>>
having a good physics model is the most vital part, making it satisfying to drive and preferably making it possible to tune suspension to get desired effects out of cars would be a great thing
on the less expected side of thing, i'd love to have a simcade game that actually does mechanical damage so that you can't win via gliding against guardrails and the like and avoiding contact with other cars actually becomes vaguely important

>>

possibility of racing random cars in freemode (forza horizon rip-off)
either a really big amount of cars or a great customization is a must (preferably both)
but dont just make the customization in a way that it can look either stock or riced as fuck
maybe its just a personal thing, but i really like when racing games have some cheaper cars as an option, not only supercars/icons

other ways of getting cars than buying them (winning it in a race/tourney)
and the two most important things (imo)
B A L A N C E
D I V E R S I T Y
theres no point in having 300 cars in the game, in a game where if you want to be succesful, you are forced to use top 3/5 cars
thats the hardest part, you could fight it with either crazy tuning options or a class system (i might be a forza fanboy)
same with car diversity, whats the point of including every single generation and version of impreza, if you arent even going to include a single BMW?
the second one will really have some impact on marketing, having wagons, hatchbacks, sedans, convertibles etc. will let everyone pick a car they really like, but dont overdo it, if its going to be based on japan, but even then, having some volvos and bmws wouldnt be that irrational and would really please a lot of people

variety in gameplay and scenery is vital for a game like this to become popular, since you're already limiting yourself pretty hard via the japanese street racing scene
have super tight backroads that can only have cat-and-mouse-style chases, have tokyo loop-style highways that allow for 4+ racers to blast around at ridiculously high speeds, have all sorts of roads to allow for all sorts of different, engaging gameplay and preferably create ai that can support these different forms of play rather than having to find friends or random online play for it

A proper story. Doesnt have to be a NYBS novel, but just a reason to do what I'm doing in the game.

Forcing users to use lower end cars for a while, slowly upgrading until the car or engine has hit its limits and it needs to be replaced aswell.

Forget about music in game, just have a way to integrate other media into the game flawlessly.

I wanna see old Corollas, Skylines, Imprezas, Lancers, Bimmers, Mazdas, Fords, etc.

Specifically I'd like to see lower level Skylines myself. the GTS and GTST models from the R32/R33 are great drift cars since they have a lot of the advantages of GTRs, but are RWD. They also generally look a bit more dumpy, which makes them great for converting into drifters.

Oh, also this. Like, don't exaggerate it or anything, but drift should be applicable in the same way it is in real life. Only used in really tight hairpins where it's simply quicker to do it that way than to slow down and grip your way through, rally-like conditions

A modular exhaust tuning system where you can build crazy zokusha shit or simple straight pipes.

A wheel generator (specify # of spokes, spoke shape, wheel diameter and width)

Real-life touge from all over the world, would like to see Haruna, Stelvio and Calderwood Mountain all in the same game.

Wheel support and top-tier force feedback

No shitty penalties for using driver aids (like how Forza forces your shifts to be slower if you are using auto clutch thereby making you slower overall)

Area-based freeroam with multiple environments (like Midtown Madness 2, Test Drive Unlimited 2, etc)

Simulator-grade physics engine with modifications made for entertainment value rather than an arcade racer that presents itself as realistic. Look into using isiMotor 2.5 or do what Simbin is doing and use a combination of UE4 and simulator-grade vehicle physics. Prototype your game with rFactor 2.

Include silly secret vehicles. TXR Drift 2 had a Suzuki Carry and Nissan Sunny pick-up, the Carry was pretty slow but the Sunny could absolutely tear up corners, it was awesome overtaking GT-Rs on the outside at Usui and then blocking them in the straights.

People overestimate how many polys you need for a fun to play game that looks decent. Unreal Tournament 99 quality (1k-2k tris) is perfectly workable, especially since we don't need low-size compressed textures anymore. Be like mobile devs, put the extra work into a solid texture and you don't need a high-poly model.

>>
>>17770005
The biggest single thing I would change about pretty much all simcade games is to make the vehicle tuning something you can do in real time while driving. I want to be able to *feel* what changes about the vehicle's handling when I change tire pressure and wheel camber.

