I am big on the idea of adding a cowl seat to a ujm because the standard seats are ugly and I don't really want to carry people anyway.

>>
>>17599823
I really want to customise a bike and have it not ride like a bobber or cruiser.

DESU, I like old customised UJM's but I am not even sure they should be called cafe racers.

If you look at old cafe racers photos from the 60's the guys had a poor fag, hooligan, failure at life vibe about them. They treated their bikes like shit and didn't seem to care much about how they look. Some of them had fuel tanks that look like they were just smashed with a mallet for a better place to put your legs without even caring how it looks.

These modern cafe racers are kind of the opposite.. People are spending lots of money to make sure to make sure everything fits perfectly and looks neat and spending lots of money.

I don't get how and why they are considered the same thing...

I just know I like Ujms with cowel seats.

take a ujm and destroy it
the few that go beyond the "take everything off without a clue" phase wind up unridable for more than photoshoots. it's the absolute most hipster thing you can do to a motorcycle and like all things hipster it has to be as painful and uncomfortable as possible, thus ruining an otherwise affordable ujm.

now google ujm and search "cafe project" on your local craigslist for more clues to what I'm saying

If you do that, the finest details resolvable are the diameter of the nozzle so the text would be illegible. Printed vertically, it's the layer height (20% of the nozzle diameter) multiplied by the movement accuracy.

Just purchased a 1995 Honda Magna 750, and it came with aftermarket saddle bags. I'm not personally a fan of them, so I removed them. After removing them, I looked at the bottom of the bags, and noticed they were melted. Looked at the exhaust, and it's a mess from the melted material on the bottom of the bags. Any tips on how to clean the stuff off without destroying the exhaust?

>Any tips on how to clean the stuff off without destroying the exhaust?

Depends on the material. If it's nylon, you're shit out of luck and will just need to heat and scrape. Other polymers may have solvents that will let you soften them chemically but the sort of solvent that will soften nylon will tear its way through just about any other plastic on the bike like a fatty at a buffet.

>>17600909
It's really fine if you get one with traction control and rider modes for low traction conditions and being a pussy, but

they're fucking expensive. tires and chains cost more and wear out faster. they use more gas. insurance premiums are higher.
some new riders are absolutely shit and will whisky throttle for no damn good reason.
all new riders are afraid of literally any and all power because applying it straightens the bike out so you need to lean more to make a turn. an easy way to lowside as a new rider is to run in high gear all the time and enter a moderately fast turn with zero throttle or decreasing throttle.
not all liters have rider aids. have fun on rainy days. is your built in traction control marquez tier or yammienoob tier?
>>
>>17600904
Demographic size. There's a myriad of choices for the 20-40 market but, beyond that, comfort is the biggest deciding factor when the average 40+ biker is selecting a bike. Since Britain has whole motorways shorter than some of the gaps between ramps in American highways a cruiser only makes sense if you are after the look so they inevitably gravitate towards an upright bike with a soft saddle and super comfy suspension (it weirds me out because it removes all road feedback but, if I had a spinal problem I could see the appeal).
>>
>>17600925

Combined ABS more or less requires a dealer to bleed or you're in for a bad time and more money in bottles of DOT4 than you would have spent at the shop.

Regular brakes can be bled from dry at home for twenty bucks and a fifty cent piece of rubber tube.

look at this people. this is a cafe racer. this is a real cafe racer.

it is a machine built by a man from the UK. it is made from a base production bike and outfitted with aftermarket and components from other bikes. it is stripped down to the bare minimum. its sole purpose is to go really bloody fast. it is not meant to look nice. it is not supposed to have character. every modification has a purpose related to going fast. a cafe racer is a home-built race bike.
>>
>>17601144
Yup, more or less embodies the spirit of cafe racers. Although I'm not sure if he spent a lot of money trying to make it go fast, since cafe racers were about budget too.

nu-cafe racers are literally for squids, hipsters/numales, and posers
>>
>>17601154
The real cafe racers were always the best their riders could afford. They would go as far as buying two bikes to make into one because they wanted a specific chassis and engine.

