Americans don't believe in car/bike companies making more than one thing ala Honda and often need government bailouts because of it. Something about muh brand image and good ol boys do one thing well.

Eric took that to the extreme and decided to only make high end sportbikes, which don't sell very well. Eric ran out of money.

So I'm more of a four wheels kinda guy, but I'm moving soon for work and I should have a lot more income and I'm thinking about getting/learning to ride a bike. I've ridden dirt bikes before briefly, though I'm not so experienced. The trouble I come into when I'm looking at bikes, and I have a similar view about cars too, is that they all seem just so heavy for what they are. I have a racing kart that weighs just over 200 lbs I would say (365 with me in it + like 40 lbs of ballast and filled with fuel), and can do well over 70mph easily with just 27 hp.

So my questions is, why are bikes so heavy? I did a quick google search the other day and the lowest weight I could find was like 340 lbs or something like that. Are bikes really so much more complex and heavy that they need to weigh a full 150 lbs (ish) more than a kart?

Has anyone else here built/know of any bikes that are sub-300 lbs? I dont think power is all that important if weight is low.

Try going 75mph with 20mph gusts of side wind on a sub 300lbs bike. You don't feel the weight when your moving if the bike was designed and built while weight shavings is always an improvement there is something to be said about moderate weight and stability.

wind resistance is a huge factor, if you want to stick to sub 300lb you might look at the ktm 450/500exc bikes
theres a lot more going on with bikes as well such as proper suspension, real ergonomics, engines designed to last a hell of a lot longer than a kart engine.

Obama deported more people than Bush and Clinton.

>>
>>17480327
>>17480331
Hmm, I guess I didn't think about that. A kart is much wider and obviously has four wheels, so stability isn't really an issue when it comes to wind. Also very low center of gravity.

Wouldn't it being lighter mean that you can correct easier/faster though to wind changes, like if you need to lean or something?
>>
>>17480292
You must be 21 yo tops. If not, basic white trash.

Also it has an onboard computer with EGT, tach, lap time display + other controls, GPS tracking and lap by lap comparison capabilities.
>>
>>17480308
Good bike, a little gaudy for my tastes but hey different strokes.
>>
>>17480349
yeah you can correct faster but you also are affected to a much greater extent on light bikes.
my big adv bike is heavy so its pretty stable in wind gusts but still needs just as much lean to hold in crosswinds.
imo just take a MSF course that supplies bikes and then go test ride a few different bikes to see what you like and how each one behaves for you
>>
>>17480349
Bikes are astonishingly self-stabilizing by design. The bike straightens and balances itself when rolling, so there's not much correction needed.

Heavier bikes tend to be less affected by the wind. This becomes even more true since they mostly come with better aerodynamics and less twitchy steering geometry so they are even more inclined to stay on their path.
No matter the bike, it will be easy enough to keep control of in the wind, but the heavy ones take less effort. You really only feel the weight when standing still.
>>
>>17480371
it's a bobber version
>>
>>17480355
>>17480366
Yeah that's about as much shit as a MX bike or light enduro has. They can come in at about 200lbs. Then the bikes still have much larger wheels and tires, more controls, and full suspension which is pretty heavy.

Get into street bikes and they become significantly heavier because all the road regulated equipment, multicylinder engines, and parts made to last significantly longer than a kart.

Thanks for the advice. Would you say 350ish pounds would be pretty resistant to crosswinds and stuff?

For example, the KTM RC390 or the Ninja 300?
>>
>>17480449
350lbs is fairly light for a bike still. I have a 330lb dual sport that gets blown around a lot but it's very different from a street bike. The ninjette should be a fine first bike.

Once you ride that for a while you'll realize the weight is nothing and it's worth it to have a better all around bike.

I can hit 75mph on my Grom (roughly 220lbs) and a good blast or a pressure wave from an oncoming big rig can push me all over the fuckin road. It's fun but terrifying, no such thing as an easy ride at those speeds on a Grom, you're fighting for survival the entire time.
>>
>>17480504
>I can go faster than this bikes top speed with someone 170lbs on it
>>
>>17480486
Thats way too heavy for me. Not that I couldn't ride it, its just that it is against my philosophy for vehicles. For example I want a sub-2000 lbs car... But everyone has their own tastes, this is just mine.