Additionally;
Include non-fast vehicles like buses, commercial trucks and minivans that you can try and fail to hoon

Let the player remove trim pieces and interior bits individually to reduce weight

and most importantly, more of the common cheap cars and less of the ultra-exotics. Where's the fun in fucking with a vehicle that's already been modded and tuned to perfection by real engineers? I want to take a cheap common car that I could afford IRL and beat it half to death in a consequence-free virtual environment.

I would really like to see not just japanese cars. everything that has to do with "touge" is already doing that. Just adding in something like a foxbody or an e30 is going to be ahead of the pack in that regard and I think you should do more. fuck the "muh pure jdm" crowd. they can just not drive those cars.

Sound is really important. Assetto Corsa sounds like shit and is the #1 immersion breaking thing in that game.

good physics, with a tutorial/story which actually walks you through the basics of driving/drifting. I see a lot of games skipping on that which makes a huge barrier to entry in racing games imo. Assetto corsa has this issue bad. I feel like there's no incentive to learn much because the AI is either pants on head stupid or ridiculously hard killing whatever "career" mode was there (though it was incredibly boring, any amount of story would have made it 10x interesting). In Dirt Rally they started them hard but beatable and made your progress natural as you got better in tiers.

I don't mean you should have any story, Grid 2's story mode is incredibly obnoxious and ham fisted with "likes and shares on youtube" but you could do something like bunta training takumi before Initial D happened as the tutorials.

If you wanted to attract multiple audiences you can have a sliding scale of physics realism like with forza. You could go from Initial D Arcade to Assetto corsa level, with difficulties in the tutorial/story mode gradually getting harder with more realistic physics and new driving techniques.

If you can manage around dirt rally level of graphic fidelity that's fine. Assetto Corsa is fine in a lot of cases but there are plenty of times where your immersion can be broken because of the poor quality. If you're going for stylized graphics then this can be pretty much ignored.
>>
Give it some sort of a progression or career system to keep people playing. So it's not just pick your favourite car and have a map to drive on, that will get boring fast. Include unlockable cars, parts, tracks, areas, that kind of shit. If you want to make it open world, maybe even include ''risk'' elements like having to refuel your car, do maintenance and repair if you crash. Basically don't make another instant gratification shitfest.

Will it have cockpit view/good interior/interior customization? Also if its open world what will the setting be? I'd personally like to see a large tokyo like metropolitan area that slowly blends into hills and them the mountain passes on the outskirts. So you have a large open world where if you're in the city you have that cool street racing feeling and then you can head to the togues and drift down with an awesome view of the city from the mountains. Also since you're adding radio station's and a euro beat one I'd recommend a radio station adding some fast paced pop punk kind of like how burnout 3 had that gave you a sense of speed and excitement. It would also be cool if there was a feature, that you could turn on or off that would make the music react to how fast your going or if you crash it fades out. So the faster you go the louder it gets or something that complements the feeling of going fast.

The Twingo weighs roughly the same as the Suzuki Cappuccino, a tiny ass, lightweight version of the Miata. Add police to the game so that if you try to race during the day or in the middle of the city they will crush your car and give you a huge fine. Also the same if you crash into an innocents car (obviously make sure no normal cars are on the touge once the sun goes down). Japanese street racers were honorable and so players should be punished if they try to act like need for speed tier mexican racers.

Try driving with a keyboard IRL and see how "realistic" your car's behavior is.
BeamNG.drive is designed to be played with a wheel, and unless you have superhuman keyboard speed to the point that you can PWM the keys fast enough to precisely control steering position, you won't be doing any driving with grip.
If you're looking for a realistic driving sim, this is it. Full suspension tuning, realistic drivetrain modeling, the bitch even models tire and brake heat. I just hope you don't plan on spending all that money on the most realistic driving game available and then try to control it with a gamepad.

