Hello, /Daily Blog Talk/

I just found out I may have autism and I am finding it hard to cope. Yesterday, on the way to night shift, I stopped next to a school-age girl and her father. She looked to be 16, which is the legal age here, so I reved my bike and nodded to her. She smiled and looked to her dad then back to me so I waved. She smiled again, but did look away. Being the responsible biker I am I popped a wheelie when the robot turn green. I came down to hard and at an angle, I just about lost it but recovered by twisting hard to get back in the air. I know she must have seen me fuck it up, so I sped away at 190kph.

I had a question, around how much would a mechanic charge to get a 41 year old kawasaki up and running. Its not in bad shape at all desu. Electical is fine, beside the horn. depends how trustworthy the mechanic is and specifically what is wrong with the bike. you're looking between several hundred to several thousand dollars you're not going to get much help without giving a little information

you say all the electrics are fine but how can you say that if the bike doesn't run
>>
>>17520979
I throw a battery in, the low and high beams work, as well as blinkers on both ends. I have compression, im not sure about spark desu, i know for a fact that the carbs should be cleaned and what not and the engine as well, which id like someone who knows what theyre doing to do. But other then that im not sure whats wrong with it. Should i get eveything replaced?

>>
>>17520995
How long has it been sitting?

If it has been sitting a really long time:
It's unlikely the engine needs opening up, but definitely drain and replace the oil, coolant(if it has water cooling), and replace the filters. dump out anything sitting in the gas tank.

Remove spark plugs and try to get a peek inside, if you see rust it could possibly be seized. In any case though, squirt in a spoonful of fresh oil to each cylinder and MANUALLY crank the engine without the spark plugs to lubricate the rings. let it sit a while before trying to run after doing this. Get new spark plugs.

Carbs would definitely need completely disassembling and cleaning out. Get yourself the workshop manual for the bike and anyone slightly competent could do it with some patience and a methodical approach, be careful not to misplace parts and wear glasses when spraying carb cleaner through all the ports. you will probably need to replace most of the seals and just check that the float isn't punctured.

if it isn't getting spark, just check the leads are still in good shape electrically and not corroded anywhere but beyond that it really depends what your bike is equipped with, a mechanic could troubleshoot the electrics easier
>>
>>17521048
Good recommendations here.
Better than this board usually gets.
If you are lucky, you can find a good old school mechanic, if will do stuff cheap for the sheer love of old bikes. You can generally hang out around your local road race track and listen and learn from the old heads.
Good on you for looking after the old bikes...they are well worth it when you do them up.

And no.
>>
>>17521177
Rude.

You should get an SC Projects exhaust and tune so you can shoot flames out of the exhaust.
>>
>>17521180

Actually the SC generally shoots flames before you map the engine because it'll run too rich so the excess fuel burns and makes mad flames, but the problem is there is that the SC, Austin Racing and a few others actually reduce the power of the engine until you remap the fuelling, which requires a ~£400 race ecu. Akrapovic and Arrow exhausts apparently give about 5hp before you play with the ECU, so I'll probably be going with one of those, also Arrow is affordable whereas an Akra slip on runs you back about £1000.

>>17521200

It's fine, I'll just grab the Arrow and get an ECU at some point, the ECU really helps iron out the low speed fuelling anyway, as well as squeezing a little more power out from the exhaust.
>>

>>
>>17521204

The older tuono has a different map you get switched over when you put aftermarket cans on it. Newer ones don't have that?
>>
>>17521210
it's a second hand bike, and I left the hand warmers on which put the nail in.
>>
>>17521212

Surely the manual one just adjusts the quantity of fuel rather than the actual race ecu that changes the nature of the fuelling.
>>
>>17521216

You can recharge a dead battery, the dealer shouldn't have to replace a battery because you fucked up, it hasn't had any fault you just drained it because you did something stupid.

