Everyone said they ride like shit, but that wasn't really a concern because I have other cars to drive on the road, and I'm not a pussy. And honestly, it drives fine on road, it's a little stiffer than stock, but stock was worn the fuck out so that's not even surprising. I think the 70-series Land Cruiser you can get brand new in Australia and Asia are SFA, but that thing really is an antique

Same goes for the Y61 Patrol, which is still manufactured and sold in certain shitholes of the world, and that does have SFA
>>
>>17847669
You could do a SFA swap. Been in a gen3 lifted taco and they're comfortable enough to maybe justify a solid front swap. Then you can go over any rock you want. The only problem is that anything you crawl over on 38s will chew through your doors if you want to keep up with the clubs. Even if you have autistically bubbled out roll cages, shards still get in.
Depends how much you value the look and resale value of your new truck. You'll definitely be the most comfortable rock crawler out there.
The price of doing an SFA swap could get you a YJ running 40s but don't let me stop you from something this cool
>>17847729
You mean the Land Cruiser 79 and 76 "reuploads"? Also, what are shithole patrols going for in the "certain shitholes of the world"?
>>
>>17847821
Aye, that'd be the ones

And I really have no idea - but I'd imagine that they aren't stupidly expensive, and I'd expect that since they are now produced in an aforementioned shitholes there is a lot of price-reducing stuff being done like no airbags, less luxury options, cheap plastics and such

Wow that's actually a surprisingly good idea. Gonna install a trailer hitch on the roof just for this. Need to make a note of that somewhere.
>>
>>17847959
Toyota did something a bit different by having essentially two lineups of Land Cruisers at all times; one that was more offroad-oriented, while another was more for luxury

The Y60 Patrol only came in one type, but you could equip it either like a farmers shed, or you could pour it full of equipment like rear AC, velour upholstery, loads of speakers, leather and so on

Y61 was much in the same way, but landed more in the middle-ground between offroad anc comfort; it sat tall, had relatively low gearing, proper transfer case, locking rear diffs, solid front axle and solid rear axle, but you could get every luxury comfort you'd ever expted in a full-size SUV like it

Two door Jeep. Why not just buy an FJ Cruiser since it lasts pretty well and has easily found parts for repair as well.

>>17848179
What part of them lasting? They have electronics that will turn off one at a time as you drive them for more than a decade but then again you really don't NEED adaptive crawl control or TPS monitors. Buy it, dip it in a galvinisation tank, and do routine maintenance and you should be good forever. Once it hits 300k, engine and trans swap it and keep it chugging along with the destroyed electronics from your river crossings, mud boggings, dust gremlins, etc.

How. The FJ Cruiser uses a similar everything to the Tundra and Land Cruisers. Rockauto, toyota dealership, any reputable mechanic can find parts for you.

If not, aftermarket toyota FJ places like crusierparts and other us based websites have pretty much the entire vehicle for sale piece by piece.

Get some decent tires and it shouldn't be a problem, unless it also has wide tires as standard, an automatic gearbox and loads of power

I run in RWD just about always here, with no weight in the back. I did experiment with having a good 450 pounds of concrete on the bed, and it sure did increase the traction - but I still get around no issue with nothing in it
>>
>>17848597
Why is that d-rating so important if I'm only going to run it in winter? Are the sidewalls at danger when running low-low pressure even on something like soft snow?
>>
>>17848613
The side walls had issues when aired down on mud against rocks and branches and everything. Then again, people were doing something stupid like 5PSI on their tyres.

I think D-walled are now standard on their tyres since wranglies had to up their game to deal with the fact that people kept popping their tyres and dealing with "warranty". But like most things, if you're going to spend over a grand on them, simply don't cheap out.

New to offroading never owned a 4x4, my dad owned a Patrol GR i remember being a young land and going up mountain roads, it was a beautiful machine, of course back then i didn't knew it, but no2 the 4x4 thing is starting to grow on me, first with patrols, then defenders and now the land cruiser 79, i watched a lot of Ronny Dall the australian fella he seems pretty cool, any other channels you can recommend?? I'm already putting money aside for an overland vehicle, don't really know what to get, the 79 series is pretty scarce in europe, i was leaning more towards the defender 130 with portal axles , so in the back i could build a small box in the back for the fridge etc. I don't really like the new oval shapes of the new toyotas the don't look rugged at all, where as the defender and the land cruiser 79 series look the part, and i know it's a very subjective thing but box shapes i lykeallot, that's why i have a soft spot for the g wagen but that's not a realistic dream it's too far out for an overland build.

Thanks for the help
>>
>>17849185
G-Wagen overland builds are only money because of the rare tax. You can probably get one hauled over from Germany for around $13 k USD of those old ones powered by the OM617.931. If you do that, swap in an OM617.952 for an extra $2000.

