First for it's okay to start on a 600 if you are an adult

>Brake with two fingers
>Respect the throttle. You don't need WOT for traction around a corner.
>Know there's a time and a place for everything
>Work your way up to higher speeds. Most people who start on big bikes get hurt because they let the racer pretentions get to them.
>Do track days

You don't need to start out as a clueless nitwit on a 250 to git gud.

What are the best cheap bike security options for when you cant keep an eye on it?

>wanted to get a street legal xr650r (dirt bike)
>find out they dont even use keys
>someone that knows how to kick start properly can just walk up to it and ride off like they own it

Looks like ill need a heavy fucking chain, u lock, and some booby traps (ala seat explodes if you dont kick it in a certain pattern)
>>
>>17709663
WTF wrong with you faggot

>stay behind her ALL FUCKING DAY
>>
>>17709691
take the MSF course. it's $200, cheaper than gear and a bike you may not even like. if you're not sure take another course.

then buy a midsized sport-tourer owned by an older gentleman who's getting out of riding or just making room for a new busa.

ask about

>oil changes
>fork seals and oil
>valve adjustments (look up bike X valve adjustment intervals so you know if one is coming up/due/overdue)
>steering head bearings
>wheel bearings
>throttle and clutch cables
>brake pads, fluid
>look for shiny brake lines. that's a white flag for gud bike.

Do not buy anything with evident crash damaged. If they cared, they would have fixed all of it.

What do you guys think of Enfields? I haven't been on a bike in a few years and want to get back into it. Only bikes I've ever been on were cheap Hondas to learn on, then my father's old Vulcan so I don't have diverse experience.

>>17709691
take a course after taking the written permit test. They give you practical stuff to stuff plus about 12-18 hours of direct, supervised, on-bike training. In my state, you even get a waiver for the driver's test at the end if you meet all the requirements so it was a no brainer for me when I started out.

I prefer cruisers, and I just think this thing looks fucking sexy, but know nothing about the brand, cost of parts for those in America, etc. I'm already a little on the fence because it's only 500cc and I'd prefer something higher, 750cc minimum. But I guess I can compromise if there are no other issues.

>>17709773
I just like that sort of older aesthetic, and they no good?

alternatively I was looking at a yamaha bolt since I know a place that never sold a slightly older model and is letting it go for cheaper. Less than 6k for 950cc cruiser sounds like a deal

i wish i started on a 250 so i could have kept my worthless beater beginner bike as a cheap track toy

bigger bikes cost too much to run at the track and make really shitty starter bikes for track riding

I just looked deeper into it

>company now exists in India and manufactures the bikes there

>>
>>17709850
You could have just as easy got a beater 600/650. Sv650 is extremely popular at track
Most people aren't going to be taking their bikes to the yeah either due to lack of availability and other reasons

None time rider here, really got the bug to buy a bike. Turned off by sportbikes though since it's simply a road rocket and I feel like I would get bored of just riding through traffic. I came to the conclusion that a dual sport is my best option, and possibly THE best option for a beginner rider.

This just popped up on craigslist for $2200 and I REALLY want to buy it. It hurts my soul to be so broke when looking at these bikes on craigslist, I would buy this bike in a heartbeat

Try to change my mind and tell me why buying a used ninja 250 for $1600 would be the better choice, please
>>
>>17709879

I think if you have friends to hoon around with a dual sport would be a great bike. If it's just you and the road in your visions of riding, you're gonna want something else.
>>
>>17709869
A 650 or old ass CBR600F1 still takes bigger rubber and more and more expensive brake parts. There's also less shit to upgrade and safety wire on a 250, and more spare parts because of their popularity.

Even the (single) front rotor for the early 250s is dirt cheap, and you can get fairings with all the tabs on them for around $50.

Money saved on your track buy is money towards your gear and the track entry fees.

They're god tier track toys and I regret not starting with one because of the opportunities they open up as opposed to just sitting in your garage until the next idiot buys it.

Am I a retard for considering buying a bike as a first vehicle? I have pretty minimal road experience in cars, but I would much rather drive a bike vs. a car at this point. Am I just asking to be killed in an accident or will I be okay learning as I go?
>>
>>17710000
At actual serious offroading? They're compete dogshit like all bikes that size.

For just riding around town and logging roads they're fine

>>
>>17710162
My bike is my first vehicle, but I drove my parents car for years so I knew the roads before I got on my bike. Just follow the rules of the road and pay attention to other drivers/pedestrians/animals. Stick around familiar areas until you are confident
>>
>>17710174

It rains and snows here nigga, but I work from home so it's not like I have to go out in it. What I'm more concerned of is not being used to driving in traffic and getting on a bike
>>
why do people raise the price on their craigslist ads lmao
>>
>>17710187
I mean It's your life, but it's not the best option you have, you'll get your bike soon enough.
>>
>>17710166

what's so bad about them in serious offroading? It's a true dirt bike in every sense of the word as far as I can tell. It's still sub 300lbs dry, really not any taller than a normal dirt bike, it has the power to keep up with them. I don't see where the discrepancy is
>>
>>17710198
Its fat, has awful gearing, and really unresponsive. I rode one for a couple of days back in the early 90s when I was looking for a new bike and couldn't get it to do anything I wanted.