>>17521215

Only Akrapovic cans that you buy as an extra from Aprilia, so you have to take it to a dealer to get the map code put into the ECU. Aprilia only supports Akrapovic on the newer models so if you want to do anything with any other model, you have to get a race ecu and get it mapped by a third party.
>>

>>
>>17521225

You don't need tips for sticker bombing you spoon, you just put a shit load of stickers on it and be done with it.

>dealer shouldn't have to replace a battery because you fucked up

>>
>>17521236

You have to take the battery out and put it on a proper charger, your bike won't be able to charge it from dead, just keep it topped up when it's already healthy.

>eh, thats what you are paying for when you go dealer

No you pay so they replace something if it's faulty, that's what a warranty does, warranty doesn't cover your incompetence.
>>

>The only time a full remap should be required is with a full system

Typically yeah, but the cat is part of the end can on the newer models, so if you take the end can off you decat the bike too, so it massively changes the fuelling. Also you can only get the Akra specific map from Aprilia if you buy an Akra through them, anything else you're on your own with getting it sorted.
>>
>>17521238
what ever I don't have a "proper charger" so they can do that.

I have been trying to find some but nobody local seems to have anything, they only have the provisions to alter race ECUs rather than using the encrypted codes that the stock ones use.

Keep them away from anything hot, which shouldn't be an issue on the front fender, otherwise you should be fine.

>>17521279
You should def ask on apriliaforum for one
>>
>>17521286

I have and the general consensus is you've got to get the code from Aprilia when you buy an Akra can from them as an extra, and each code is different so you can't just use somebody else's. The whole thing is a major pain in the dick to be honest, hence why I'm probably gonna go for an Arrow as I get power gains without messing with the ECU.

They make bikes for comfortable for people who are not jap sized, which I appreciate. Not quite as fast as a liter Peter but I can iron butt on it with ease

nice
my dad has a tt600 and it does feel like a pretty powerful 600,
better low end than others i've tried and also a very good top end power. I think it might be just as powerful as the newer 600s but it's definitely heavier. the ergonomics are a perfect blend between comfort and sport too

what exactly went wrong with the engine? it's a noisy as fuck engine on this one too and i'm thinking there's something wrong with the cam chain system maybe but other owners just say it's the way they are

Either get someone who knows how to help you at least diagnose what needs doing if you can't do that looming for a smaller private place with good reviews and maybe a rep for custom work would be your best bet, you can try to agree a price for everything on an individual basis. First get them to look it over and write you a list of faults then look up what you can do yourself. Also invest in a hynes manual if they do one for your bike they are I'll tell you how to do everything.

No I get what he's saying, there's a bit of a spectrum when it comes to sports tourers, some are slightly leant more towards sport (Triumph 1050ST, Honda VFR800, Kawasaki Z1000SX), some sit just about in the middle (Honda VFR1200, BMW R1200RS, BMW F800GT) and some are closer to full on tourers, (Yamaha FJR1300, BMW R1200RT, Kawasaki GTR1400).

Does anyone else watch videos of "close calls" between motorcycle riders and cars on Youtube and think that most of the motorcyclists are massively overreacting? I see them revving their engines, honking their horns, pulling up next to the drivers and yelling profanities at them and I just shake my head. I have people pull out in front of me, merge into me, come up too fast behind me while I'm stopped, etc and I just shake it off. Sometimes I'll beep my horn or look at them and shake my head / throw my hands up in exasperation but that's as far as I go. It's just part of riding a bike that you've gotta accept in my experience, there's no need to cut the person off, get off the bike, go up to their window, and cuss them out.

>>
>>17521632
>Sometimes I'll beep my horn or look at them and shake my head / throw my hands up in exasperation but that's as far as I go

Thats about all I usually do as well. Once I kicked a guys door, but only because he was in the right lane merging into me in the left, pushing me onto oncoming traffic and a beep wasnt enough to get him to look away from his cellphone.

Even then I didnt kick it hard enough to dent it, just enough for him to pay some fucking attention.

thats because BMW and triumph riders tend to actually ride their bikes and rack up a ton of miles so no wonder eventually something gives out.

