It's summer and everybody's windows are down and shit. Wtf,

>>

>>
>>1010933

Yep. Just be sure to play them a little depending on size and amount of cover. Most fish don't put much pressure on the line when running. It's the surges and flipping when you try to land them, the getting wrapped up in branches and weeds, and other stuff that gets you.

Finally got some good time out on the kayak this weekend. I've got a 45 lb thrust trolling motor mounted, and some stabilizer floats on either side to even out the weight from the motor. It's slower than I hoped due to drag from the floats but still gets me across the lake without having to paddle. :^)
>>
So I spent the morning fishing with some researchers trying to catch american shad. We fished the dam that holds a fish ladder and part of the study is to figure out how many shad are utilizing the ladder.
Basically catch shad, insert a chip in them, and that chip is activated when the fish goes through the ladder.
We ended up with two shad, a good day since it's not rare for them not to get one.
Holy shit those things fight. No wonder since they gotta swim so far upriver. Maybe next week ill hook one and do my part for research.
>>
do these fishing generals generate 90% of the traffic on this board?
>>
>>1010933
you're worrying more about the line getting sliced up from cover in the water and the pike's teeth than just the weight the fish puts on.
Think about where you'll be fishing.

What weight lures do you normally throw? You could go up some from 10# if you aren't throwing super light stuff.
>>
>>1010960
You probably know this but just to make sure you know how drag works right? Even if you have 2 pound test you can still catch a >2 lb fish since your drag lets go of line before the breaking point of the line.

I hope you hook some nice fish.
>>
>>1010941
The wind out where I am was brutal today. I really shouldn't have taken the kayak out, but I did.

The trebles on the shadow rapala, every clean hit was on the forward hook, and then the middle and back dig into the gills, scales, deeper into the mouth. Shits frustrating and ruins fishing when I'm playing operation every time I get a fish

I did that once on the american river, since I had a passenger van they paid me to drive and fish. 7/12 biologist girl was looking 9/12 after a long day of driving and walking to spots. we caught most of our fish when the sun dropped lower in the sky. I ended up with couple bottles of procure scent and around 40 shad darts from sponsors. shad fight and some of them get big as fuck. fun fish to catch and theyre good smoked.
>>
>>1010964
Super light stuff. Typically 1/4 oz Rapalas, all I ever get are bass instead. Should I try bigger?

>>1010970
Yes, thanks though. Recently got back into fishing after a break of a few years, so I'm still rusty. Lost a bass a few weeks back because I got too excited and wouldn't stop reeling. Figured heavier line might help but I guess it's my technique
>>
>>1010989
Try not using lures with trebles.
>>
>>1010998
Im not sure that reeling in causes line breaks? I do it plenty myself. Maybe the line on your reel needs replacing, as you stated you got back into fishing
>>
>>1010998
I personally would go with 20lb for 1/4oz stuff, but not any higher on a spinning reel. I have a medium rod I throw 1/8oz shaky heads + worms with 20lb and I never feel like I'm lacking distance.

10lb should be more than strong enough as long as you aren't fishing super heavy cover though. 15lb is a pretty good median between the two if you can't decide. Like most things in fishing, line is a personal choice, there's not a hard and fast wrong or right way to do it.

For example I use 15lb Suffix 832 to toss 1/32oz jig heads around and I'm sure some people wouldn't even consider using line that heavy for stuff like that.

You would be suprised how strong 10lb braid is. Gar I hooked last weekend was on 10lb, some good sized sneks have been landed on that, and I pulled out one of my biggest peacocks (not huge by any means, but fought hard and came out with a huge pile of weeds and muck) on 10lb braid. Just make sure the line is in good condition.

>have idea for you

switch the tail hook to a double. drill a small hole where the middle treble hook will lie flat and epoxy a earth magnet in it, snip off one of the points on the treble and it will ride on the lure for less gill fouling...
lots of striper lures people remove the tail hook and replace with a feather teaser for the same reason.

Depends on what you mean by weeds if it's like hydrilla then I'd def want heavier but just little stuff I wouldn't worry. Just go with your gut. I'd feel bad if I told you to use (x)lb test and you didnt like it, especially since braid is so expensive.

Go to Walmart, Bass Pro or Cabelas and get a $50 spinning rod/reel combo. Put some 20lb test braid on it. Walmart has some premade catfish rigs that are great for beginners. Buy some medium sized treble hooks to put your chicken livers on for catfish. That's what got me started fishing. I'm just starting to get into bass and crappie my self this year so can't really help you there.

