fashion statement.

ducati literally brings nothing to the table. people like to cite their panimeme 1299 saying ooo its so fast when in reality it's sitting on an extra 0.3L of displacement and only making 205 at the crank. And considering they are a meme Italian company, they are a bit more lax with the ECU restrictions so they seem faster initially.

other than that, the only real engineering feat is how light they are. equipping them with a bunch of premium components like ohlins shocks/brembo brakes/quickshifter/abs/tc etc... is just meme stuff that can be had by buying any other modern sport bike

I'm actually not a motorcyclist, yet. I ride but I do not have a license as of yet. I've been driving since I was barely eighteen, have my license, a car and whatnot, but I dunno how or where I'm supposed to obtain a biker license. I've talked to a few places but most of them said that it takes up to nine months which is an awful amount of time. I (illegally) got my driver's license without even passing the exams. You don't happen to know a place where I could do the same for a biker's license, do you?

You still have to use the feeler gauge with shim under bucket.

>20 minute valve adjustment with screw type
>vs an hour plus to remove the cam, wait for new shims in the mail or order over the counter, then reinstall the cam, cam tensioner, valve cover.
Really guy? I guess if you're like Baird and take your bike to the shop to do maintenance and don't mine paying a couple hundred for a valve adjustment.
>>
>>17144073
Had both systems. Done valve adjustments on both. Still prefer DOHC.
for dohc
>Remove valve cover
>have fucktons of room to work. no cramming my hands in tight spots or holding things at weird angles
>feeler slides directly under cam with no room for error
>if it does go out of adjustment (which happens much less because there's no screws to wiggle about) then I just pull the cam and drop in a new shim easier than I could even get to the exhaust valves on my other bike

For the SOHC bike:
>remove valve covers
>now have tiny window to get to the tiny little tappets
>tappets are on pivots so a feeler gauge won't slide under unless you go from just the right angle
>intakes aren't too bad anyway
>to get to the exhaust valves I have to unbolt the radiators and hold them out of the way to get my hand in, and I still have to cram it in at a weird angle between the front of the frame and engine
>almost impossible to get a wrench and screwdriver in that gap to make an adjustment if necessary

Maybe the XR is easier than my KTM but it couldn't be any easier than the DR-Z. I don't know why you think it's hard to pull a cam.

Can anyone here give me the rundown on cruisers? What are the pros and cons of various brands, what features or whatever should I take into consideration, what are the reliability / maintenance considerations, etc.

Not the huge touring kind, just standard Sportster / Shadow / Etc. type cruisers.

It's basically impossible to find unbiased information on Harley Davidsons because they're the biggest cult in motorcycling. It's all either "pigfat, slow, unreliable trash 0/10 would not buy" or "best bike in the entire world, never breaks, most powerful motorcycle in the world, wouldn't buy anything else".

I've been riding dual sports for almost 10 years now, but I want to get a comfy, relaxed road bike that can just cruise 25-90mph for hours on end. Also grocery / beer runs, of course.

Pic related, just a bike from local Craigslist I was looking at, but the front fairing / windshield thing would have to go.

From your description, it sounds like an FZ-09 would be perfect for you.

If you're set on a cruiser though I'd say either go with Indian (owned by Polaris and American made but I personally don't like their styling), Yamaha (the Bolt is great and average size with lots of aftermarket support), and stay away from Harley Davidson (paying for the name and ancient shitty technology, though their styling is GREAT).

Does that help at all anon?

Not hard, but more difficult, and more time consuming than the screw type. The XR has plenty of room if you bend the feeler a little to get between the frame and engine.

>comfortable ergos (upright seated not crouched) unless you go full faggot with one of those mashed position bobbers or tryhard harley's
>often have creature comforts like floorboards instead of pegs, cushy seats, bar-mounted speakers, etc
>lots of torque available early in RPMs
>generally cheaper to maintain than high-performance bikes because you can get away with cheaper/less materials (a lot have single disc front brakes instead of double cuz they don't need to stop in a hurry from 180mph, much lower performance demands from tires saves a shitload of money there, etc)

Cruisers are, in essence, exactly what it says on the tin; they're motorcycles for daily driving and getting places in relative comfort, cruising. Emphasis is usually on sound, style, and lazy ease of use over maximum performance and handling.