This will be more reliable and better suited for offroad than your Defender 130 and possibly be cheaper as well. As an overlander, you could get the Defender 110 but the gas prices would make this vehicle somewhat unreasonable compared to the initial investment (mainly time) in getting an old(er) G-Wagon.

This is coming from a person in the Americas. I'm assuming you're in Bongistan and not central EU snice you're eyeing the Defender instead of the more common Land Cruiser 70s/60s. So of course, the downside of the cheap(er) land cruiser / g-wagons is that you will probably find a LHD one instead of RHD.

If you can settle for a small oval shape, consider the Land Cruiser 80 or some of the vehicles we mentioned >>17848014 Patrol / Pajero / Navara etc.
>>
>>17849889
You'll find the majority of Defenders, be they 90s, 110s or 130s are diesel anyway. And I'd by no means rate a G-Class ahead of a Defender unless factory lockers were taken into account.
>>17849185
If you're looking at Landrovers, aim for an early mechanical injected 200TDi. They've got just enough grunt to pull the skin of a rice pudding, reasonably economical and will run forever. Being all mechanical fuel injection systems are cheap enough to upkeep. Plenty of folks run around in TD5s, but I would avoid it.
Another budget conscious platform these days are 2nd Gen Montero/Shoguns. Big overkill drivetrain in a moderate size SUV big enough to carry two people and everything they'd need for weeks on end. I'd aim for the 4M40T 2.8 diesel, which itself was designed as a light commercial.industrial powerplant adapted to a light 4x4. Or if petrol is more your thing the 3.5 V6 is the go. Avoid the 2.5 diesel and 3.0 V6.
Can't go wrong with a J80 Landcruier or Y60 Patrol either, depending what they're worth in your location. Either version with a 4.2 diesel speaks for itself, but the factory turbo diesel 1HD-T powered J80 would be the pick.

agreed. it's got the displacement, torque, and fuel economy to match. It's also an S-class overlander due to the space and the luxuries that toyota gave it.

>I'd by no means rate a G-Class ahead of a Defender unless factory lockers were taken into account
Depends which G-Class we're talking about. But he mentioned that a G-Wagon would be his definite choise and I was just giving him options he has in Europe.
I'm thinking of importing a two door Gelandewagon and OM617.951 swapping it one day (simple bolt on job with the trans and moving it a 14mm back with the mounts) to use it for rock crawling on 38 inch tyres or something. That's the dream. Or a Land Rover 90.

It's also the shear construction of the 1HD. Tear one down and you quickly get an idea of what they're capable of. Also, if you're chasing horsepower and want to stay mechanical, they already have a 12mm plunger equipped injection pump to begin with.
The "Silvertop" TD42 equipped to the early Y60 Patrols is another bulletproof unit that's more or less a miniature 6B-T Cummins. They just need a turbo manifold and a fuel pump upgrade if you want to chase big horsepower.

I have a great appreciation for the OM617 powered G-Wagens, but further than the motor I don't really know much about them. What sort of gearbox, transfer and differentials they run. Where as I know the Salisbury LR units, while they have their minor flaws from factory, can be built into a tough unit with very little outlay. The biggest thing I hate about Series LRs and Defenders is gearbox exchange requires half the interior removed and an engine crane. It's a reminder they really did originate from the Rover parts bin with a simple platform slapped up around it in a half assed manner.

Best of luck with the Gelandewagon dream.
>>17849185
Also, I forgot about the Isuzu powered Landrovers. They'd be THE desirable model. And the 4BD1 3.9 Isuzu engine would hold together better if you end up chasing a little more grunt. I guess the 200TDi is a good consolation.

The US has the market for the diesels that were overlooked in Canada simply due to the sales volume being so low. The shitbox gasoline FZs and FEs are what powers almost all the 80s in Canada with the diesels going for 2x the amount. That's why you see Cummins swaps and other diesels (like my reported OM617 swap) going into the FZs as life goes on.
The issue with higher HP output on the 1HDs is that emissions can get kinda rough here with messing with the injections, intake manifolds, etc. This and overcharging with improper boost could mess with your lines later on down the engine's lifetime. Not so much on the 1HD but on the G-Wagon OM617s, they can cause cylinder fails if you just turn up the fuel / air input without accounting for a few other factors. 1HD can handle boost pretty well from a turbo, though but at the cost of gas mileage, of course. This is why I'm opting for a smaller diesel to put in my FJ80.

Also yeah. Most of the good Nissan engines were modeled after tractor engines simply due to their lack of diesel engineering experience in trucks (IIRC). Patrols never sold in Canada (or the US, I think) and if they did, they were probably in the 1000s per decade due to special orders so you'll never see them or their components here. And the Nissan Titan wasn't released until 2003 and equiped with a V8 and later V6 and never got the massive I-6 torque that it could have had they been manufactured in the 80s.