>>
>>1011438
I like them for Pike because it gives me better hookup rates and their mouths are long. But for bass I find that the trailer hook just gets caught in the back of their throat or into their head thru the roof of their mouth. So use for big toothy fuckers. Don't use if targeting bass

Throw a lure in and find out?
Sometimes a place on a river might look good but often it just has no fish in it at that time.

Also I cant really see if it's actually a deep hole or not. Maybe cause its a picture. In person you can see if it's deep better with polarized glasses. That river looks big so there's probably better spots for the fish than that shallow spot.

Fishing a big river like that means it's essential for you to get in the water and find those holes.

I can't help you with the Trout or Perch really. Buy the Pike it all depends on the time of year.

If they're shallow then I'd be chucking spinnerbaits at the shoreline and reel them at varying speeds. Or throw a topwater lure along the shoreline if there are no weeds floating around. If weedy then throw a top water frog or one of those top water spinners.

If the Pike are running deeper then use a Perch imitation type lure and I promise you'll out fish any dumbass chucking meme presentations or fancy colors. A smaller Pike imitation jointed crank is also a good producer for me.

I'd pay attention to the weather, seasons etc and familiarize yourself with how Pike react to such variances. Air pressure is also a huge difference maker friendo.

The big Pike are the ones that you should he chasing but the smaller ones will always be accessible closer to shore. No matter Tue temperature or conditions really.

I take an annual three week trip every year to Ontario with my dad brother and uncle so I really get into the larger Northerns. I'm not much of a live bait guy for anything other than catfish but I'd bet other anons will give you advice on that.

There aren't any perch where I fish but I just caught three snake Pike with a bluegill imitation crankbait. Going natural is always a good bet on any body of water. Especially overpressured ones.

You gotta try dem Mini Mites for panfish one day. They are incredible for some reason.
>>
>>1011686
I almost got you a 6 pack of meeps.
>>
>>1011736
Those are basically grubs but with paddle tails right?
Im about to try a lot soon. Sorry to shill but chuck and debs is probably the best site to buy cheap plastics like this and I highly recommend for folks that fish them.

Based off of how diverse these lures all, and how I hear how so many of them work, ive learned that it doesnt really matter what the lure is as long as it swims straight but has some action. Even color doesnt seem to be a major trait.

Kek, spinners are small at least so I can fit hundreds in a single 3700 box.

>>1011762
Pretty much. They are small too, like 1/32oz or smaller. Some days panfish will rip at anything including spinners or cranks that are almost as large as them. Other days they are picky but will always hit something really small like a bug. Those Mini Mites always slam panfish, even on days when they won't hit a tiny 1.5" Gulp minnow.

I bought two packs of those mini-mites and couldn't understand how to work it right. I was trying to hope it along the bottom but it sinks so fast it would just squish down into the soft bottom and the fish could even see it. Only time I could get a fish to eat it on the initial fall after casting it out
>>
>>1011799
Really? I mean they fall kinda quick but they are so small and light that even smaller bluegill normally have no problem snatching em up. If they don't grab it on the initial fall, they normally hit it after a couple small bounces on the bottom for me.

what finness stuff should i try along muddy bottoms and grass? ive tried drop shot but would like to try something else

also how do i know when my line has hit the bottom? especially when casting farther out, i cant feel that light tick of the weight hitting the bottom

I have 8lb mono on a medium/heavy action rod, do I risk snapping and losing a fish and lure if I try to fish for steelhead trout?
>>
>>1011861
>especially when casting farther out, i cant feel that light tick of the weight hitting the bottom

Watch your line. It should be tightish while it's falling then once it hits the bottom it'll go completely slack. You can feel it (the weight of the line not the tick from the weight hitting anything) with heavier lures, but with light ones it gets hard to feel.

Today's lunchbreak catch (also got a bluegill). Pretty annoying that some of you dicks (not literally you guys I hope but still, you know what I mean) literally tear your treble hooks out of the faces of fish like it's nothing; leaving huge, bloody holes like in their lips like on this fish (small single hook on a #6 fly is what I got him on, other side of the mouth).

Please be nice to our fish pals.

While I agree with you, I've read that fishes mouths heal relatively quickly, so he shouldn't be like that for life. A lot of the time the bass will cause the hole during the fight it's not necessarily from removing the hook.

