Would anyone be up for some kind of a group buy for an /out/ patch/badge?
I'm not even sure how we would go about this, it's just an idea for now. It doesn't even have to be specific to /out/ or 4chan necessarily like some of the other boards projects, just a cool design related to the outdoors maybe. Anyway, if there's enough interest we can start brainstorming ideas, finding out suppliers etc. otherwise just let this thread die.
I like the idea but I get the feeling that /out/ has too many people who look down on anything tacticool or milsurp to get momentum for this.
Do a decal. I have one from /k/ of a guy running innawoods with an SKS
I'm down, /x/ has a ring, /k/ has a patch, what can we use? I like the patch in the OP though. How about some sort of hat
im for some patch like /k/
to make it out would suggest some kind of animal
since im not a draw fag and can only eddit
but something like this maybe ?
also what our slogan ?
version 2 to get some draw fag inspired
this time more of a retarded bear version haha
This guy gets it.
I think our Shit has to have leather. if not, I'm down for a fucking pine tree. let's ripoff the Forest Service logo? I also like like the the Fox with the knife patch like the anon above, but seems rather busy.
I don't want a decal because I think sewing something onto our packs would be much better
imagine meeting another fellow /out/ist during your AT Thu hike because of that patch. let's make that happen people
Have a look at this Mora. It's possible that with enough money we could get Mora to do something like this for us.
But, for something like this you'd probably need to buy at least a hundred units. (I really don't know.)
Possibly that would be feasible for /k/ but not for us. Unless some moneybags anon wants to sit on 90 Moras after we buy the other 10 from him.
>I also like like the the Fox with the knife patch like the anon above, but seems rather busy.
It's from Metal Gear. I'd really rather not have any vidya shit on my pack and risk attracting /v/irgins.
Just fucking about with some ideas. I quite like Sc/out/ proficiency badges but I dunno how someone would prove they've actually done the task to acquire one.
yeah i share your concern, while i really like the logo i dont't want it to be to similar thus recognised.
on the other hand how big is the risk of some /v/irgins to go out, then see it, the have the curage to talk to you
and even if its still a fucking good game (though i only know it up to msg 2 / solid)
maybe if we butcher it enuff ? like pic related,
but i think to many colores or complex schapes can kill the looks. also the more colores the harder/expensive to produce /stencil etc
certainly there are more talented people then me and my horrible taste and ms paint skills. pls come out of your caves ;__;
>i'm 14 and i want to go to alaska and live like chriss mccandles, help me /out/
>wild qt 3.14 approaches
>"oh hey anon, I love your getup, are you going out?"
>yeah, a couple of buddies and I are going on a 5 day hike
>"cool-- say, what is that badge? Were you with the boy scouts?"
>no, it is a symbol of an outdoors board on a japanese message board online, known largely for hacks, cp, and gore
>"oh... that's... nice... and your friends?"
>I met them there
>wild qt 3.14 approaches
if were going to not make a 4chan badge because of things that will never happen then why would you choose something so banal, you're better off saying a wild ray mears approaches at least that would be exciting
So put forward some ideas that AREN'T in-jokes. Even if they're shitty ms paint jobs or pictures of patches you do like that you've found on Google. ANYTHING. Better than just saying "not this, not that. nope. I'm out"
if they don't have in-jokes or references to /out/ then there's no point in making an /out/ patch
people want a patch that other's from /out/ have but don't want to be recognised as 4channers that makes no fucking sense
if anyone here has expereience with the /n/ jersey projects they'll know the first thing that needs to be decided on isn't a design, it's what we want to accomplish
do we want something that is a jokey memey patch or do we want something subtle but still recognisable or something else entirely
then we can move onto the design which means setting a colour palette so we don't get too many varying designs which will make voting on the winning design much easier, size comes into play here aswell which is something no one has mentioned yet
at some point we need a manufacturer which means we'll need a project leader who will be responsible for all communication with them because no company wants questions from dozens of anons
i love the enthusiasm itt but it's not aiming at anything and it will soon peter out if we don't do this properly
if this idea is to come to anything it needs more than passion and ideas it's need someone to steer the ship and until someone volunteers to do so we're just messing around
>people want a patch that other's from /out/ have but don't want to be recognised as 4channers that makes no fucking sense
It makes perfect sense. If it was a design collectively agreed upon by /out/, is only owned by people on /out/ and would only be recognized by /out/, then it is an /out/ patch.
