i just bought a 2006 drz40sm. i cleaned the carb and replaced the battery and she was running awesome. when i went to take it out it started, idled for a bit and then died. i got it started a couple times after, but now it wont fire up. it is turning over, but i cant figure out why it wont start. any suggestions?

No bike this weekend, feels bad man. It's at the shop getting dyno tuned to richen things up.

Anyone gone on extended rides here? I've got all my debts squared away, I've packed and stored most of my possessions. Turned over the keys to my apartment and am currently couch surfing with a friend. Passport should be arriving soon. Bank account is slowly filling for gas, insurance, food and should keep me going for a little over a year.

Starting to get a little excited, been using google maps to look at all the places I want to see.

You should keep a journal or log or something of what you're up to.
Pictures and videos are fun, but not quite the same. I don't get the same feeling from looking at old photos as I do from finding something personal I handwrote years ago. You can get more of your mental state into writing than a picture, and you can flip through a notebook faster than you can search for a moment in a vlog.

I like that idea. It would give me something to do when I'm taking a break. Currently my route is east until I hit the Canadian east coast, then back to Ontario, then most likely south into America until I reach the border and then west.

Only thing thats kinda got me stumped so far is my windshield. I got an HD quick detach mount for the front which is on the bike now and a windshield for the bike to make highway riding less fatiguing but I'd like to be able to dump the windshield for cities and rural areas. I might fab up a storage rack for it but still kinda sucks to lug around.
>>
>>17274197

Oh and if anyone doubts that the "Harley tax" is a myth, that quick detach sissybar setup there was around $900 CDN.

An aftermarket bolt on would be about $100-150 Canadian. Buying it through HD though you gotta buy the luggage rack separate, the quick detach sideplates, the sissybar itself, the quick detach hardware, the Willie G emblem (It's gone, lol) the backrest pad.. it's all separate part numbers through HD.

while it's not totally applicable to you, I bet you'd be interested - young dude spent a year living out of his van and travelling as a full time sales manager for a family company. I found this imgur album http://imgur.com/gallery/1LTyw but I could have sworn there was a super long one, like 50-100 pictures. I remember one in particular where he hung his hammock from the underside of a bridge over a river, and a one or two with a qt that hooked up with him and traveled along with him for a bit. I know he hiked across the US once, so maybe there's an album from that that I'm remembering from. Anyway, interesting guy. Seems right up your alley re: exploring / freewheeling.

>As the sun started coming down I was walking by a farm when the farmer up on his pouch yelled down something to me on the gravel road I walked up his hill to his house to see what he was saying. The wind was blowing and the rain was coming down hard.

>When I got up to his house he was already in his truck with the engine running, he asked me where I needed to go. I said I don't take ride and told him about what I was doing. He seemed struck by it, almost confused. He said that I'm more than welcome to set up on his barn for the night. I said that sounded amazing. He offered me a ride down, I said I would walk.

>I got down there and it was huge, he had all sorts of hay packed away. I made my self comfortable. Later the farmer came down in his car in the rain and offered me some dinner. He gave me a salad, chicken pot pie, cold beer and water. Thank you.

wonder if people would be as nice if you were BRBRBRBRBRBRB'ing by their farm on a harley lel

It seems to depend on the country. In Austria you have to either take the practical exam again OR take a couple riding lessons on an A bike without another exam. Here in Germany you have to take the practical exam again with riding lessons being optional. Elseswhere you may need additional riding lessons plus another practical exam. But in any case the theoretical stuff completely falls away. I suggest you to google it in your language.

Attention all memers

I'm really unsure if I should get a CBR600F or a Hornet as my first big boy bike.

Engine wise, they should be rather similar, no? only real difference would be the seating position, and I don't know if the CBR would be the most comfortable bike for daily use and canyon carving/light touring

any advise?

From what I understand you need the riding instructor to sign you up for the exam, and most instructors will require at least one lesson to show you can handle a big bike.
I should really just ring them up and make dates for one lesson and the exam 2bh

What the fuck? Is there something I should be checking for? I keep my bike in a garage and there are no leaks anywhere whatsoever.