>>

I think it's the case for hard bait since fishes hit hard bait but let go really fast because texture feels nothing like real food. Therefore, all the hooks are there so that it hook in any angle the fish hit from. Hard bait are also big and a lot of them are moved fast so fishes don't complete thing in one go. A lot of times, fishes will try to take the whole thing in, but miss and only grab part of it, then take in the rest later.

The fact of the matter is that multiple treble hooks greatly increases chance of hookups. Like another anon mentioned above, lures are very unnatural so a fish will spit it out almost immediately. Where as a single hooked soft plastic feels more "natural" so they'll basically swallow it if they get the chance...
It's not the hooks that are ruining fishing. Direct your anger towards the bucketheads.
>>
>>1012121
Plus fishing deep divers from shore is just asking to lose your $$$.

Certain places with certain lures, the lip is long enough where you can just bounce them off the bottom. But you really have to know the spot you are fishing.
>>
First time ever fishing a river and caught nothing.

Lost 3 lures though, one of them on a fucking fish too.

Overal was shit and I am disappointed, what do I need to be successful(that isn't fly fishing)
>>
>>1012193
Patience. Talk to locals about what the fish are hitting on. Learn to tie better knots. Losing lures is part of the game.
>>
>>1012193
I fish in a river that is full of snags and logs, and I've lost a ton of lures too. Instead of risking a lure, I mainly fish with nightcrawlers. I would much rather lose a bit of line and a hook over an expensive lure. I usually get better results fishing with worms as well. The rig I use is a single hook with the worm and one or two split shot 12 inches from the hook. I just let it float down the stream past any areas where I think fish might be. Once I've cast enough in a part of the river I get an idea of what the water is like, how deep it is, where the snags are etc. Only then will I fish with lures.

Another technique I use is attaching more weight than usual to my line and letting the worm float down to the bottom of a deep hole in the river. I catch a lot of suckers and bullhead this way. I wait with my finger on the line to feel any bites. Watching the line helps too, you can see it tighten up when a fish is biting.

I can give you more advice about fishing rivers if you want. I'm no master, but i've caught my share of fish out of a smallish river. I had no idea how to fish a river when i started but i learned, mainly by trial and error.
>>
>>1012098
If it's a fast river with a lot of rapids, you want to fish in the slow moving pools. If it's a slow moving river, you want to fish near, but not in, rapid areas. Immediately before and after. There are a lot of ways to work a lure, you have to experiment until you find what works. There's a trout fishing guide in the pastebin that might be helpful.

>>
>>1012092

Pretty much this. Unless you have a fish/depth finder telling you exactly where fish are, or see slicks/feeding on the surface, all you're best fishing is going to targeting cover in shallow water. And sight casting in shallow water.
>>
>>1012124

Lots of hard lures use treble hooks because they more often get reaction/anger strikes where the fish really has no intention of eating the bait. I know also I use it when catching pinfish and croaker and other "nibblers" that rarely take the whole bait.
>>
Hi. I recently bought some land in north carolina with a 3 acre pond on it. I'm looking to stock it for both pleasure fishing, and the rare fish fry. But I also have some snakes on the property i want get off the land (I hAve ltitle kids and protective dogd). Any fish species that is a good "snake hunter" on the pond for some of the smaller snakes? Also what would be a good mixture of species to stock for fun fishing with my daughters?
>>
>>1012288
Bass will eat a snek now and then but you are never going to get rid of them just by having fish that will eat them.
>>
>>1012288

I'll bet you any amount of money that all those snakes on the water are harmless water snakes.

If you're concerned about cottonmouths, the key is to understand that they actually spend most time on land. They can swim on top of water, but can't even submerge. They eat nearly aa many rodents and birds as they do fish and amphibians. So focus your efforts on removing land based snake attractants: old logs, brush and rock piles, flat boards, etc. And control your rodent population. This should help lower the place's attractiveness to >>1012288
other snakes as well.
>>
>>1012288
1.) buy a shotgun for sneks
2.) apparently it really pays to stock your pond over several years instead of dumping all the species into there at once so do your research
3.) but bass, catfish, and sunfish is what I would stock.

Bass and pickerel will both eat snakes, but you'll also need to stock bluegill, and maybe shad/minnows in there to feed the bass and pickerel, and catfish would also be a good species to have in there, mostly channel cats and maybe a few channel cats. Might be a good idea to put a couple dozen frogs in too

It's easier to be consistent with a bait caster than a spinning. It'll cast farther than a spinning reel (all else being equal and with a good memecaster). Higher drag pressure and less torque on the reel seat.