Oh and on the 617s. I like the fact that the OM617s are a five cylinder. My first car was a five cylinder which is why I really wanted to put one in the land cruiser and sourced both an OM617.951 (turbo diesel and more solid construction capable of handing massive amounts of pressure) and an OM617.931 out of a 1981 G-Wagon. A few things are different on the G-Wagon and it'd be a monster of an engine if I were to keep those g-wagon specific parts of the engine to shop onto the more modern and capable OM617.951.
The .951s never really made good truck applications (not sure why) and were put in their lux sedans and faster barge vehicles because they could finally push their 4000lb solid barges past 180km. For this reason, the transfer cases were never really specialised to them and figuring out how to make adapter plates for the transfer case / transmission may take a lot of time. The G-Wagons are now too archaic for me to really read into their transfer case and gearing of the stock G300s. If I get a beaten stock G300, the first thing I'm doing is engine swapping it out and maybe getting a different transfer case with a set of other axles. They weren't meant for high strength rock beating in the front/side leafsprings. These people on the G-Wagon forums tend to try and restore old G-Wagons back to their original components for some weird, weird reason. They're uncomfortable and slow. Why.

The Canadian army uses a special turbo diesel i-5 g-wagon that I would absolutely die for. But they scrap them all with a contract under Mercedes-Benz Canada because G-Wagons need to have that status symbol and they can't have poorfag no-moneies buying up all their 2000 units they throw out every year and stancing them or some stuff. Bloody shame, though.

Land Rover maintenance can go to heck. That just makes me angry. Same thing with the Ram 2500 modern cummins how you have to remove the cab of the truck to get to the engine because they're way too heavy to lift out.

No argument here. If I was looking for a diesel Landcruiser option in North America, I wouldn't be looking at a factory Toyota motor. Even in Australia where they're reasonably plentiful, they're quite highly revered amongst the diesel tuning community and quite overpriced IMO. As an Ausfaggot I'd simply go with an N/A 4.2 1HZ (HZJ80) version and have the bottom end built with 1HD crank, rods and piston. You might miss out on the multivalve direct injection head, but the savings are worth it, and I'm not really after big power.
If I was in North America looking to repower a Landcruiser, I'd simply go with a 6.2/6.5 GM diesel. Been done heaps of times with absolutely everything required being off the shelf. There's also the Isuzu 4BD1 option, although I'm not sure how you'd go with adapters. There's a few J80 Cruisers running around the states with Mitsubishi 4D34s with the auto gearbox and transfercase out of a 4x4 Fuso Canter truck that pique my interest.

As much as I like the OM617, and most things Mercedes diesel for that matter, I just have my doubts as to how an older mechanical 3.0 diesel will go pushing a 2200kg tare SUV... Although it can't be any worse than the Y60 Patrols factory fitted with 2.8L RD28T... Just try find 4.6:1 gears if sticking to near factory tyre sizes, or around 5ish:1 if going near 33-35".

On the subject of military light vehicles, up until recently Aus used Isuzu 4BD1 powered Landrovers with an N/A version for the 4x4 and a turbo'd version for the 6x6. However the LR fleet is currently under going update with a switch to 3.0L CRDi V6 diesels.
At least here they auction their old cars off, and unlike the US they are legal for road registration.
>>
>>17851024
You're going to hate me for this and wonder why. But I'm putting in a VW 1.9L I-4 and doing a massive turbo upgrade. Then mating that to an older mechanical transmission off an FJ70 and using that to power my FJ80. TDI already bought and sent out to Vancouver for the computer to be modified to work with the transmission. We have limited options in Canada so we get very creative. (pls no bully. thank.)

GM was something I was going to do with odd heads off a Vortec onto a 6.2 or 6.5. Or a cummies swap. But the cruisers around here with a cummies on electronic transmission are having quite some issues so we'll see that.

The OM617 N/A ran 90HP and pushed along a 4800lb G-Wagon just fine in the 80s. TD OM617 (the 951 I keep talking about) pushes the land cruiser up to a top speed of 135km so it works. You can always upgrade the turbo like the Scandnavians do, anyway.

Hmm might be worth looking at Aus made Land Rovers for cheaper military spec vehicles. Something to consider. Could even swap out the whole dash and steering column and front axle off them to easily do a convert of RHD to LHD, too. "easily". sry.
>>
>>17851058
>I'm putting in a VW 1.9L I-4 and doing a massive turbo upgrade
O_o
I didn't expect that.
That's also what I like about the 6.2/6.5 option, is it adapts straight to factory gearbox, so here's no changes to any of the drivetrain and the teething issues that come with custom driveshaft lengths and angles.
I don't know how you'd go with Vortec heads on a diesel though...