Rode an XR350 right after that and it was like night and day so I instantly bought one of those instead.
>>
>>17710198
Not him but they have terrible suspension, terrible gearing, terrible throttle response, terrible handling, terrible power delivery and they are just plain heavy which means you use more energy to ride them while going slower because of all the other listed problems.
>>
>>17710219
>>17710242

Basically they are about 2 generations behind modern bikes.

For the time they were pretty good bikes.

For about the same money you could get a XL650 and it's better

At minimum use the bike to commute. Get your first crash in while you've got an excuse, and walk into summer better prepared than most seasonal riders.

In my USA state it's illegal to park on the sidewalk but everyone does it, especially outside bars. You can pack as many bikes as you can fit into a space though, and technically you can put a bike into the same space that a car is already in. If I'm downtown, I'll find a compact car that already paid for parking and just slide into the edge of their space.

just focus on getting your upper body off the bike before moving your ass.

you can get a lot more lean angle just by stretching your arms a little.

If you still wanna go faster THEN its time to start getting your knee out.

What kind of terrain can cruiser tires handle? I've been going granny slow and not attempting anything real, but that's lack of experience. When I upgrade my daily, think it would be nice to try real trails.

you need a standard rear paddock stand first and foremost to do chain maintenance and get the bike stood up properly.

after that a front head-lift stand is pretty useful if you need to do any work on the forks or front tire.
>>
>>17711664
Yes. I'm a cruiserfag but standard motorcycles are aesthetic as fuck. I'm glad hipsters are making cafe racer and retro style bikes popular again. I hope to get a T120 or some modern Triumph in a few years when they're cheaper. Yamaha Bolt looks pretty as hell too.

>>17711653
I've been doing more gravel roads lately going out to the countrylands, it gets kinda sketchy but I just maintain constant pace. I hear you should just not worry too much if your back tire breaks away a little, as long as you keep the front pointed where you need to go and don't go super fast or change speed rapidly. Smooth shifts when you gotta move gears. Honda VLX handling it fine.

Cheapest would probably be by land so you could ride there yourself or hitch a ride in some sort of van or box truck arrangement. Shipping instantly adds costs just for being shipping and having to be crated and having to clear ports and customs and so on.

Caucasus Mountains and Turkey might be a neat ride and there's not that far away, maybe get some Iran under your belt while you're there.

I've heard that Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are absolutely beautiful to ride in, but the route there through Russia and Kazakhstan is just absolutely endless, 6000 km one way.

China apparently isn't that good of an option, not lastly due to insane traffic but also I've heard that you can only do motorcycle trips there in groups with a guide.

All east and southeast Asian destinations will basically require shipping.

hows the reliability? how is it to ride? what about power, does it feel adequate in traffic? never had anything but inline4 myself so i cant tell him anything about it really

>>
>>17711774
I've ridden one on numerous occasions. I cant remember what year, but I know its the early model (distinguished by the swing arm, amongst others).

Its a nice bike, you sit up right and the ergonomics fit me fairly well, being 185cm tall.
The engine is throaty and torquey, but I had vibrations in the handlebars at a certain rev range - supposedly quite a common occurrence, I dont know if the later model fixed it.
I would just ride motorway speeds at a gear lower to keep the revs up and the vibrations down.

Overall a good bike, cheap and plentiful. My impression is that its fairly reliable...

postan a gentleman's motorcycle

pretty much any bike can be totalled out because mounting tabs for accessories broke off the engine/frame, despite everything measuring straight, because insurance companies have a "good as new" policy where parts have to replaced instead of welded back together

more expensive bikes that need imported parts and "specialist" labor according to your company's approved shops are even more likely to be totalled.

>oh you bent the forks and scratched the plastics on your ten year old panigale that will be 80% of the bike's fair market value
>>
>>17712095
Skinny tyres allow you to dig in better
Wide tyres let you float over
For flat mud and sand you want wide paddles in the rear and a large, thin front to use as a rudder
>>
>>17712096
>tfw your quote disappears

>>17712090

Also there's no way a bike is getting cat A'd unless it gets dunked into the ocean, and cat B for a bike is meaningless because of how simple it is to destroy the frame from an insurance company's perspective - and how feasible it is to replace it, as, unlike a car, most of the bike is non-structural and replacing the frame is simpler than fixing a transmission problem on most motorcycles.

Pray tell, why can't you do this shit on any other bike? Does having a lot of power like on a real motorcycle make it too easy to break traction off pavement? Do the rounded tires for easy leanings just sink into the ground like a wedge?

Ive ridden an 883 sportster and my scout sixty.

I dont have alot to compare them to other than my gfs 250r, theyve got lots of torque, they both handle well, even with the scouts fat front tire, the scout leans pretty well the sportster not so much.
both bikes I feel like im sitting in it instead of on it.

So far I prefer "small" cruisers to the big ones Ive sat on, 800 pound bikes are crazy.

The hurleys transmission was pretty clunky, scout tranny is really nice by comparison.

I disagree. If you consider the forst and the second gen as the same bike (aesthetically there are little differences after all) the F4 design is still the best on the market, even after 20 years. Compare the RSV4 and the F4. The F4 is hands down the best looking bike ever. The problem with last years models are the colors/livery. A lot of them are Suzuki-tier ugly