TXfag speaks the truth. Once you get it down, you will prefer a good memecaster over any spinning combo when you are casting anything larger than panfish baits.

Just stick with it. Like I said, after you get the hang of the brakes and spool tension, you gotta get the casting motion down. And when you get the casting down, you can crank the brakes and tension down and really see what they're about. It took me awhile to really understand the casting part after using spinning reels for a couple decades but it was worth it once I figured it out.

Also I updated the memecaster pastebin a little bit.

Topwaters are strange and I'm still not sure when to fish em. I think my best luck has been like late spring and early summer at dawn and dusk when the wind calms down but there is still a slight ripple on the surface. You gotta work em right tho, learn how to "walk the dog" properly.

Wait til you upgrade to something more expensive if you think that Sliver Max is smooth.
>>

>That isn't overkill 90% of the time?

Maybe 70% of the time, but being able to drag small trees out of the river with 40lb line has saved me enough money on tackle that I could by another one. Most of my gear is also duel purpose for salt and fresh, so having a bigger rig that I can use for bull reds and blacks or sharks is nice.
>>
>>1012572
Topwaters are goat over algae blooms. Especially in ponds where you can't really run t-rigs cause they just get caught in the sludge.

I think the Abu was def the right choice. Their rods on even the cheaper combos normally aren't bad. And pretty much everybody else who owns a SilverMax says it's a solid entry level reel. I can't complain and I would reccommend those reels to beginners because they are pretty forgiving. Once you start messing with more expensive baitcasters, it seems like they backlash much easier if you fuck up. They do cast better when you get it right, but not worth it when you are just learning.

I bought an ugly stick gx2 spinner last year, but I kinda bought it as "the last rod I'll ever need" so I got the heavy action huge 20lb monstrosity. And then I ended up putting 6lb mono on it. Overall it was a pain to fish with and I wanted something lighter and more controllable.

I tried trout fishing with the ugly stick and I couldn't feel a damn thing, odd that such a heavy rod would shake and pull so much

do you skish? truthfully you need to figure out what kind of fisherman you are and if you need a fully sealed reel.
vs's are well made very functional reels for people that need a fully sealed reel or if youre lazy about keeping your gear clean and fish the beaches. You will most likely never have to service it, except for lubing the handle and roller.. dont leave the torque 2 out of your fully sealed reels to check out.. theres other options for surf reels that arnt fully sealed but have enough o-rings and seals that if youre clean about your shit they will last quite a while in the sand and water (look at the clash, twinpower, saragosa, slammer 3)
downside is that vs's are heavy reels if youre actually ready to drop cash on a vs I would say look at a zeebaas reel instead. your arms will thank you for opting for a much lighter fully sealed reel. Ive fished both a vs and a zb for the past 3 summers and prefer the zb's.

I know. First memecaster. It's heavy as fuck and kinda sucks to fish with. But it works for throwing 1oz jigs or whatever. And that being said, the GX2 casting rods seem to have faster action than the spinning rods. Not fast like good sensitivity from a graphite rod, but the taper makes it so the tip isn't so flimsy.

>>
>>1012759

What matters most when choosing a kayak is your size, experience, needs, and THEN you choose kayaks that meet those needs and choose the cheapest.

Kayaks vary greatly in capabilities through the price range. You can buy one for 300 bucks that's awesome or spend 1k on a pretty shitty one.

I found the sun dolphin 12 pretty crap. Didn't care much for the perception pescador either. I got the perception striker for 450, but my eyes still wander.

So how big/small are you, what kind of water do you fish, how much kayak experience and skill do you have on kayaks?

I got the field & stream eagle talon 12 from dicks sporting goods. It goes on sale for 400 - 450 occasionally. It's pretty good, but I wish I had bought one of the Ascend kayaks from bass pro instead. Those have much more room on top and have a more stable hull design (so you can stand), but those also cost about 600 minimum.

I tried it alongside the striker. I'm 250lbs and had little kayaking experience and the striker was way more stable to the point I could actually stand and toss a cast net from it. It's actually got me trying to lose weight so I can really carry on in it.

The pescador is a bit faster and tracks better, but I find I never paddle more than a mile or two at a time. If I did, I'd get a drive kayak... which I'm saving up for anyway.