That's a nice ride. I definitely think they are capable offroaders but i just like the Box shape aspect, they look ok but it doesn't shout at me "put a lift and big tires on me" where as the 70 series looks so dated i was surprised how the didn't do much to it, looks exactly like it did 40 years ago, now depending on your taste that can be a good or a bad thing. Seems about right for a reasonably build Defender. I still say you should go try to find a Land Cruiser FJ70 or 80. It'll be a third of the price and you'll be able to get the roofrack addition with a tent on top and a lot of your own personalised armour.

i wish i had enough cash for it, the plan right now is just allocating money so in about 4 years i should have the starting budget, everywhere i read the g wagen has reliability issues talking about the 2000 and onwards models, they seem pretty flimsy, and very expensive to maintain, even though i would love an overland G320 with portal axles i don't see it happening.

You should hate modern Land Cruiser J200s if that's the case, too. New money Saudis and generic urban families buy them to shuttle themselves around as well.

Get an old two door, chop it into an extended/access cab, extend the frame, and put a bed on it. You'll still have the short wheelbase but get essentially a box-style you like and the utility. The best part about this is that it'll cost half the price of a Defender 130 in both initial price AND yearly maintenance.

I'm also going to need a TL;DW on that video.
>>
>>17853504
Oh and the reason I'm especially salty about the Canadian Military destroying around 100-1000 LUVWs per year instead of selling / scrapping them is because these ones have the half-inch steel thick doors. They're literally built armoured for rock crawling but still passing for a civilian vehicle since they top out at 120km/h. The doors can probably hold up the weight of the vehicle so if you lift them on portals and run 40 inch tyres, you would have to try really hard to actually dent one of the doors. The only downside, I guess, is the fact that they have no crumple zones whatsoever since it's just fully armoured (for deflection, anyway) and covered in solid steel all around. Wear a helmet when driving at all times.
They're also rarely driven in salt since most of the scrapped ones are the ones shipped in from overseas in the Middle East / Africa.

AHHH AND THE BEDLINER STYLE MILSPEC PAINT THAT THEY USE. Ahhh I'm mad.

sounds like a plan and i Thank you for the advice, i still don't know if the chopping works here in yuropoor, don't think i can homologate that on the car's papers, but i'll keep my options open, the GELEN has a very weird appeal, also the only toyota i would buy on a whim is the 79 dual cab.

>TL;DW
A group of 6 or 5 STOCK GELEN's (the cars only had a small engine remap to give more torque in the low end) venture on one of the harshest (according to the narrator) australian outback routes, the canning route from Halls creek to Wiluna, 1000 miles of outback red sand, the shocks on one or 3 of the gelen just bust open due to the coregations (they are driving like fucking manians DESU) and they have 2 options pay 2k dollarydoos to overnight fly in new shocks or turn around and go back, they obviously get the shocks and keep on going, the only G that survived was the Military spec one i think it's called the professional, they also busted an AC (fuckin pussies using air conditioning ) and yeah the whole thing is just a mess, they go in ...... cont
>>

>>17853504
CONT.....with STOCK cars and on top they add weight without considering they height of the vehicle , stock suspension no reinforcements , i'm amazed they didn't break a fucking axle, it's fun to watch just because the host is a damn idiot. But as i was saying looking back on the video it's just more proof at how much abuse these things can take under the harsh conditions of straya desert roads, i was amazed so if you switch out the shocks , put a lift kit on it, bigger tires and a snorkel you are pretty much AOK since for 1000 miles the only IMPORTANT piece that broke was the rear shocks (and i'm pretty sure the cars would have made it out alive if they wouldn't have driven like lunatics )
>>
>>17853504
are those the same tires they use in the 6x6??? and the cube?? the ones that can be inflated from inside the cabin?? i think on a motor trend episode they said how much one rim costs i don't remember but i think around 1.3 k dollars just for one steel rim, no tire around (don't quote me on that)

The advice on the chopping was to illustrate that you could do insane shit with an older G-Wagon and still have it be cheaper than the Defenders (and maybe new J79 / Y61s) in terms of build price and maintenance. Don't do that frame extension as your first offroad vehicle, lmao.

>>17853663
>not carrying and entire in a supply vehicle as the middle vehicle during a 1k mi overlanding trip with 5+ caravan

Fuck off I need air conditioning. I swim in 5 degree weather because I hate people on the beach with me and the A/C goes on when it's 20 degrees centigrade outside. Anyway, the LUWVs in Canada are leafs front and back because they're much easier to fix innadesert when one hits an IED or some goat.

Not sure about the tyres. they probably use some sort of michelin contracted tyres with all around kevlar or something. But the wheels are classic Hutchinson Beadlocks for military. Looks like some sort of armoured variety, though. Or maybe G-specific.
they're around $800-$1000 in the states and you can probably find a set for around $3k used and maybe another 500 for spares.

>>17853695
Small engine. OM617 or OM603. Can't remember which one. They have nothing to choke. That's my guess anyway.
Remember that snorkels are very useful innadesert too because it keeps dust out of the airfilter and extends the life of the filter by quite a lot.

