Whats your routine when stumbling upon (and researching) an interesting place?
Here's what i do most of the times:

>Step 1: Basic Internet search
Checking whats to find about it on Google and Google Earth/Maps. The downloaded version of Google Earth offers the option to use old satellite maps wich shows some places in better conditions, or with less trees wich sometimes opens the view to parts that were hidden before. Sometimes pictures made by other explorers are aviable, giving a good look at what will await me.

>Step 2: A first look
If the place isnt that far away and/or the info found is blurry, i take a first sneak peek without any exploration gear and without entering the place itself.
>Isnt this a waste of time?
Satellite maps and pictures on the internet can be horribly outdated sometimes. Ive found enough places demolished and overbuilt by houses while the maps still showed the old buildings. For me it is a bigger waste of time to go there, carrying all my stuff with me and finding nothing in the end.

I often just walk around the Place in some distance while keeping my movements legal and unsuspicious (walking on official paths or streets). This is helpful to find new entrance possibilities or to check if my old planned routes are still in a good condition.

>Step 3: Preparations
With the info collected i finally plan from where i enter the building and where i will probably leave it. Having some extra escape routes in case of angry owners or shady residents is also recommended.

[rest follows]

>Step 4: Here we go
Shortly after the day i took the first look, i finally enter the place, after going through this small checklist:
1. Is the building still there? (I was lazy one time and the whole thing got demolished a couple days after i was there the last time)
2. Has anything changed, are there signs from some demolishing or security-company that havent been there the last time?
3. Are other persons visible or audible inside the place?
4. Are there fresh traces of other people wich show that there are other people inside?
5. Are there other people around the place that could see you entering the place and call the police?

same here, google abandoned (your town) then get photos of a location with a cityscape and find it from there
>>
>>676077

These are some good steps to follow, I tend to do the same thing. I usually wear clothing that I would normally wear out in public, if you go dressed in camo/ninja gear it's just going to attract attention when you're walking down the street. Also depending on what/wear the place is changes what equipment I bring, but don't bring anything that's obviously illegal or going to look bad if police ask what you're doing there.
>>
>>676834
I'm assuming that's in the US, there's so much more to explore there then where I am.
>>
>>677713
Not the case everywhere. Where I live we explore abandoned homesteads and they are usually surround by field or forest. Generally speaking you aren't supposed to be on land with homesteads on it so it is best to dress in darker colors.
>>
>>677861
The point was don't wear something that makes you look like you're on a covert military operation or a delinquent teen that's up to no good, it'll only draw attention. Darker clothing is always good but wear something that you can walk through town with if you need to.

Attach a rake to an electric toothbrush.
Get a variety of tension wrenches.
Make shims out of aluminum foil.
Keep in mind that the law frowns upon carrying burglary tools in many places, be sure to check how bad it would be if you were caught with these tools.

Some pretty shit-tier urbex

I don't ever go into residential areas so no worries being caught. I like the idea of the toothbrush and tension wrenches, if I do that I'll have to cover the thing in cloth.

Know any good places in CT?

How does one not break stuff, or how does one explore conscientiously? More than "be careful" would be helpful. I imagine there's some basic tenets that are simple to apply but are complicated to understand without being told or finding out firsthand.
>>
>>676077
>>676834

So wait, what? You guys just roam around on Google Earth all day looking for shit to explore?

How many hits do you get.

Anon is not talking about accidental damage. He refers to the dicks that go and smash shit up for "fun." A lot of these twats get their information from blogs and forums etc.

There's an abandoned shopping mall in the town where I live, it's been abandoned for like 7 years. Hobos and drug addicts live there. I wanted to see how it looked like , so last month I went there. Here's some pics.

A suprising lot of hits. at least for me because i live in a dense urban environment with industrial past where you just stumble upon something when stepping off the path

>>681228
a snail shell, the place is littered with them
>>
>>680830
>How does one not break stuff
Are you a fucking clutz, do you break stuff in your day to day life as well? Seriously though it's not hard to look around without breaking stuff. If you do end up breaking something then make sure the damage isn't visible for people that walk/drive past, it just gets security called.

Yesterday I made my own lockpick set. Today I unlock a few chinese locks 0 U$D spent, just the energy used with the dremel.

Anyone know of any good stuff near Milwaukee?
>>
>>681290
extra socks
water
multitool
2 lights
extra batteries
rudimentary first aid kit
snacks
more than one form of communication for the group (more than one phone, phone and radio, etc)
'tography equipment
liquorhol of choice
FRIENDS - never ever ever go alone

this is just what i generally lug along when i fuck around the train tracks and old mill nearby. if i'm doing something special i might bring special gear - like protective eyewear, latex gloves, etc. depends where you'll be mucking about.

DON'T bring any weapons. you'll go straight to jail for menacing or for being in the process of committing a crime, or disturbance of the peace, etc.
>>
>>681375
>DON'T bring any weapons
But what if I get attacked by a methhead?
>>
>>681386
when you get attacked by hobos or crazypersons you defend yourself, you don't counter-attack. you have to remember that you're trespassing. you need to be sneaky and aware of your surroundings, and you need to keep yourself out of trouble and jail.

DON'T bring fucking weapons with you. stop watching the news, nobody is going to attack you. you're way more likely to be cornered or questioned by security or police. weapon = immediate arrest and ask questions later. socks and camera = "move along please"
>>
>>681386
thats why you bring thick gloves to punch their nasty faces without getting infected with every STD possible

gloves are a good idea in general
