To start off, I am getting rid of my Lamin-x type "golden yellow" film and spraying on some Krylon stained glass yellow to make a superior selective yellow lamp. I got tired of the GT look in bright sun, it doesn't mesh well with ambers black pearl metallic paint.

Pics related use Krylon, it looks very deep and consistent.

My check engine light turned off a few days ago and hasn't come back on.

But that's because I pulled the bulb loose. I don't know how my mechanic broke my oxygen sims by running the obdii scanner but he managed to. I finally got sick of it.

Next I'll pull my ASC light.

on my 540, finished valve cover gasket + upper timing cover gasket + vanos solenoid gaskets job last weekend. Much more annoying than i thought it would be but a good practice run for the timing chain guides. FUCK this 32mm axle nut from advance auto, its way too big and makes the vanos solenoids impossible to screw back in. just drop the $30 on the bmw special tool super thin wall socket

my zionsville fan shroud + aluminum coolant expansion tank arrives on wednesday, along with an 88c thermostat which will make the car run at least 10C cooler on average which is great.

>also PSA to e39 fags, the aux electrical fan is more than powerful enough to cool the car on its own, ditch the shitty mechanical fan its a waste of engine bay space
>>
>>17246997
They worked for many months since install and all I had done was a belt/pulley, giubo, and severed header stud replaced.

He ran the scanner shortly before I picked it up and then the CEL came on for those sensors, he cleared it and it came back on again immediately.

I am assuming it reset something and now I need to put the cats back on for a bit and then switch it back out again. But I really don't want to bother swapping it and risking severing more of those old studs for a light.

I see him at Cars and Coffee each weekend so maybe I'll ask if he thinks that will work.

So I'm taking my E30 to the track in early june and I'm doing all the prepwork now.
So far I've done; oil/filter, clean ICV, adjust throttle cable, brake fluid, new tie rods and alignment. Got brakes and a new shift knob+adapter (oem inner clip has given up on life) coming in today. Tires are already here just waiting for my friend to mount them for me.

And I was thinking since I have the comfort seats, maybe I should try and upgrade to something else. I can hold myself in place fairly well in my autox like that. Can't really afford to drop $300+ on decent 'racing' seats. Any cheaper good seats with bolstering I can find at a junkyard, or maybe used for super cheap?
I have a welder and spare metal so i could prob make a bracket

Well at least we see now why you have a horse in this imaginary race. Mileage is mostly meaningless, a 30 year old car that has only had 1k miles a year on it is going to have it's own set of issues. The first red one was clean but 24k is ridiculous, the very similar example that's up for another few hours will sell for half.

>225 on 8.5 & 245 on 9 isn't really stretched lol
First of all, 225 tires are not necessarily 225mm wide, it depends on the manufacturer. Secondly, yes they're fucking stretched you retard, because they are VISIBLY stretched
>>
who cares if they are stretch a little it's obviously just a street car.
>>
>>17253945
>what shift knob do you guys like to use?

Stock or tall weighted plastic/wood. Dildo shifters are for vape sucking faggots, metal shift knobs are retard-tier for summer driven cars.

>also E30 guys; how much of a difference does a DSSR make?
ZERO difference. The stock linkage on an E30 is plenty stiff and should NEVER be under enough torsion to deflect it noticeably unless you're side-loading it while in gear.

If your bushings are all replaced and you still have shifter slop, I have bad news; It's the transmission. The getrag 2XX series transmissions are notorious for internal shift mechanism slop. If you have one on the ground with no shift mechanism you can demonstrate this by putting it in gear and seeing that you can still rotate the internal shift rod a little bit with a screwdriver. This tiny movement translates over the arm of the linkage to easily a half-inch or so in either direction with a stock height shifter.

It feels pretty good to be honest. would like to get the condor one at some point. it think it's on a z3 short shifter

The trans feels pretty precise most of the time, and I was kinda trying to think of what mod next and was leaning towards motor+trans mounts from garagistics, but everyone on e30 forums claiming dssr is gud.
I'm hoping my g260 will last until I can afford the m50/52 swap and get a newer bmw trans.

Lifetime fluid is a couple of years or roughly the warranty of the car. It lasts beyond the warranty of course but it's by no means lifetime.

Is owning a BMW truly a meme?

All tell me theyre expensive as fuck and the parts are not available everywhere etc....

But all I see are shit cars and BMW has top tier aesthetics, middle high quality and by far the best most aesthetic interiors.

Not to mention there are quite a few E30 M3s for sale where I live.

Should I?