Actually this is kind of a neat idea. Remember how outrun 2006 had you with a girl at your side? This could be a feature in the game. Models or model mode. Where you have a customizable girl that can ride with you. You'd be able to pose her on your care if you want to as well. As for the racing aspect you could add a certain type of model event where you can have "impress the model" drifting events. Would be cool if you could have your model with you online as well so you could have other /o/tists bring their cars and their models to races. It would also be funny if they had certain reactions to you winning or losing. Like everyone else's models laughing at you if you lose the race or all the models applauding you for being 1st.
>>
OP here, thanks for all the contributions and wishes of good luck. Development is well underway, I will be tomorrow's determining the exact contents of the upcoming demo, with 1-2 vars from each category likely to feature. Our priority is gameplay over story, the story should slowly allow you to use new cars and advance rather than just getting an NSX, GT-R etc. first.
I'm still noting ideas, I will be adding a few, but not many EU cars (Delta, E30 etc.) Unless it's an extremely abstract suggestion, Japanese cars are not worth suggesting as the roster will include the majority of Japanese market cars. To the guy that mentioned the MR2 222, I assurr you that will be included. I am open to introducing a rally class, with Jap cars only.
At the request of many I will be making a development blog which will be announced in a post soon which will also include the feature list of the upcoming demo and more info on the demo.

Brake fade is the term you're looking for.

Anyway, what I want in a car game is for it to be community server based, so you have your server you always go to with the people you know, and there needs to be a used car market, and there needs to be a limit on certain cars in the game. So there should only be say 3 enzos per server, so if you want an enzo you need to buy it from someone on the server.
You need to repair your vehicles, and modding is a must.
It would be cool to have club houses, where you and your friends could buy a garage property in the serve's city and work out of it.
You should need to make money, but it shouldn't be grindy.

If you have a working demo, a realistic plan for production and a long caarer in game development. Then i think it would be a succesful kickstarter.
Through if you just make a kickstarter filled with promises and little to no work to show, you could probaly still get a good amount of money.
What about trying to get a publisher?

Please make it car simulation first not racing simulation. I don't give a fuck about online and racing with noobs who crashed in 1st lap is annoying. Give it proper physic and tire simulation. Even if you can only license like 10 cars I would be okay with that as long it's marketed as car simulation game (must be licensed cars tho else it's not a carsim). The touge parts and racing events are easy to implement once you got the foundation right. It doesn't have to be laser scanned stuff.
>>
The most important thing to focus on is actually making the game feel good to play, this is what turns me off with a lot of the PS2 racing games; they just don't feel good to play. Making sure the game feels good to play and controls well should be the absolute first thing you do. As has been said, using visual and audio effects to give a sense of speed would be a VERY good idea, this is one of the things I liked about NFS Shift. Making the game a simcade seems like the a good choice as it will make the game more accessible (I know this is a bit of a dirty word when it comes to games) and personally I feel simcades can be fun for the same reasons driving a slow car can be fun; you can drive at the limit constantly. Still just because the game is a simcade it doesn't mean you can't have in-depth physics. Mechanics such as tire wear and brake fade are interesting but I think they might be too much for a game like this.

I would definitely like to see the game have a good amount of adjustability with things like ride height, spring rate, toe and camber, gearing, downforce(if car has adjustable wing), etc. It's up to you how crazy you go with customization but the ability to change parts and have them actually effect aerodynamics and weight would be neat. The game should definitely allow you to change wheels and wheel color. If you want shitboxes to be able to compete with not-shitboxes(which is up to how you want the progression to work) then the ability to do engine swaps would be a good idea and of course they would affect the car's weight balance, again it's up to how you want progression to work but these could be locked away by either high price or level/progress requirement. I agree with other anons that while the focus of this game is JDM cars there should be European and maybe even American cars, this could potentially widen the game's audience depending on how many you have in the game. These cars could be treated as exotic cars.
>>
>>17794064
(Continued)
If you are going to make the game open world (which would require a LOT more work!) Then you could do all sorts of cool stuff you don't see often in car games. You could have different car dealerships that carry different brands or different tiers of cars (possibly with an inventory that changes daily like in Gran Turismo). Modifications would obviously be done at a mechanic's shop. You could have gas stations for players to fill up at (but don't make the cars guzzle gas at ridiculous rates, just make it a neat little feature that you have to fill up every once and a while). I'm not completely sure if I think this kind of game should have it, but there could be a water and/or oil temperature gameplay mechanic, again just like the gasoline don't exaggerate it but just make it something the player has to deal with every once and a while (drive their car gentler, pull over for a bit, or call it a night.

Now I know it's supposed to be a touge racing game, but I just felt I should say it would be cool if you could also race on the highway, adding diversity to the gameplay and giving players reasons to use and build different types of cars.