I guess each to their own. I've done the 70 series thing before in the flavour of an HZJ75 flatbed. I'd like to go back to another one day, but I'm more than content with the Pajero I have now and will probably have it for a very long time into the future.
>>17852042
Nothing over the top. Suspension height is about 35-40mm over stock and will probably stay that way, will upgrade to stiffer torsion bars up front and foam cell shocks all round.
The Pajeros already have a factory fitted "Trutrack" style torsen LSD in the rear which does a good job, so I'd like to go a switchable locker in front just to keep the functionality of the Superselect transfer case.
235/85R16 tyres, very similar to what LR Defenders and J70 Landcruisers run.
Basically it ain't going to be a rock crawling monster, but it'll be something that case head deep into the rough stuff and make it back home whilst minimising the risk of breaking shit.
Then just other little shit like finish the rear draw setup, roof racks, deep cycle battery and finish wiring up boost, EGT, oil pressure and water temp gauges.
>>17852129
Easily my choice of fullsize SUV. Just can't beat the modularity of the GMT platforms.
>>17852498
I've done the ARB "air leaker" thing before in a previously owned Landcruiser and they were a pain in the ass. Forever chasing leaking lines and solenoids with soapy water, and ultimately blowing an O-ring in the diff centre (constant air just pushes out the diff breather). If it had to be air I'd recommend looking at the TJM Prolocker, which does away with the O-ring design. You'll still have to keep up with air lines but that's not the end of the world. If you're not building a competition buggy and just a general use trail rig, I'd look at E-Lockers. They're not as tough a as air lockers, but much simpler operation.

To answer your question, Patrols are incredibly suited. The problem with them is they're like the go-to offroader in Aus the same way Jeeps are in the US, so they attract a lot of lowest common denominator dregs (not all of them, but an overwhelming majority). They have a false sense of belief and think they can drive through anything without any driving discipline, just because they drive a Patrol.
>>
>>17854289
Makes sense, i remember being young and before going up to mount the skiing gear my dad would still work on some custom chains he had made for the Patrol, he is kind of a diy guy, his stuff doesn't look pretty but gets the job done, next 3 days we ride around heavily compacted snow covering bitumen roads, never even had to engage the low/hi gearing i have very fond memories of that car, he isn't an offroad kind of guy but he liked the functionality of it, just being able to have the capability a sedan can't have.

It's also scary watching recovery techniques applied by said heros, usually involving a bungee snatch strap and a lot of loud pedal, with a complete disregard for safety. Straps slung from tow balls is more common than you'd think.

If he has the money, why not? I may look to buy it off him in 10-30 years once he passes it on to some newfag for a tenth of the price.

If it wasn't for the vietnamese gangsters and arab flex gurus 20 years ago buying LX450s, we wouldn't have gotten FJ80s in Canada and I wouldn't have been able to buy my Land Cruiser.

In any case, if he wants a snow roller, the above poster is right. Heavy. But if you get thick enough tyres, it won't matter. Snow plowers get 215s to cut through the snow. The scandanavians get like 315s to float on top (especially if you air down to like 10-25 PSI). In any case, an older Lexus LX would probably serve him just as well in terms of comfort but be 50% better in gas savings. Something from 2004 (after the stupid Lexus 470) to like 2012.

He wants maximum /comfy/.

>>17860135
He's running studed snows during the winter.
>>
>>17860166
Studded snows help on ice. They equally sink in snow. If he wants to rip across a lake in the middle of winter, tell him to get 315s and or a lighter vehicle so you don't accidentally get snow everywhere in your suspension and need to race against the clock digging it out before it sinks into the lake. (personal experience)

If he wants maximum comfy, a 4runner will do the trick, too. But again, buy the land cruiser to introduce more to the market. He won't be dissatisfied with the Land Cruiser, I'll put it that way.

Do any of you guys run CB radios? If you do what brand do you recommend.
>>
>>17860236
Just got one put in. Just go to your local radio shoppe and have them recommend one. They normally do a placement fitting and will help you find where to mount your radio in your cab and find a place on your body for the antenna.

Shouldn't cost more than $200 if you do it yourself. $250 if you're lazy and have the guy drill holes in your vehicle for you and do the wiring.

Had a rot hole on the rocker of my XJ a couple years back. I removed all the rust, took the whole rocker down to bare metal, and then repainted it with Chassis Saver, which I guess is like an undercoating. Now it's starting to form rust under that paint and it's bubbling pretty badly. I think I'm going to take it all back down to bare metal, spray it with rust converter, and then repaint it with POR 15. Anyone know of any products that might work better? Planning on selling the Jeep soon, but for now I want to stop this from getting worse.

