Hey guys. With all the night driving I do, I'm always scared of deer. Is it worth running my winch cable from the front of my bumper and connecting it somewhere in the bed of my trucc and tightening it up in order to possibly deflect a deer that may come through my windshield? Or is that just too autistic and wouldn't work?

I've been thinking of welding two metal bars in front of my windshield so that my wipers can still work but would protect against deer just in case. But that would also seem heavily autistic.

Working tonight...
Finishing up a couple of tasks on the project car, then rest of the weekend innawoods. Should be fun!
>>
>>17271379
Generally the kind of off road driving that requires 4x4 and larger tires is going to be harsh on the drivetrain and suspension. Sedans and wagons just are not built to withstand that kind of abuse. Trucks and SUVs on the other hand, often are built in a way that holds up well to that kind of abuse.

I would not recommend using a Subaru for such things to begin with. But if you insist, I would highly recommend you only do so if you have a second vehicle to drive because you WILL break things. So if you're going to buy another vehicle anyway, you're best off using that one for fun and keeping the Subaru for a DD.

unfortunately the 3.0 but I did the ignition coil, wires, plugs, cleaned the MAF and added new air intake filter.

It has the dana 35 upfront, and its a ttb.

Went wheeling and to my friends surprise it was extremely capable. Went down a couple of atv, dirt bike trails by accident and it did great + some climbs.

I need to get a 8.8 rear with the LSD though

Also it has no A/C like it didn't come with it as a feature but I have seen threads about making the A/C compressor into a on board air compressor so I am probably gonna do that in the future.

I also have a visor pic related that came with it. It was broken in 3 places where it joins the roof but I fixed it and painted it. It's pretty nice imo and like I said I can't find the exact one anywhere online but if someone could that would be cool. I am gonna mount it and put a 52 curved LED bar underneath it. I think that would fit it the best.

I detailed it before the picture lol, it's awesome and its a 5 speed>>17272077

I bought a "roll bar" that goes in the bed for 50 and painted it. It's came out nice but I am deciding what I want to do meaning: do I mount the bars or the cap ?

It would look good either way but for wheeling/outdoor/fishing/cargo transport purposes I think the cap would be more beneficial as I can keep more stuff and keep it dry.
>>
>>17272099
alternatively:
>having to clean four inches of mud cake

>>17272132
Dana 35 is nice capable and has pretty good flex. I take Taynger (2010, 4.0, torsions +3 inchs) racing dirt bikes occasionally. She even fits through little ATV tree tunnels quite well and at good speeds. Manual hubs is nice, too.

You do not need the 8.8 with LSD. Coming from a guy with 8.8 opens.

You can rig up an A/C system through your back window for cheaper and wire that into your battery.
>>
>>17272175
idk the 8.8 with the LSD is an easy swap and it has the 4.10 gears which I want for this so I can put on 33s/34s but then I have to put them in the front too so at that point I should just put in 4.56s instead of the 4.10s

>>17272193
That's your call to make. If you get the 4.56s, you'll go up tyre size and down gear size so could be worth that.

I also say that you don't need 8.8 LSDs if yours is capable enough. Save your money for a front swap instead (which will be much harder, of course) and a few other accessory items. Front can fit 33s but you'll get a shitload of rubbing. Lift on TTBs may not be worth it if you can just use the money for the solid swap.

>>17272159
I routinely switch between the cap for sleeping / playing, gullwing toolbox for work, and open bed for deliveries. You could benefit from the bar but as long as you're not driving high speeds and flexing, the cap would be much more useful.

IF you do, make sure to get a rubber or plastic seal around the bed's walls in order to actually "keep things dry".

>I need an LSD famalamalam.
why, famalamadingdongbodiggityshiggitybopboodop?

If you're going to do a swap, why not put something with rear E lockers in them already? Also, I've found that LSD is more difficult to deal with slipping hill climbs. Better for on the road but open has been better for off road (at least for me) manual hill climbs. Free spinning on an LSD may have made that clay worse. Get bigger, thicker, and better tyres and you should be able to fix it.

Also I see those KO2s on that Rangy. Have them on my Land Cruiser. I'd recommend Duratrac simply because of comfy. And plus it can match your Duratec engine, heh.

