If I'm a moderately experienced road rider that wants to learn dirt would it be worth while taking some kind of dirt/adventure riding course?

Are you able to go into more detail? I've been thinking of purchasing a 1290 GT so this is of interest to me.

Technically the 2017 is a revision of the 2016 (demo) version.
I was seriously considering one myself but decided against it and got and XR for a couple reasons
>Oil leaks are quite common
>high engine heat leading to side stand pegs breaking off
>luggage leaks
>2 year warranty as opposed to 3 with roadside
>seat not particularly comfortable
>windscreen not very effective
>no quick downshifter
>MTC failure on dealer demo test ride (red flag)

I really love how easy it is to ride at low speed and high, that big twin is fantastic and it's quite light. I personally mice the origami looks. Cornering lights seem useful too although I've read a few complaints about the delay.
I think right now the super adventure is more complete but the bigger front would put me off. A revision with the TFT dash should be around the corner though

I know a couple of guys that have taken enduro/adventure riding courses with Chris Birch and they both said it was some of the best money they've ever spent (a few hundred dollars I think), both for fun and skill building.

I started focusing on dirt riding back in May and have been very satisfied with my rate of skill building without taking courses, but I think this depends a lot on where you live and how much access you have to riding areas of varying difficulty. I'm within 30 minutes of several huge trail systems from beginner to black diamond so I've been able to put in an hour or two of trail riding after work every couple of days, gradually moving into more difficult riding areas as I learn.

I've found the best way to learn fast is to participate in local riding groups. Find your local dual sport club online, research your local trails, and start publicly inviting people out for beginner rides. Advanced riders often show up because they either like to show off or genuinely like to teach other riders.

Also, watch a lot of Cross Training:

A 1200 triple in a similar state of tune as the 675 would be absurd, like 220+ HP and power wheelies at 150. I'd fucking buy one.

There are a bunch of good cheap-ish bikes to start on, DRZ 400 is definitely one of them, depends on what you want out of a bike. If you want a lot of power and something that you'll grow into, the DRZ is it, if you want something that's more nimble, easier to pick up when dropped on trails, and is generally easier to ride and skill build on but is frustratingly slow on the highway, get a 250 dual sport like a CRF, KLX, or WR. There are no ideal dual sports, they're all fun and great at a lot of things, but they all suck at something.

Whats the dumbest thing y'all have heard about motorcycles?

I worked at a Harley dealer in the parts department for a while. One guy wanted to remove one of the brake rotors on his Road King so that he could better show off his $2500 wheel. I told him its probably not a good idea to compromise his brake system like that and he looked at me like i was the crazy one.

I never understood where Dynas fit in. The Sportster is the entry level Harley. Smaller size and engine. Not great for long distances. Softails are your poster child Harleys. The Fat Boy is probably one of the most iconic models. Super well balanced and comfy. Easily customizable. Not the most expensive model Harley has. Good for long distances. And of course your ridiculuosly expensive touring bikes too.

i think it's just the natural progression of things. Sport bikes not only attract douchebags and squids, but will also turn you into one over time. It's just so easy to do dumb stuff and be a dick on one. I think I ride relatively safely most of the time, especially compared to some of my friends
>>

>>
>>17788207
That's probably the better decision, but still. I don't think what I said applies to everyone but it just seems like a trend. I use my bike as my form of transportation 99% of the time and I started college classes so I keep getting stuck in traffic and the heat is just too much. I'm one of only a handful of people I've seen/know in Arizona who ever wears a jacket.

Once it starts to get chilly again I'll have to buy a leather jacket I guess

>>
>>17788223
Meh, I find my gear doesn't make me that much hotter, most of the heat comes from the engine and if anything it blocks some of it out. Perforated leather jacket and Kevlar jeans, as soon as i start moving I cool right down and I just lane split through any traffic.

Roll it up to top dead center and slide some feeler gauges in. If you have been keeping a well oiled and fitted CLEAN air filter they probably haven't moved. Put the valve cover and tank back on and get an 1/8th of blow and a mid grade hooker with your saved money.