I guess we need an honest vote on the matter (no samefagging)
I vote for not having "/out/" specifically written on the patch, personally. And it not being directly related to /out/ or 4chan. A subtle in joke would may be acceptable but it would depend.
Couple reasonable slogans to indicate these are /out/ related patches while still being somewhat subtle of it:
Sc/out/ (as recommended from earlier post)
Perhaps not the best list, but there are a few gems in there to choose from.
>It makes perfect sense. If it was a design collectively agreed upon by /out/, is only owned by people on /out/ and would only be recognized by /out/, then it is an /out/ patch.
but /out/ is part of 4chan and the reason we're here and not on r/outdoors is because 4chan is where we prefer to be
I intentionally left Bug/out/ because of the spite people on this board have in regard to "bugging out". I personally enjoy putting together scenarios and gearing up towards surviving in a SHTF situation, but we are the minority here. The majority don't care for it, and would deny the idea of a "Bug/out/" patch outright.
>no reference to /out/ 4 chinz
sooooo you dont want a out patch (or whatever item)
but you want generic "leave no trace but its ok to shit in rivers patch" so its not recongised but yet has out humor... ?
kinda defeats the purpose of a patch,
also i dont think that 4 chan is a terrible comunity (unless you only visit pol/b/out )
and since out is such a small board i dont think many would reconise if you pass them on the trail.
So it seems like a few of you like the idea of an /out/ Bic. How about something like: www.logolighters dot com? I don't know, we just need some drawfags to to make some shit and then we choose the most popular drawing to go on the lighters?
still too busy/detailed
i'd want pretty much just the silhouette of the image in the sticky
and i don't mean to be a dick, you are doing much more than i am capable of and i thank you for your time, just saying
my understand of custom lighters is they basically manufacture a plastic sticker and apply it to the lighter so an even cheaper option would be to produce stickers and apply them ourselves
sure they might not last as long but how long does a lighter last anway?
we'd be better off with more stickers for the same price and being able to use them on many lighters
better, but still not really what i'm after. look at the pic in the sticky again. for some reason your bear has some weird look on his face/head tilt. if you had him positioned just like he is in the sticky, then a straight solid-black (or white) silhouette would still make him clearly a bear, but without so much detail. same for the picnic table.
look at >>461745. barely any detail, but you can still tell exactly what's going on. "elegant in its simplicity."
something simple/minimalist like pic related
keep in mind its just a very rough concept
I did the slats on the table, can someone else do the table supports
I vector'd it.
Feedback and ideas welcome. Does it look better with the dividing line between legs? Tempted to also add light definition to the inside of the ears.
Color combinations are endless.
Just sayin, this is why an anonymous internet forum is infinitely more creative than a board of highly paid artists. Two days, and we have a very clean, simple, and usable piece of vector art that is far less busy with feeling the need to "include" everyone's ideas.
Another variation on the theme. Centered the face because it looked weird off center with eyes. This is far from complete m8s, it's more of a first draft so keep bouncing ideas off each other and we can evolve this until it's perfect and most people are happy with it. I can do mock ups of anyone's idea to gauge reaction. Want a pine tree in the background? Just ask. Although I tend to agree no txt and simplicity is better.
However, I'm currently packing for an /out/ing starting tomorrow and won't be back until Monday so if there's no response don't think I've lost interest. Keep thread active and keep discussing ideas. If it reaches bump limit (nearly halfway there already!), someone make a new one. I'll catch up with the progress and maybe update the design etc. when I get back.
I suppose I could upload the .ai file if you guys wanna fuck around with it whilst I'm gone.