Ride a jap bike 100,000 miles and it would fall apart. Ride a beemer and maybe some electrics might need replacing eventually.

Also beemer owners are way more likely to report a problem and get it repaired because they actually take care of their bike.

You definitely have to be ultra careful, my buddy recently crashed his CBR1000. He's not entirely sure what caused his skid around a slight curve and subsequent highside since he concussed the fuck out of himself and doesn't remember it, but I think he rolled on the throttle too hard or touched his rear brake a tad too much, especially considering he'd just put non-street-legal race brakes on it that were even more aggressive than the stock ones. It's not that a litrebike is going to fuck you in any way any other bike could from erroneous rider input, but that you have substantially smaller margins of error the further you push the bike and yourself to your limits because of the amount of power you're dealing with.

Basically it's lay the bike down on it's side so the oil doesn't run out.

Put some extra play in the clutch cable if you are cable.

Pull the clutch cover, put the 3 or 6 bolts for the pressure plate, pull it out. Slide all the friction/plates out. Put in the new ones. Pu the pressure plate back on. Tighten the bolts to torque spec ( get a cheap torque wrench, don't guess ). Put the cover back on and tighten bolts to spec, adjust cable if needed.

what puzzles me is that some bikes are 1000+cc but have about 110bhp, meanwhile another has nearly 200bhp, so does that mean some litre bikes are actually kind of tame?

yeah

My bike is'nt a liter but has only 120hp and a load of torque, I still wouldn't really consider it tame. Having a smooth throttle is necessary but its still just a motorcycle.

Yes a literbike is technically a bike of approximately 1000cc's but a majority of what people call literbikes is a specific type of 1000cc bike...a superbike. So you see a 100chp V-Strom but can't readily compare it to a 200chp superbike. Both approx. 1000cc's yes, but completely different power and the way they make power.

no special tools for disassembling the clutch itself?
thought it was spring loaded n shiet
>>
>>17522302
Bhp doesn't come from capacity alone, you know?

The Yamaha XV950 has a 950cc v twin and 50 bhp, the CB1100 a 1100cc inline four and less than 90 bhp, etc.
>>
>>17522422
Hp is torque over RPM
A gutless engine will have to rotate more
A lazy engine will need more displacement
Also shaft and belt drive rob your engine of almost 30% of it's power
>>
>>17522406
>thought it was spring loaded n shiet
It is, the 3 or 6 bolts that hold the pressure plate in place will release the spring pressure as you undo them. Do like 5 turns on each and move to the next one, keep going till they will spin out by finger, by then the springs will be unloaded.

Has anyone upgraded their weak little piss ant horn on their bike to something substantially louder that might actually have a chance of getting a car driver's attention?

Would it be fair to consider the CMX500 Rebel to be a poor man's CB1100? They both have the same wheelbase albeit a rake difference by a single degree.

I've had several people who were texting and driving drift into my lane recently, I want something that will actually shock them and get their attention rather than just melodiously tootle at them.
>>
>>17522688
Ya. I put some Hella knockoff on my KTM. It's pretty loud. Most importantly is to make sure the horn can get its full current. A lot of bikes have the horn power running through the ignition and handlebar switch, which both provide some resistance. It should make a big difference just to put it on a relay wired straight to the battery.
>>
>>17522713
>clutch in
>BRAP BRAP BRAP
>>
>>17522688

My Fireblade's stock horn is pretty loud. Makes me jump every time I accidentally hit it instead of my turn single cancel.

The rebel and the cb1100 have different engine configurations. The rebel is a gutless little v-twin. It's really only praised by some because it's so small and weak that it is a popular learners bike. It's completely unfit for highway use. So in that sense it is "the poor mans version" of a real motorcycle.

The actual poor mans version would probably be the cb600f hornet.

I was poking fun at the regular demonization of motorcycling culture by the media as a parallel to the American phenomenon of misrepresenting firearm customization as a sign of violent and psychopathic tendencies, (c.f. 'babykilling assault clips').