I'td be my first car (the first that I own) and I dont want it to be a shitbox

Also there's this bad boy

E34 is what you want. It's considered the most reliable BMW of all time plus it was pretty special in many ways.

>the last BMW to have the M30 engine
>the last BMW with the exposed twin headlights

E34 was my first car. They are built like fucking tanks, mine was treated like shit and was still going strong with 230,000 miles on it.

Sold it to get into a quicker, manual car but shit was extremly cash.

Also they're comfy as fuck and the girls like it, if you're the sort of faggot into girls.

Here's the thing, your G260 will last forever with shifter slop, it just isn't going to have a tight shifter. The people talking about how great their DSSR:
>installed it when they replaced all the wear parts so experienced a real difference
or
>are experiencing placebo feels because they spent over $100 on a pointless part

>M50/52 swap
Why not turbo the M20? M50 swap is stupid, you gain just a bit of power and some weight. With a turbo M20 you can get up to 3x stock power with a stock engine. All you need to do to the engine itself is o-ring/MLS and studs. Supporting mods such as clutch, fuel system, nonwithstanding.
>>
>>17259342
>>17259971

what do parts advisors do?

I had an interview last year at my local mini dealership for a "BMW/Mini Genius" position.

It's just some meme job that exists to sell more useless features to customers.

Sadly i couldn't take it because the times they were offering didn't match with my shit in college.

Been thinking about getting an E39 540i as my first car. Do they really feel as quick as people say they are?
>>
>>17264003
Auto or manual? Doesn't matter, it's going to be plenty fast for a first car, even the 740 managed to do 0-100km/h in a comfortable 7 or so second, while weighing in at almost 2 tonnes.
>>
>guy down the street has a E32 740i on apex arc 8 wheels

pretty cool
>>
>>17264086
Auto with 227,000 KM. How big is the difference between manual and auto?
>>
>>17264108
I think the 540 has the 5HP30 transmission, same one used in the 740 and even 750 E38. It's quite comfy to drive and shifts really nicely, I don't have anything to complain about the transmission itself, aside for it being a fucking huge ass lump of iron.
Manual is always going to give you a more "sporty" feel but I don't think that is a big priority in a 5 series. The car should also have Sport mode for the transmission which lets the engine rev a bit higher and give a more sporty ride.

Anyway, you'll still be doing 0-100 in about 7 or so seconds, be it auto or manual.
>>
>>17264002
You're right. Plus my mind keeps going back to them since my 335 had them too.

Nah. The hardest part of turbocharging an M20 is taking the oil pan off if you use a kit. The hardest part if you fabricate yourself and buy a header is routing IC piping.

Aluminum M52s are substantially harder to find than the meh-tier iron M50, and at least twice the price.

go on FCP euro and add to the cart all cooling hoses, water pump , thermostat and any general maintenance items you can find.
You will need to do this as soon as you get the car.
Then have a look at how much a radiator is.
You need at least that in savings just in case.
Then factor in a filter, oil and coolant change once a year.

Thats how much it costs to run.
any e36 except the euro m3 are pretty cheap to service and run.

This is assuming you can do everything yourself

Silver with blue cloth/black leather. Run of the mill m spec. Pretty boring spec when I think about but it's been looked after.
I almost pulled the pin on what I'm sure was a techno violet one but it had been sitting for a while, been crashed and was too expensive.
>>
>>17268028
They are Bolts hyper yellows, but the lamps are so yellow now that they don't make a difference so I won't be bothering getting them anymore. Plus I find that they are keen to break. Cost $15 for a pair.

If you use Lamin-x they might show up slightly more yellow than clears. But it will honestly be a slim difference.

>>17268179
If you take care of it the parts won't always break. Biggest common issue for me has probably been oil leaks.

the 323 is really under tuned and takes alot of work to uncork. It would probably be cheaper to buy a 4 cyl car and swap the m50 or m52b28 later then it would be to uncork the 323

Yeah but I originally went in for a simple thermostat replacement and ended up leaving with spark plugs replaced, crankcase replaced, control arm bushings replaced, trans pan and sleev repaired, v belts replaced, and a bunch of other costly shit. I had more damage coming out than going in.

Funny thing is that before going to this guy I had the dealer inspect it and they said only the thermostat was going bad and the car was in overall good shape. I feel like this guy is fucking with me to squeeze as much money out of me before I catch on
>>

you either got fucked when you bought the car because 'muh low mileage'', got fucked by the mechanic because you don't know what your doing, or got fucked by the dealership because you probably couldnt afford all the repairs.

Need to learn to work on and assess the car yourself man. deal with the fact that its hard to take apart or sell it.