Fun bike. I mostly ride street but explore any dirt I come across. It's a really great town bike and I do a lot of day rides at 55mph. It'll cruise 70 down the highway but you'll want proper gearing (which is really easy to do, you can swap front sprocket in 5 mins) to lower the rpm's. You can get the bike up to ~85 (according to speedo) but in short bursts. The SE is a ~300lb bike with no shielding so it's not the comfiest highway ride and the wind can knock you around but it's doable. If you do ride highway, you'll want to check your oil every fuel stop. That's good practice even if you don't ride highway. Only real cause of death for DR's is people not paying attention to oil. My MPG is right around 70 when commuting. 64 for spirited/highway riding.
It's a good bike for the money. I could go on but there's a text limit

Valve check interval is every 7500 miles with mine. They're constantly pushing out the interval with new bikes.

Maintenance isn't bad at all. I really dunno where people get that idea from when it comes to Ducatis, maybe because they're lazy as fuck. Oil changes, chain cleaning, filter swapping/cleaning, fluid replacing, all of the normal motorcycle maintenance is as easy to do yourself as any other bike.

Belts aren't too hard, you just need a tension tool and a guitar tuning app on your cell phone. It's tedious, but not difficult.

Haven't done valves yet. Can understand taking a Panigale in for checks since there's 8 of the fucks, but most (if not all) Monsters have the 2v engine, only 4 valves to check. Look up how to do it. It isn't hard to check them, a little bit tougher to shim then yourself. But that's a fuckton of maintenance costs saved when you can take it in and say, "I need the upper head's exhaust valve adjusted." Regardless, their shop rates are exactly the same as an other motorcycle or auto shop. OEM parts are cheap when you order directly from them.

Basically. The actual tool for measuring tension in the belts is crazy expensive so most people opt for the guitar tuner approach. You basically adjust tension in the belt and flick it until it resonates at 110hz (for OEM belts). They stretch though, so if you're checking them yourself trying to figure out if you're due for a replacement, they should be around 85hz.

You'll always find those 'perfect' bikes when you spend your time looking and don't have the cash. Take the time to actually set some money aside for a bike. Have a realistic budget, then find something perfect within that budget. Pay cash for your bike and own it outright.

Local credit union. They're usually chill as fuck about things. Hell, here in Iowa, mine gave me a friendly (seriously, this is the Midwest) call from the main-branch loan manager saying, "Good morning Mr. Anon! I noticed you missed your payment on Y day and that your payment history has been great until now. etc" She also gave me her office number and told me to call her that way there's no admin fee for running it by phone.

Any two stroke with more than 250cc is automatically man territory.

Then again, I'm American. Here, our kids dream of being sophisticated corner carvers and our men just go out and fucking race on a patch of dirt because pavement is an expensive waste of time.

This, since they keep closing tracks to put fucking malls and subdivisions on the land and do all sorts of trickfuckery and bullshit to run off track owners between "noise complaints" to the city when the track was there first literal generations before your fucking cookie cutter McMansion got built. Laguna Seca, of all fucking tracks in the world, is dealing with that bullshit as it stands.
>>
>>17789299
They give in because the sheer cost of maintaining a good track and updating it as safety standards evolve is too much, even with big name motorsport events and $300-a-guy track day fees.

Now, HORSE FAGGOTS closing down trails to motor vehicles because THEY SPOOK MUH HORSES is another matter.

Useless domesticated animal genocide BEST DAY OF MY LIFE. Horses are for burgers, not transport.

It's okay, I can barely put my foot on the ground when I'm sitting on it. And the previous owner was super tall so it has bar risers and lowered footpegs I need to figure out how to return to normal. The footpeg mounts have like nuts welded in the inside or something that the footpegs bolt onto and one of them has come un-attached and it's inside a little box of metal that is impossible to access so I'm not really sure how to go about fixing that.

I'm OK with horses. I'm not OK with trail closures (horses tear up trails worse than bikes anyhow) and people who don't train their horses to be chill around vehicles. Thicker or thinner liners can be bought for certain brands/helmets (I know I can buy it for my neotec) but definitely not all. It will pack in ever so slightly over the course of weeks/months depending on how much you ride but do not expect much. Is it uncomfortable now?