Remember the different levels of recovery:
>2wd until you can't
>4wd-l
>activate lockers
>traction aid or shovel and 2nd gear
>airing down to 10psi
>winch

The stock defender is 4500lbs. Mudding is meh.

Rock climbing, overlanding, and hill climbs / descending is a yes. Especially overlanding since this thing pulls off the "cube" design for maximum space efficiency without being autistic like the Scion or Nissan.

Sure, the old Defenders are great. But gas mileage (and therefore range) and highway and daily efficacy is pretty difficult to back up. So they never made them for the US/Canada market for that raisin.

Parts of my mirror housing, a grille and a few wheels

Clean whatever you're dipping properly with citrus cleaner, surface cleaner or whatever.

Apply a thin, complete layer
Add another layer when first one is relatively dry, but thicker
Add another, same procedure and thickness
Repeat
Repeat

I recommend atleast three layers to get it more solid. Be careful with degreaser and other washing solutions for the first week

I'm tempted to plasti-dip the whole thing. I hate the color of my Jeep (silver) but painting it would be so expensive and way too permanent, especially for an off-road vehicle thats bound to get scratched anyway. A friend recommended plastidip and I had never considered it.

Still feels kind of extreme but I've seen people do it to their whole paint job and it looks amazing on a Wrangler if done well.
>>
>>17281143
What about those car wraps. I dont think its that expensive. That shit that heat shirks around the whole car. People use it for advertising and such. Probably alot more durable than plastidip.

I believe it's more long-lasting but also more expensive and harder to spot-repair any scratches in it. I'm open to that too, though.

Sorry mate, but a vehicle renown for not only lunching gearboxes, but also requiring complete interior removal and and engine crane for swapping a gearbox does not make for a good offroader in my eyes.
Combined with 10/24 spline axles, axle housing tubes that fall out of the diff pumpkin with little force and underwhelming aenamic engines (gimme a 200/300TDi though) there's not really any redeeming features. A Landcruiser is better in almost every literal objective measure. Hell, with the exception of omitting a diesel option the Rubicon Unlimited is a better option.

6.5
While there's not really much to be gained over the Nissan TD42, the GM diesel is often used to change out bricked ZD30 and RD28 powered Patrols. Commonly chucked in non turbo diesel Landcruisers too.
>>
>>17283196
Intresting. I thought the 6.5 was shit though? I always see them shoved into non running craigslist adds.
>>
>>17283222
Depends what you mean by "shit". By IDI mechanical injected 2 valve diesel standards they're still perfectly competent motor. And although they lack the support of say the 12V Cummins brigade, they have the advantage of packaging size and weight, which makes them a popular choice for non factory engine conversions.
If you compare them to modern common rail 4 valve offerings they look sub par, but then so do the Ford and Cummins engines of the time too.
>>
>>17283222
The 6.5s 'were shit' because they were built for fuel efficiency, not performance. They make sub-par power for their age and size, but they're still fantastic motors for what they were built for, which is moving around a large vehicle that's not towing, and getting excellent fuel economy in the process. Stick them into a lighter chassis and they feel sportier because muh power/weight.
>>
>>17283222
A good percentage of them have a casting defect on cylinder 7. It's essentially unrepairable if that defect cracks, but the blocks are like $150 at a junk yard, so who gives a fuck?
>>
What do yall do for power when camping?

I usually go rent a camper close to where I'm going to camp, and I use some piece of shit generator thats loud as fuck and pisses everyone off.

I'm thinking about getting a small diesel out of a car and attaching it to the generator unit with reduction so it can sit at 1500rpm, and just stick a million mufflers on it.
Ideally I want to run it all night long without disturbing others so I can run the A/C.

Seriously, get a Honda copy 1-2KVA inverter generator. Don't fuck around with diesel gensets unless you need upwards of 10KVA.
Me personally, I run a dual battery with a 120 amp hour deep cycle battery as the auxiliary. Keeps my 110L Waeco running as a fridge for 3 days straight in 80 degree days. If I'm not moving for a week I'll start and idle for half an hour each day.
Just get an automatic isolator solenoid that connects both batteries once your main battery reaches a pre set voltage.