I like it. It would look good with a tree in the background I reckon. I found a website that prints custom patches. Could be done pretty cheap, but they order in bulk. Link not available because I'm on my plebPad and it's too difficult.
2 more. Inspired by the OP patch and this >>462471 anons stellar work. + Sc/out/ proficiency badges sans txt.
Anyway, see you guys Monday. Keep this shit active!
The more I think about the sc/out/ badges, the more I like them. I could get the alpinist and shelter badges, but I am not excited about the drink your own piss patch.
I could see me convincing myself that it was my last sc/out/ badge and to complete it, maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I drank a lot of water and then pissed....
Nice idea but that's gonna be crazy expensive to produce. I know there's not many of us on /out/ but lets say we get 50 of each so we've got some spare. That's 350 straight away + 50 x however many more proficiencies we can think up. Unless we can buy proficiency badges 1 at a time from a supplier as people complete them to cut down on costs. But usually you need to buy in bulk. Realistically, it's not like 50 people on /out/ are going to climb a 13,000ft peak or thru hike a trail any time soon.
Think of it as an initiation challenge to become a true sc/out/. It's not like you'd have to neck a pint. Maybe a shot glass full?
Might make things a lot easier if we just pass the final design off to nugget (/k/'s milsurp if you didn't know) since they have the experience of making and selling patches. Just depends how you guys would feel about passing this over to /k/ and them having control of our patch.
If any /K/ommando's are reading this, do you know how you went about producing your patches/decals?
There's at least 2-3 anons on /k/ that I know of who make patches ... I have a humble collection from those guys. Generally they setup a Google docs page and link it with paypal for payments. As for actually getting the patches manufactured, I have no idea.
just swingin' by from /k/ to say howdy
if you're serious about getting those made and want some logistics help/info, you should hit up nugget enterprises or the crimson caravan guy - they've both done the patch thing before and one of them may be interested in stocking the design regularly
we're at square one and already people are talking about making mutiple patches
let's slow down and get a little more organised
the guys from /k/ with patch manufacturing experience could certainly help and if they also post on /out/ then that'll make the process much easier
Seriously? I believe you but I have literally only used an open fire to cook once. All other times it was those fishy hex stoves or a gas stove.
I was in air cadets for years and now I camp pretty frequently and everyone else uses stoves as well. Where are you from?
It seems like the whole "stove v. campfire" debate is just how you start and what you get use to.
There really isn't a clear cut better option, but like most things being able to do both is going to come in handy at some point.
If the mere presence of velcro on the back is enough to make some /out/ist sperg out and not buy it then that's his problem
I like it
Maybe something like this but he's wearing a pack and has a walking stick?
I also like this, I might like something with a bit more life as well though. I like the ideas of an /out/ version of the /k/ patches, but I also think it would be good to make our own.
This sounds breddy gud
I like this idea, it would probably be hard to pull off than a patch, but I like it
noice, I like it
I think nugget would probably be glad to produce it if we had orders already lined up.
I also browse /k/ and have no problem with the idea of bugging out, but I don't think it's representative of /out/ and therefore not a good option.
I love it, best option yet imo. Maybe a bit more simplistic art though.
too far in the other direction
We have a fucking winner. I would buy all of those immediately. Bottom right and middle are the best I think.
I think it was better without eyes, and with a solid background rather than the ground/sky line.
superb. I love them.
I think it would be better without text, or a different slogan. I don't have any suggestions for alternatives, though.
I agree. Nice idea, but physical patches would be too expensive to produce on such an irregular basis.
What makes you believe that? Seems like we have a pretty good spread to me, with most in the southern and western US.
Can you send your vectors to platatac.com and ask if they would do a small run patch of say 50. I think if we had 50 they would do a run for us.
Or I could just by 50 myself, set up a paypal and send to anyone who wants.
email for custom orders: email@example.com
Also can you make the vectors available to other sc/out/s online somewhere. Im sure we can make this happen.
yeah but europe is infinitely closer to europe than it is to the us so that's unfair
we're better off choosing somewhere that's no where near anything so everyone pays equal shipping
does anyone know of any manufacturers on the moon?