As with most bikes, buy metric when looking at cruisers unless you have priapism for the Harley badge; you'll typically get much more bike for much less money, though sometimes private sellers can be a crapshoot.
>>
>>17144267
>How strict are emissions there? Are inspections difficult?

The TÜV inspection is pretty thorough and all important parts have need to have to be original, certified for general use (ABE) or to be used with your bike. It might not be worth the hassle and expenses to make your bike TÜV ready.

Yes, it's a radar gun, it just detects your speed but since you're on a bike it's hard to get you because they need to hit you directly to get a good read. Also 65 in a 50 isn't that bad. That's around "the limit" to how much you can go above the limit in kilometers.

I'm planning on renting an Africa Twin to try the adv bike thing, but if I did buy one it would probably replace my current dual sport. I couldn't justify having two bikes so similar to each other.

>>17144196

FZ-09 is a nice bike, but I want to get a bike for the track and the FZ-09 is a little too similar to "gottagofast" options I've been eyeing, so I'm relatively set on a cruiser as bike #2. I'm trying for 3 bikes as different as possible from each other.

I did take a look at the Yamaha Bolt and they look like a good choice. I've never owned a Yamaha, but I've had great luck with Kawasaki and Honda over the years and I'm sure they're pretty much the same. I wouldn't be buying a new bike regardless, so I can avoid some of the "paying for the name" thing with HD. The used market in my area is absolutely flooded with Harleys, but there aren't many Indians or other cruiser brands around. Could you elaborate a little on "ancient shitty technology"? Are they difficult to work on or really high maintenance requirements? My current bike is "ancient tech" but I love it just the same.

So yeah, that helps. Thanks anon.

>>17144238

You're right, I've already decided I want a cruiser, but I'm not here for dick patting. Just information so I don't buy a particularly shitty cruiser. Even if all cruisers are shitty.

>>17144335

I have absolutely no loyalty to the Harley badge, and I would tend to prefer metric as the majority of my tools are metric from years of working on my jap bikes. As I mentioned though, the used market in my area is completely flooded with Harleys from $1500-4000 from the 883's to 1200's. The occasional jap cruiser pops up, but surprisingly few. The Bolt looks like a good option, maybe the occasional Shadow, but they're in short supply.

'86 Shadow is my current ride, I'm loving it so far, though I got what I think is a really good deal on an excellently-kept example. The older ones don't seem as easy to come buy, however, and the newer shadows seem to go for more of the elongated Harley-esque look that I don't really find quite as appealing. If you do come across a mid-late 80's Shadow though, they're pretty low maintenance. Shaft drive and all that jazz keeps it pretty simple.

As another anon said, I've heard Indian is a solid choice as well, though also like that anon said I don't really like much of their styling save for the Scout, which is pretty dang sexy to me.

I don't really think you can go wrong with any Japanese standard or cruiser, and I seriously doubt Harleys are as bad as the opposition claims they are. I'm sure they have their quirks just like any model of bike has, you just need to learn them and maintain it well. That being said, the only Harley I really like the looks of are the sportsters; I've never been one for the balls-to-the-wall cruiser look, I like it more on the simple side.

I'm 100% with you there on the styling thing. There are some decent looking sportsters, and Harley seems to be making more of the leaner, trimmed down bikes in the last several years. Yeah, I'll never buy a brand new bike.

The Phoenix used motorcycle market is fucking flooded with bikes <10,000 miles selling for ~50% of MSRP or less. Especially in the summer when only the most truly insane are riding.

Why spend $8-12k on a brand new bike when I can buy a good condition used one for $4k?

Hell, I bought my 2005 XR650L (~$7,000 new) for $4,200 in 2010 with 1,200 miles on it in like new condition. Those miles were a guy commuting to the local military base and back.

New bikes are a terrible choice unless you've got something extremely specific you want, or it's too new to find used.

I paid $1600 for my Shadow, which now that I actually look at values that's probably just a little over average, but the thing is in excellent shape. So not the best deal all things considered but I still consider it worth what I paid.