The tires, gearing and way you drive make a huge difference.
I run 33x10.5 tires with 4.88 gearing.
Go to a 33 x 12.5, or 35 x 12.5 & mpg will suffer.
Some will say the 4.88 is too deep for 33s but they are wrong. It's perfect.
At 2800 rpm I'm running about 75-78 mph on the highway. I try to drive smooth and stay below 3000 rpm unless I need to.
Distances are big in the West and I make frequent long highway hauls between wheeling adventures.
20 gallon tank and I reset trip indicator on fill up. I typically get 300 miles before re-fueling. Lots of off-roading and that drops to 280 or less. Easy driving can raise it to 320.
I always carry fuel if wheeling.

Rust mostly, pretty sure they're made from deactivated rust instead of steal, add a drop of water and boom rust. The major downfalls are comfort, fit and finish, they ride like a utilitarian vehicle. They're just not "nice" vehicles. They're capable, with bulletproof engines, and the aftermarket is MASSIVE. Oh and they're dirt cheap and easy to work on. Those are the reasons people love them.

Mine has a lot of rust (eastern canada); I'm new to "doing it right" so my current plan is to go down to the US, get all new doors from a junk yard for $75-100 a piece and swap 11am and come back up and repaint the whole thing. Not gonna bother swapping the rockers, just gonna fab some rock sliders out of tubing and attach directly to the frame in lieu of rockers.

I am so so worried about my frame, I know it's in great shape but I have to lift it up asap so I can clean the small amounts of rust appearing and paint the shit out of it.

My rear leafs are beyond shot, actually inverted, so instead of the junkyard lift I was gonna put together I may as well get a lift kit with all new parts and treat her right
>>
>>17285780
You need to look into which transfer cases came on the XJ and make sure you are getting a locking transfer case. Without it you are basically faux-4wd and will never climb a hill or pass through a mud or sand pit. It's possible XJ all have locking xfer case, idk, I have a ZJ

If you plan to lift it and enhance offroad capability you can plan on replacing pretty much all suspension components. Springs & shocks, control arms, track bars, sway bar end links w/ quick disconnect (or remove sway bars completely, leave them off)

With a locking xfer case they are already extremely capable in stock suspension form though

Just like any car at 25 years old and 125k miles you can plan on replacing quite a lot of accessory related components... belts, pulleys, alternator, ignition stuff, etc.

The 4.0 itself is pretty much bulletproof, but rev it out when you test drive it just to make sure it isn't fucked

Rear on 33s fit in easily. No leaf addition needed. Front will benefit from two or three inches of lift by bending the TTBs a bit higher. Thank god you don't have the torsions. I've got front springs off a WJ with the upcountry package for the rear, and I found some aftermarket lift springs out of an XJ for the front.
In total, I'm expecting 4-5 inches depending if I can get the factory spacers in. Going custom lower control arms in the front, and I have not engineered the rear yet, but definitely custom lowers and maybe uppers as well.

I'm also going to get a D35 High pinion out of an XJ with 4.10s as well to try and help pinion angle so I hopefully don't have to turn the mounting brackets and knuckles. Otherwise, that's a direct fit I believe. Gotta pay ~$700 though for some chromo shafts eventually.

Yes...>Because I can just tough it so long as it's creature comfort
Really? What are you gonna do when it -30C? Cause that's aweful cold...and you need that heat to defrost the windows, so you can see where your driving...
>>
>>17288772
It also leaks coolant into the cab, which gets vaporized and you breath it, and also rusts through the floor pan. Guess you could bypass it, but no defroster on chilly days even in places like Florida. Or rainy days.

>>17288790
That's fine for the cold, but doesn't stop the above. Also risking low coolant on already brittle heads. And for the record, the heat worked fine, but was rotting my floor pan, poisoning me, and don't get me started on hot rainy days.

Yeah, there's really no way around it. It's not as bad as you'd think, especially because most of the screws are the same. The real bitch is getting the HVAC box unbolted. All in all the only thing I fucked up was one vacuum actuator line that I let slip inside the box while putting it back together. Couple minute panic then took it back apart got the piece and used heat shrink tube to fix it. Mind you this was all on the bench before any major reassembly.

What no. that's a first generation. It has a manual and prelifted so it's worth the $5k simply because of the heightened resale value and rarity and prelifted. Plus the guy seems to know what he's talking about.