I'll do that of course, I just hope I won't be biased by how much sportier and cooler the CBR looks
>>

Try putting it in a higher gear when cruising maybe and stop revving it all the way to the red line at every stop..

If I recall correctly the Hornet didn't get EFI until 2007. The F4is got EFI in 2001.

PC35 is EFI, can't remember the Hornet.

That is my F3 yeah. I use it for track and doing generally retarded shit up innamountains

If you can get one in good condition (sadly mine's not) they're pretty good. A bit thirsty and not as powerful as newer bikes, but good regardless. I've actually become rather versed on the old CBRs due to necessity, ask me anything you need.

any advise on aftermarket cans? I heard it's pretty quiet with the stock one
>>
>>17274904
Because your pigfat adventure bike probably has 21 and 18 inch rims, kinda like i run 12/14 psi in my dirt bike tyres.
having your road tyres lower than 35psi is pointless anyway, all that happens is it gives you more low speed grip but way less high speed grip because the tyre deforms easier giving you less room to lean the bike over.

>>17274906
If you do get the PC35 try getting the 2001 and later one which are EFI. The fuel injection isn't as smooth as the carbs but it's fairly more dependable — I found ram air + carbs to be very finicky and a potential clusterfuck if you start modifying components (headers, downpipes, jets and so on). Even little things like a brake hose in the way of the airflow can mess it up.

I run a rather unremarkable made in Spain can for my F3, so I can't recommend a particular brand. You are most likely to be fine with anything you get.

If anything, get a can that you can return in case it messes up the throttle response. If you put a can on, pay close attention how the bike responds across the rev range to different throttle inputs as it can resonate the wrong way (if it's a shit can) causing the bike to lose power. Anyhow, all of this is somewhat unlikely in fuel injected bikes.
>>
>>17274947
so why run higher pressures if your grip comes from lower pressure?

Hey awes/o/me ones, really new biker here, doing my bike licence ATM, I got a question about helmets.

As I was digging into the subject, I found that the words flip-up helmet and modular helmet are used like synonims.

Are they? Doesn't modular really mean like detacheable jaw-section and place for intercom?

They're just called modular, and they're pretty cool but usually dont test as well as a standard full face helmet in safety ratings.

The increasingly complicated and expensive licensing does make it a lot harder to enter biking, and I think that's what they actually tried to achieve with the recent licensing revisions in order to crack down on traffic deaths and noise pollution. On the other hand if people in countries this highly populated were as careless as Americans about their skill and about loud exhausts, there would be more deaths and there would be a certain degree of decline in life quality.

in this case I can only speak for me, but having a bike is not really a viable mean of transport. Yeah, I ride to Uni with it, but what if I want to go camping with my mates, what if I need to shop for groceries for my family, what if I want to take a girl out on a date? A motorbike is fun and practical if it is about transporting you and a bit of luggage around, and the rest of the time, it's a toy.

Honestly, I'm very okay with the licensing system in Germany/Europe. I was once on vacation in the US, and 100% of people honestly didn't know how to drive. I still don't trust anyone here on our streets, but at least I have a bit confidence that it is by far not as bad as in big american citizens

Also,

is it smart to max out a 17 year old bike to see how much power it lost?

at 16 you can do your 125 license, at 18 the A2 where you can indeed ride up to 35 kW bikes, and then after two years, you used to get your full license, now you have to do another riding test. or you can do your full license when you're 24. I think that's actually rather sensible, because it encourages people to learn on smaller and less powerful bikes and then, after some time spent learning, you get to ride a bike for the big boys

I did a quick search online to see if anyone had done a direct comparison on an engine dyno of an old engine v a new identical engine to see how much power gets lost over the years. Couldn't find anything relevant.

Those poorly designed shits cause traffic to back up onto the highway. They're almost as bad as on-ramps with speed limits.