Depending on the costs I'd be willing to purchase these from the manufacturer and then distribute them among sc/out/s if shipping and production costs were covered for each individual patch. I'm in the UK so anybody in Europe would be pretty sorted, as well as North America as it's easy to ship stuff across the Atlantic these days. Not sure about Australia, but it's all handled by Royal Mail.
Prices for sending stuff via Royal Mail:
EU: £2.35 (€3.18)
North America: £3.48 ($5.37US)
Australia: £3.48 ($6.90AU)
Prices were based on shipping to France (EU) and USA (North America). Assumes that the patches weigh <100g with the envelope. Can get more prices pretty easy from the Royal Mail website. The USA and AU prices aren't the cheapest ones there, but they guarantee 7 days where are the ones which were like £2.50 guarantee 28 days.
Based on this link: http://www.mydogtag.com/accessories.php?cat=military_patches
All of them are going to weigh less than 100g.
So depending on production costs we're talking about $10US per patch w/ shipping if my baseless guesses as to manufacturing costs are correct. Does someone have a more accurate estimate to the manufacturing costs?
An alternative would be to have one person purchase the initial bulk and then distribute a number of them to individuals in other countries.
E.G. I buy 100 for the startup, send 50 to the US, 25 to Australia and keep 25 myself to distribute in the EU. Which would cut shipping costs considerably.
You have the same issue with shipping costs and crap if it's one anon selling to the world, so I think that you get an initial anon to purchase enough for the manufacturer to actually do it and then from there you send bulk packages out to individual locations (N. America, Europe and Australia) so that shipping costs are overall reduced.
I could send 50 letters to the USA for £170 or I could sent one package to the USA for £10 and then each of those could be further posted internally for like $1 each, which leaves the overall price at about 1/4 that of the price of someone in the UK shipping individually to the USA.
I've got an eBay rep of 36 on my current account and like 50 on my mother's account from before I was 18 (I was the only one using it but it was in her name).
Ive been mucking around on this site. This is for a 25 patch run. I just put a SS of a patch in, not a proper vector. $5.3 per patch, embroidered, velcro backing.
Someone with skills should play around an upload a proper vector file.
50 patch run, heaps cheaper.
I'm from South Wales. I don't really take part in the "debate", but from what I can see it depends on what you're cooking and also what you can do. You can't exactly make beef jerky with a jetboil, but for anything you stick in a saucepan the portable stoves are more convenient than a fire and probably do a better job of cooking the food, too.
Plus they're faster, more efficient and easier to cook with.
Don't provide any warmth however, and they're not so much fun as a nice campfire and you have to carry them around. So yeah, both have particular advantages.
Protip: If you find somewhere to make the patches out of PVC, they can be more detailed than stitching. Then the /out/ patch can be as detailed as possible.
oh shit, yeah. for the nerds that don't know, /k/ has two 'stores', with this being one, and nugget being the other. both are awesome, but crimson usually only sells things related to milsurp and /k/ meet-ups, so nugget is probably our best bet. the guy who runs it, Ivan, has been having some trouble keeping it open recently though, because he sells out of all his major stuff so quickly. just food for thought
>the guy who runs it, Ivan, has been having some trouble keeping it open recently though, because he sells out of all his major stuff so quickly.
I don't know where you're getting this from but that's bullshit.
Their warehouse was flooded.
Right, I'm back from my trip. Here's a few more designs for consideration if you think it needs something in the top left. I think it looks fine without anything there myself.
Which leaves us with these (imo) as the final choices. Unless there's any more ideas you guys want me to knock up? But these are the best one's I think.
Tough decision though isn't it. Maybe a run of each and then we can buy whichever one's take our fancy.
Why won't anybody take my money already?
I'm literally pulling it out of my ass.
Pick 3 designs and run them already! We can worry about merits later on when things progress and have certain patches for certain achievements, kinda like a Boy Sc/out/ organization. But getting these on the market sooner than later will give is an idea of how many are generally interested in buying them and if it's an even worthwhile venture.