>>17480468
Yeah, I guess its just something I'll have to go out and test and see how I like them.

Kind of a random question I guess, but is it common/hard to swap engines on bikes? Are there bikes that are heavily swapped? For example, its really common to put huge V8s in miatas, or like for example the MR2 Spyder is 2zz or K20 swapped all the time.

I dont want or need a lot of power. Fun is in the corners, not on throttle application. Going fast in a straight line is boring as hell, and so is drag racing. I come from kart racing, as I alluded to in my previous posts, so i have a certain perspective built in..
>>
>>17480632
>>17480623
it depends what you're intended use is. Nothing wrong with lanesplitting on a small capacity bike to commute to work and get sweet mpgees.
Getting the best you can out of a small bike. Motorcycling is about doing more with less.
I personally have an Africa Twin but it's probably a bit excessive for commuting and as a toy.

>>
>>17480643
300s are hilariously slow. Trust me senpai, go for at least 60hp. You'll appreciate it when you have to take highway every now and again.
>>17480632
They're slower than a stock economy car. No reason to buy unless you're on a cuck license system.
>>
>>17480649
If you say so
>>
>>17480656
Thanks miss no idea what you're talking about
>>
>>17480643
I'm not the guy you're replying to, but I bought a GS500F as my first bike. The biggest problem I had is that the GS got out of its comfort zone on the highway after about 65mph and started getting really shaky. The CB500's and the 650cc bikes I have ridden work well on the highway, get good mpg, and are light/heavy enough to be fun
>>
>>17480654
Catch me on the touge tho

>>17480656
I mean I'm gonna go and test some eventually, so well see. I still value light weight over power though, but I hadn't thought of the crosswind issue before so I have to kind of re-evaluate a little bit.
>>
>>17480662
>no idea what I'm talking about
I DD a Ford Focus hatchback. It does 140mph.

An R3 caps out at 115, and takes a fuckload longer to get there.

>>17480665
Honestly, hp matters more than displacement. aim for 60hp but no more than 100 if you want to go slower and stick to lighter weights.

Obviously this doesn't apply to dualsports.
>>
>>17480665
>I still value light weight over power though, but I hadn't thought of the crosswind issue before so I have to kind of re-evaluate a little bit.
it depends what you find yourself riding the most. IF you commute in an urban setting you want a narrow bike that's light.
If you slowly cruiser on the highway then something that idle's low and is smooth is more the go, where size and weight is less an issue.
>>
>>17480666
No, your dad's bf drives one. You ride the bus
>>
>>17480666
>An R3 caps out at 115, and takes a fuckload longer to get there.
most motorbikes that are comfortable and compromise have low top speeds. Mostly because gearing and aerodynamics are different on bikes to cars.
My CB900 Hornet would destroy most any car, including a V8 twin turbo mercedes off the lights. However the bike had a much lower top speed.
>>
>>17480680
Nah m8. I also ride a literbike. I've probably been riding longer than you as well. Any other questions?
>>
>>17480648
Are you red or white AT guy?
>>
>>17480675
Well I live in Texas, so most roads are long straight highways out here. I definitely would like to not live in a heavily urban downtown type area, but as I said I'll be moving soon but I dont know exactly where I will end up as far as living arrangements go. I have to sort that out still.
>>
>>17480690
I have a nice red AT in QLD Australia. I haven't posted pics of it on here yet.
>>
>>17480684
An R3 does not accelerate fast and if you think it does you need a reality check. They do 0-60 in about as fast as a mid-2000s ponycar and beyond that they're civic-tier.
>>
>>17480692
>Well I live in Texas, so most roads are long straight highways out here
well yeh, I can see how a cheap 300cc twin out there might not fit the bill.
I do live in a congested Australian major city and commuting on a gigantic africa twin with wide bars with bark busters makes it difficult to split between ute's/SUVs.
A CB400 would be much quicker in traffic here for example.