>>17860305
Find some kit on amazon for under 150, find 7ft of wiring for the antenna, and if you can't mount a speaker, try and find a bracket that won't be too invasive. If you're just starting out, there really isn't that much of a difference between all of them.
>>
>>17858889
Ignore the asshurt junker pilots. They're the same as Cruisers of old, typically overkill drivetrain in a solid, well built and comfortable SUV. With KDSS they're extremely capable for a factory height SUV.
What variant is he getting? GXL, VX or Sahara? 5.7 3UR V8?
>>17860236
Icom. They're the standard in commercial and civilian 2-way radios. An honourable mention to Motorola too. What bandwidth does your region usually operate on? UHF here.
>>
>>17860236
Oh, also, keep in mind where you're typically going to use it and what antenna is required. On highways if you want range, aim for a higher dBi antenna like about a 5-6.6 and for forrest work with lots of hilly terrain and vegetation aim for a 3.5ish dBi.

He could do a hell of a lot worse. The advantage of buying a Landcruiser new is resale, even if others consider it overpriced. Something Range/Landrovers can't compete with.
The way I see it is the more older folk buying them new with the intent to look after it, the larger pool of second hand options down the track for folk like us.

I've gone up to three FJ80s around my neighbourhood this summer asking if they wanted to sell their vehicle. All old Asian couples driving it to the store to get groceries or do their banking.
Each one of them said that they bought it during their retirement in the 90s or early 2000s and haven't done anything to it ever since. It just keeps it running and keeps them comfortable.

Damn them and their never used diff lockers.

CB is easier to use because you don't need a license

Ham is better because there's more channels, less traffic, and not just anyone can use it

>>17861673
Cb limits you to like 40 channels and has a fairly short range say around 3-8 mi (usually lower) and you can only broadcast at 4w, but it's also fairly common to find other people in cars with CBs.

With Ham, (I'm going to assume your in the US and just get a entry level Technicians licence which is really easy),you can get a basic handheld (Baofeng UV-5R) for 25$ and you get access to the 2m and 70cm bands and then 10M with a separate transmitter, 10m can get propagated pretty much anywhere in the world depending on solar conditions, 2m and 70cm range in simplex (no repeater) is pretty much to the horizon so you get way better range if your high up relative to the surrounding terrain, if you or someone your trying to contact is on a mountain distances of 40mi are common with handheld setup and repeaters are pretty much everywhere so as long as you can get onto a hill you can probably talk to someone. As an added bonus most dual band transmitters are also capable of picking up non-trunked fire/police/ems signals and can broadcast on FRS/GMRS (walkie talkie) frequencies although it's not exactly legal, (see >>>/out/>>1088234 for commentary).

Really the only negative is that your much less likely to meet someone on the road who has a setup with ham since it's techy enough that it scares many people away but you'll pretty much always be able to find someone to talk to or call for help.

Hey MightyBenz. I was flipping through the 2010 Ranger manual and saw that they actually recommend Hypoid Gear oil for the front differential for some odd raisin. Seems like overkill for me but wouldn't mind extending the hoses and filling it with two bottles (as opposed to five 1qt bottles for my land cruiser) of hypoid and never really doing it again.

I was considering putting hypoid in my LC for harsh (-30 degree centigrade cold starts) winter driving but might consider tossing it in my Ranger since it's 2WD most of the time with an unused front differential unless in winter.

That's what I was about to ask, too. In leafland, it'd be unheard of not to have 1/5 people stop for you if you're in a ditch. Everyone's in an effing-poo-shitty- pooper duty or silveradoo-doo and will stop even if you're just taking a piss in the woods and parked your truck on an angle which looks like you're in a ditch.

I thought that would've happened on an interstate and not a smol town. I guess the dynamic is different in burgerclapistan?

I pulled a couple out 2 winters ago, in a huge blizzard we had in York PA. They were almost completely covered, plow truck had shoved a bunch of snow up onto their shitty Volvo SUV with bald summer tires. They were from Florida driving to Massachusetts and got stuck somehow on a back road 5 miles off of the highway. We barely noticed their vehicle in all the snow, found them just idling away, probably would have died of exhaust fumes since the snow covered just about everything. Had to dig them mostly out by hand, then pulled them out. Told them to hit up the nearby hotel since they weren't making it any further that day. We had a total of 2.5 feet of snow, fun times in my lifted suburban. It was so bad that when I got home that day all my neighbors were dumbfounded when I drove back in, they all have 4wds, and there was a solid 2.5 feet since they hadn't plowed yet. They all looked at me like I was crazy.

The worst is when you stop to help pull someone out then find they have no place to attach your strap, then it's like fuck I shouldn't have stopped, didn't want to actually have to push and shovel... LOL

Protip: exhaust extension in the winter, winch yourself to a tree and keep it attached, and pile snow on your vehicle as an insulator for heat. You can reasonably keep your car's cabin warm with your body heat to sleep in around 5-10 degree ambient temperature when the outside is -10 or -20

I did this in my Ford Ranger ext. cab. Might be different in a 4-7 seater. Just have more people or a sleeping bag instead.