The stability was the biggest issue for me.

how do I cast far on a medium action baitcaster?
for instance I can reliably cast a 1/4oz Mepps maybe 20-25ft, but if I try and dial it up even a bit it all goes to shit.

Is there physically a limit to the distance a lure can travel before it backlashes?
Or just in time I'll be able to turn the brakes to 0 and the tension 100% loose and chuck any lure 200ft?

i would suggest going heavier to start.

>Or just in time I'll be able to turn the brakes to 0 and the tension 100% loose and chuck any lure 200ft?

I would never turn my brakes to 0. I tried that once and that was a terrible idea, but the spool tension should ideally be as close to 0 as possible. The most important thing is to be smooth. You can't really whip it around or try to muscle it. You have to let the rod do the work.

>>1012991
Hey no problem man. I figured you already had some natural colored lures, so I'd give you some color kek. I've had luck on those purple/chart ones, but I'd never tried the pink ones either. I wasn't too sure on weight the spoon should be, so I hope it's a good weight.

And yeah I wasn't sure on the eel thingies either, but I thought they looked neat and it might be an interesting one to try out.
>>
>>1012999
Lowest I can get is one centerfugal and very loose spool tension. Only thing I do that for is bombing frogs on heavy braid. Anything lower and everything goes to shit no matter how delicate I try to be.

Shit I forgot to add for that one fag trying to learn how to meme cast. What I did to help myself not loose line is I spooled up just enough line for a long cast and then a little bit more. That way I could keep building up to what would be a full length cast without having to worry about a bad birds nest and fucking your reel untill you get it sorted. You'll start to get better at getting birds nests out too if your patient and work at them. I would sit on the back of a pond for close to an hour sometimes plucking away trying to get them out and now I've gotten to the point where I rarely ever get them and if I do I can mend it in seconds. It's a pain in the ass that using one isn't as simple as flinging the rod like a spinning reel but once you get it down it's like riding a bike. You'll be able to sling baits further and a lot more accurately with less effort once you get gud

>>

>Hmm I was looking at one. Do you think it'd be any more stable for a hungry skellington like me?

Definitely. I mean, I wasn't feeling like I was constantly going to tip over in the pescador12 or anything. It's just that I had pretty much no hope of ever standing up in it the way I could with the striker.

Also, the striker came with a starboard mounted rod holder with space for other mounts on the port and center while the pescador only had space for a single mount in the center. I already have two scotty rod mounts on extenders and I'm looking for a fish finder for the center console.

do this rig but instead of a worm hook use a bait holder and use chicken liver instead of worms/shiners. Get fresh never frozen liver and it will stay on your hook very well, you're guaranteed to atleast catch some small channel cats with that.

>>
>>1013018
should i be using a bobber? how deep am i supposed to drop it?
>>
>>1013016
>>worms usually, shiners today

Worms are okay. Shiners too. Catfish really like smelly bait though. Chicken livers work well, but I catch plenty of decent sized catfish on dough balls on a treble hook too. Also, if you can catch a bluegill and cut it into head/body/tail chunks, hook the corner and catch some nice catfish. Bigger catfish become more and more predatory. Shrimp works too.

>>usually ones that are along 1.5 inches long, ill switch it up a lot tho just cus i cant seem to catch anything

On the pack of hooks, there should be a description and size. Like "baitholder hooks, 1/0" or something like that.

>>i've got those weights with holes in the middle, i throw them around the line before i tie it to the hook

Those are called egg sinkers. When you thread your line through it and tie the hook directly on so that the weight can slide freely up and down the line all the way down to the hook, it's called a "knocker rig" or "bumper rig".

For catfish, I would suggest a "fishfinder" or "carolina" rig. Get yourself a pack of small barrel swivels do what >>1013018 posted.

Or just fish them a foot+ under a bobber. I use the orange foam ones with a weighted bottom myself.

>>usually in the shallow parts or where i can see underground trees and stuff. again, ill move around just cause im not catching anything

Seems crazy that you haven't gotten a bite then. Are other people out there catching fish from the shore? Are you getting bites and just missing the fish?
>>
>>1013020
don't use a bobber and put the swivel/sinker about 12-15 inches up your line. If you aren't catching anything in shallow water try moving to deeper holes.
>>
>>1013016
M8 catch some bluegills if you can and fillet the fuckers. Use chunks of Bluegill as your bait.

If there are sizable Catfish where you are fishing then cut it in half diagonally as best you can and let that shit flap away. Hook it through the roof of the mouth in that situation.

