I'm that novice-anon with that red sv650s from a few /dbt/ threads ago.

short story even shorter, dropped the bike. Broke the ball end off my front brake lever, bent my rear brake lever and my right side foot rest bracket broke. Ground the FUCK out of my just-installed frame sliders too.

Are aftermarket levers shit or can I get away with an oem-style pair of those? Also can I bend a brake lever back or is it wise to get a new one? Its only bent in horizontally by ~15 degrees or so

Levers are levers there's not one brand that's better than the other. I'd get new ones because they're cheap as fuck aftermarket and I'd want them to match but bending it back is fine if you're not willing to fork out 10 bucks

Coming off the highway going ~115km/h. 2 fairly wide sweeping corners were just fine, I mentally blanked that bikes don't like to brake while you're leaned over. Tried to stand the bike up and start braking, started it too late on the short straight before the comparatively sharp corner onto eglinton.

Aimed for the cut-out portion of the curb for pedestrians but the rear wheel was locked so "lol no shit steering for you" bike ended up half on the sidewalk half on the road.

handlebar adjusters moved and one loosened off, so right side handle bar was sketchy as fuck. Right brake lever assembly broke in half so it was just dangling.

Called CAA and ended up waiting 2.5 hours for a tow that didn't show up. Called the local police non-emergency number and got a green light from the cop on the phone to limp the bike home (~2 km) even though I'm on my M1 and it was night time by then. Cop gave me his badge number incase I got stopped by a uniform. Buddy followed me home with his 4 ways on.

sup /dbt/, I'm really starting to zero in on the bike I want to buy, but I'm looking for any little bit of insight people are willing to share. Right now I'm still at a tossup between a DR650SE and a KLR650 (dur so many people likely get stuck here). I've more or less decided that if I can get a DR for the right price I'll go for it. However, based on the prices of used bikes around here I am far more likely to get a KLR.
My question right now is about the KLR. Should I just go for the classic style (which is more likely to be cheaper, but definitely older bike) or should I try and hold out to get one of the newer models? (the new front end does not bother me). Are there any years in particular that I should avoid? Or even better are there years that stand out as the better choice?
Thanks yo.

close mindedness is how you get through life happily.

everything everyone says is bullshit, and they have to prove it's not. if it turns out it's not, you can always say YOU were wrong, and that's alright. a man can admit he was wrong. but you don't want to have to say THEY were wrong after proving it yourself, because then you have failed by another person's ideas and that fucking sucks, especially if it's something like a $3000+ purchase of a motorcycle, that may or may not end up crashed, or at least with a scraped up exhaust pipe, before you have a chance to realize it's shit and sell it for what you bought it for.

when someone insists that a harley is good I say "alright, let me take one for a spin and we'll see" and they quickly back off upon seeing my immaculate 600 and realizing that i would probably scrape their new chromed out drag pipes pulling out of the driveway, stop, and say "nevermind, this bike is shit".

Came on here last week asking about starting an older bandit 600 that has been sitting for almost 11 months.

Well I threw on a new fuel filter, washed the tank with some gas and dumped that, filled the tank and drained all the standing fuel from the pipework and carbs, charged up the battery and it started after cranking for a few seconds and runs perfectly fine. Fuck yeah.

Because it's an SV650. It's a cheap budget bike.
A set of levers is fucking retardproof, but you might be the next one to prove that wrong.
Years ago, some dumb fucks managed to install them incorrectly and crashed. They go onto the squidbro forums and write a bad review. Meanwhile, literally millions of bikes are running the same quality of chinese levers without issues. I just used the cheap silver OEM copies if I needed a lever for years.

Not that the cheapness is necessarily a bad thing, but don't get caught up in the fucking meme of spending every dollar you find on mods for it. It's a bike that you upgrade suspension on and ride the fuck out of.

You're kind of in a bind with it being a new generation of bike and parts being mostly scarce. Thankfully, Suzuki uses the same parts on every goddamn bike they make because it saves money. The levers are likely the same as their other cheap bikes.

Go to partzilla and find the lever and see which bikes it's a part for a search for that instead of the SV search doesn't yield good results.

>>
>>17487052
Yeah, that's because Yamaha makes good shit. Get a name brand, Japanese scooter and you're good for a long time. Buy chinese and you're looking at maybe a few thousand miles.
>>
>>17487200
depends what you want the bike for
you should have a fair idea which one would be more fun...
change the gearing and use shit tires on the streetfighter and it won't cost too much to run aside from insurance etc
>>
>>17487200
No bike is economical. Get a fun one you wont regret. Unless it's your first bike, then get a cheap fun one.
>>
>>17487206
it will be my 2nd.

Right now I can't decide between the R1200R, F800ST or K1200RS. All similar price, the F800 is the 'sensible' option, the R1200R is the stylish option and the K1200 is excessive (170bhp).