The jokes about the fact that Tacos use IFS rather than having a solid front axle, with IFS you have two axles, one for each front wheels, so it doesn' span the length of the front of the truck and as such don't need to have the same type of axle seals that Toyota can't seem to get right.

My current XJ is slowly falling apart so I've been looking for a new DD. I had planned on buying something like a wagon or a hatch that would be more fuel efficient, but I looked at XJs out of curiosity today. Saw this thing and I'm thinking about going to check it out if it's still available. Should I do it or should I stick with the original plan and buy something that's better on gas?

If you have the few grand laying around, get your pic related and either OM617 or 1.9TDI swap it. Lots of writeups and you can expect mid twenties MPGs. Drive your current XJ in the meantime through the winter.

unirregardless, drive your current xj until spring because muh winter beater. who knows, you might come through a winter guy selling his vehicle for moneys post christmas debt.

So today I found out that ozzies can't modify or engine swap their cars. How do they get away with "modified" offroad vehicles with lift kits and winches and snorkels?

>>

Ah, yeah we do, often. Just has to be passed off by an engineer if it's a non factory swap, if you're going the legal route.
Plenty of LS engines, and various GM diesel V8s swapped Nissan Patrols and Toyota Landcruisers. Hell, we pioneered the 6.6 Duramax Y60/Y61 Patrol.

>>
>>17881366
Should read 210 all the time, once warmed up. Check the front of your radiator and see if it's clean, may have junk built up causing lack of airflow. If there is a condenser coil in front of the radiator, for the A/C system it would also be clogged up and causing issues. If you don't have working A/C then immediately remove the condenser coil then hose out the radiator. Also flush out all the old coolant and replace with new. Many shops have a machine they can use to flush the engine completely to remove all the rusty coolant water mix out. If you have the coolant flushed also have the thermostat replaced, they are super cheap.

Question
Utah fag here. I do a lot of shooting, because of this i go offroad a lot. I have gotten good at driving offroad with my civic but i need a better car for days like today with heavy downpour and heavy mud. What is recommended?
Pics my car
>>
>>17883791
You can always cut off the top and use it as a fiberglass form
>>
>>17884705
Not bad. If you're in flatlands like Utah, you can keep your civic. Just get a come-along and find tow hooks for your vehicle if you ever get stuck.

Realistically, because your state is pretty flat, any vehicle with large mud tyres will be able to accommodate you. 4wd or awd is a plus but may not be worth the money if you only do the flat roads that your stock civic can go on.

Well the thing is im right next to the canyons and the flatlands. For my tyres im running toyo extensa M+S. There are a bunch of large hills to get over and today i had to max power it up those hills going 3-7mph because of really heavy mud. Usually if its dry, i can get up no problem in a lower gear. But today was very troublesome and i was worried about breaking out the spade and kitty liter to get out
>pic car after fullday offroad with windows cleanish
>>
>>17885138
>breaking out the spade and the kitty litter
good job of having at least one recovery tool. but try and get some traction aids, too. they're only like $40 for a set if you can find them on CL.
2nd gear, crawl in and don't spin out

worst case situation, you lower the tyre psi to around 10-15 and crawl your way out as well. if it's FWD, only bother lowering the front tyres, of course.

In any case, are you actually cereal about getting a new car? Yours seems to be pretty good for the jobbie.

Happy Friday, anon.

Hey guys just wanted your advice on a possible purchase.

Would the truck help me? Yes. I need a truck for the winter plus I would like a long term vehicle. I'm thinking I should pass. Am I wrong?

>>
>>17885824
They are good trucks, get it, just make sure the transmission shifts well.

Those diesels will run for a long long time

Also fuck getting a gay ass 4runner, they're all junk jap shit...
>>
>>17885192
Browse local ads for cars that have been converted into a generator and see what engines people use. Then see if your vehicle can double as an idling generator for enough power to power an arc welder. This would be very helpful if you could find a diesel with an adapter. My neighbour's work van has something like this but for a 25 gallon air compressor instead.

In any case, almost any truck or SUV (even unibody or foresters) can get you around there with twice the MPG of any of the dedicated offroad vehicles available.

>>17886683
>those diesels will run for a long long time
and
gay ass 4runners and tacomas will also run fora long long time

What you should do is take a 4BT. You'd probably need a really big lift or just a D44 / D50 swap in the front. You can probably get a $5k 4runner and slowly work on it yourself and build enough money to work towards upgrading it.

In any case, you shouldn't be getting large investments with oweing $10k if you're in between work right now. Get to a better place first, anon.

Thinking of ripping out the ABS system on the Land Cruiser. 2 hoses going in, 4 coming out. I have no idea why in heck they made it this way but that's how it's built. Otherwise, I can just have 2 going to the master and call it a day.