And that's why I like the Scout, though. All of the rest of their lineup has the over-the-top 70's chunky fairings and tassel-type stuff that I just can't stomach, but the Scout is nowhere near as bad and actually looks pretty slick.
>>

Scout Sixty is pretty good looking, but I haven't seen one on Craigslist at all. 6500 is pretty reasonable if I could find a deal like that, but I'm looking to stay around $4500 or less. This bike will probably be the least ridden of the three I plan to own, and who knows if I'll even keep it longer than a year or two. All depends how much I like it. It's easy to buy and sell bikes. If you want a sportster get one made after 2003, after 2007 all sporties are fuel injected.

The bike is basically unchanged since 1986, and they are good bikes, bulletproof motors, they make good power and with buell heads and a big bore kit a sporty can put down over 100hp to the tire.

Sporties have god teir aftermarket.

Scouts both the 60 and 69 shit on sporties right out of the box, the aftermarket blows.

Metric cruisers like triumph yamaha or honda I dont have alot of info on but by all accounts they are good bikes.

Triumph I think suffers a little from Harleyism, lots of style and weight but low on power.

You can get a good one for around 4 grand

Thanks for the info guys. I'll pick up a Jap cruiser if I can find a good deal on a decent looking one, otherwise there is a steady stream of cheap Sportsters for sale on my local Craigslist. If I go that route I'll make sure I buy post-2003.

What's the life expectancy and maintenance schedule of a Sportster (or ~900-1200cc cruisers), out of curiosity?

I'm at 20k on my XR650L and it's just starting to need things like new swing arm bearings, etc. Cam chain and clutch are probably coming up next around ~25k or so. Most people seem to need head work around 35,000-40,000. I have no idea how this compares to other types of motorcycles, it's the only bike I've owned long enough so far for it to matter.

I never rode the one much that I bought, because I had my scout so I sold it.

Because of that I dont really know how often the valves need checked but i think the cams dont need shimmed like on OHC motors because pushrods.

They last a really long time tho, they dont tend to get crashed as much as the big harleys or sportbikes so some can rack up the miles.

Other than standard chain and clutch stuff you really only need to make sure your primary chain is tight enough.

I had little mechanic experience and the repairs I needed to make required a transmission pull, the whole this was really easy.

Harley scams are pretty common I guess.

It could be a really good deal.

Reguardless I wouldnt buy a Twincam Harley unless I was gonna flip it.

Theyve got some serious design flaws, 1999 and earlier is the newest id buy for a big harley.

Is there a sporty (probably not going to find a full on sport bike that fits this descriptions) bike that is mechanically simple to work on? Doesn't have to necessarily be a bare-bones engine design, anything that is complex yet still manages to make simple maintenance/tuning works too.

I've heard the R NineT fits this, is there anything else? I'm imagining some Guzzi stuff probably falls under the umbrella
>>

Opinion on this? The salvage title doesn't really bother me, but I'm pretty wary of that radiator damage.

>>
>>17145547
I can't speak to the mechanics of them, but the R Nine T is a great motorcycle. Fun, simple, easy to ride with a decent amount of power. A Guzzi is going to be beautiful to look at but riding one is a massive disappointment. They're gutless.
>>

>>
>>17145562
>https://phoenix.craigslist.org/cph/mcy/6089711827.html
That seems way too low for a VMax that is in pretty good condition, apart from that radiator.

As long as the hoses leading from the radiator aren't damaged or leaking, and the fan still works, it might just be a simple replacement.
If not, there might be more teardown involved, and checks to make sure that there's no damage from overheating.
>>
>>17145565
Depends.

Old Ducati 916's had 1/4 turn Dzus fasteners. Could strip the whole bike bare in less than 20 seconds. The valves were interesting to adjust, but overall... fairly simple to work on.

I'll confirm the motor is seized before purchase, but I'm sure there will be a lot that needs to be done. First thoughts are a good pressure washing, followed by basic maintenance (oil change, flush the gas tank, clean the carbs). Anything else I should be ready for when I pick it up?