A bronco or k5 in a similar condition (very good and rock guarded, lifted, and maintained) would be an okay deal for this price.
>>
>>17292061
Are these really worth the prices can I get anything similar for cheeper all the first gen 4runners in my area don't go under 4k and if they do they have a "easy fix problem no big deal"
>>
>>17292130
There is a tax for a reason and it's up to you to decide on its worth. If you have the money, then get it to join the club of TayYoda circlejerkers in your area.
>>
>>17292130
They aren't worth it, Toyota owners are insufferable faggots, although in their defense they're probably a step above JK owners. Buy a K5 or older Bronco to get a capable 4wd with solid axles, V8 and large aftermarket.
>>
>>17292130
Also K5s and older broncos have the removable tops just like first Gen 4runners if that's your thing. 4" lift and 35" tires will fit well on both. Plus most come with 35" tires and lifts already installed.
>>
>>17292285

>>
>>17292341

>>
>>17292367
And yes I am biased, biased towards buying superior vehicles for less money than the overpriced Toyota shit.

Once big tires and a lift are added to any vehicle the fuel mileage suffers. The bigger V-8 engines really come into their own then since they have the power to turn the larger tires without being revved to the moon

Up North innawoods trails report:

So..... I always thought limb risers were in the same category as Snorkels... more show than anything else. Well, I was wrong. Driving down a trail at 15mph and a tree branch smacks my windshield with just enough force to crack it. REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

The same limb tore off my magnet mount CB antenna and nearly took out one of my rear windows. I may need to replace it with a hardwired antenna...

Also the tree limbs got one of my Hellas. It nearly tore the reflector housing clear out. It was the good one of the pair too :-\ Replacement lights may be in order soon.

assume the 4l60 is approaching the grave.
5.7 vortec is better than the old TBI and quadrajet 350s for power, but is about as efficient. Might as well enjoy your 8-11 mpg after you put big tires on it by having the BBC and the 4l80.
You might get lucky and find a good early one with a manual TC, or one of the later ones that didn't choose the option of the electric TC. It's not a huge deal if the one you want has the pushbutton, but if the old owners used Auto 4wd a lot or were going back and forth between 2hi and 4hi a lot and didn't keep up with maintenance, it can be weak point. The TC could be worn out or the electronic front actuator could be spotty. If you need to replace the TC or you find a good one, treat it right. Auto 4 should only be for dry road with potential black ice (necessary in the GMT400 because it doesn't have traction control like later trucks); 4hi on mud, rocks, sand, general 4x4 stuff; 4lo while river crossing and rock crawling. If the front actuator is fudging up, http://4x4posi-lok.com/app_chevy-k.html, a physical replacement exists.

As with all torsion bar vehicles, if the front end was neglected and run with bald tires with knots showing on the inside for thousands of miles, you might need to replace a bunch of shit to fix it, not just an alignment and new tires.

To add to this anon's response:
Expect 13-15mpg in town and 16-18 on the highway with a 350. If it's doing worse than that with a 30-33" tire and you're not beating the piss out of it, then something is wrong.
The 96+ Vortec 454 in the 2500s has some extra HP and a metric fuckton of torque, but economy is going to drop off by 2-3mpg.

There are three transfer cases available in these trucks.
NP241 is the manual 4x4.
NP243 is the push button 4x4, essentially just an electronically shifted 241.
NP246 is the push button Autotrac AWD/Auto4x4 case. This one is identified by it's four buttons instead of three.

Expect to change the starter and fuel pump while you own it. Neither is expensive or difficult, but both will likely need replacement soon if they're still original at 150k+ miles and 20+ years old.

As for the diesel, it depends on the year. Anything you can do to help cooling will extend the lifespan of the engine. It's not a 5.9 or 7.3, so you're not likely to make it to a million miles but 500k should be fairly easy to attain if you fix the factory mistakes.
HO water pump, Duramax clutch fan, and Hayden severe duty fan clutch take care of cooling issues. Make sure the coolant is clean and the radiator isn't clogged up.
If it's a 94+ the biggest thing you have to worry about is the PMD. Just go ahead and buy one of the relocation kits with a lifetime warranty. I think Leroy Diesel sells one.
Not a factory mistake, but preventative maintenance here. Make sure you check the crank pulley. It's rubber dampened so if the rubber starts to dry rot and crack, it can lead to issues. If left unchecked for too long, cracked/separated rubber can lead to crank failure. If you're buying a good quality replacement you should not need to replace it more than twice throughout the lifetime of the truck.
