Copied because late post:

Does anybody else dream of being that pissant in his home garage during the next motorbike revolution?
Electric or hydrogen? Brushless engines? Power by computer or direct modulation of controller?

It's a little late to get the Army to pay for three engineering degrees, but I'm hoping the maths from software is good for something.

I've met a few motorcycle touring in the third world. Most seem kinda dykey but none were actually lesbians afaik. The ones who ride alone we're 20-30ish, not old. But they're probably more typical of backpackers not bikers.

Just bought the 20s dual pack today, split with my dad. Its pricy but works well so far.

What kind of design is it? To investigate further, who designed this/produces them?
>>17432474
Perhaps you are thinking narrowly my friend. Direct drive is not the only way to propel a machine.
From a bottom-up perspective, it may be effective to develop engines propelled by hydraulic pressure. So the motor is acting on the liquid, and not effected by changes in outside factors.
I believe a group of students at Harvard did something similar in a hypermileage contest.

Yes, three-phase induction motor.
>>17432538
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squirrel-cage_rotor
Designed by Nick Tesla himself.
>>17432474
Not just AC, three phase induction. They work by creating a rotating magnetic field, which induces a rotating electric field in the rotor. Power is created by the slip-angle between the rotating field of the stator and the rotation of the rotor.

Just one tasty feature of this arrangement is baked-in traction control. When losing traction, the rotor will "catch up" with the rotating field in the stator, but will go no further. You don't get wheelspin, the motor controller continues to control the position of the wheel regardless of load, traction, etc. This is the primary reason the Railroad industry is converting from DC to AC3 drive as fast as they can. Two locomotives can do the job of three, especially on grades and in conditions of poor traction.

>>17432764
No less efficient then chopping the DC for control in your typical PWM scheme. More efficient in many cases as you use fewer silicon switches (IGBTs, etc).

Just turned a 17 minute trip into a two hour trip because no gps and city changed the way it labels highway exits

No matter; I enjoyed riding, went 150 around traffic, saw some new places and finally, the goal of it all, bought pickled ginger and soy sauce at wholesale prices (after phoning two friends to navigate).

In the final stretch, already in home borough, lots of idling due to a cop parking on a bad street and a stall, and battery wouldn't start the bike again. I had a brief pause, thought about life and things, and remembered a youtube video on how to start a bike with a dead battery, put it in 2nd, ran a few steps and presto. I even learned something new today.

I even witnessed a 2man motorcade consisting of a harley ridden by a man with a open face helmet and a moped ridden by a man with full-face racer helmet. Pic related is the only thing I made a photo of.

Thank you for reading my blog

>They work by creating a rotating magnetic field, which induces a rotating electric field in the rotor. Power is created by the slip-angle between the rotating field of the stator and the rotation of the rotor.

Maybe if the motor is hooked up to 3-phase mains directly, otherwise everything driven by a VFD through an inverter or batteries with closed loop control (like all electric vehicles for efficiency reasons) will have practically no slip and unless you reduce power control to the VFD (let off the accelerator) or have a traction control routine, you will still get wheelspin.

forget about test conditions or whatever, it's just riding. if you have been doing as much as you can with your bike (trying to turn in the tightest circles as you can, weaving slalom, slow balance while navigating a set path, sharp turns from stops, figure-8/direction change from tight as possible to as tight as possible, accurate cornering from a set turning point to end point etc), know how to adjust your riding to fix mistakes or try different techniques, and most of all enjoy riding you will be fine

you should always be thinking of something to improve, and know your strengths and weaknesses

i dunno what the examiners will be like but they are looking for competence and safety. just ask what happens if something goes wrong if they don't tell you and fake your confidence and you will be fine. since you have been riding a year you will probably think the test is even too easy

Chances are that 600cc crotch rocket has a better power to weight ratio and is far more dangerous.

On dirt bikes its not a big issue because they generally crash in ya know.. dirt.
it becomes a problem when a bike is sliding down a road at 100+kmh and the tank can be disintegrated in a minute.

Also remember that 90% of dirt bikes are top of the line race bikes, not road bikes.