Loving my e60 so far. Just passed 4 months of ownership.

I do need to put some money into actually fixing the exterior though. Has quite a few scratches and chips around the body but every body shop I take it to tries to fuck me on price. Really wish I didn't live in an apartment so I could properly care for it myself.

It's just cause of the silver, you can't really see any of the blemishes in pictures unless it's up close. The only owner before me cared a good deal for the car but he didn't do any maintenance on the exterior it seems. I want to get it touched up and clay barred and everything but I got quoted like $1800 for everything which seems crazy to me. I'd rather spend a day or two filling any scratches myself for that money.

I don't mind the front plate so much but when I see /o/thers' pictures without the front plate, I envy them.

How can you tell if a car has been flooded?

My mom recently bought a used bmw from a gravel car lot and already off the bat I'm seeing problems. Well for first, there's two distinct water lines in the back floorwells but none in the front or anywhere else. The headlights and tail lights have been replaced. And all of the floor mats look like they have been rotted out, especially the undersides, except for one. The leather seats are all rock hard and will tear if you apply pressure. And then of course obivous driving issues that a woman doesn't pay attention to.

All the plastic fixings on the interior are in decent shape but the exterior is fucked.

Oh and, this dealer she bought it from is shady as fuck. All of his cars are ~10 year old imports and consistently priced well below market value. When she first bought the car I tried looking up the reviews for the places and there were none, anywhere. Today I randomly thought about it and looked them up and all the reviews are 1 star ratings citing fraud, such as fake carfaxes, milage rollbacks, and not disclosing accidents from within the past week.

In addition to that, how can you tell if a car's milage has been rolled back because I suspect foul play here too.

How high up do BMW clutches normally bite? I've got a E36 318 and the clutch was replaced by the previous owner about 20k miles ago. When releasing the clutch there's a really light bite halfway up, but the clutch only really starts to bite on the last tenth of the travel.

Did you turn the crank by hand or with the starter motor? If it's by hand you should be ok, but you can't keep turning it forward, a piston is hitting the valve. If you turned it with the starter you need to take the cam covers off at the very minimum and look for bent valves

They have the E30 rear suspension, so some E30 handling characteristics like lift-off oversteer. They're also light (for an E36) and the quirky looks attract some (not me).

Engine swap is coming soon although one of them already is. More so than just autocross these things are super kick ass in the canyons which is where I like to drive/race the most. Also you cant beat the 30+MPG, even if its lacking a bit of power.

>>17279849
What>>17279999 said. Although the looks tend to grow on you as you own it. They are butt ugly stock but when done up right they can start to look good. All E36s/Z3 have the same wheel base. Just the compacts/z3 have a different rear suspension which gives lift off oversteer (very useful in canyon runs) and they weigh 500-700 pounds less than the E36 coupe and E36 Sedan with a full interior. Completely stripped I think they weight about 2300 pounds or so.
>>
>>17280232
How the fuck do you get over 30mpg with this bitch? Best I've ever gotten is 28 and that was pure highway driving

And, the looks definitely grow on you as you own it. I love this piece of shit. Just lowered it recently (pic unrelated), and the extra stiffness in the rear really makes this thing rear end happy, its just begging for a chance to slip out. I'm trying to look for a LSD though, being a 98 came with open diff and asc.

Would a mid-case diff fit without changing the driveshafts? Seems to be a 50/50 split on the forums whether it's just bolt in or have to change it all, and small case LSD seem to be somewhat rare
>>
>>17280321
>How the fuck do you get over 30mpg with this bitch?
He's probably bullshitting. There's very little chance you could get that kind of MPG out of one of these old compacts without running shitty economy tires and driving like grandma.
>>
>>17271902
One may have fallen off but the other looked like it was ripped right off. There was a mark in the paint where they used something to pry it off with.

Sadly I don't know where it happened because I did a ton of driving that day. I live in SoCal.
>>
>>17280321
5 speed or auto? The autos get terrible mileage, the 5 speeds get decent mileage if you keep it under 3k. Which is what I do for 99% of my driving. Unless on the freeway or when im in 5th and have to go over 3k. Diff ratios also help with economy. Mine came wih a 3.23 I believe. Its not as fast off the line as my friends 318ti with 3.45 lsd factory diff (yes definitely rare to find)

The med. Case diffs work but some require hammering the subframe. In a specific spot.

>>17280335

318s? Well there are tons of them. E30s, E36s and in many body styles. I didnt know a whole class of cars were dedicated to one group of people.