it's better quality. Look at the chrome on the bolts on a CB400 (or any honda made in japan) then look at the bolts on any KTM. You will notice the bolts on the Honda's are nicely chromed and won't got rusty shitty gray in 6 months (source, i've owned a KTM 690 and three hondas)
>>
>>17480734
same thing with the anodising on the crank cases. Look at an old Suzuki GSXr 600RR and then look at any Honda (for example my old CB900 hornet) after 5 years the suzuki's crank case is all faded light gray but the honda's is still nice and shiny.
Look at the exhaust pipe on a Ninja 250 after a year commuting in the rain, spotted with rusty spots, vs my CB900 at 10 years old at the exhaust pipe chrome is still nice and shiny.
Quality usually adds weight and money.

Quoting top speed as any sort of measure for bikes is just retarded. All 300's can do highway speeds and overtake reasonably fast. Many people can and do daily 300's even with non Euro regulations because they are
A) light so you can filter traffic
B) easy as fuck to ride

If you wanna go super fast then just sell and buy a bigger bike, you don't need a 0-60 of 3 seconds to just ride around and enjoy it
>>
>>17480836
>>>17480666
>you don't need a 0-60 of 3 seconds to just ride around and enjoy it
You don't need a full auto high capacity salt rifle for hunting. You don't need a high end graphics card to play video games. You don't need a $10,000 sound system to enjoy music. You don't need a $4,000 guitar if you're into playing guitar.
People tend not to pay too much mind about what they NEED when it's about their hobbies.

I bought that road star today for $2300. It's a 2001 with 12k miles on it. Lots of extras too like a hypercharger, full cobra exhaust, jet kit to compensate for pipes and hypercharger, and the guy threw in some other accessories. Only issue on the thing is the windshield cracking from age and being stored in Phoenix for almost 20 years. I just ordered a new one for $150 online.

this is the bare budget version of carrying shit on a bike. anything with grab rails or some kind of point to tie down can easily do this.
if you're buying more groceries than this you can just buy groceries twice a week or re-evaluate what and how much you're eating

Looking at a bike for $600 on my Local CL
It's a Yamaha Enduro 1974
Lights and Mirrors were taken off so that it could be a dirt bike. Not street legal obviously.
No paperwork or anything, guy says he'll write a bill of sale.
My question is how much would it cost to put lights and mirrors back on to make it street legal again?
Would it be worth it?

Also, he says the carburetor needs to be cleaned.

I'm asking because I want to get into motorcycles and figured a beater like this would be good to get my cycle legs on. If I wreck it or crash then no biggie.

Thank you /o/

I dunno, if everything works properly I'd just use it to mess around the neighbourhood with if you can spare the money but I wouldn't trust it much. No paperwork probably means it's either never been street legal or it's stolen. Carbs need 'cleaning' could actually mean all sorts of difficult problems. 1974 and all the prior information mean it's had a pretty long and rough life. It depends how much effort, time and money you're really willing to put into it and whether $600 is worth it to you in the first place. It could easily end up looking like $1000 at a low estimate and probably more like $1500-2000 total to get it in a good condition

Yes. A high revving OHC V4 co-designed by porsche that would make the japs shit themselves, in a relatively modern chassis with the fuel located lower down near the engine for an improved COG. They could squeeze ~130hp out of it in the mid 70s. After around 15 million and months of succesful testing, HD canned it and focused on the evo because riders who give a damn buy cheap and the japs did cheap better, while riders who don't will gladly shovel 20 grand into your ass in exchange for an opportunity to pretend to be a meth dealing road pirate.

>>17481866
Dude. Two things.
- Title is no problem. Make the previous owner go to the county auditor with you so they can fill out a recovery form in person, in front of the clerk. Accept no other answer.
- It's a Yamaha from the '70s? Start your search for replacement parts by looking to see if there's a dedicated enough fanbase for somebody to continue to manufacture them. If that's true, go to a fan forum and look up other common problems with the bike, ask them for advice. If that clears, get the bike inspected by a real mechanic, a fuckered carburetor is common enough people just assume everything else will work itself out. Don't be "people."
If all of those work out right, buy a 15-21 year old rebel ($1500) or nighthawk ($900) anyways. By this point in the process, you should understand why buying something that old as your first is a shitty idea, and a Honda twin will never leave you stranded.

