleep in their house?
