Because I was going to change the front, put my own fairing on. Insurance doesn't give a shit, as long as the vin says cb, not cbr.
And it's cheaper to just buy a new headlight/cluster from a boneyard. I don't know what all's in a modern one, but it can't be that complicated.
Also, do some headstands, pussy.

Is that a 929? I had a 929 once, rode on the freeway in top gear going 80mph for about 40min. When I parked it, it vomited oil out of the drain plug. Freaked me the fuck out but it still had oil in it and it was at the operational marker. Guess the previous owner overfilled it or something.

Bike fuckin left me stranded a week later tho after the stator died

Battery gave up the ghost again. This keeps happening way too often. Two weeks ago it stalled after 20km of highway riding, then wouldn't start on its own but I managed to push-start it. This time I got two streets worth of pushing workout before giving up and uninstalling the battery to charge it at home (11.4V btw). I'd been doing some city riding yesterday but I tried not to go down to 1st gear.

It's a 2001 model, sure, but this seems excessive.

Action plan:
-buying a battery gauge so I can watch what's happening as I ride
-as soon as possible get a few days off and just disassemble the whole god damn thing, check for parasitic loads and see if the nonfunctional horn is the issue.

I have a multimeter, tell me what to do. Bike is in the city, where I left it.

There's a stator coil continuity test described in the clymer manual, I'll do that as part of the whole electrical system troubleshooting process.

>>
>>17526690
You basically just start by measuring the voltage across the battery, and then across all the wires. It depends on the bike what you should be revving at (it's 4k for mine), and how much your battery should be reading. For me it's 14v across the battery and then 60 across all the legs which you just measure from the pins (1-2,1-3 and 2-3) where it plugs into your R/R.

Then you can measure ground continuity and resistance but if it's not working it should show up on these tests.

Look up what it is for your specific bike though, mine are just for examples.

Why, the GS 500 of course.
It is THE BEST beginner bike.
>>

Clymer says things similar to what you described, here it's 5k revs, 15 on battery, 70 on legs. I'll do it ASAP, I assume the battery will be charged before sunset.
>>
>>17526757
Stators are fairly cheap if you do need a new one. Little bit more than a battery but they last a long time.
>>
>>17526615
Shim the ear pieces close to your ears, otherwise the sound quality will seem like it's shit. Sound is good, connectivity is good, it's a real pain in the taint to connect more than two units. Don't lose the charging cable, you can't get new ones. Otherwise the bt-s2 is really good for the money.

Cheap, reliable, ubiquitous parts, fuel efficient, smooth power delivery.
It's perfect for beginners and commuters, and prices for leftovers just dropped below 5k.

5k is way too much for a beginner rider.
All those advantages, plus others, apply to the GS 500.

You're looking at maybe a dent in the tank, some rash on the engine casing, broken controls/pegs, and fuckered tail panels. All of those things are very easy to fix and they won't all happen at once.

Older nakeds like the FZ6, CB600/CB919, and ZR7 are getting very cheap, are very easy to fix, very reliable, and despite being budget blasters, were always better built than slow suzuki garbage.

Don't buy slow suzuki garbage.

America uses motorcycles as a vessel for natural selection

Europoor laws are specifically crafted to reduce death rates, mostly by reducing the number of motorcyclists in the first place by being expensive and prohibitive, so you can't have a real bike until you're well into adulthood and probably past the "bikes are cool" phase that would have gotten you into them for life.

Saw this dude on some massively loud harley thing. Rode way too quick through some parking lots, revved his engine to the moon every time he was next to a car.
Tried leaning as he went past me, so many sparks.
Just general asshole on a bike. Hope he died later that day.

My dad got my a dirt bike out of the fucking blue when I was 16. Rode that little YZ85 till I destroyed the engine.

Now I just recently started riding sport bikes in my late 20's. I think waiting until your about 25 or so is a good idea before getting into street simply because you can die at a moments notice if you don't use good judgement riding.

Also started on dirtbike when I was a kid, like 8.
Never crashed on street til now, at 25. Twice in the same week for the same thing.

Started on sportbikes when I was in my teens. I was a more cautious rider then than I am now.
Idk why, but now it feels like I have a death wish and push things. I guess to be fair I wouldn't mind dying.

Alright, bike got home safe, when I started testing battery had 12.8V.

I first did a drain (current draw) test. When I had the multimeter set to 200mikro, it gave me a 0.3 reading, but I couldn't affect that by pulling any fuses so I assume that's a fluke. No parasitic load then.

Next up charging system output test: 5k RPM is supposed to yield 13.5-15V with high beam on. I got 12.6 with low beam only. Problem detected. Clymer says go check alternator and R/R.

I check the pins that connect Alt. to R/R, they all give results well above the required 70V@5kRPM. The stator coil continuity is OK.

Now comes the punchline: to test R/R you supposedly need a "suzuki circuit tester" and I thought that was the end for my home wrenching, but now I'm looking online and it looks like a normal-ass multimeter.

Now my question: is it worth it disassembling the rear plastic parts to get at the R/R when it seems to be the only thing left that could be causing the charging problem? Is there anything else I should check? (1/2)
>>
(2/2)
On that note, I figured out why my horn doesn't work; it seems the contacts aren't very good anymore. I'm not sure if honking vibrates them out of position or they're bent, but they don't connect unless i'm pulling the connector forward, like on broken headphones. Is there some sort of conductive lube I could get into those things so it works?

My Grandfather taught me how to ride when I was about 5 or 6 on a Honda Trail 70. First street bike when I was 18. Didn't have my first road accident till I was 46/47 ( 4ish years ago ) when some dickhead forced me into oncoming traffic while I was passing, fucker drove off. I clipped an Audi head on at probably better than 100mph closing speed, I got lucky and only caught my left boot solid on the bumper. Ended up with a purple big toe nail and three stitches in my heel where my bone tried to force it's way out of my body and got stopped by the boot.

Good choice anon, I've ridden all of the new 500s and owned a 500R for two years. Out of all of them, I found the 500F the most enjoyable to ride, the 500R is the same as the F but with narrower bars which just makes it harder to lever around. 500X is also decent, and CMX500 is a bit different to the rest as the engine has a different map.

500F is a good choice, my bike never skipped a beat, is reasonably punchy, good on fuel etc.

If you wanted to tour, I'd go for the 500X as it's got a comfier seat, riding position and a decent sized windscreen.

Can't comment on aftermarket seats as I haven't used them, the OEM one is pretty comfy but anything aftermarket is probably better so go with what you like.

The bike doesn't have a reserve but it does have a fuel gauge, you probably have about 30 miles left when the last bar is flashing on the fuel gauge, but I saw about 200-250 miles per tank on mine.