Even enduros are top of the line race bikes, the only ones that arent are ones like the drz400's and what not and even with them they are still mainly off road machines.

what?
my buddies r6 is very easy to wheelie in 1st if you just open the throttle right up and if you start in the right gear and keep it in the upper rpm it will pull strongly up til about 140, then takes a bit of time getting much past 150-160 but it IS only 600cc after all so top speed is obviously going to be a bit limited

yeah it lugs down at the lower revs, if you start at 4k rpm in 6th gear and try to get to top speed it will feel weak but if you stop being a little bitch and keep the revs up it has a respectable amount of power that could defintely put a new rider in trouble

>MUH TORKS, SUPER TORKS EVERYWHERE
>>
>>17434510
get on a modern 600 4cyl
in first, cruise up to midrange of rpm
open throttle up no backing off or anything
you will wheelie i can guarantee
shit, you don't even need to transition just open the throttle to WOT in low rpm and dont close it and it will wheelie

we are talking about people who aren't expecting or familiar with wheelies right, like fresh riders who have next to no bike experience

i dunno what 600cc you're talking about but the couple (2002 tt600, 2007 r6, 2009 r6, 2004 gsxr 600) i've tried riding all had plenty of power. they are high-revving machines and if you give that to them they do take off pretty fast and i agree its very manageable in low-mid rpm and a new rider could handle the power down low, it's the mid-high rpm power that will put them in trouble when they start getting cocky
>>
>>17434559
Throttle control is literally the easiest part of riding a bike though. If newbies ever crank it, it's while trying to hold the bike up by the handlebars during a low speed/no speed drop.

Throttle control without your hand going numb, however....

>>

Not here they don't

You want to not get your motorcycle license, you bring a sportbike to your MSF course/test combo event

You want to do that and get your license, work on some sick gymkhana skills and make that car-like turning circle vanish

or just ask

>can i have the honda rebel for this?

I've got an Alpinestars GP pro two piece, it's pretty nice and the jacket is just long enough that you can wear it without the pants and not plumbers crack everyone behind you. Plus the zippers match all of alpinestars other stuff so if you want to get vented/mesh/textile whatever you can mix and match. On the downside it's $1100 but you can find previous years versions for a good discount.

A 1200GS may be a big bike but it has a small, easy to handle turning circle. A sport bike or big cruiser cannot turn inside that box unless you're one of those moto gymkhana competition guys

it's not even super comfy, it just has 90s bike ergonomics

it's kind of a "remember the 90s?" bike, from the styling to the ride to the way the engine is tuned

They are. At least the modern ones. The consumer reliability report isn't a meme. It's real.

Lurk around long enough on the GS section of advrider and you'll read all sorts of horror stories, from one off stuff like something coming loose on R1200GS and RnineT and grenading the engine under 10k miles, to systematic problems like the stator, fuel pump, handlebar switches and heated grips on all the F800 series.

On jap bikes you usually have two known issues like cam chain tensioners and rectifiers. On BMWs you have dozens of bad known items.

But don't take my word for it, lurk yourself and you'll see.
>>
>>17435091
thats heavier than the R1200RT
>>
>>17434829
Wow, plenty of Fiat
>>
>>17435133
It's actually 20 kilos lighter, and the R1200 is uniquely set apart by only featuring a tiny oil cooling circuit apart from its air cooling instead of a full water cooling setup, so it's not really comparable.
>>
>>17435055
People with working products generally keep quiet and to themselves. People with broken stuff proclaim it for the world to see and hear.

Nothing wrong with BMW at all, I think its just the consumers like to complain more than on the jap stuff.

I've got no other options, besides do you think scott and Oates were worried about comfort?
>>
>>17435411
Do your best to find a way to strap it down instead. I wore a small backpack on the way out (less than 10 pounds), but strapped it on the way back (see >>17435409). It made a huge different in comfort. Less weight on the shoulders, more airflow over the back.

>>
>>17435664
This. MN switched to zipper merge years ago, and people are still ass hats about it, pulling halfway into the ending lane to stop folks from passing them long before the merge zone. Lane splitting I'm not so hot on myself, but filtering stopped traffic I get. I just think there would be way too many shitbirds here that would cause problems.
>>
Really thinking of getting a V-star 250 for my first bike and changing the rear sprocket to bump the top speed for highway use.

I want a cruiser but I'd be alright with getting an already dinged up dual sport instead to get used to but I'm finding a bunch of <5 year old V Stars for 2k or less

I don't have much of a commute, less than ten minutes to work and I don't mind having to sell the bike to upgrade since similar flavored 500/750cc baikus are pretty much the same price

>>
>>17435769

>>
>>17435769

>>
>>17435769
Why do you need to put your foot down? Even just staying in the friction zone when pulling a u turn should still keep you up just fine.
>>
>>17435784
>Why do you need to put your foot down?

So I don't drop the bike like a moron when I lock and lean
>>
>>17435769
I usually end up keeping the end revved up a bit in second and using the clutch. Looking where to want to go helps so much.

One thing that helped me a lot was going to a mall parking lot after close, just tooling around doing tighter and tighter circles. After a couple nights, and was whipping my cruiser around the lights at 30, scraping pegs the whole way with no problems.
>>
>>17435769
rear brake and feather the clutch. Look where you want to go. Practice helps a lot.
>>
>>17435732
I'm also worried about all the blowhards riding huge Harleys who would end up banging into people's cars all the time making people hate bikers even more.