If that thing is still for sale I would buy it over any Tacoma or S10. My friend keeps talking about how much he wishes he had a diesel 40 series instead of his fuel injected FJ62. Also his dad is actually driving this glorious thing almost daily on public roads now. He put small tires and an exhaust system on it for some reason though. I would buy a project truck but I'm pretty sure I'm about to find myself living out of hotels for a few years as an apprentice all over the province next year. I'll probably get a blue plated dirt bike to have some fun with. Haul it with one of those hitch mounted moto carriers whenever I have to move.

Here's a TDI swapped FJ40. One thing that I learned about the FJ60s and 80s is that the next one I buy will have to be from the deep south or put away every winter. The former can normally go for just under $9000 and you get the fun of driving it one way from the states up to Canada.
(or import it from Europe to get that gorgeous EU license plate)

How's the Tundra Tested winch? Mine's going strong still and I use it on average once every two weeks for hoisting cars, moving rocks, moving objects, etc. So it's loaded pretty darn often. not bad for $300.

>>17887957
Get a regular 1980s 300 and portal axle swap it. Will be much cheaper than these options.

definitely , was also looking for some central tire inflation systems, but they are all industrial grade, nothing commercial.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdNwQpJ_XCo
>>
>>17888028
Central tyre inflation system was rigged up with one of those air suspension things built on the land rover. Used a similar pipe, I think. The only issue is that they're notoriously unreliable and massive. If you want to remove your passenger seat, you might be able to fit it in your vehicle. Hose has to withstand 50 PSI and still be small, remember.

I'm looking to get a 10 litre compressor to work with my Land Cruiser battery setup. Might have to get two or three deep cycles for this reason. Maybe even build an A/C around it. we'll see where I am in January.
>>
>>17888060
jesus i didn't know it was that power hungry, also removing the seat is no problemo, it's just me and the dog anyway, i was just interested in it because it looks interesting.had no idea about them being unreliable. Yeah it's mostly a niche thing for specific application i mean if you wanna go hardcore it's nice to have.

Now that I can't make my own shit I have to buy this https://www.4wdfactory.com/store/products/S10-Winch-Mount.html which with my current ride height would mean the winch plate would probably regularly hit the ground. Moog makes an $80 set of springs for old big block fbodies that would lift the front end 1-2 inches but they're softer. I'm almost for certain now going to put 2.5in front lift springs in first

After winter I'll find a set of 235/75/15's or a similar sized all terrain that will fit inside my tiny wheel wells. That'll add a total 5.5in of ground clearance in the front and 5 in the back which I think would let me put my stock rear bumper back on without problems. Too bad I just have a ball hitch on that and no receiver. I'm pretty sure If I put in a 2in body lift with that lift I could clear 31x10.5x15's but that just adds another $500 worth of stuff I don't need to a 2WD truck build that could go towards a bike or 4x4.
>>
>>17888117
I'm talking about the specific commercial grade ones that I have seen in operation on construction equipment. Those are already pre-made and since they're mass produced (relatively), it'll be cheaper than custom made ones out there. In any case, just get a dual battery setup and run a 2 gallon compressor or one of those clutch operated ones from Warn for like $200.

>>17888130
You wanna buy my Ranger? I'm thinking of getting an imported Defender 110 long bed for work if all goes well in January...
Then maybe in 1 or 2 years, I can get a short wheelbase milspec G-Wagon from 1980s imported to learn how to rock crawl... Saturday afternoon daydreaming...

In any case, I just wouldn't put that money towards your truck in case random stuff goes wrong. It could even decrease your resale value if the buyer doesn't know the lift make. Better to keep the thing clean and without dents or modifications if you can. Or better yet, let it sit on Kijiji and see if anyone would buy it for 5000 or 6000.

Does it have that Inline-5 engine? I miss the cold starts in my 2010 Colorado. Sounds orgasmic for around 2 minutes until the engine warms up then purrs right along on the highway at a great sound, too. I do miss that thing from time to time.

I'll drive my brothers 07 FX4 Level 2 in a couple weeks and see how I like it. I'll keep the stock springs and tires anyway. And I'm not really offroading this anymore just going places cars can't and doing burnouts so body damage beyond the currently badly scratched paint wont be a problem. And it's the 4.3 V6. I cut the exhaust off just before the muffler and it sounds like a small block under 2K rpm and above that at WOT like a first gen NSX with a bad exhaust leak. It's great.

Don't have any pics of it. If I remember right from when I was still a Ranger nerd the 2003 FX4 is identical to later year Level 2's. I can't remember what exactly you got out of the Edge or later renamed Sport trim levels. Even after the level 2 was discontinued you could still option most of the stuff it came with onto a FX4. Canadian and US markets were different for availability too.

Because a 2002 V6 2WD s10 has total of maybe 6 inches of ground clearance with a 122.9 in wheel base. I've bottomed out in places my Impala didn't have a problem driving over, however I was going a lot faster in that car lol.