I've caught some Bigass channels with that setup and decent Flatheads which are pretty fucking rare in Northern IL
>>
>>1013020

That rig is fished off the bottom. You cast it near wherever you think the fish are. When the fish takes the hook and swims away from the weight, the leader gives it a couple of inches/feet (depending on length) before it starts pulling on the main line, which is when you'll see it pulling on your line/rod tip.

i'd love to do this but i cant catch anything at all
>>1013024
i've tried carolina rigs, same result

i know a couple people around the area and i know for a fact that they catch fish, and i know its a good catfish lake as well

is the problem that i'm not using a mono leader? i've been using 12 lb braid i bought
>>
I snagged this through the eyes on a 1/3 oz spoon, I haven't been able to catch anything of respectable size recently. Last year I was catching nice pike on every cast in the same spot.

Does anyone know what this is? I'm in WI. There's also a bunch of fish jumping out of the water for bugs with red fins, I think they're brook trout but I can't catch the fuckers no matter what I throw at them.
>>
>>1013043
>when i see it pulling do i need to "set the hook"?

Usually if I see the line moving or a bump, I pick up the rod, open the bail, and watch it to see if the fish is just nibbling or has actually picked up the bait and is steadily swimming off with it.
>>
>>1013043
>i'd love to do this but i cant catch anything at all

If you can't catch bluegill then you definitely have a problem. Size 8 or smaller hooks, piece of worm, and just cast out.
>>
>>1013035
Well ideally it's going to be used to paddle to flats and wade, or long distance river trips that I'll be sitting for either way. I also want to be able to take the girl/ a friend with me and if we're gonna be wading it makes more sense to just use one.

I rented one a couple weeks ago and the seats actually weren't bad at all. I was worried my back would started hurting, but the only thing that was slightly uncomfortable was my ass falling asleep and I think if I add some more padding it'll be fine.

My priorities are more about tracking, speed, and being able to take someone else rather than just fishing from the yak.
>>
>>1013043
When you see the first nibbles just leave it alone, i don't usually set the hook until my rod tip actually bends down after the fish has been on it for a little while.

Catfish don't really give a shit about tackle so the braid isn't the problem, i use it all the time for leaders. You could try getting some mono for a leader and see if it helps but I think the biggest problem is the bait you've been using. Liver or cut bait fish are two of the best things you can use - minnows and worms don't really have enough stink to attract catfish.

If you're having problems catching blue gills get some small baitholder hooks and small corks. Put a piece of worm or cricket on the hook and toss it next to tree stumps, branches sticking out, rock faces, etc. There are always hungry bluegill around structure.

>>1012999
It's pretty tiny, I usually go for the 1/4th oz sprite. I've never used one with the fixed hook but I love that it's weedless. Next time theres grass floating everywhere I'm gonna try it out.
>>
>>1012999
different anon but i usually have a pack or two of those exact eels with me whenever im striper fishing
>>
>>1012587
The reel is good for a first baitcaster and I'm sure the rod will hold up just fine, if it feels good to you then it's good.

I recently ate some bluegill

It was the first time I ever ate something I killed and cleaned and all that. I only caught my first fish ever 3 years ago, now I'm consuming them and gaining their power.

Anyway it was tasty, I plan to nab some more after the spawn is over

when you start heaving a few ounces a few hundred feet spool tension starts going the other way. i know a guy who does casting competitions, his casts last several seconds and go 600-700 feet, and he actually adjusts tension while the bait is in the air, i think hes adding tension as it goes, its really funny to watch, and even weirder because he never watches his bait, but feels for it

For one that size it was most likely fine. Not super great for the guy, but I doubt you hurt anything. It's a lot more important to hold them completely vertical or horizontal (with both hands) on the bigger ones though.

Also when you buy a combo, is the rod normally most of the price or is the reel the nicer part?

For instance I have an ugly stik gx2 and silver max baitcaster, if I wanted to upgrade which parts would I replace, or are they all shit and combos are a mistake?
>>
>>1013521

Just look up reviews of the individual parts. Some combos are nicer than others but as is the case with any package deal in any hobby, theyre better for people starting out than for people who research and buy individually based on their specific needs/preferences. Newbies have fewer needs/preferences because they lack the experience to really know what does and doesn't work as well for them.

>>1013427
that guy's doing it right, if you hold the fish sideways without supporting the body it can dislocate, or on bigger fish, even break the jaw