It just so happened that most cafe racer riders were poor fucks who already spent half their money on leather coats

A lot of times when people switch to lithium batteries, they get one of the really small ones with low capacity just because it has the same CCA (amperage) rating. If you get a battery with the same capacity (usually given in watt hours or amp hours) then it shouldn't be an issue.

They don't. If your design needs cluttered graphics to break it up, design is fail. If design is good, cluttered faggotry is fail. Pedo cartoons are extra industrial fail.
>>
>>17601213
It depends is your idle air/fuel screw on the intake side or airbox side? If I take then in will decrease the amount of gas going in for your idle mixture. Out will allow more gas to flow into the mixture thus becoming a richer mixture.
The hunting/up and down idle is caused by too much air and causes your idle to go up with the extra air in the mix, then it goes down when there is no gas. The cycle repeats.
TL:DR try backing out the screw the same you went in. It should go back to how it was before.

Fucking Google that shit. You must not have looked and if you are too dumb to use a search engine I'd hate to see what you do to a motorcycle. Image search first, collect images, then find out what parts were used on bikes you like. Same principle as building a chopper.

>>17599745
You could fit clip-ons but they are the same thing, though much more adjustable.

Step one, find a motorcycle you actually like riding as-is which is proven to make a proper cafe machine.

Step two, thoughtfully modify that motorcycle to suit.

Ergonomics are a combination of seat, bars and peg placement, hence rearsets on most cafe conversions.

How much money do you have? That's relevant. Are you a mechanic? That's relevant.

There are no rules. "BMW" bars or "Harley XLX" bend bars are available in 7/8", 1" etc so you can install them on anything with a suitable top triple clamp. They are comfortable but don't put you in a racing crouch. They are inexpensive and short enough to work with most stock lines and cables. Avoid "drag bars" which are not comfortable for most people.

>>17599774
Just bag a used Hinckley Triumph and cafe that. The other posters remark on the suspension was directed towards stock geometries of the time.

Remember you won't be looking at yourself while riding so bar choice means fuck all.

Also remember that removable cowls exist.

>They treated their bikes like shit and didn't seem to care much about how they look.

They usually raced them, they weren't show bikes. England wasn't rich and it was common to ride your bike to a meet, change spark plugs and jetting, remove silencers if fitted, and go race. Even spark plugs were rebuildable like the famous KLG racing plugs. Vertically split crankcases were easy to produce on the primitive machine tools of the time, but they leak by nature. Engines and transmissions were separate on many machines and joined by a primary case. More places to leak...Therefore bikes didn't stay pretty for long. Lacquer paint gets fucked up almost instantly on a bike that's actually ridden.

Now cafe bikes and choppers and hot rods are folk art, so go do whatever.

There are properly done cafe conversions but most are total nigger abortions just like most choppers are total nigger abortions which end up as basket cases instead of complete motorcycles.

The cafe conversions done right are NOT done to some stupid little piece of shit 250 commuterneuterscooter no one loved when they came out because they were ill handling slugs. Start with a machine which performed well in its era, apply classic (not nigger) memes and the result can be quite graceful.

>>17600150
knows the score.

Common to both cafe and chopper conversions of utter shitbikes (not the good kind of shitbike) is people cashing in on the meme but doing crappy work.

If you want a good outcome, start with a good donor and do "no cut" cosmetic mods only. Save what you take off. There is nothing new to invent so don't.

Old UJMs don't steer or brake all that well. Just so ya know...

I traveled into the midwest US with friends this past weekend and as an east coaster I saw how fucking rural and depressing it is out there. Now I know why Harley's are so popular in America, because there's nothing but miles and miles of straight roads next Cletus' farm until you reach a "city" which is really just an average commercialized town.
I've never been more grateful about where I live, with actual cities and actual people within short distances, not to mention roads that have curves.

Afros are cool too...right?.....

I don't really want to pour money into a bike that's too cheap to insure, but depending on how the year goes, who knows.
I ordered a second tank-pad, so paint would just be a pain in the ass more than anything (apartment parking lot or my father's garage...50 miles away). And they don't sell pannier racks for it anymore. (Anybody overseas can correct me, please do so.)
Upgrading isn't even an "I got bored" matter. I came off a scooter before this, so 250 is literally enough. I just had my heart set on some locking bags for cross-country trips.