I only know the euro spec 250 ninja with EFI, but it looks like the original airbox is gone and therefore the crankcase breather hole has nowhere to go anymore.

There would probably have been a hose running into the airbox.

>>17482307
If it runs good, theres no need. The crank case breather hose is only for emission
>>
>>17482307
stick your finger in and see if it goes anywhere. If it doesn't, then it is just a mounting point. The filters you do have look dirty as fuck, you may want to replace them

Anything I should avoid when buying a helmet? Also are there any not so obvious pros to modular ones?
>>
>>17482311
it only runs when i start it with the choke fully on but dies when i let it go completely. That just a dirty carb?
>>
>>17482313
if you wear glasses you might not have a choice

also look for "touring" helmets with built in sun visors. slightly heavier, but actually useful if you're not a weekend twisties type rider and DD a bike.
>>
>>17482313
Major thing to do when buying a helmet is to try it on, in person. Do not buy a helmet if you haven't tried on the same model already. If you are going to spend a lot of money on any single piece of gear, make it the helmet, a good helmet makes riding much more enjoyable.

Modulars are usually heavier than full face because of the mechanism for the flip and are also more expensive because of that. A $200 modular is going to be similar to a $150 or less fullface in features.

does it also do so if it is warm?
Because your bike does not have a airbox anymore and (probably "Racing") podfilters instead it gets more air. If you or the previous owner did not change the jetting it now runs leaner than before.
This might be a problem as leaner means hotter and hotter can mean an engine failure.
Make sure it is jetted correctly for pod filters

anyway. Due to running leaner you need to engage the choke as this enriches the fuel air mixture.

btw whats that unconnected hose for between the pod filters? Where does it go?
>>
>>17482311
no the crankcase breather isn't just for emissions. That's to keep a stable pressure in the crankcase as temps change and shit. If the hole is blocked off it will probably build up too much pressure and eventually blow out oil seals. If the hole is open straight to the environment it will suck in dirt and be bad for your engine.
>>
>>17482327

Never ever have I had a problem with a full face helmet. Just... remember to remove glasses before putting on or taking off the helmet. Cause that shit hurts. Arai or die!

>>
>>17482351
Probably the leftovers of a retarded PAIR system delet. It should be replaced with a block off plate or plug.

Most bikes have a hose running from the airbox to the exhaust valves that injects fresh air into the exhaust stream to help unused fuel burn up before exiting the pipes. There's a valve in the system that uses vacuum from the carbs to switch on and off.
>>
>>17482348

I had a blue and white one years ago. I ditched the rear rotary shock for a standard unit, saving over 20lbs. Yosh full Ti system. Opened the airbox, sealed it completely with siliconed metal plates. Removed secondary air injection. Added a Power Commander.
One of the loudest bikes I ever owned. Also had the most jacked up balance point of any bike I have ever wheelied. It felt like it was literally about .25" away from wearing the bike as a hat before it was happy.

Another bike that I bought new and owned for less than 4 months. On to the next thing, always!

You should wait, look into a dealership if you're after something small
The bit about proper maintenance is 200% true. New riders either don't know or don't care.
In addition, prices are inflated by dipshits who decide to upgrade because they're "bored," instead of garnering some level of experience while owning their 250. They feel cheated because it's less than a year into their three year loan, and want you to pay the difference.

If you want something that keeps that range at dealership, I suggest looking into a small cbr. The 250 just fell to ~2500, and leftover 300's are on sale hovering around 3k. Check cycle trader, as they're like the official classifieds for all dealerships in the US. Then use your phone instead of ct's contact system so you can act ignorant unless that price is needed.
The majority telling you a ss will be fine are the kind of straight line riders from the first half of my post. Don't listen. Learn the fundamentals. Upgrade to a bike that fits your riding style after you can say you actually have one.