Oh and I have no idea if you intend to make this multiplayer, because some(most?) of the things I suggested probably wouldn't be doable in a multiplayer game but you know what now that I think about it we need more multiplayer touge games.
>>
detailed engine tuning, not just "hurr stage three tune bro"
the ability to upgrade individual suspension components with the money you win from races
also in the campaign mode you should be heavily encouraged to pick a car you like and stick with it throughout the whole campaign
e.g. you start off with a fat stack of cash and before you can do anything you have to pick a car, but all the cars in the game are available from the get-go (and you can test drive them and stuff)
but once you buy one you're sort of soft-locked into the car because you only just make enough money to start upgrading it
obviously that means that any car would stay competitive throughout the whole game as long as it's properly upgraded
>>
i'd recommend only having one difficulty level, and instead of making the ai weaker or more bullshit just change the starting parameters for the game so plebs can start off with a pristine r32 gtr with extra money to spare and patricians can start off with a kei car that they have to not wreck or else it's all over
>>
Have the transmission type (manuel, automatic) be based off what car you buy, rather then on a setting in an options menu. It's the little stuff like this that always tickles my fancy in games.
>>
I would want it to be full-on sim and not simcade, for one.

Decent selection of courses, basically all the ones from every season of Initial D plus some other famous spots that never got mentions.

Fuckloads of customization of aerodynamic parts, with ability to alter performance/suspension parts and so on within reasonable limits (not Forza levels, just the ability to crank a shitbox to around 350-400hp or so)
Maybe the ability to "free roam" into towns and shit on either side of the hills to sightsee and turn around to run the other direction?

"gamey" options like offering a few starter cars or a prescribed amount of starter money in order to begin your career with would be neat but isn't necessary, would definitely help to build some immersion and make people think about what they want to drive/do to their cars instead of just trying everything and sucking at driving everything like I commonly see in AC.

t. 300 hours of touge in assetto corsa
>>
>>17794489
>I would want it to be full-on sim and not simcade, for one.
it could not be a full on sim and also have high levels of customization simply because you cannot accurately represent what bodykits and engine swaps and etc would actually do to a car without actually testing it using proper engineering equipment that an indie team is not going to have or seeing a real example
there's a reason why sims to this day still only introduce cars they can fuck around with in person
>>
>>17794498
Yeah, I kind of wrote the entire rest of the post under the assumption there was no way to get OP to change the whole premise of his game.

Convincing enough physics are all I ask for really. As panned as it got, hitting the same level as DiRT Rally or even DiRT 4's "sim" mode is more than enough.
>>
Make drifting feel a bit more real and less slidey... I'm not sure what I mean by that.

In Forza, when you drift the car is basically just floating across the map like it's on ice but the difference between drift and grip in that game is that when you drift you have smoke coming out the rear tires... that's it.

I also want body roll and weight transfer to actually be noticeable

I don't know how much you've set in stone already, but I would love to play something like a mix between Initial D and My Summer Car.

Basically, you have a comfy town/city where you fuck around during the day doing whatever you like (working, messing with your car, etc.) and every weekend you can go up to your local touge at night to race cocky assholes. As you win races you build up notoriety which will cause other assholes who are more skilled to start challenging you to races. Once you're well known you can also go to other mountain passes and challenge the locals there. You can practice on weekdays, but races only happen on weekend nights.

Also gas station bants with Iketani/Kenji/Itsuki knockoffs.

My idea for this story would be that your mom died when giving birth to you, you're the only son, dad and uncle used to race and dad died when the character was three or something. Main character grown by uncle who stopped racing then, but because your dad wanted you to be a good driver lets you have your dad's training car/second car/touge car instead of a highway cruiser or something (this could be how you choose your starting car, 1984 or older, 1999, character would be 18 and dad died when he was 3) and teaches you to drive when you're still underaged.

Hell, you could even have a whole rival team consisting of rich dudes that pride themselves on driving exclusive non-JDM imports.

samefag here;
TrackIR/other headtracking and VR support would be preferred as well, you really need to be able to look toward the corner's exit when drifting. It's possible with a fixed-forward view, but really damn hard to do and requires an autismal amount of course memorization.