Problematic bike is a BMW F800R (and I was trying to sell it, lel) it seems my fuel pump just got rekt.

This. Hold by the plastic spark plug wire boot, obviously.

Never AssUme when troubleshooting. Know so you can isolate problems.

Verify fuel flow to carb by disconnecting the fuel line at the carb and briefly opening the fuel valve to observe flow. Do the AFTER the spark check in case of fuel spillage.

Shiet, are you the guy who asked about advice on cans above?

My BMW definitely has to go — it's nowhere as shade-tree mechanic friendly as the jap bikes are. It isn't hard to work on per se, but the service manual isn't nowhere as close as the Honda/Yamaha ones and parts are ridiculously expensive.

2bh the FZ6 is super bland. The FZ1 has that literpeter appeal though. It's 150 horses man. Also comfier ergos than the F4i. Also, I like how it looks.

F4i on the other hand is a sportsbike (I like them), is cheaper, there are parts everywhere and I know Honda's fairly welll.

Oh, decisions.

Depends on what happened to it during those years because mileage and periodic maintenance have greatest effect on condition.

The only wear that matters in HP output terms is top end wear which you can check using a leakdown or compression tester to see if within factory specs.

"Completely rebuilt" tells me you aren't a mechanic. If for example bottom end condition is within spec then it's not a problem nor does it reduce performance. Valve seat and piston ring/cylinder bore wear DO reduce performance because they reduce compression. You can measure compression loss easily.

Motorcycles don't magically go bad. Everything machines do is testable so test if curious.

I think the FZ6N looks pretty cool, but from what I read, it's not really that good of a bike. I really have to get something under 110 hp because otherwise, I'll get even more fucked by the insurance.

Have you looked at the other rivals of the FZ6, i.e. the GSR600 or (as i mentioned before) the Hornet PC41?

Former multibrand used car lot mechanic here and there's good reason German cars don't go for much at Copart auctions. They age terribly and parts are heinously expensive. They don't do anything particularly well but some of them are pretty. We usually flogged the few we ended up with (sometimes we bought in bulk and had to take a few) to dindus who thought they were "classy", similar to their hilarious infatuation with Chrysler. BTW in Germany Mercedes is nothing special and is basically the equivalent of GM.

Good news, they make crash cages for people like you (and stunt riders and adventures riders mainly). Riding a trike doesn't compare to riding a motorcycle at all from the lack of leaning alone. Riding a trike is more like saddling a car with a motorcycle fork for steering. Worse than a car at being car-like, worse than a bike at being bike-like.
>>
>>17276435 see
>>17276443

You don't need balance, the machine balances itself over 5mph, you have to use a combination of counter-steering and shifting bodyweight to get the bike to turn.

If you have to have a trike get a can-am as your typical Boomer harley trikes are more unstable.

European countries mandate driving school lessons but let you drive freely as soon as you have your license. Other countries don't mandate driving school lessons but make you drive under supervision for a certain amount of time as a replacement for driving school (it's not a replacement for driving school considering how awfully Australians drive).

honestly, when I'm approaching a red light or when I know just how much I want to slow down, I downshift and let the engine do the braking

braking hard with the clutch not pulled can upset the motorcycle's balance, or, when you have to come to a dead stop, the engine will try to counteract the braking at a certain point, and that can get dangerous as well

you have to be in the clear that without pulling the clutch, the gears in your gearbox will clank together at (if not done correctly) uneven speeds. This will wear the gears a lot more than usual, especially if you don't 100% know what you're doing
>>
>>17276718
fuck off fattie, just get a Ford F150 or whatever car the likes of you drive
>>
>>17276729
So always clutch. How important is matching RPM?