Assuming you are talking about the TI (Compact/Hatchback) they are the best of all the worlds as far as driveability. The Z3s are regarded as amazing cars, and share the same Chassis and suspension components etc. Only difference is body shape and weight slightly... I love people who hate on the compacts yet love the Z3, very hypocritical.

The second option seems like it could be cooler but there will be a lot of trial and error on test panels where the Platinum I already know will look good. Any opinions? (here is Platinum Pearl). And its not a mustang/charger/corvette like every motherfucker around here has. The only thing I worried about is that the tiers are wearing unevenly. It still has the stock tires from 1999. The inside of the front wheels are worn WAY WAY more than the outside. Grandpa was saying it probably just needs alignment and new tires. But I did some googling and herd that some of thees cars had canard issues out of the factory. I also herd it could be signs of s suspension issue. Although I dont think its that cause it seems to handle fine. Took the back roads home with the top down when coming home from the lot, it was so fucking fun. Are there any weird BMW quirks I should know about? Is there anything special I need to do to it outside of normal things like oil changes? I want to keep this fucker going as long as I possibly can. My family has some knowledgeable car people, but all they know are chevys and fords.

Change the tires yesterday, if the tires start to wear unevenly than get an alignment too. Once it starts to wear unevenly it will never stop and get worse. But realistically front to back doesnt matter one will wear faster than the other. Thats why when you swap tires you move PS (Passengwr side) rear to DS front. And DS rear to PS front. If there is no difference in wear from right to left than you are fine.

Either happened in Irvine (doubt it) but that's where I lost another one or in oceanside.

How different are the E46 M3 and the E36 M3?

Need advice.

I bought a E39 540i with over 200K miles.
>Owned it for about a month
>Took it to Les Schwab for tires
>A few days later, throw it into Peverse
>BRAPBRAPBRAPBRAP
>Panic and put it back in Park
>Throw it into Reverse and wait before I release the brake
>squeak
I feel like my Reverse is going to give out. However, giving proper time to change has eliminated the BRAP that happened when I did it the same way I'd been doing during my entire month of ownership. Did I truly finally break the transmission at 200,000 miles, or did the people at Les Schwab push it too hard? Should I just continue to be careful, or do I need to get it serviced? Would getting it serviced even help?

Also, how good is Wal Mart for tires? Les Schwab only had Federals and Toyos, but Wal-Mart could offer and install Michelins/Goodyears/Pirellis/etc. I have a feeling they might be better in the long run. Thoughts?

I'm looking to get a used 3 series, likely a 2014 320i/328i, around $20k budget.

Is there something else I should look at that's similar? Any pitfalls I should look out for beyond normal car stuff?

Is there a particular feature I should look to grab that'll will help the resale value in the future?

Currently driving a 1999 4Runner that's served me well for a decade, but now that I'm back in Texas rather than Colorado, I don't need an SUV.

I should add that LS was not nice to my last car, and I wasn't present for all of my 4-hour wait. The most damning thing is that my trip odometer was reset when I went back to get it. I don't know how much the guy drove it to 'test the tires,' or how hard.

How does this look for my first BMW?

I had 2 Mercedes in a row and figured I'd try one of these out.

Had it like 4 years now, and i like it so much that next is definitely going to be F10 550i

It's an automatic. Mercedes has lousy manual transmissions, BMW has lousy automatic transmissions

It's a manual dingus.

Oh, scrolled down to the "stats" and it read automatic, sorry.
Well aside for leaky tops and those windows tending to go out of place, there's not much to go wrong with these cars, as long as the waterpump is in check
>>
>>17284309
I think only the original pumps went bad right? By this point it should have the replaced water pump that has the metal impeller instead of the shitty plastic impeller one.

kek, my shitbucket is down again, my oik filter housing gasket failed so there's a steady drip of oil running down the front of the block, and my water pump finally gave up at 121k, pretty impressive for a car known to have a shitty water pump.

Gonna replace the two tomorrow, wish me luck

Rip 3-5 hours of labor

Thanks for the tips br/o/s. Going to call him tomorrow and see if I can negotiate that price under $2k. I hate replacing soft tops.
>>
>>17284436
>that fucking vert retracting hard top shit

swear it makes the car look worse most of the time. maybe the z4 is the only exception
>>
>>17284486
Because the car is so big, you'd expect a soft top.

Only on us specs. The euro E36 is arguably better than the e46

should I trade my diesel E60 for a Alpina B10 4.6?

>trade FUGLY E60 5 series with 282hp tops for much better looking and somewhat lighter Alpina with 335hp
no brainer imo