They're only hard to insure if you declare it as salvage to your insurance company. I actually work in insurance, and there's no way for us to know unless you tell us.

I guess if you totaled it and tried to file a claim, it might cause an issue. Otherwise it would never come up.
>>

lel. air density still changes with altitude. EFI can correct the a/f ratio for the most part but that doesn't mean it won't lose power.

>What's the life expectancy and maintenance schedule of a Sportster (or ~900-1200cc cruisers), out of curiosity?

Like most motorcycles fewer actually wear out than are beaten or neglected to death, but maintenance is easy and thanks to the enormous aftermarket you can keep them running for a literal lifetime easily.

Maintenance schedules for anything can be found via brand/model specific forums. Whatever you buy, make sure there are a shitload of them and your particular model has been out for a while. Makes support and accessories easy to find, but no other bike brand has anything remotely close to HD aftermarket support.

This forum will relieve anyone of ever asking a Sportster question on /dbt/ if they know about it:

Some don't matter and some cannot be re-registered. Do not rely on /dbt/. Do read chapter and verse on your DMV website or visit your local DMV then see it in writing.
>>
>>17145702
You still have less air to fuel combustion. EFI bikes just continue to run at stoichiometric air to fuel ratio for that smaller amount of air, thus you burn less fuel, thus you make less power.

The problem is just compounded with carbs where you have less air but continue dumping the same amount of fuel in, then you both have lower power potential to begin with, and then don't have the right ratio for efficient combustion which makes even less power.
>>
>>17145622
1999 was a mixed year and later is Twin Cam territory. Some had issues. Some of those issues were resolved. The timing chain tensioner issue on some TCs wasn't pretty.

Ignore /dbt/ for Harley info and go to vtwinforum, Harley Tech Talk, Chop Cult, and if a Sportster go to the xlforum first since it covers everything exhaustively.

Bring a motorcycle compression tester (they are cheap and you want one for the rest of your wrenching life) and check both cylinders.

I expect it will read low from sitting but both should be similar. Inspect spark plugs when do compression test.

Expect to clean the carbs as in disassemble and soak. Check the petcock. If your year has a diaphragm petcock ensure rubber is still good or replace with another fuel valve.

Download a factory service manual which shouldn't be hard to find, and go to Honda forums (this is not a Honda forum) for detailed info.

They were decent machines. Tires will be harder than woodpecker lips but spend nothing on them until engine is confirmed happy and healthy.

Old white electrical connector blocks may crack or crumble but most are for assembly line convenience and many can be hard-wired.

is quite correct.

You should see my post as advised. I've rebuilt TCs whose owners were extremely unhappy when those shoes shit the bed after warranty had passed. Search any HD forum for more info.

That said it's easy to replace them with Cyco shoes which last longer (cheap solution, periodic inspection advisable) or various improve tensioners, or if your crankshaft passes a runout check (that pressed crank is a a bean counter design) you can use a gear drive cam setup and end the problem by returning to the classic problem free design HD used since the 1930s.

Shoe in pic is not as bad as they get. They can completely disintegrate and since their next stop is the oil pump can wreak serious fuckery. If the chain munches the show spring the steel particles can slay even more shit.

I'd like to see RSD become standard on big twins. Baker's made them for years. Unfortunately HD kept that bit of backwards compatibility far too long. Kick starters existed because electrical systems long ago were poor by modern standards and a kickstarter is MUCH lighter than an electric starter system. Kickers don't require a battery and can fire simple magneto and points systems.

Now electrics are reliable and kicking large engines can be a bitch. The fewer the cylinders for a given displacement, the more hassle. I like them for backup and maintenance convenience (since they rotate the engine without electrical power) but modern riders don't need them. They went away gradually as Japanese starters became available. The only good Harley starter is the classic Denso also used on millions of autos and trucks.

This is 4chan. People here just post things to get other people riled up and weed/potheads are an easy target.

I wouldn't be surprised if the general public had more favorable views on marijuana than 4chan boards if they were "surveyed".

Personally, I think marijuana being a scedule I drug is silly, but people smoking in their backyards when kids are around ruin it for everyone and those people will be the ones remembered by the regular non-indulging folk as "those potheads".
