Something I got from there is a propane fish fryer I use caping (car caping o ly, its huge). It's pretty sweet, and costs like $50.

I have that one and didn't realize when I bought it the temps aren't really good enough to make food safe jerky. You have to preheat your meat to 160/165 before you dry it out. Granted I have made some beef jerky from store bought meat without doing the pre-heat but if your meat does have harmful bacteria in it, the dehydrator alone won't kill them off.

I haven't tried making jerky, but I'm drying heart in it right now for pemmican, which should be dried under 110F anyway. Its fresh, whole heart and went straight from being sliced to the dehydrator. You are right that those are the FDA recommendations, but they also say you shouldn't eat rare steaks but fifteen bug parts in a tablespoon of peanut butter is perfectly acceptable without cooking. Like most USAgencies, it's probably more about covering their own asses than about it being a serious issue.