Since Im a newb I sometimes have too many rpm or too little rpm when changing gear,
>>
>>17276713
Let me spell out some basics that I just learned:

>Quick shifter vs Clutchless upshifting
>quick shifter works by having the trottle open, and it kills the throttle for a split second while shifting.
>clutchless upshifting can be done with the same exact theory, by killing the throttle for a split second while shifting up

>clutchless downshifting
>some bikes are equipped with an auto-blipper which blips the throttle to match engine speed to transmission speed while you shift
>this same theory can be applied without a bike that is equipped with an auto-blipper

This may cause premature wear, but some bikes are built for that kind of stuff
>>
>>17276737
>How important is matching RPM?
in case you don't have 90 NM of torque plucking at your shaft, letting the clutch slip while changing higher gears occasionally isn't too bad, you'll get the hang of it soon
>>
>>17276743
it kills the ignition, not the throttle, that'S why a quickshifter will always be smoother than clutchless
>>
>>17276713
Downshifting is not recommended, unless you perfectly match rpms, which is difficult without the clutch, it can cause premature wear. Upshifting on the other hand is completely fine, causes no more wear with the clutch or without it.
>>
>>17276759

I think this answers a problem I always had with stop and go...
I pull the clutch in and ride the momentum out with casual breaking as needed. Shifting down as I slow down without releasing the clutch. However when the light turns green, I let go of the clutch and give it some gas and I tend to be in the wrong gear.

So should I be periodically letting go of the clutch as I downshift? I feel like that's more complicated since I can't just let go of the throttle and ride the momentum if I have to keep reconnecting.

Anything dangerous with just keeping the clutch in as I break? (Other than reattaching at the wrong gear)

Dude, your only problem sounds like your judgement when trying to work out the gear. Just remember the speed you were going at which gear and make a mental note of which gear you should be in as you slow down. Simple.
>>
>>17276779
again, it depends on how hard you have to break, maybe I can find a webm of mine where I can show what I mean.

Downshifting as you go however is very much useful, because it's a fucking bitch and a half to shift a standing motorbike from 4th to 1st

Oh man this is great, why the fuck did I think lifting up my foot and stomping on it was acceptable?

Too bad I can't seem to get the brake any lower, it's just barely reasonable to brake without having to take my heel off the peg but still slightly awkward.

thanks anon... really helpful. Seems like the one weird thing I do different is not letting go of the clutch until I'm ready to move forward

>clutchless shifting is not really useful in everyday riding, who told you about it?

This is more of my own thing - since I pull the clutch in to slow down, I figured the rpms will slow down and I should downshift trying to match them to the right gear when I let go of the clutch

>>17277069
I'd assumed the previous owner had already done the reg/rec replacement as it had a large aluminium backing plate added, but I guess they must just have slapped the plate onto a stock reg/rec. Got an upbuilt one to replace it with, and for belt&braces a fancy-pants IP67 Noctua industrial fan to slap on it and provide active airflow. Just need to wait until Tuesday for the parts to arrive (FSCKing back-holiday weekend) and lug the toolkit to the underground carpark at work it's stuck in. Fuck trying to wheel it up 3 stories of steep ramps, or attempting a push-start dodging between the fucking lambos and shit parked there.
>>
>>17277065
It's a complete blast™ to ride. All that weight down low and the super short wheelbase makes her corner like a beast! Although with all that torque and that short ass wheelbase the front end gets a little "floaty" if you get on that throttle like a rice Rocketeer.

If there's a faster vehicle behind me I'll usually keep to the right side of my lane on straights so they have better visibility of oncoming traffic. I don't expect them to pass every time. I'm just trying to be nice and make it a little easier for them to see when it's clear in case they do want to.

Shit...I don't pull in the clutch when braking unless I want to drop speed quickly or emergency stop.

My method:
>ease off throttle
>2 fingers on front brake, 2 fingers on throttle
>use engine braking + apply brakes gradually
>simultaneously clutch in, blip throttle + downshift, clutch out

If I constantly hold in the clutch while braking and downshift, my gears usually clunk so I just use the method above. It's all muscle memory now.

I've never ridden anything other than my single cyl dual sport but I hear certain engines have less engine braking...I love the feeling of my bike's engine braking, it feels pretty strong. Makes twisties so fun with the RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE to slow down before going into a turn.