I don't see you posting anything helpful either faggot. Sitting idle doesn't get shit done, telling people to do shit does. You must be a pleb cubicle worker. Get back to your TPA reports or you're fired.
the guy wants designs manufactured yesterday and we don't even have a design yet, how is he helping?
there's plenty of interest so we don't need him being a cheerleader
what we need is someone to take control and until that happens this is as far as the project will get
you seem to know your shit so how about YOU volunteer to be project leader and YOU can run the vote as to which patch/patches are chosen then YOU can decide on a manufacturer and YOU can liaise with them and sort out any issues that may arise
like anything in life someone needs to make decisions and be held accountable for them and until we have a leader we're a rudderless ship
so keep telling people to do shit while being unwilling to actually have the responsibility of telling people to do shit and we'll see how long it takes to get the patches made
btw sick office space reference, it almost made me not want to rant at you
Sit tight dude, the idea was only put forwards 5 days ago and a design hasn't even been finalized yet. Patience man!
Tempted to just get these produced:
50 of each perhaps. Then folks can buy if they want or not if they don't. That is, if there's no major gripes with any of them.
Fuck off you southern fairy.
Someone needs to make a patch with a fuckin roo with a fuckin snake in its mouth holding a fuckin tinnie next to a fuckin billabong under the fucking southern cross
Wheres Bruce when you need him...
This board is the absolute best at not feeding the troll.
I give you nearly child porn and all of you don't bat an eyelid.
Kudos, but I'll be taking my picture and making my own thread. Just watch me go.
I've posted in this thread several times and I'm sure several others have as well. In addition, one must take into account those who want one but may not end up buying one when they are actually made. Also, it's better to have too few and have to do a second run than to have too many and the person who puts up the initial money becomes SOL.
Just letting you guys know, I've sent this design to a supplier for a quote. They work out to be $2.5 (£1.62) each for 50. So that's what they'll cost you guys to buy + postage.
If they turn out nice then I'll do a run of the other two designs as well.
Maybe. But this will cost me $125 with no guarantee I'll see my money again. For the other designs as well, we're looking at $375 total. If they sell out, then we can order some more. But I want to see if 50 will sell first.
Also, adopting a trip for the purposes of selling these things/keeping you guys informed etc.
how big of a patch are we talking 3"? I am considering sending this to the studio to see what patches will cost for those of us here in the United States.
I think a 3" patch is about right, I am not a fan of Velcro on the back as has been stated above
OK, I just talked to the patch company. They can do the 3" bear patch for 3.54 each for 50.
I can front the cost for the 50 if enough people can confirm they would send me $5 as a check or money order and I would drop the patch in the mail, USPS, no international.
I'm off /out/ for a few weeks and another patch thread finally starts up... I'm down with this design, if you provide some form of private communication (email etc) I'll put in enough money for a few patches
I've contacted a few companies and the cheapest (and most realiable) quote I got is through platatac.com
For the bear on picnic table vector (>>466162), full embroidery, 75mm, velcro back or sew on, we can get it for $4 AUD for a 50 patch run.
I'm willing to fork out the $200 if enough Aus/kiwifags want some. Let me know your pref on velcro or sew on.
2.5x2.5", no backing. Sew on only.
I haven't sorted out a payment method yet, Paypal would probably be the easiest but I don't really want to give out my name/email so will have to look into creating a 2nd account specifically for the patch if it's possible without using my real name.
I'm in Europe, so if an American and Aussie anon want to take charge of their continents then that's ok with me I guess but you'll have an issue then of all the patches not being the same size/quality if you produce them elsewhere and it might confuse some people over who's the legitimate seller. If you want, once they arrive I can post some to you guys in bulk and then you can distribute them to local anons so the patches are consistent across the board. Like >>464469 suggested.
Alternatively, I really don't mind sending them all out myself but it does mean Americans/Aussies will pay slightly more for postage.
But whatever, the designs out there now, do whatever the fuck you guys like with it.