I am a bmw fag and regret nothing.
>>
>>17487206
what?
a mid 2000s 250 is stupidly cheap to buy, stupidly cheap to maintain, easily should get >65mpg (around 3.5L/100km), tires cost barely anything even for high quality rubber, usually fits into the cheapest registration category and gets some of the cheapest insurance rates.
>>
>>17487216
Maybe if you're not doing the maintenance you "should" the way you "should", it's economical, but you "should" be having a dealer do valve checks, check all the bearings everywhere, use the OEM infinite chains that necessitate swingarm removal, replace all caliper bolts with new ones after removing, etc.
>>
>>17487216
>>17487223
Hell even if you go full poc with the regular maintenance, you'll still end up costing more than a cheap car.

Here's the thing

It cots more than a cheap car because, by no means, do you HAVE to maintain a car, in this culture. Bald and dry tires, drive slower. Loose suspension parts, not a problem until bad shocks cause the car to launch itself from the road or shake itself apart. No oil changes, expect to call for a tow when the engine seizes with a whimper. Bad brakes, maintain a following distance. Fucked alignment, deal with it. Odd noises, whatever. It's just a car. You don't give a fuck. You just want to get to work without spending an extra 2+ hours walking or waiting for buses. if being so cheap and niggerly is not a legal option, you can lease some base model economy shit nissan in order to pass inspections and get a new one every 2 years. And if you have to pay for a vehicle, it might as well be an all-weather all-rounder like a car, even if you don't need all the space it takes up on the road all the time.

You could ride a shitbike as well as you could drive a shitbox, but we don't ride bikes because we have to. We ride bikes because we want to. So we care.

if you want to see what cheap motorcycling looks like, what happens when a bike is the transportation you have to have because you can neither afford a car nor find a place to park one, the third world is teeming with barely running mopeds that use the rider's shoes as brakes.

All the money you just "saved" by not maintaining your car just went to costlier insurance. Whereas my very good coverage bike insurance is $120/yr.
To work on motorcycles, only basic hand tools are required. If the bike's PO is good he'll still have the toolkit that came with it. If you know how to use a computer, it's piss easy to find cheap parts for maintenance.

>bike + registration fee
$2020
>moto permit
$30
>insurance (yr)
$120
>helmet (dot + snell)
$150

$2320 and boom, I'm on the road. That's not even the dirt cheap way. That's with a 5k miles, fully functional bike I'm still riding to this day. It's 350cc, I get 67mpg and it's $20/yr to renew registration.

Fuckin beats having to cycle to work and is cheaper for me than a car. Over time I got more gear, a license, and bought maintenance parts when the price was right so over time they're minor expensive on my income.
AND
And....
I can hoon the shit out of it on weekends because it beats a shitbox.

The 390 is a pretty fun bike all around, but expect ktm reliability and price ( not good at all )

If you have enough money to buy new, go for it, they will take care of everything. If not go for the alternatives.

For a fun beginner monocylinder i'd get a drz400, or ninja,mt03,r3...

Honestly i'd buy some used ~600 of any reliable brand instead.

>>
>>17489444
Checked, and maybe not. I'm not trauma doctor but he slid into the curb on his side so if anything that entire side worth of limbs and ribs is fucked, and maybe the human body is jelly enough to prevent a lot of damage to the spinal chord

Is the California Grom the same as Groms sold in the rest of the country?

I'm asking because I really want one, I also have a friend who lives in California that wants to learn how to ride. My thinking was to fly out to Cali, buy a Grom, ride around for a bit with my friend, then ship the bike home.

But I'd rather not do that if it's a California specific model, cause fuck that.
>>
>>17489444
Shitty that he hit the curb, but he did it in pretty much the best way possible. Probably a lot of broken bones, internal bleeding, and punctured lung but I'd be surprised if he was paralyzed or dead.

Just take it easy the first few days, make sure you're really comfortable with braking, shifting, low speed turns, starting from a stop, etc. before you go out on the main roads.

If you have lots of hills near you, practice starting from a stop on a hill so you don't panic and stall it or drop it when you have to do it with a bunch of cars behind you at an intersection.
>>
So, how much of a meme are these? They look retarded levels of fun.

i'll do the honors and point out that the FZ6R is not at all the same thing as the FZ6. some things about it might actually be better for you as a novice, but many things might not. just want you to be aware. see thread for some discussion and examples: http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforum/showthread.php?149745-FZ6-vs-FZ6R

If you're not a woman or a manlet it's too small for you.
>>
>>17489566
if you can't support the bike with one leg you should try and get a bit stronger add some squats, forward and side lunges every day you don't even need a gym

at least just learn to shuffle the weight from one foot to the other like when you set the side stand down / change sides on the peg and practice stopping and getting your foot down on hills just start with small ones and you will learn how to balance the bike

my dad is just 5'5 and rides a triumph tiger 800c and he can manage fine without changing anything on the bike. he drives off with his foot on the road and the bike part leaned over and has to be careful on slippery ground not to start the bike doing doughnuts. he has never let his height discourage him from riding any bike he's tried and you should be the same if you do happen to drop it just remember what went wrong and try not to do it again
